Hi everybody, as per subject, I'm getting this error in the hyperkitty log when mailman daemon tries to archive a mail. I've setup the hyperkitty.cfg file with api_key = MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY in settings_local.py but still nothing. I've seen here and in GitLab issues some errors concerning a wrong api key but here it says that it wasn't sent at all. All packages installed via pip install + latest .zip release, including mailman-hyperkitty. Currently running on apache with mod_wsgi_py3 without https. Any clue? All the best, Marco Marinello

Find a smtp server to send out emails

Hi, This problem is not caused by mailman, but I still want to give it a shot here. I'm hosting a mailing list on top of mailman3. Emails are supposed to be sent out by AWS ses. However, ses requires that sender address must be verified, which leads to a problem that emails sent by subscribers to mailing list cannot be sent to other subcirbers, since their addresses are not verified. And it is impossible to verified every subscriber. Are there smtp service providers allowing unverified email address to send out emails, or do I have other solutions? Thanks. -- Best wishes, Leon

Moderation of held emails vs. spam

Hi, I now run Mailman 3.3.1, installed from pip. Is there now any way to prevent Mailman from forwarding the contents of the held message when notifying moderators of held messages? In my case these messages often are spam messages and if the entire contents are forwarded it triggers spam handling in the recipient address(es) which over time risks classifying all moderation emails as spam or even classifying the list domain or server as a spam source. Even my own outgoing filter classifies it as spam, which I will fix. I currently run rspamd for spam filtering, graylisting and DKIM and ARC verification/signing. Someone on this recommended it, thank you for that as it removes the need for other milters. I guess that this would be a simple change to make as a kludge but a proper implementation as a setting would be a lot better. I'd like it as a global setting but that might be too coarse. I have finished my how-to install Mailman 3 on Debian 10 completed to the point where you can use it to get a fully functional Mailman 3 environment up and running. This is a comprehensive guide that walks you through installing EVERYTHING (currently!) that Mailman 3 needs to run. It also makes updating Mailman 3/Postorius/Hyperkitty very easy. I have not added the update directions yet but will very soon. I also plan on adding a section on setting up DKIM and Xapian with Mailman 3. I hope this helps those who wish to get a Mailman 3 server up and running quickly and brings a sense of sanity to the confusion regarding the various documentation out there concerning the installation of Mailman 3/Postorius/Hyperkitty. How to Increase outgoing mail volume for Mailman 3

Hello everyone, We had a new client come on board that brought a list that had the largest out-going mail volume that I have ever dealt with. So I did what any sane server administrator would do that is running Mailman 3: I ran to Mark Sapiro for help! Here is what the Sage of all things Mailman counseled me to do: 1. Disabled VERP delivery. VERP can help improve mail delivery by delivering 1 message per SMTP transaction (I think I got that right). Using VERP is counter-productive as it can seriously delay outgoing mail delivery for a high-volume list. So you can use something like the following in the MTA section of your mailman.cfg: [mta] verp_confirmations: no verp_personalized_deliveries: no verp_delivery_interval: 0 2. I configured Mailman 3 to run 4 outgoing runners. The default is 1. This action was the game changer. It allows Mailman to handle 4 incoming messages at a time instead of 1. My client's incoming list volume was high enough where it was overwhelming the single outgoing runner. Here is what I added to the mailman.cfg file: [runner.out] instances: 4 Doing this step immediately solved the backlog in var/queue/out. 3. If you start up with a new server for a list that is high volume then keep an eye out for Proofpoint and Vade Security as they will block your new IP address quicker than Mark Sapiro can say "This is a bug. Questions regarding message acceptance

Hello, I have few questions regarding usage of Mailman3: 1) We have list1 and list2 with members. Can we specify that all members of list1 can post messages to list2? We could potentially write a script that would synchronize members of another list to “Accept these non-members” of another list, but with thousands of lists it will be difficult to maintain lists in synchro. So perhaps there is a concept of adding another list to “Accept these non-members” and mailman real-time evaluate membership of another list upon message arrival? 2) In explanation of “Accept these non-members” it’s written: “While non-regexp addresses can be entered here, it is preferred to add the address as a nonmember and set the nonmember's Moderation to Default Processing”. I noticed that if someone posts to a list then he is added automatically to non-members. Which means that next time he will be able to post. My understanding is that it’s better to use the feature “Accept these non-members”. Am I correct? Thank you, Paweł

MM3 generates long lines?

I'm seeing emails being dropped when mm3 talks to the local smtp server, with log errors like: 2021-06-23 15:42:24 1lvvea-007r8u-VN H=localhost (<FQDN>) [::1] F=<announce-bounces@<FQDN>> rejected after DATA: maximum allowed line length is 998 octets, got 1036 The email itself did not have such long lines AFAICT. I can disable line length checking on the mailserver, but that sounds like a recipe for the next one along to drop the email. Peter C

Splitting hosts: mta&core vs postorius

I'm trying to set up mailman3 on two hosts, one of which runs core + exim, the other runs postorius (&possibly hyperkitty). I have I think got core set up correctly, and postorius is sort of usable, but anything in the web ui that talks to core ends up with a white screen. I think what is happening is a postorius URL ends up with the core (or perhaps no) hostname, and as there's nothing there to answer it fails. I've checked the settings and I don't think I have misconfigured postorius. Is it possible that the bad url is being passed from core to postorius in some way and reused without changing the host? In the config at present, both hosts are visible to the browser, and each host can communicate with the other. Any ideas on how to pin down the problem better? Ruth

Loops back to myself

Hi, I have a problem with my Mailman 3-setup. The symptom is that postfix rejects non-existing addresses for my list domains with <adr(a)example.com>: mail for example.com loops back to myself What I guess happens happens is that postfix for some reason accepts the mail as it is for a relay domain and finds that it is not deliverable locally as the address does not exist locally and then tries to relay it on to the appropriate MX server, which is itself and then fails and generates a bounce message. This is a bit annoying as I have set up postfix to only accept valid addresses. I have set the transport_maps, local_recipient_maps and relay_domains to the files generated by MM3. I run an older version of MM3 (3.0) but prefer to fix this without upgrading as upgrading is a relatively big undertaking. This is mostly a backscatter problem for spam I guess. Any ideas of very simple and easy to forget things that I've probably missed? Cheers // David

Mailman3 stopped sending out mail

Hello. Recently my mailman3 instance stopped distributing mail. But mailman's own mail (notification, digest etc) and archiving are working OK. Internal Server Error: /mailman/accounts/fedora/login/

Hi mailing list, I own a mailman box. I regularily (many times a day) get mail with an internal server error. I am using Debian and the included mailman3-full package. I guess someone tries to hack my instance. But I don't understand why this leads to the internal server error. I am also wondering why the request URL is /mailman/accounts/fedora/login, as I am using Debian (understandable if the request happens via an outside trigger). I have no clue about the internal workings of mailman though. I use Debian 11 bullseye and thus version 3.3.3. I can trigger the internal server error by myself by visiting the request URL. Mailman 3 - Header Filter

I am a Mailman neophyte and need help with filtering posts based on the subject field. We have a few list owners that want 'Out of Office' replies discarded. When using the below syntax in Postorius/Header filter the post is not discarded but ends up in 'Held Messages'. Is there any syntax I am missing or a setting in the lists that needs to be disabled/enabled to get these posts dropped? Any help is much appreciated. Importing mbox files into archive defect with lines with From

A curious problem, but seems to be well defined. I am importing mbox format files with 25 years worth of archives in 250 files from a Listserv list into hyperkitty. All is going swimmingly, except I get lots of partial emails with sender of None put into the current month, with text that has clearly been truncated. As I look at each one, I see that the line in the imported text is immediately after a line starting with 'From'. Clearly, 'From:' is an RCS-82 header, but 'From ' is not, and yet there is much evidence here that this is messing up the import. Is this a known bug? If not, how do I report it?

Strange issue with bounce processing

Dear List, First of all Merry Christmas to those of you that are observing it. I have an issue on one of my Mailman 3 servers. The bounce runner is not running, even after restarting mailman core. All the other runners are working fine. Here is the problem, after restarting it, a number of messages show up in queue/bounces from a single list. However the bounce runner is still not running. So I remove these messages from queue/bounces folder and restart mailman core. The same messages show up from the same single list again in queue/bounces. In the var/logs/bounce.log file, addresses from this list are being logged as being removed after starting mailman core. They correlate with the messages showing up in queue/bounces. I assume these "cached" bounces are what is interfering with the running of the bounce runner. I don't see anything in the mailman or mailmansuite log that would explain this behavior. Postorius no connection to REST API

Hello, I've seen some similar problems, but have not yet found anything that would work for me. I just installed Mailman3-full from debian stable repository (Mailman 3.2.1 to be precise). Mailman itself is working, also are all mailing lists imported from Mailman 2.1. But I just can not get the web interface of Postorius to work. I did manage to get it running through apache2 after I figured out what I had to remove from the old site config and replace it with the stuff in the automatically created config. Upon loading the site, I was able to log in and verify the mail address, but it kept showing that it wasn't able to connect to the REST API. I double and triple checked, that mailman-web.py and mailman-hyperkitty.cfg contain the same API key (api_key in hyperkitty and SECRET_KEY and MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY in mailman web), but that didn't help. I also saw a recommendation, that it can cause problems, when the API key uses symbols like / so I switched it to _ in all three places, but that didn't help. The configuration for mailman, mailman-web and hyperkitty all are set to using https, switching them to http doesn't solve any of the problems. Meanwhile, the site only shows "Internal Server Error" even though I did not change anything. But probably not that relevant while it can't be used either way. Okay, so I got the webservice of Mailman3 up and running, but when I go to mailman3/postorius/lists/, I get the following error: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. When I logged in to the admin user, it threw a server 500 error, but I could refresh and see myself logged in. If I try to go to lists or mailman settings, however, I get the error above.

where do I find the text of a bounce email ?

All, I am trying to figure why a particular outbound message was bounced, so I'm looking for the text of the NDR that was sent - where do I find that ? Fyi, the outbound message was accepted by the first relay, and then presumably later bounced by the actual recipient server (Office365). Delete Django profiles not signed up to a list

Hi, I have noticed recently I have around 2000 bogus sign-ups that have created accounts in Django. Looking through the logs these have come from the Postorius sign-up pages. I checked and email confirmation is required before the accounts are created and the email addresses that have been used do seem like they could respond to these requests. I don't want to add captchas to the form right now but is there any way to clean out these users from the database perhaps periodically based on whether the accounts are subscribed to any list? Hi everyone, one of our servers that was running a mailman2 instance just crashed this afternoon, so we decided to take the leap and migrate to 3, and I have to say it worked pretty well, the lists seem to be back. What I can't seem to find is the option to whitelist senders based on a domain AND on membership on a different list. The lists are operated for a smallish university and all the professors need to be allowed to send to the students list, without being member of that list. That was possible with mailman2 by just whitelisting the university domain. Also, in the past we allowed all members of the all-students list to post to any of the dorm-lists (this is mainly used for party announcements so it is not a must have), but I wanted to ask anyways, if there was a chance to allow this feature again. According to the docs, the accept_these_nonmembers option exists (https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…) but none of my lists have that set after the migration - the field is not even there when accessing the REST API. Do I need to enable something? Has that feature been added just recently, and we are missing out (since we are using the apt packages from ubuntu)? Thanks in advance, Patrick

Hello together, I migrated a number of lists from mailman2 to mailman3 using the import functionality. Everthing works fine and the new lists are in use. Currently I´m using the maxking-docker-images with postorius: Mailman Core Version GNU Mailman 3.3.3 (Tom Sawyer) Mailman Core API Version 3.1 Mailman Core Python Version 3.8.5 (default, Feb 19 2021, 09:27:16) [GCC 9.3.0] After this migration I started a refactoring with the list-styles specially with message-footers. Already the old lists in mailman2 were confused in some configuration details an I was clear to import this "misconfiguration" and clean it up afterwards. But this was much more difficult than expected: some lists are using a footer (from the mailman2-config) and there is no record in the template-section visible. Further I found no configuration item which points to this "old" footer. I found the file [code] /usr/lib/python3.8/site-packages/mailman/templates/de/list:member:generic:footer.txt [/code] which includes the old footer: [code] _______________________________________________ $display_name Mailingliste -- $listname Zur Abmeldung von dieser Mailingliste senden Sie eine Nachricht an ${short_listname}-leave@${domain} [/code] but no configuration item to disable this behaviour. I created a new template list:member:regular:footer for the list to override the footer. But the old footer is still used - in detail: the resulting message sent to all subcribers of the list contains only the footer and the content sent to the list is an attachement of that "footer-message". This is the basic reason why I want to change it. The domain name provided is not valid according to RFC 1034/1035. This URL ist stored in the DB-table "template" for the name=list:member:regular:footer. A call to my fqdn or to localhost [code] wget http://localhost:8000/postorius/api/templates/list/homepage.gruppe.tgcamber… [/code] will return the footer itself - this works fine. Therefore, should i set POSTORIUS_TEMPLATE_BASE_URL to http://localhost:8000? I think, resolving this issue will use the newly configured footer. But I started with the intention to remove alle footers due to the attachement situation described above. Does anybody have an idea how to change the configuration of my list? Are these problems probably related to the import? Currently we are using more then 25 lists with a lot of users. Hi ! I need simple add/delete member to list using rest ..... but all documentation is for python and not helpfull for me, .... and I need these in CLI using curl command .... Hi, Currently, I use a nginx configuration for mailman. It's work perfectly. I tried to do the same with Apache, but the statics files are not delivered (404). Adding user - Error 409 Subscription request already pending

We have a couple of people trying to subscribe to our list but receive an error similar to: {"title": "409 Conflict", "description": "Subscription request already pending"} If I try to Mass Subscribe them in Postorius I get this error: HTTP Error 409: b'{"title": "409 Conflict", "description": "Subscription request already pending"}' In Postorius I don't see them hung up in Subscription requests. I hope this is helpful to the Ubuntu folks out there. Once some critical small things were figured out, turns out it's pretty easy to get Mailman 3 running successfully under Ubuntu 18.04. The linked google doc includes my own walkthru, which includes using a cloud server image for Ubuntu 18.04 and a LAMP setup with Apache 2 and PHP, as well as Python and PostgreSQL, and the mailman3-full package that comes with that Ubuntu distribution. Hi All, thanks for your contibution to opensource softwares. I have done the installation walkthrough on the wiki page (thanks to Brian Carpenter) and I am almost there. I can run the three services and they provide the relevant web interfaces (admin, postorius, hyperkitty). In comparison to the walkthrough, I did two changes; First, I used different port numbers , as it would otherwise conflict with other services on the server. Second, I disabled the social accounts authentification mechanisms. I am still running on sqllite, as I am still testing things (one task at a time). Using my "superuser" credentials, I can log to the admin section in a fraction of a second. The server response time is less than one second. Once logged in, I can navigate through all the site as an authenticated user, including in the postorius pages related to list management. The services work normally. However, if logout and attempt to login from the postorius website, I get a « 502 bad gateway » error after roughly 30 seconds. The logs in Systemctl for gunicorn register a "DIGEST-MD5 common mech free" error message and the nginx error logs just show a connection drop: 2021/08/12 18:11:09 [error] 26026#26026: *31 upstream prematurely closed connection while reading response header from upstream, client: [ip redacted], server: [domain redacted], request: "POST /accounts/login/ HTTP/2.0", upstream: "http://127.0.0.1:8006/accounts/login/", host: "[domain redacted]", referrer: "https://[domain redacted]/accounts/login/?next=/mailman3/lists/" Two additional clues may help understanding what is going on: 1- If I attempt to login with improper credentials, the services respond normally, and I get the expected red box with "invalid credentials" message on the postorius page. It is only when proper credentials are given that the connection fails. 2- If I attempt to register a new email adress, the services also fail to respond (although with no DIGEST-MD5 message registered). It thus seems to be a post "POST" problem, but what puzzles me is that it is not an issue for the admin page. Below the relevant sections of my settings.py page. Problem with redirection when entering alias without a / at the end

Hey there, I'm using Apache2 as the webserver, configured https://mailman.xyz.de as Web host. When I want to get to Mailman Starting Page now I need to Enter the following URL: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/ to be directly redirected as expected to https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/postorius/lists/ -> works. Problem: When leave out the slash at the end and I ONLY enter the following URL: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3 -> then I'm wrongly redirected to a page, taht does not exist: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman/postorius/lists/ -> 404 Where can I change this misbehaviour? In Apache-conf everything seems as it'S in the docs, for the vHost I do not have any other custom settings. Thank you in advance. By the way: Is there an easy way to redirect directly from https://mailman.xyz.de to https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/postorius/lists/ -> what would be a possibility for that?

Hi all, Is the documentation correct that ARC should be as simple to configure in mailman 3 as to add the private DKIM key and restarting mailman? (https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/handlers/docs/arc_sign…) I've tried that without finding any effect in my so far limited tests. I have not found anything in logs although I might have missed looking in one. Are there any known limitations? I have previously a working DKIM signature on outgoing mail as well as correctly set up SPF in DNS and SPF-checking on received mail. The verification on incoming mail adds a few headers but I do not think that that should be an issue, neither would the DKIM signing change anything should mailman add new headers. I now run Mailman 3.2.3 (La Villa Strangiato) on Python 3.7.4. Cheers // David

Hi, This seems to me like basic simple questions, I have tried FAQ and other resources, with not much success. I have two questions: 1. When I send an email to a list, in gmail and yahoo I see the following text with the links at the end of the email body: _______________________________________________ Testlist_dmark1 mailing list - listname(a)domain.tlb<mailto:testlist_dmark1@newlistserv.aaas.org> To unsubscribe send an email to listname-leave(a)domain.tlb In<mailto:listname-leave@domain.tlb%0b%0bIn> outlook this is added as an attachment in the form of a TEXT file, when you open it, you see the same text. Question: Is there a way to change this, that it looks in outlook the same way as it appears in gmail/yahoo? I know MS does it own stuff sometime and we have no impact on that, but I was thinking maybe we might change the footer in a way that outlooks sees that as part of email body. 2. How may I change the format and the text in footer? I was expecting it under list > setting, in postorius, but I could not find it. Hey there, in Mailman2 there was a simple link in the moderation-emails, with which I was able to open directly the "held-messages". I know how to manually integrate such a link with the variables of mailman (https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…) But: How can I change the template for all the lists (respectively maildomains/webdomains) so that I don't have to do this manually for all lists? I searched a bit for the corresponding template, but didn't find it. At the end it only says the following: "At your convenience, visit your dashboard to approve or deny the request." -> here I would like to add the following: "At your convenience, visit your dashboard to approve or deny the request: https://$domain/postorius/lists/$short_listname.$domain/held_messages" Or if someone sees another possibility to get us on the right track, it would be more than welcome, thank you! I recently got postorius web interface stopped with an error, from web log: WARNING 2021-09-29 14:46:47,071 39320 django.request Not Found: /mailman//postorius/lists/ from website: This page either doesn't exist, or it moved somewhere else. Time Zone Problem In Postorius

I have the server TZ set to EST. I have the TZ for Postfix set to EST. I have the following set in my settings_local.py file: TIME_ZONE = 'America/New_York' USE_TZ = True However messages showing up in the pending moderation queue box shows UTC date. I am seeing this behavior in Affinity as well so I figured it is either a Mailman core setting or perhaps database? Can anyone shed light on that? Brian

Hi, on a fresh debian 10 (mail server) I added mailman3 with: apt-get install mailman3-full dpkg-reconfigure mailman3 dpkg-reconfigure mailman3-web The server name is webserver-A Then I log in in webserver-A/mailman3 as a superuser I created a domain for webserver-A and domain-A The I created a list-A Then I created a second domain for webserver-B and domain-B Then I added to apache config a virtual host for webserver-B I log in webserver-B as the some superuser of webserver-A and I created a list-B But when I list the lists I can see both under webserver-A and webserver-B. The some problem with archiving hyperkitty. I search internet for a while and I discovered that using FILTER_VHOST = True seems to solve the problem. >From posotrius config page: FILTER_VHOST Filter the list of available lists in Postorius and Hyperkitty depending on the domain they are being currently served from. Mailman 3 supports multiple domains in a single installation. But it doesn't work. I got err 500 form apache. Were can I find an explanation or a how to configure the system to have 2 webserver with different domains working on the some server as it was with mailman 2? P.S.: I upgrade postorius to V. 1.3.2 and djando V 2.2.12 using the packages in testing distribution. Hi, Recently a member of one of our private lists sent a message with a picture attached. Because of the large message size (23MB) it was put into the moderation queue. But since then postorius fails to open the list's page with this error: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. We are testing the latest Mailman core 3.3.5 and Postorius 1.3.6. My colleagues reported that some email addresses cannot subscribe to the lists when two of them are using mass subscribe feature to add email addresses to the list. Then I try whether I can repeat the same issue. I did this: 1) Create two lists with default setting 2) Prepare a list of 1000 fresh email addresses not added to the system before 3) Mass subscribe both lists of these 1000 email addresses around the same time with all three Pre (confirm, approved, verified) checked There are quite a lot of similar errors in mailman.log. Moderation Action Changed After Import

I migrated a Mailman 2 list using import21 and the list's config.pck into a Mailman 3 list. The list owner reported back that about 98% of the list members had their moderation setting changed to Reject (with notification). He said the previous moderation was the list's default which was hold for moderation. Is such a thing possible with an import job? Dear friends, I got another problem: mailman floods my syslog. I deleted a domain/webdomain (further mentioned as deleted.org) in postorius, django web. No entries are now in /var/lib/mailman3/data/postfix_domains or postfix_lmtp or /var/lib/mailman3/lists. Hello, the question is: postgres - mailman3web-postorius_emailtemplate table vs mailman3 - templates table I installed a brand new mailman3 with mailman Core 3.3.3, Api 3.1, Core Python 3.9.2 postgres12 nginx on debian bullseye. I created a template via postorius -> lists -> (testliste01) -> templates -> new template -> [list:member:regular:footer] and [list:member:digest:footer] They are shown in the postgres database mailman3 table templates: id name context uri username password 14 list:member:digest:footer testliste01.mydomain.de http://localhost/postorius/api/templates/list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:m ember:digest:footer 15 list:member:regular:footer testliste01.mydomain.de http://localhost/postorius/api/templates/list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:m ember:regular:footer First there where no templates in the /var/lib/mailman3/templates folder, which was empty after installation. Later I created in /var/lib/mailman3/templates theses folders and the files /list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:member:digest:footer + list:member:regular:footer owned by list:list 644 A testmail went through but instead of the default footer no footer was shown. But in the database table templates no LC subdirectory is mentioned (in my case must be de). And I read (dont know where) .... The templates created in Postorius are created in the postorius_emailtemplate table in Mailman's database and referenced via URLs like 'https://example.com/mailman3/api/templates/list/<list-id>/<template-name>'. I.e., they are not stored in the file system. ... That's true. Unable to get mailman3 working on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Hi all, after upgrading an older server to Ubuntu 20.04, I tried to first upgrade my old mailman 2 installation to mailman 3. I've been on it for three weeks now, but unable to get anything working. I have long forgone the idea of upgrading and thus purged everything from mailman2 on my machine, and installed and removed mailman3 several times to no avail. My most recent try (it is currently an empty mailman installation) was done by calling apt install mailman3 mailman3-full mailman3-web and saying "yes" to every question. I'm using Mariadb as the database, and two databases called mailman3 and mailman3web (plus two users with the same names) have been created. I have configured a virtual host for apache (see below) and changed the mailman.cfg and mailman-weg.cfg to match (also see below). I have restarted both mailman3 and mailman3-web several times now, but when I try to access the site, I just get | Something went wrong | Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. plus an e-mail with subject | [Django] ERROR (EXTERNAL IP): Service Unavailable: /mailman3/postorius/lists/ I'm running | GNU Mailman 3.3.3b1 (Tom Sawyer) | Python 3.8.10 (default, Sep 28 2021, 16:10:42) Can anybody tell me what is going on? Internal server errors after upgrade

Hello community, I'm running the Docker version of MM3. I've just run: docker-compose stop docker-compose pull docker-compose up -d I am now at versions: mailman-core: 3.3.4 mailman-web: 2.2.20 I am running a 2-core, 4GB RAM VM on Linode. The web interface mostly works. However, sometimes/regularly I get a 500 Internal Server Error. In /opt/mailman/core/var/logs/mailman.log I see the errors, but they are usually different. The common thread seems they are always about some sort of database call. Reloading the page is usually successful. Did anything change with the latest upgrade in terms of database timeouts? Before this upgrade, I was never getting it. (htop does not show anything unusual.) Any leads? Thank you, Seth

Another docker upgrade question... according to the upgrade docs https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/upgrade-3.2.html#post-upgrade you are supposed to stop the web service and run a series of commands (compress/collectstatic/etc). How do you stop the service under Docker? If I stop the container, then I cannot access the manage.py command. Thanks, Seth

This is probably s stupid question but I have been searching for an answer. How do you set a different rest api password? The instructions say : The credentials are set in the [webservice] section of the configuration using the admin_user and admin_pass properties. But what is that referring to? I am running docker, so is this in the docker.yaml file (I tried it there it did not work) or in the Django config file or someplace else?

I'm unclear on how to approve via email a message sent to a list. As list owner you receive a 'requires approval' email. It then says: "If you reply to this message, keeping the Subject: header intact, Mailman will discard the held message. Do this if the message is spam. If you reply to this message and include an Approved: header with the list password in it, the message will be approved for posting to the list. The Approved: header can also appear in the first line of the body of the reply." Question: if I want to approve the message, where do I "...include an Approved: header with the list password in it" ? TY!

Mailman import of 2000 lists

I'm working on importing nearly 2000 lists and have been doing some testing prior to migrating from Mailman2. I'm using the mailman create command via for loop. It takes quite a while to do all the work including updating MySQL and re-generating the LMTP files for each list. As the number of lists increases the process gets slower. For my 2.0 environment, I have scripts to dump list info, but i can't find the equivalent in mailman 3, for some commands, for example I use: /usr/lib/mailman/bin/list_lists which equates in mailman3 to "mailman lists" /usr/lib/mailman/bin/list_members which equates in mailman3 to "mailman members [listname]" But I also use /usr/lib/mailman/bin/list_admins [listname] /usr/lib/mailman/bin/config_list [listname] Are there equivalent command line commands to get this info in mailman3? The mailman3 "mailman withlist [listname]" takes me into an interactive prompt not sure where to go from there. I can use the API curl --user [ADMIN]:[password] http://[IP]]/3.1/lists/[listname]/config | python3 -m json.tool But just curious if there is a command line equivalent like in mailman2?

Mailman and Exim 4.94.2 (Debian Bullseye)

Hi. I moved Mailman instance to a machine running Debian Bullseye last week. Ran into an issue with the Exim transport from this doc: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/docs/mta.h… The issue I ran into was that Exim wasn't able to resolve localhost in order to connect to the LMTP listener. I changed VPS provider at the same time (moved from Bytemark to Gandi) so not sure if they were doing anything different with DNS, but by default Exim doesn't use standard libraries to lookup hosts: https://www.exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch-the_dnslookup_… I solved the issue by using the following configuration on the Mailman router: # /etc/exim4/conf.d/transport/55_mm3_transport mailman3_transport: driver = smtp protocol = lmtp allow_localhost gethostbyname hosts = localhost port = MM3_LMTP_PORT rcpt_include_affixes = true I haven't defined the lmtp settings at all in mailman.cfg meaning they are using the default settings of 127.0.0.1:8024. Is this the best modification to make to the Exim config or should I go an alternative route? Thanks. Andrew.

I'm getting (many) uncaught bounce messages for one user. Other than forcibly unsubscribing them, is there anything I can do? Is this document that Brian Carpenter wrote still valid? https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Howto_Install_Mailman3_On_Debian10 Brian installed my instance. Now its broken. My lists are down. I'm getting nowhere with diagnostics and troubleshooting (which was easier with mailman 2). I'm considering a new install, hence the question. Thanks!

I've encountered an issue where Mailman3 is looking for an older jquery package after updating HyperKitty to 1.3.5. I found the error below via Firefox developer tools. Postorius web issues after upgrading mailman 3

Hello, I hope someone could help me in relation to this issue. I have experienced some error with my mailman3 deployment (only in postorius web) after went through the upgrading procedure following https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/upgrade-3.2.html#upgrading-mailman-3 I believe this is nothing else then the wrong css/js files gone to the wrong directory or they aren't implemented properly. Basically some part of it works ok and some doesn't. The following web pages doesn't seem to be implementing the css/js files is Archives, Account, Posting Activity, Log in and Log out web pages. API privileges question for mailman3

In mailman3 documentation it says: "Because the REST server has full administrative access, it should never be exposed to the public internet. By default it only listens to connections on localhost." So I just wanted to confirm there is no way to limit API access? For example I have a group that wants to use API access to mange their mail lists, but from what I can gather, if I give them access to the API they would have access to ALL the mail lists etc.. I would suspect this is even true if I give them their own domain? Is there anyway to limit access via the API to certain lists etc.....

I'm posting here first (rather than submitting a bug report on GitLab) because I'm not sure if I've overlooked a configuration setting. We're running the latest versions of the various Mailman 3 packages on Ubuntu 20.04, using Postfix as the MTA. Mailman 3 has been configured to apply DMARC mitigation unconditionally, replacing From: with the list address. The situation we're seeing is that if person A sends an email from a Google account to Mailman 3 and receives the (modified) post back from Mailman 3, the message ID is not being changed. Google's behaviour then is not to show that message to the user because it thinks it is the same message that the user sent out. Since Mailman 3 is modifying the message, it ought to have a different message ID. Is that a configuration setting I've missed or a bug, please? Thank you. Regards Philip

Folks, I needed to migrate my previously-sqlite based mailman core to mariadb, and have more or less managed it, though I feel certain the table schema I ended up with is not what mailman would have created for itself. Is there any way to get a copy of the mysql/mariadb table schema that I can then pour the existing data into (i.e. I don't want to reinitialise the db)? I'm having a lot of trouble with trying to set up mailman3 on my mail server. It's on an AWS instance, running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. All software is installed from Ubuntu packages. Mailman version is 3.2.2. The problem I am trying to troubleshoot first is how this can be happening: Oct 14 11:27:26 2021 (2341) ACCEPT: <f36e1ed0-9d25-b661-9c94-4ce999f6d5fd(a)elyograg.org> Oct 14 11:27:27 2021 (2344) Cannot connect to SMTP server 127.0.0.1 on port 25 From the shell, I can "telnet localhost 25" successfully, even as the "list" user. Apparmor is disabled. The UFW firewall is enabled, which allows all traffic on the loopback interface. I disabled ipv6 at the kernel level, but had the same problem with ipv6 enabled, so I don't think ipv6 is related at all. I do not see any connections in the postfix log that correspond to the mailman connection error. From a fresh install of mailman, I created two mailing lists. Once upon a time I had those lists active on a Debian 6 machine running mailman 2.1.13 ... I copied the mailing list config from that machine over and used the "import21" facility to import the configuration into the new mailman3 install. That worked without error and I can see the lists and their members with the "mailman" command. I found instructions for integration with postfix, and added the required three config lines to the postfix config. When I try to send a message to the list, I get what I pasted above in the mailman log. I think that means the postfix integration is working, and is forwarding to mailman. I'm hoping somebody can give me some pointers, and if more information is needed for troubleshooting, let me know what is needed. I'm also having trouble with the web UI ... I thought I had found what to do with Apache, but it's having problems and I do not know what to do so it works. The UI is not super important right now, I'd like to get the lists working first. I first tried to get help on the IRC channel, but that appears to be a dead end. I did give it several hours. Thanks, Shawn

'Failed adding message' error when migrating a list from mailman2 to mailman3

Hello, I'm in the process of migrating some of the lists from mailman2 to mailman3. I'm getting the below error message when I migrate a particular list. *2%Failed adding message <mailman.2.1593699619.32248>: 'ascii' codec can't encode character '\ufffd' in position 252: ordinal not in range(128).* I ran the check_hk_import script before migrating and it was not giving any error. This release includes some changes in the authentication between mailman-hyperkitty plugin and Hyperkitty. For that reason, it is important to upgrade both Hyperkitty and mailman-hyperkitty plugin to the latest versions, or it could result in a broken installation. This release of Hyperkitty has bugfixes, some new features and some security enhancements. Trying to get mailman3 in docker working with external Mysql database

Our database group has created the database with (charset=utf8mb4&use_unicode=1) and a user For my docker-compose.yaml I will only have two container sections mailman-core mailman-web which should have these database variables set under each: -DATABASE_URL=mysql+pymysql://[database_user]:[database_password]@[database.server.ip]:[databseport]/[database_name] - DATABASE_TYPE=mysql - DATABASE_CLASS=mailman.database.mysql.MySQLDatabase Are these all correct? in looking at documentation should it be: DATABASE_URL=mysql+pymysql://[database_user]:[database_password]@[database.server.ip]:[databseport]/[database_name]?charset=utf8mb4&use_unicode=1 Or/and should I also use? DATABASE_URL=mysql+pymysql://.... or DATABASE_URL=mysql://... or DATABASE_URL=pymysql://.... Do I have to install pymysql? or is it installed in the dock images? Do I have to run any other commands on the database first? I assume mailman does everything it needs for the database at first launch?

Activation of HyperKitty archive on Debian

Is there a straighforward instruction how to make it work on Debian Bullseye? All instructions I find seem to use the git method, and also there are warnings to mix the methods. Installing mailman3 with Debian methods was straightforward, and worked out of the box. Though it purged my mailman2 installation without warning, that was a hard blow. Had to reinstall all my lists in a night session. Also lost the old archives and can't get the new get running.

Broken web interface Ubuntu 20.04

Hello, Whilst I wasn't looking something has broken the web interface to mailman on our list server. On the list index page I get the Postorius header, but no list index, instead a Page not found error. Curiously the Postorius header is also broken, the links point to https://host/mailman/(postorius/lists|hyperkitty) not https://host/mailman3/(postorius/lists|hyperkitty) like it should I've poked around and I can't find any useful errors and I don't know exactly when this happened, but I think it was this week. Mailman itself is running happily underneath. Any suggestions as to what might have gone wrong? Simon P.S.
