Hello everyone. I am trying to sort out an error happening when messages are sent to the mailman server. Ansible role to install Mailman3

Hi, Before installing the Mailman Suite, I searched on https://galaxy.ansible.com/ for Ansible roles that might automate the whole process. https://github.com/galaxyproject/ansible-mailman3 turned out to be quite good. However, it was slightly out-of-date. I cloned it, made a few bug fixes, and corrected linting errors. Then, going further, added optional basic installations of Nginx, Postfix, PostgreSQL into the role. If anyone is installing Mailman they are welcome to try it out. https://github.com/cppalliance/ansible-mailman3 Now, I see there was a discussion on this very list about https://github.com/rivimey/ansible-mailman3 which was also a fork of natefoo's repo. What are the differences? As Stephen Turnbull wrote: "her (rivimey's) setup may be more complicated than most folks need (IIRC, she has a multi-homed setup with Mailman core, Postorius, and HyperKitty on three separate IPs on a separate subnet in the DMZ, while Mailman was really designed for three Mailman applications running on the same host, along with the database server and MTA)." My version of the role didn't follow the tactic of "three separate IPs on a separate subnet in the DMZ". Mainly, it adds postfix and postgres. Fixes small errors. Also, in a git branch of the repository named mailman3-core, I removed all the web code, so there is a version of the role that only installs core. We will use that while bundling the web components into another Django app, already deployed with docker. There is an open question about maintenance. Among the three roles mentioned here, which is being actively kept up-to-date? Perhaps there are no guarantees from any of them. At this instant in time, https://github.com/cppalliance/ansible-mailman3 is the most recent. Would it make sense to mention these roles in the official documentation? Not sure. Installing mailman3 is complicated and because of that, is a good fit for Ansible.

Mailman3 core didn't start after reboot, because mysql wasn't running yet.

Hi - We had a power outage, and after my Ubuntu server rebooted , mailman 3 tried to start before mysql was running. I guess because it wasn't a clean reboot, the mysql server took much longer than normal to start, while checking databases. So mailman3 couldn't start. Normal reboots never had this problem. Should it have kept trying? In any event, mailman3 core didn't start, but mailman3-web did start. But it wasn't very happy, of course. And any time someone tried to access the mailing list website, it would send me an error message. I had hundreds of such emails in the morning., that started with the one below. Is there a way to configure my system to make sure this doesn't happen again? Something wrong in Django admin interfaces

Hi, Since both Mark and Danil kindly told me that my wish to disable web anonymous account registering requires new version of mailman and django-mailman, I found that newest Debian bookwarm (12) has * mailman 3.3.8-1 (including mailman3-full and mailman3-web 20200530-2.1) * python3-django-mailman3 : 1.3.9-1 * python3-mailman-hyperkitty : 1.2.1 So I re-installed mailman3 (and took notes so that I could write a blog). After installing that, I found that it has problems in django admin page. When I clicked any features like users, Mail domains, Failed tasks... anyone, no matter New or Change, the web page was covered by the first page. All the configuration fields/labels are covered by the first page. Any possible way to reduce robot spam accounts?

Hi, I just installed a mailman3 instance, even haven't announced to anyone yet, there are a lot of spam robot accounts registering into my system. (See https://nextcloud.slat.org/index.php/s/WWHo7F3igYxn8LY for screenshot) I really have no idea how the robots find my system since I haven't told anyone the ip or URL of my mailman instance. And, they're registering on the system, not the mailing list since I have only one list for testing now and it wasn't assaulted by spam yet. No matter what, what I want to ask is that, is there a way to either * just let users join from email (lists-join(a)lists.url) instead of registering on the mailman instance? or * use a scheme like CAPTCHA to reduce the successful opportunity of robot registering? List mails blocked from GMX - web.de > Spamfolder

How can I configure Mailman3 so that Mails from the list will not be blocked by gmx.net I tried to send with the same user (mailman.cf) at my mail server, which will not be blocked by gmx. unfortunately, I get no bounce back message. They do just not appear in the mail folder of gmx. At web.de they go to the SPAM folder.

Import old mails into list

Hi, I just built a new mailman3 instance. I installed directly on Debian using mailman3-full and follow /usr/share/doc/mailman3/README.Debian to set up database/web. Then I'd like to import some old mail (in a mbox file) into this list. I searched for any documentation but all I got is Import list data (from 2.1): https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/release-3.0/src/mailman/comma… How do I import an archive into a new mailing list: https://wiki.list.org/DOC/How%20do%20I%20import%20an%20archive%20into%20a%2… The first is import list data, not list contents (mails). The second is very old, written in 2007, and now I even can't find bin/arch commands. And when I tried `django-admin hyperkitty_import` it even told me "Unknown command: 'hyperkitty_import'". Could anyone please tell me how to import old mails from mbox file into a new mailing list? Configure administrative users via command line?

I recently migrated a mailing list from Mailman 2.x to Mailman 3.x. Sending messages to and receiving messages from the list seems to work well. The web interface archives seem to be working well. Xapian is configured as the search engine. With only 60K some messages, archive search seems very fast. How can I configure administrative users via command line? I need to process a moderation request. I have root access on the server. A pointer to the appropriate documentation would be more than welcome. Thank you to anyone who can provide help. Ken

where do I find the text of a bounce email ?

All, I am trying to figure why a particular outbound message was bounced, so I'm looking for the text of the NDR that was sent - where do I find that ? Fyi, the outbound message was accepted by the first relay, and then presumably later bounced by the actual recipient server (Office365). Hyperkitty list overview error: thread matching query does not exist

archives html user interface menu selection retention after refresh

I have just started studying the archives feature and I've noticed that if I select "Most Active" in the top menu and then I refresh my browser, the refreshed screen jumps back to Recent after the refresh. In fact, if ANY of the five menu items across the top are selected and then a browser refresh is performed, the result is that one is always taken back to the Recent menu item. It was not apparent to me for a couple of days that this was happening and I'd convinced myself there was some bug in the Recent vs. Most Active lists because the Most Active list changed entirely after I did a refresh, when, in fact, I was then viewing the Recent list again. Confusing. Is there some way that whatever menu item was being viewed before a refresh could be retained so that the same menu item is shown after a refresh? Thinking this through even further, I suppose a side-affect of this request could be that visiting the same page much later (ie. not immediately after a refresh) may result in the page NOT defaulting to the Recent menu item any longer (unless once could clear the "last menu item" memory when the viewer moves AWAY from or closes the page). I don't have enough familiarly with the interface to suggest if this would be a bad side-effect, or good, but would this, indeed become a side-affect that would have to be thought through?

The mailman.cfg file on the system I am working on includes this line: url: postgres://mailman3:mailman3:@localhost/mailman3 This works fine as long as the postgresql server is at the default port number of 5432. How do I specify a different TCP port number? My guess is that a change to this line is needed, but unfortunately, it is not obvious to me how to make that change, and I have been unable to find this information in the mailman3 documentation or in a previous mailing list post. Archive date/time vs elapsed time

Hi In the archive's "Recent", "Most active" etc displays, the date and time of each post is shown. However, when viewing by "Thread" listing, each post shows the elapsed time since it was posted ie. the number of days, hours since it was posted (eg. 1 day, 2 hours). Is it possible to set Hyperkitty to display the "Thread" listing with the date/time in place of that elapsed time? Thanks Mark

Postorius claims 2 messages held when there are none - out of sync

When I view a list via Postorius the "Held Messages" menu item has an inverse-red-"2" next to it, as if there are two held messages. There are, in fact, no messages in "/opt/mailman/mm/var/queue/*" (assuming the held messages should be in "pipeline" subdirectory). When I click on "Held Messages" I get "Something went wrong" followed by "HTTP Error 500: {"title": "500 Internal Server Error"}". How do I fix this?

Problems after upgrading from bullseye to bookworm

I upgrade my server to bookworm. In the process python was upgraded from 3.7 to 3.9 . I reinstalled the virtualenv and the mailman packages. When I now start mailman-web, I get this in web/logs/uwsgi-error.log: pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound: The 'flufl.lock>=4.0' distribution was not found and is required by hyperkitty What did I miss? ___________________________________________ Mailman's content filtering has removed the following MIME parts from this message. Replaced multipart/alternative part with first alternative.

attachment.html

Hi, Using a typical modern email client such as Gmail, the messages are usually html formatted. Then, Hyperkitty displays attachment.html on every message. Can that be removed? I was searching for the topic "attachment.html" in the archives and there wasn't much information. What finally cracked the code was Mark's comment: If in Postorius on the list's Settings -> Alter Messages page, Filter Content and Convert html to plaintext are both Yes, the HTML should be converted to plain text and that should appear in HyperKitty. It turns out "Filter content" affects many settings. It's easy to skip over that. I wonder if the UI might call attention somehow, with a graphic element, or with text: "Settings on this page will not take effect. Because 'Filter content' has not been enabled". It is right that "Filter content" must be set in order to remove attachment.html ? And now, a search will have more results. :-)

clicking on a username when viewing a thread results in "Page not found"

If I click on a username when viewing a thread, it returns "Page not found" then "This page either doesn't exist, or it moved somewhere else.". Any idea why this may be happening? Also, why is it that some usernames are not clickable (ie. black text with no hyperlink)? Thanks! Ken

old usernames appearing in mailman.log

I have just migrated from a mailman 3.2.2 Debian package installation to a mailman 3.3.8 source install (in a Python virtual environment as mailman user) on an Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS system. Several months ago, the system had been upgraded from mailman V2 to mailman V3.2.2. The server has been active for over 20 years. I've just taken on the project so I'm new to all of this, and one thing I noticed that caught my eye, and has left me curious, is that for the first a couple of seconds starting just after midnight every night (just after log rotation) mailman.log would have many (dozens, or hundreds) of lines entered in it just like this one: Jun 19 00:00:04 2023 (2266) 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.0/users/old-user(a)domain.tld HTTP/1.1" 404 58 where "old-user(a)domain.tld" is the email address of a user who either had unsubscribed or changed their email address (I don't know which, I just know they are no longer a member/subscriber to the list). Each successive entry in the log would have a different "old username" in it. I don't understand why these entries would be in the log and what they mean. Can someone shed some light on this for me? This is merely a question of curiosity, and not one of import. (Since migrating from 3.2.2 to 3.3.8 this behavior has stopped, be that GOOD or BAD.) Ken

Global ban using regex

Using some regex testers and generators like https://regex101.com and https://www.site24x7.com/tools/regex-parser.html, the regex (.*)(a)inker\.azerbaijan\.su seems to match EVERYTHING(a)inker.azerbaijan.su (EVERYTHING is constantly changing in current spam mails). However, entering the regex to the Global Ban Add ban /postorius/bans/ result in: `An error occurred: Invalid Parameter "email": Expected a valid email address or regular expression, got (.*)(a)inker\.azerbaijan\.su.'` Same result when using [Ban list] in postorius/lists/[LISTNAME]/bans/. Entering a none regex addresses like eknejfj(a)inker.azerbaijan.su works fine. I see the below in my mailman.log, yet I installed uwsgi and NOT gunicorn. My mainmanweb.service file includes "ExecStart=/opt/mailman/venv/bin/uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini" and not the gunicorn equivalent. Does this log entry make sense in my case? messages stuck in the bad queue

I am working on a mail server that was migrated from mailman V2 to mailman V3 in February. I just noticed that there are over 1000 messages in the bad queue. All of the messages in the bad queue are dated 2/2/23 and all have a timestamp within a one-hour window of each other. I used mailman qfile to inspect five random emails in the bad queue and so far they are all "successfully subscribed" emails, but I presume there are no guarantees there aren't others mixed in there that might be legitimate emails (ie. I just unshunted 140 emails in the shunt queue and they were all good emails and all got processed). I figure that the easiest way to inspect these 1000 emails is just to have them re-delivered. I tried moving one from the bad queue to the shunt queue and I ran "mailman unshunt" but nothing happened. Is there a way to reprocess the bad queue? Also, what exactly is the bad queue? re-injecting emails that were not archived

I have just migrated from a mailman 3.2.2 Debian package installation to a mailman 3.3.8 source install (in a Python virtual environment as mailman user) on an Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS system. Several months ago, the system had been upgraded from mailman V2 to mailman V3.2.2. I noticed when I came onto the project last week that there were 140 messages stuck in the "shunt" queue for the two lists hosted by this server (I have no idea why and the old logs were not available and I don't recall the results of "mailman qfile", assuming that had shed some light on the reason why they were shunted). In any event, I unshunted these messages and they flowed out to the subscriber's email addresses successfully. What I was not expecting is that the system did not inject any of these emails into the archive. AFAICT, the messages are no longer anywhere on the system (but I could be mistaken). Here are my questions: 1) Why would these emails not have been injected into the archive? 2) Is there some way for me to re-inject these messages into the two lists? The only place I (THINK I) have them is in my own personal IMAP box since I'm a subscriber to the lists. 3) Can this be done without the emails being re-delivered to subscribers? Thank you, Ken

As an aside, for anyone else who is trying to do the same (and to give some background into my procedures so far), I have been following these references: <https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/…> <https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#setup-virtualenv> My goal is to create the least change to file locations and configuration files as possible (I may move things into more "source-installed centric" locations once I have things working again), thus, many files are still in the original Debian package-allocated directories. That said, I was forced to move mailman3web.db to /opt/mailman/web as sqlite (and, hence, mailman-web) simply could not open the database as user mailman from my virtual environment (even with mailman3web.db file permissions set to 777 and owner.group set to mailman.mailman). So far I've gotten mailman running properly and handling the mailing lists, however, I have not gotten the web interface working again.

Importing MBOX from custom listserv to MM3?

We are looking at moving from a home grown listserv system at a client to potentially MailMan3 for the lists platform instead. We have historic thread data from the homegrown systems in mbox form. Is there a way to import that into MM3 for indexing in the archiver there so we dont need to keep the (literally massive) MBOX file? Sent from my Galaxy

Then I attempt to rebuild the archive. # python3 manage.py update_index_one_list LISTNAME@DOMAIN Indexing 3 emails The import or rebuild has failed as it's just rebuilding the existing archive of the 3 test messages. Where in database are subject prefix sequences stored?

I am using numeric prefixes for a list, such that it's `[ListName-000012]`. Where would that sequence indicator be stored in the database? Postorious' database? Hyperkitty's database? I ask because I'm rebuilding a home-grown listserv solution using Mailman3 and the main requirement is the thread IDs being *properly sequential* with the current implementation, so I have to set the "next ID in sequence" to a start value. I don't see this clearly in the DB where the sequence value would be stored, so if anyone knows that'd be great to know so I can get this working. Thomas

Help needed to create filters that were working in Mailman 2.

How do I make a filter that if it matches, it accepts the message and doesn't check the remaining filters? I could do this using the anti-spam filters in mailman 2, as there was a Accept option. But there is no Accept option in Mailman 3 (that I can find). I tried using "Default antispam action", but that didn't stop the rest of the filters from being applied. I recognize that most real computer systems now are equipped with multiple CPUs, usually with each CPU having multiple cores or hardware threads. But when one obtains a computer system from a service provider with a small expected load, it is likely that a virtual computer system will provide only a single core. Yes, one can obtain a multi-core virtual system, maybe for only twice the cost; but it would seem wasteful to make that choice solely to support starting and stopping the Mailman3 program when the system load at all other times is satisfied by a single core system. From my observations, mailman 3.3.8 is unreliable when running on a single core system. When `mailman start` is issued, there is a moderately high probability that one or more of the thirteen runner processes will not survive this startup phase. Depending upon the current usage of the mailman installation, one may or may not notice this fact. In either case, `mailman status` provides the same information, with no hint of missing or damaged capabilities when one or more of the runner processes are stillborn. [1] One potential improvement would be to increase the lifetime of the locks used by each of the runner processes during `mailman start`. [2] Based on a small sample of runs of `mailman start`, this change may provide correctness (i.e. I have yet to see a runner process go MIA). But it still seems unsatisfactory for availability / performance, as the elapsed wall clock time for the system to settle down and be functional and responsive is approximately 13 minutes. While this is an improvement from the 20 minute or greater delays observed before making this change, it still differs greatly from the nearly instantaneous startup time experienced on multicore / multiprocessor systems. The best "performance" I have yet obtained on this single core system is WITHOUT the change in [2] below, but by crossing abstraction boundaries and reducing the amount of time this single CPU spends futilely busy waiting for itself when it has not provided an opportunity for another process (maybe even the process currently holding the desired lock) to make any progress. [3] With this change, "only" 9 minutes elapsed wall clock time is wasted (with maybe only the middle 4 minutes at 100% CPU utilization) before the system settles down and is functional and responsive. However, ample room for improvement remains. [4] Please suggest better ideas or corrections. In the case of Mailman3, sleeping for a fixed duration shorter than 20 seconds retains the original problem of broken locks and runner process death, while sleeping for a fixed duration longer than 20 seconds leads to an increase in both the wall clock delay time as well as the CPU time consumed during `mailman start`. I have not experimented with random or staggered delays, which may further reduce the number of simultaneously blocked waiters for this lock. [4] I have seen `mailman start`complete in less than 1 second wall clock time on a multicore / multiprocessor system. All of these observations made with mailman 3.3.8 as installed via pip.

Where does sender postorius@ come from?

I just realized, that mails for registering an account and/or resetting ones password are obviously sent from postorius@SERVE_FROM_DOMAIN. Why are they not sent from MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL? The problem is: - an account is trying to register with a mailaddress from a HostEurope-server - HostEurope-Servers are doing Sender-Callouts (bad practise :-D) to verify that a mailaccount exists - mail is then bouncing, b/c those are not answered (shoud I?): status=bounced (host [80.237.138.5] said: 550-Sender verification is required but failed. - bounce then can't be processed, since mailaccount does not exist :-D status=bounced (mail for SERVE_FROM_DOMAIN loops back to myself) Am I missing something are shouldn't it be better to send those mails from MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL? (I don't want to mess with these sender callouts or change anything, HostEurope has been a little bit of a pain in the ... with mailinglists and not much help at all). Thanks in advance, Jens.

Proxy error.

My server has several aliases. And Chrome's cookies sometimes get messed up because of it. Several users get a proxy error when trying to connect to the mailman website. One person just fixed it by clearling cookies, although this is not a great solution. Error log says "You may need to add 'psfcmail2.psfc.mit.edu' to ALLOWED_HOSTS". mailman3 auto-disabling of subscriptions

I'm running an email list on mailman3. My users are getting inundated by messages saying that their subscriptions have been disabled due to their bounce score exceeding the mailing list's bounce_score_threshold. But there is nothing wrong with these users' email accounts. They are all perfectly fine. Apparently the issue is somehow related to spam. Whenever I (as admin) get these emails, I just unsubscribe the user and then re-subscribe them. But also, the user gets confused and emails me about it, which unnecessarily takes up their time and mine. The relevant list settings are currently... bounce score threshold: 5 bounce info stale after: 7d bounce disabled warning interval: 7d bounce disable warnings: 5 What's the best way to fix this? I'm considering reducing "bounce info stale after" to "2d" and/or increasing "bounce disabled warning interval" to "90d".

Postorius -owner messages

I manage a number of lists for non-technical users that are considered owners of their own lists. Some of them have expressed that they would like to emulate some other mailing list services' "Quiet" owners for people that need to be able to access the list settings for administrative reconciliation as well as a fallback, but want to leave subscription requests or approval of messages to others that are more involved in the day-to-day management. They'd like to disable owner delivery for themselves, and I'd like to not make the change for them using the shell every time I get one of their requests. We have a Postorius front end set up and working, but it doesn't appear that disabling delivery using the List-based preferences in the Postorius interface stops those Owner communications. Is there a way to allow users to disable that natively in Postorius? Thanks, Sam

The proxy server could not handle the request Reason: Error reading from remote server Apache/2.4.52 (Ubuntu) Server at lists.psfc.mit.edu Has anybody else in an errorlike this before? One person manage to get around this by going in incognito mode on the browser. Does that make any sense?

unrequested unsubscription

I have a Mailman 3 email list, running on Mailman 3.3.3 on Debian 11. A few of the list members are reporting that they received Email Address Unsubscription Confirmation emails, but claim that they never requested to be unsubscribed. (All are Gmail users. but they might be coincidental, since most list members are Gmail users.) Has anyone seen this behavior before? Any ideas on what might be happening?

How to remove a message with an invalid Message-Id?

I have a fun problem: apparently a message sent to a mailing list has an invalid Message-Id (I think), which is causing the message parse to fail while attempting to archive the message. Unfortunately, the message seems to be trapped somewhere and resulting in error logging every few minutes. Is there any way to find and remove the message? List moderators (and list administrators) are sent daily reminders of requests pending approval, like subscriptions to a moderated list, or postings that are being held for one reason or another. Setting this option causes notices to be sent immediately on the arrival of new requests as well. Hi - I migrated from mailman 2 to mailman 3. All but one list is working correctly. That list is not sending the moderator any emails. It appears to configured exactly like the other lists. I.e. subscription requests and moderated users posts don't generate any emails to the moderator (me). I tried changing moderator email addresses, and everything else I could think of, but nothing worked. What can I do to debug this problem? This list is much larger than any of my other lists. And has a huge archive. I doubt that is a factor, but I’ll mention it anyway. Also, how do I run the command to remind me of awaiting moderation requests, so that I can run it hourly? In case this can’t be fixed quickly. As an aside, I had some mailman 2 lists that had no moderators. I could swear that for them, that the owners would get moderated requests. Am I hallucinating? I can't check the old server any longer. Thanks. – Mark

Setting moderation_action when approving a message from a non-member fails

Hello! When a message is held due to it being from a non-member, I notice that Mailman creates a non-member record for the sender automatically. This is great! But if I try to set their moderation action while approving the message in Postorius, I get: Failed to set moderation action: xxx(a)gmail.com is not a member address of xxx(a)xxx.org Is this expected? Read-Mostly list?

I wish to have a list that anyone can read. A few designated people can post without moderation, and all other users are moderated. Is this possible? I don't see a way in the list settings to create users who are not moderated when the default action is to moderate. Thanks! -- Steve

Mailman sends Welcome emails, but does not send [List] postings emails

Having recently installed this same version of mailman (GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer)) a few times successfully, I have a puzzle with a current new installation. Via the command line I can create lists and add members, and the new members receive their Welcome message from mailman. But when a member sends an email to post to a list (e.g. hc(a)cs.org as shown here), the mailserver delivers it to mailman: May 29 16:36:58 localhost postfix/lmtp[44386]: E762E427CB: to=<hc(a)cs.org>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:8024, delay=0.84, delays=0.8/0/0.01/0.03, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Ok) but no copy is sent to the members / subscribers. After the posts are received by mailman (as recorded in /var/tmp/mailman/logs/smtp.log), nothing more is added in any of the log files in /var/tmp/mailman/logs/... An attempt to imitate a technique seen elsewhere for [logging.smtp] for leaving some breadcrumbs by adding into mailman.cfg: - - - [logging.subscribe] level: debug path: mailman.log - - - and restarting mailman led to no detectable change. Expecting no change, I even changed for one UNmoderated list: >>> dump_json('http://localhost:8001/3.1/lists/hc.cs.org' ... Migration failure (2.1.29 to 3.3.8 on Debian testing)

Hello, I have both the mailman and mailman3-full packages installed on my machine and I'm following the migration guide located here: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html Running the command { mailman import21 mylist(a)mysite.com /var/lib/mailman/lists/mylist/config.pck } completes once I create the list but states that it cannot convert the msg_footer and digest_footer mailing list attributes. (I might also point out that the { mailman create mylist(a)mysite.com } command isn't actually documented on that webpage.) I can't seem to find the manage.py script in my $PATH and after searching, I find it as part of the mailman3-web package. When I run { sudo -H -u list python manage.py hyperkitty_import mylist(a)mysite.com /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/mylist.mbox/mylist.mbox }, it fails with "ImportError: No module named django.core.management". If I run the script directly as { sudo -H -u list /usr/share/mailman3-web/manage.py ... }, I get "PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/share/mailman3-web/settings_local.py'". By default, settings_local.py's group is www-data, and not knowing where to go next, I decided to try changing that file's group to list. When I re-ran the command (as user list), I got a Python traceback that gives "PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/mailman3/web/mailman-web.log'". Next, I changed the file's group back to list and decided to try running the manage.py script as the www-data user. This results in "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/django_q/conf.py:139: UserWarning: Retry and timeout are misconfigured." and "System check identified some issues:" followed by a list of "Auto-created primary key used when not defining a primary key type, by default 'django.db.models.AutoField'" warnings for a number of Django tables. At the end of this list is "CommandError: The list address must be given on the command-line". But it *was* given. My questions are: 1. How do I undo any damage (if any) my efforts may have caused? 2. What's the correct way to run manage.py?

Subscribe to a list on a Mailman3 server without account registration

Hello, I might miss something here but I'm confused about a difference between Mailman2 and 3. On MM2 I just subscribed a mailinglist via my EMail address. I didn't need to create an account on the MM2 server first. But it seems on MM3 it is otherwise. For example I use MM3 on python.org. Hi, I'm using mailman 3.3.8. Some messages with attachments from Google users get rejected by spam filters because of invalid DKIM signatures. It seems, that mailman alters some lines in the body. Why are "Subscription options" left unselected if I don't manually select them?

When I subscribe to a mailing list, and I don't manually select some of the "Subscription options", they are left unselected when I go back to look at them. I would have thought that if I didn't make a selection, that they would be set to a default option. Or am I wrong? Thanks.

dmarc mitigation debug

Hi gang! I have a list with DMARC mitigation action "Replace From: with list address" DMARC Mitigate unconditionally "Yes". But list posts still have the poster's From:, breaking DMARC. How can I debug this? For a start, I looked in my sqlite database. Changes on the web interface list settings seem to be correctly applied to the database. Importing mailman 2 shows member's "Moderation Action" = "Default processing". But new members show = "None". Why

I imported my mailing lists from mailman 2. If I view the Members, it say "Moderation Action" = "Default processing". But when I now subscribe myself or other people to the list, and view the new Members, it say "Moderation Action" = "None" for them. Should that be happening? The mailing list 's "Default action to take when a member posts to the list" setting is set to "Default processing". Thanks. - Mark

How do you remove the Hold on all non-member forwarded emails?

Hi Mailman3 users, I have recently started using mailman3 and it's a wonderful piece of software. But I am having trouble using one of its configurations. I configured my mailmain3 instance to accept all non-member emails, as I want all emails that are sent to the mailman client to go to all subscribers without having it held for moderation -- I did this by setting this setting: https://i.imgur.com/PGzaD0k.png Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined. (Details for generic_nonmember_action) -> "Accept" But this doesn't work for forwarded emails. Even if the email address that is being forwarded from is included in the "List of non-member addresses whose postings should be automatically accepted." I noticed that all emails that are forwarded to the mailing list are always held for moderation -- though this isn't the case for email that are sent to the mailing list directly. But I want it so that emails that are even forwarded to my mailman mailing list don't get held in moderation. How do I set mailman to do this? I was thinking if there is no way to configure this easily then I might have to do this from the code, which means I might have to ask on the developer mailing list -- or I have to go with an entirely different solution (using something other than mailman3). I hope someone here is willing to help, and in either case thanks for anyone that is willing enough to read this. Sincerely,

How to edit default 'Reject (with notification)' message

Dear all, I want to modify the default text sent in response to when we select 'Reject (with Notification)' in 'Message Acceptance > Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list' settings. Currently, the default rejection text is as follows: "Your message to the $list was rejected for the following reasons: The message is not from a list member The original message as received by Mailman is attached." I have created a template with the option, "Notice sent to a poster when their message has been rejected by the list’s moderator." but it only works if message acceptance is set to 'Hold for Moderation' and then the moderator rejects the post manually. Is there any source file, which I can modify to replace the default rejection text mentioned above? Sincerely, Zee

Virtual alias + shell

Hello, I want to have a mailman configured together with virtual alias. To do that I need to use alias_domain. I have tried to do it with mailman shell. The domain seams to be created but when I leave the shell and enter again, the domain is not longer there. On the other hand, If I create a domain in administrator interface, it is not listed in the shell. If I create in the web interface, which field correspond to the alias_domain : Domain Name, Display Name , Mail domain? Subscribing users stuck in pending hell

Hi, We frequently end up with users who never receive their email to confirm their account, leaving them in a netherworld where they cannot become list members. If I try to subscribe them via the mass subscribe option, it says I can't because their subscription is pending. If I go to subscription requests, it says there are 0. If I go to "non-members" in the UI, I can find them, but I don't see an option to convert them to members. So what's the solution to getting these people subscribed and no longer stuck in limbo? not correct language in subject(s)

When receiving all types of system mails from mailman3 (3.3.8) there are almost all the subjects in English, althought text is in German. Am I missing somehting? The option to have the list in german is toggled and so far all the mails are in german ... also templates on different levels work fine, either en or de, but obviously the subjects are not translated (?) or taken from an English template. Any hint is appreciated, regards, Jens.

Template URI gets written incorrectly

Hi, When I create a template, it writes the URI incorrectly into the template table in the mailman3 database and the list stops working. For example, it writes: http://localhost/mailman3/postorius/api/templates/list/markslist.lists.post… When I correct it like so, all is well: https://lists.postmark.io/mailman3/postorius/api/templates/list/markslist.l… Have I missed a config setting somewhere, or is this a bug with the older Debian Mailman 3.3.3 ? /Mark

Multiple server replicas

Hello. Our Mailman 2.1 setup included 4 replica servers, all with Mailman, Exim4, Apache, etc. The configuration for the 4 mailman server instances were synchronized by linking most of the directories in /var/lib/mailman to an NFS share that is mounted on all 4 servers. Cron jobs were staggered such that an hourly job would run every 4 hours on each server, yet still get run hourly. With Mailman 3 we would like to keep the same kind of setup. However, things have changed quite a bit. Having both mailman and mailman-web instances all share their respective MySql/MariaDB databases is the easy part. For /var/lib/mailman3 it is a little less clear. So far I have symlinked messages, archives, lists, data, and templates onto the NFS share. I'm wondering about cache, locks, queue, and web/fulltext_index. Is there any standard or documented way of doing this? Thanks. -Dave -- Dave Hall Binghamton University kdhall(a)binghamton.edu

Apache shows No Lists

Running Debian 11. I have 6 mailing lists, but Apache2 says there are no lists. I have not been able to set up Postorius because nowhere is any information on *where* the configuration file is supposed to be located. I have found an example in /usr/share/doc/python3-django-hyperkitty/examples/settings.py But I don't know if this example is the right one, and I have no idea where the final file should go...

mass remove pending confirmation

Running Mailman 3.3.8 with docker. ----- Since we migrate some lists from mailman2 to 3, there are a lot of new users/subscribers and an admin made the mistake to not checkbox the 3. option that the users don't need to verify their address. Now we have a long list of pending confirmations in different lists. Is there an easy way in the shell to mass remove these pending mailaddresses so that we don't have to do that one by one? After updating my Linux server, my old Mailman 2.1 was wiped out. I now spend 2 full days desperately trying to get Mailman3 to work with Exim4 (and Apache2) Nothing works so far. Is there a correct way to remove the "Are you sure you want to logout" screen?

Hi - Is there a correct way to remove the "Are you sure you want to logout" screen, after I select to logout? It seems so impossible to accidentally logout. And even if I did, it's just very easy to log back in. I did hack logout.html, and used jquery to automatically click the button. But that feels like a real hack. Although it does work. :) - Mark

How does Mailman handle spf/dkim/dmarc? Specifically, does it re-signature originating sender emails not caring whether or not the originating email has proper spf/dkim/dmarc signatures? Or does it NOT re-signature originating sender email, i.e. just pass them through without alteration?

Hyperkitty using wrong email address in archive view

Hi Folks, I notice that for people with multiple email addresses, the email address that appears as the 'FROM' address in the hyperkitty archive is not the primary address, nor is it the address that the email actually came from, but the address that was created first. (Hyperkitty version 1.3.7) When I click on that from address in the archive view, I see all the email addresses for the user -- these do not match up with the ones in the django admin screen from .../admin/account/emailaddress/ When I see 'User profile for Fred Frog' it shows obsolete addresses (not subscribed, not in the Django profile for the user). How can I as administrator get rid of bogus addresses? Or do I have to ask each user to do this? and how can I ensure that the email address displayed in the archive is the primary address, not some address that no longer works? Peter C

Making "Mass subscribe" and "Mass removal" their own buttons in list_nav.html What stupid thing have I done wrong?

I want "Mass subscribe" and "Mass removal" as their own buttons, since I use them so much. I modified nav_list.html. See below. While the new buttons go to the correct page, the buttons don't get highlighted. I believe ootstrap navbar should be assigning "nav-link.active" class to the button that is clicked. But it doesn't. All the other buttons below work correctly. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Sendgrid experiences

Hi. I am temporarily using Sendgrid now on my Mailman instance. Initial observations have been positive. A list with 100 users is racking up email delivers though, I am on the basic paid account which gives me 50k emails per month. I was hoping to use a cheaper provider and pay overage costs per email on the assumption that I'm seeing a spike in traffic today because people have started getting the messages again. Sendgrid is maintaining the Message-Id header which is good for archiving. It is re-writing the Return-Path header though which means that bounce handling in Mailman won't work, but I think all the services do this in some way so I am happy to live with that for the moment. Replace "visit your dashboard" with URL link, like in Mailman 2.

Has anybody attempted to change the format of the emails that are sent to the owner of a mailing list, to include a URL, instead of stating "visit your dashboard"? The former is the behavior of Mailman 2. Is there any reason why this can't be done? If nobody has tried to do so yet, I'll give it a try myself, as I'm familiar with django. Hi, today I installed MM3 with Nginx on Debian 11 following the document with a bit of "Mailman 3 installation experience" thrown in (many thanks to the authors!) with some minor changes, i.e. no encryption, and "re_path" instead of "url". I cannot get the web interface to run. "admin" is OK, but Postorius und Hyperkitty refuse to show up with > Page not found (404) > Request Method: GET > Request URL: http://127.0.0.1:8000/mailman3/lists/ > > Using the URLconf defined in urls, Django tried these URL patterns, in this order: > > ^$ > ^postorius/ > ^hyperkitty/ > ^user-profile/delete$ [name='mm_user_account_delete'] > ^user-profile/$ [name='mm_user_profile'] > ^accounts/ > ^admin/ > > The current path, mailman3/lists/, didn’t match any of these. > > You’re seeing this error because you have DEBUG = True in your Django settings file. Hello, I’m an administrator of a MM3 with a lot of lists, which are generated and maintained through the rest api. For testing reasons I am looking for a way to send a test mail with a ping to a list in MM3 from a mail address of an administrator to get a pong from the MM3 - or even better - get a response with the status of the list like number of recipients, number of mails waiting for moderation, etc. Does exist a solution for such a purpose? I'm having issues with my lists. For each list I have created a template [ list:user:action:subscribe ]which has a prospective subscriber have to consent to list rules before they are subscribed. This template I created is listed in Postorius for each list. I have noticed that there are no other templates listed in Postorius. Furthermore, there is no 'lists' subdirectory under Mailman's var/templates/. Help (please)!

I am writing my own archive reader script in PHP which parses the "maildir" content produced by the "prototype" archiver. When I try to access the contents from "opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/prototype/LISTNAME/new" folder I get a permission denied error. *** I'm using the "file_get_contents" PHP command to access the file. ***

Because of my own personal horror stories of waking up to finding high priority linux servers broken, due to nightly automated updates, I now prevent automatic updates on my servers. I only do manual security updates. In addition to implementing modern security techniques for our network. That is just my personal belief system. It's worked for the past 25 years. The only time we ever got hacked, was because of some stupid php scripts that our developers had put online, or because people's passwords had become leaked. And some of those situations were nightmares also. In two case of which, happened while I was away on vacation, and I had to fix everything remotely. But that was never due to updates. I probably shouldn't express my opinion. But I have a lot of empathy for the guy who discovered his mailman broken due to upgraded Python. Which triggered my nightmares. But it's great though to have a very responsive community here, to bring people back from the dead. - Mark

Default Setting for 'Results per Page' and other Web Pull-downs

Hello. For the past several months I've been in the process of migrating from Mailman2 to Mailman3 (along with many other tasks). I've just started to use the web interface heavily as I am finally doing the full migration of all my 2.1 lists. Before I ask my question, I am currently running Debian 10 which supplies mailman-3.2.1 and mailman-web 0+20180916, which are definitely old at this point. Although I will soon move to Debian 11, I am still constrained to stick to Debian packages. So if this has been fixed or enhanced in a future version I'm sorry for asking an old question. My question: when I go to any page that has a list (of lists, of members, or archives), there are pulldowns like 'Results per page' that seem to reset to the minimum number when I refresh the page. There are others like 'Hide inactive' on the Archives page. What I'm looking for is a per-user way to customize these values so I don't have to keep on setting them to the value I prefer. Amazon SES, Message-ID, and mailman

Hi, We are running a mailman 2 mailing list, soon to upgrade to mailman 3. We recently switch the mail gateway from mailgun to Amazon SES. There's a new problem that the mailman 2 archives are not able to group threads together the way they were before. Moreover, end users have their own mail clients that display the list messages, and they are complaining about issues in their local mail clients. It seems to be related to the mail header fields Message-ID: , References: , and In-Reply-To: . Amazon SES rewrites the Message-ID. Therefore, it won't match the original Message-ID, and so the second reply email won't matched with the first email in a web archive display. Additionally, email replies are often sent both to the list and to individual participants, and so it's important that both of these copies have the identical message id. Has anyone else used Amazon SES as a mail gateway, and did you have success with it? Does this interpretation of the problem seem reasonable? Would it make sense to briefly discuss "Amazon SES" in an FAQ section of the mailman documentation? Thanks, Sam

How to see the admin password reset in docker with mailman3

I am setting up a new environment of Mailman3 in docker. I understand I have to reset the password to set the password for admin. I go to forget the password, in the GUI and I put in the address I have listed in the docker-compose.yaml and I never get the email. I look at the mail log on the host and I do not see the smtp connections. I assume Django is not using the docker host but sending the mail directly?? Basically, where can I see the password email rest mail logs to make sure an email was sent out and where it is going?

I added some email addresses manually to a mailing list and then removed them. But now I can't find how to totally remove them from mailman3. They show up in the Users list. When I go to the Django interface, I don't see them listed in any selection. I thought they would show up under Emails in Hyperkitty, but they are not there. Oddly, somehow I've managed to create multiple duplicates of the same address, under Emails. Figure that one out! Configuring sendmail without virtualtable? Is this possible?

I'm presently running mailman 2 on an email server, which all use @psfc.mit.edu addresses. And which uses /etc/aliases. The directions for configuring sendmail for mailman 3, specify using virtusertable. I want my new email server to also host mailman 3 on ubuntu. Is it still possible to use sendmail, given the following directions for sendmail configuration? Seems talk using might break things. Problems getting MM3 to work

I have been using mailman2 for some 15 years ... decided that it is time to upgrade to MM3. I have to admit that I am finding it very hard to do so. My target is a Rocky Linux machine (AKA CentOS/RedHat). I am doing a test install in a virtual Debian 10 machine - the idea is learn how it hangs together before reimplement on Rocky (where I tie things down with SELinux). For me the biggest problem is the poor documentation - for someone who is new at MM3 and is not a Python programmer. After a few false starts I am doing a virtualenv installation as described: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html (Changes: I am using mariadb not postgresql, apache not nginx) I am trying to set up the WSGI server. It thinks that my domain is example.com ... when I 'grep -r example.com /opt/mailman' I see 11338 lines - far too many to look through. Could someone please tell me what/where I configure to enter my test domain. Mailman Gurus -- I run a number of small lists for my neighborhood association. The largest of these is ~120 users. Typical volumes are about 2 messages/day. In the past week or so a number of users who use gmail as their email client have complained that list emails have been going to spam or "promotions" folders. I've always had 1 or 2 users who had trouble receiving mails, but this seems to be a significant percentage of all gmail users. I have DMARC mitigation set to unconditional, and the DMARC action set to "Replace From: with list address". My emails are sent using google workspace as my SMTP relay. I'm trying to teach my users to whitelist the list domain, but they are not, in general, a tech-savvy bunch, so it is slow going. Anyone else suddenly having trouble with gmail? Any suggestions? MASS mailing list import - 900 ezmlm lists to Mailman

Hi, I hope someone can help. I have 900-ish, mostly small lists, basically all locations round the globe where people have volunteered to help particular people passing though. Those lists have 2 to 200 people. There are about 50 lists of up to 1000 people each we use for announcements. So two different setups, and a whole lot of manual work. I am moving from an old, now unreliable, host to a new one. Hopefully reliable, certainly cheaper, and better for privacy GDPR etc regs. Mailman is already installed, appears to be version 82?? on cPanel 108.0.15. Ezmlm, no surprise, is not. Installing and configuring it is not something trivial, also have to install gmail etc. Yuck. So, Mailman... going through to create one, I can see that 900 will be my life's work. I'm not a programmer, but reasonably technical, write html, css skills poor but adequate, command line isn't tooo scary, MySQL I don't go near. DOS batch files no problem! :) ANY IDEAS / suggestions appreciated! Thanks, Grant

Postorius 1.3.6 does not work anymore when displaying the details of a list that I own (https://lists.XXX.org/mailman3/postorius/lists/rapcs-pilotes.listsXXXorg/) . It worked before but there was several upgrades in between (Ubuntu, apt packages, MySQL, Python). It displays the usual header/footer of the page but with "Something went wrong" above a red box with "HTTP Error 404:". /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log last entries are below (note the 404 result codes in the REST API): Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.1/users/d5...94 HTTP/1.1" 200 418 Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.1/users/d5...94/preferred_address HTTP/1.1" 404 0 Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.1/addresses/eric(a)XXX.org HTTP/1.1" 200 379 Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "POST /3.1/users/d5...94/preferred_address HTTP/1.1" 404 0 /var/log/mailman3/web/mailman-web.log of course has an exception about this 404 result code. Using the MM3 shell, the preferred_address can be displayed and even modified. There are also good values in the MySQL database. Other API endpoints for users work fine (preferences, addresses, ...) I am observing the following error message in the logs for one specific list: = = = relay=email-smtp.us-east-1.amazonaws.com[35.168.84.210]:587, delay=0.27, delays=0.05/0.04/0.12/0.06, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host email-smtp.us-east-1.amazonaws.com[35.168.84.210] said: 554 Transaction failed: Duplicate header 'DKIM-Signature'. (in reply to end of DATA command)) = = = As I mentioned, this happens for one single list only and this list has not been able to send any email for a week now. After checking mailman-users, I came across the following setting, which seems kind of related to my issue: = = = To distribute messages with valid DKIM signatures, I set remove_dkim_headers: yes in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cf = = = Here are my questions: 1 - I have around 100 lists and this happens for this one list only, so, I am not sure, if the issue might be solved with this change. 2 - Because this happens for this one list only, I would rather change it for this one list only, is there any option available changing it for one list only and not for the whole server? Hi, I have a list set with it's preferred language set as French and the body of the standard notification emails (eg. Welcome message) is correctly sent in French, however the subject of the emails is in English. An archive/read-only list on a full setup?

I have a working full installation of mailman3, postorius and hyperkitty (on Debian 11). Now I wanted to host the archive of a remote list, and I am wondering how to do this properly. After I found no documentation and no posting I simply created a list in mailman3 with only 1 dummy member. The list address is subscribed to the actual remote list. So, messages arrive and are archived. But that's not optimal because hyperkitty thinks it's a normal list where it should be read-only and do not allow subscriptions etc. What's the proper way to set up a hyperkitty-only list? -- -- Andreas :-)

For example: https://mydomain.org/mailman3, https://mydomain.org/admin, https://mydomain.org/archives What's the most straightforward way to put all of these URL paths behind a different context? Debian Package Install - Ownership and Permissions

Hello, I know that installing from Debian packages is not the preferred method - unfortunately that's what I'm stuck with at the moment. I have an installation that is sort of working, but there seems to be a lot of issues relating to ownership and permissions that I'll have to manage by hand, so I am asking for some guidance. I'm seeing an interplay between 'list' (the existing Mailman2 user), www-data (the Apache user) and root. Given that it seems like almost everything that's part of mailman3-web/django/hyperkitty is running in uwsgi, should I maybe change /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini to use 'list' as the uid/gid rather than www-data and then also change any user/group permission to 'list' as well? Unfortunately our mailman-core-container doesn't start anymore correctly. We updated lately to v0.4.5 and it ran smoothly for the last 4 weeks. This morning the RAM crashed and I then had to restore some things since the RAID was affected. Anyway, the container doesn't get up anymore although we didn't change anything in the setup. Does anybody know what the error means and how we could fix that? "Could not acquire the lock" normally means that some permissions aren't right ... right? Actually I don't know where to start. Hi fellow Hyperkitties, I migrated from Mailman 2 to 3 and imported my 1st list via `manage.py hyperkitty_import` to Hyperkitty 1.3.4 (the Debian package), but that might not even be relevant to my problem: All "<" and ">" in old and new messages are shown as "<" and ">" in message views _however_ they are shown correctly in overview abstracts e.g. at //server/mm3/hyperkitty/list/testlist@server/latest Is this a bug in Hyperkitty? Hi. Just come out of a bit of a server reorg where I followed the new instructions to get Mailman3 up and running with Mailman-web. Virtualenv Installation - Mailman Suite 3.3 documentation (list.org)<https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html> In these instructions we are using 2 databases for the Mailman and Django components. I guess it doesn't harm anything to have just one database for both but wondered whether it was a good idea to split eventually? Thanks. Andrew.

Database Schema - v3.2.1 to v3.3.3

Hello. Have 4 Debian servers running Mailman3 v3.2.1 and sharing the same external MySql databases for Mailman3 and Mailman3-web. I am in the process of migrating to v3.3.3. It would be easiest to perform this upgrade one server at a time, but this would mean that for a short time I would have v3.2.1 and v3.3.3 using the same databases. I am wondering if there are any MySql schema differences between the two versions. If there are, having the two different versions 'cohabitating' won't work.. Held messages page not rendering the message

Hi When the list moderator goes to the held_messages page, they correctly get a list of the held messages and can accept/reject/discard them However, clicking on the individual message to read it doesn't work - it does nothing visible at all. From debug I can see it requests /mailman3/postorius/api/list/<list>/held_message/1/ which returns correctly (and the body includes the message as expected) - but it never renders it Any idea what could be wrong? As you could have read yesterday, I had problems upgrading to the last versions of mailman3 related apps. The lmtp runner stopped after upgrade and showed and error in aiosmtpd package. the O.S. version running may servers is FreeBSD 13.1-p7 That was in a mailman3 server with few lists and traffic. O did the upgrade today in the server that has many lists and hard traffic. Delete Django profiles not signed up to a list

Hi, I have noticed recently I have around 2000 bogus sign-ups that have created accounts in Django. Looking through the logs these have come from the Postorius sign-up pages. I checked and email confirmation is required before the accounts are created and the email addresses that have been used do seem like they could respond to these requests. I don't want to add captchas to the form right now but is there any way to clean out these users from the database perhaps periodically based on whether the accounts are subscribed to any list? lmtp runner not starting

This morning I upgraded the mailman3 installation of the less traffic server I have: a bunch of lists, with very slow traffic. (see pip lists at the end) I sent test mails to a pair of lists, but none were distributed or archived. postorius seemed working well. First I thought it was some I did wrong in the upgrade procedure, but then I realized the lmtp runner was not running. I followed old messages about similar problem (many of them in this same mailman-users list), but I cannot see what is wrong. There is no error logged in mailman.log. the mailman.cfg of the lmtp is the default (and was working at least a pair of weeks ago) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* from mailman.cfg [mta] incoming: mailman.mta.postfix.LMTP outgoing: mailman.mta.deliver.deliver lmtp_host: 127.0.0.1 lmtp_port: 8024 smtp_host: localhost smtp_port: 25 configuration: python:mailman.config.postfix *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* There is no one listening in port 8024. Dealing with spam from Web users

We recently migrated a bunch of lists from 2.1 to 3.3.7 and have started to get spammers posting via HyperKitty (because I guess that's easier for them than SMTP). It looks like I should be able to set posts from HyperKitty to be automatically moderated by creating a header filter on "User-Agent" matching "HyperKitty" but is there a better/easier way? Also, for things which already went out to the list, obviously I can ban the spammer but what's the cleanest solution for removing their posts from list archives so that we don't further their goals by continuing to publish their handiwork? -- Jeremy Stanley

Hi All, I need to whitelist a domain for a specific mailing list on your platform. Only *(a)example.com email addresses should be allowed to post messages to this list. Could you please provide me with documentation or instructions on how to achieve this? I have already searched the knowledge base and user manuals without success. I believe it was previously available in mailman2 via Accept_these_nonmembers attribute. But I cannot find this attribute anywhere on postorius. Debian also applies patches that may or may not be backports from more recent versions. We just don't know what's going to go wrong on a distro install. Mailman also has dependencies on several system components (webserver, mailserver, WSGI implementation, SQL database, text indexer) which each come in multiple flavors, but the range of combinations we're familiar with is limited and may not even include the Debian default list. Once you have a working Mailman installation we'll be happy to help you tune it, though. (And you don't need core devs for that anyway, other Mailman site admins who hang out here can often help as well as well as we can.) Sending a message to a subscription applicant when a subscription request is made

Dear Mailman 3 wizards, Our subscription process requires that the applicant answers a few questions and sends them to the list moderator. Not having a template that gets sent on all subscribe requests, I'm using the 'list:admin:action:subscribe' template. This gets sent to the list moderator, who then sends it forward to the applicant. This is rather tedious. I would like the template to be sent directly to the applicant. There is a template, 'list:user:action:subscribe' that almost does this, but it gets sent only if the email address of the applicant is unverified. A good number of our applicants are already on our lists, so they would not get this template if we set the Subscription Policy to 'Confirm, then moderate'. Our Subscription Policy is currently: 'Moderate' for all lists. I figure that three modifications can be used to fix this: a. That we change the lines in the Python program in our installation that send 'list:admin:action:subscribe' to the list admins to instead send the template to the applying subscriber. b. That we change the lines in the Python program in our installation that send 'list:user:action:subscribe' to the subscriber with an unverified address to always do this, even when the incoming address has already been verified. c. That the current 'list:user:action:subscribe' be changed in published Mailman 3 source to 'list:user:action:confirm' and a new template ''list:user:action:subscribe' be set up to be sent when any subscribe request is made. This is more work, of course, so not likely a good thing to hack locally. It could be useful to other users. Any suggestions on how to best and most quickly do the above would be appreciated, starting with (a.) or (b.). Clearly, (a.) and (b.), if we do one of those, are hacks that will need to be applied upon Mailman updates. That's fine by me, as I'm in rush to get this done. I'd welcome pointers as to which file to change and how. Of these two options, which would be the least work? (c.) could be entered as a longer-term enhancement request. 404 on fresh install (Debian11)

Hello, very new to mailman3, I used to manage mailman2 on a Debian 10 server. The server has been upgraded to Debian 11 and mailman2 disappear… I try fresh install of mailman3, prerequisite to data migration, but without success. If some can help, I would be really greatful. Here is my path: - `mailman3-full` install with apt. NGINX reports 502 after fresh install

Hi everyone, Is there a way to enable social signup (vs just login for existing users)? I've just implemented social login on my mailman lists, but realised it seems to be only login, and not signup...or at least I couldn't fine specific info to enable social signup. Is social signup something anyone has implemented (and if so how). If not, I suspect there might be a good reason (e.g. privacy, security, etc) but I'd love to hear it :-) Duane

Mailman 3 database restore unexpected behavior

Mailman3 built from source using virtual environment. Version: GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer) Python 3.9.2 (default, Feb 28 2021, 17:03:44) [GCC 10.2.1 20210110] config file: /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg Issue: I have restored the database number of times recently and experienced that every time after restoration (an hour after) all members getting an email that they are unsubscribed due to bounces, however non of the users are actually unsubscribed from any lists. It looks like there are duplicates in database and all the duplicates are getting unsubscribed? Bounces message: name(a)email.com unsubscribed from [listname] mailing list due to bounces Only restoring two files: mailman3 and mailman3web Did anyone come acroos this behavior ? It is not right that after restoring a database all 1000 user get an email that they are unsubscribed, but they are actually not. I may do something wrong during the restoring process. Please advise me.

Hey there, I wanted to list all nonmembers from a list, I just can't find an easy way to do it. For listing members of a list it is quite clear: mailman members $mylist Is there a similar way for nonmembers!? Actually I'm pretty sure, that one can do it with the shell and I found some documentation on that. But I'm kind of a noob in these things and already tried a little around, but can't get anything to work: dump_members(mlist.nonmembers.members) from https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/model/docs… Help qould be highly appreciated, thanks in advance! Having everyone in our support team logging in using the same Mailman system administrator account is obviously far from good practice. Therefore, as the Mailman system administrator, all support is on my shoulders. Is there any way to create an administrator account for each supporter, so they can support the list administrators with their lists, without having access rights to the full system, as the Mailman list administrator have? Subscription requests = 0 ? Bug or feature?

Even though I have a "Pending confirmation" request, the total entries under the subscription requests reads zero. Subscription Requests

eccentric setup question

Good morning all, we've got a somewhat eccentric setup for our mailman installation, and we're having difficulty getting some of the settings to work properly, so I'm hoping some one has some insight. Our server machine is hidden behind our firewall, with the actual machine name not availble via external DNS) and all the mail is being routed through an Exchange server. So mail to list(a)domain.com hits our exchange server, which sends it on to lists(a)listserver.domain.com The problem we're having is that if the mailman domain of the list is listserver.domain.com then spamfilters start to flag the mail since it looks like spoofing/malformed headers and so on. If the mailman domain is just domain.com then postfix rejects it with an unknown local recipient error. I though I might be able to just tweak the incoming mail headers in postfix via header_checks but that's not working, either because I've got the wrong check or it's the wrong approach, or both. postfix relay_domains might do it, I think, but if it maps listserver.domain.com to domain.com that would break the listserver domain mailing lists (I think). Is there a canonical way to do this and/or have I missed some obvious configuration option in either mailman or postfix? Kind regards, Jeff Berry jeff.berry(a)mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk

Need help setting up mailman3 on ubuntu 20.04...

I'm trying to get mailman3 up on ubuntu using the debian package. I did the "apt install mailman3-full" and it does seem to have installed as both the mailman3 & mailman3-web processes are running. I can use "mailman create" in the command-line and "mailman lists" displays the lists I created. What I am having issues with is I don't see any entries in/etc/aliases, and I don't know how to access the web interface (as either admin or user). Can someone point me to what I need to do to finish it? Thanks, Marisa

IndexError in archiving queue

problem configuring mailman3 on debian bullseye

Hello all, I'm a blind server administrator living in Italy. I use mailman since 2010 and I was very happy for this list manager. When was released the version 3 I started to have many problems to configure it. In this days I installed a new server for my association and I have this problem that I don't know to solve. The server is a debian bullseye. I installed mailman3-full from the standard packege. I'm using nginx as web server. I configured mailman3 and mailman3-web wit https support. All is working fine, but if I attempt to subscribe someone it does not work. I send a subscription e-mail to the address list and I receive correctly the request to confirm subscription. When I reply to the request mailman log gives this error: requests.exceptions.SSLError: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='localhost', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: /postorius/api/templates/list/listname.domain/list:user:notice:welcome (Caused by SSLError(SSLCertVerificationError("hostname 'localhost' doesn't match either of 'example.com', 'www.example.com'"))) The strange thing is that I configured a domain list.example.com and in the configuration files I put this domain. Mailman3-web works fine I can create lists and make settings. Have you an idea about this issue? Change 'from' server for outgoing messages

Hi. I'm running mailman3 on a VPS. The hostname of the VPS is not the hostname that I'm using for mailman3. The webapp is using an Apache Virtual host. I am routing outgoing emails through a third-party smtp relay. The VPS hostname is smart.bnmng.com and the mailing list hostname is 757pug.org Signup confirmation and welcome emails are working. They appear to be coming from the intended host, which is 757pug.org But emails from the mailing lists are being blocked by the smtp relay. MM2 -> MM3 Migration: listinfo page

I have migrated from MM2 to MM3. However, writing HTML is not one of my strengths. I need to edit my MM2 listinfo page to: a. Remove everything below the "Subscribing to LISTNAME" heading and below that add a link to the new http://WEBSERVER/accounts/signup/ which ideally should open on a new browser tab. b. Hello, I've recently installed MM3 with Exim4 on, say, subdomain.myhost.tld and configured MM3 to use lists.someotherdomain.tld as web host and mail host. Thus, the mailman.cfg contains: [mta] smtp_host: lists.someotherdomain.tld When I send a message to test(a)lists.someotherdomain.tld it gets delivered, however the 'From:'-header becomes "test(a)subdomain.myhost.tld".

Attack on Mailman Server?

I had some attacks on my wordpress homepage today, I added some IPs to the blacklist of my firewall. Permissions issue after upgrade of virtualenv

Ola, So I installed a new virtualenv using Python3.11, kept all settings intact, copied /opt/mailman/mmvar from the old virtualenv to the new one. bounce_score_threshold control

Hi guys, I have recently started receiving these mails from the system. First it was frighting me out that people's account got disabled, but actually nothing has happened, nobody got disabled. I however looking to figure out how can I control or change settings for this particular mechanism. Please advise me. emailname(a)example.it's subscription has been disabled on listname(a)domain.eu due to their bounce score exceeding the mailing list's bounce_score_threshold. Regards, Tibor

Question about the smtp log (rotation)

I have been asked to take over the management of the mailman3 servers as the prior admin left little documentation. One of the first things I need to do is optimize the logging. Currently the mailman.log is being rotated and zipped by user list and kept 5 day. (this is fine but would like to increase it some) But the smtp log has not been rotated since August (also created by user list) I cannot seem to find what process does this and how I can modify it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Archiver Hyperkitty Not Found

Hello, I upgraded from Debian 10 to 11 today, and hyperkitty archiver stopped working. From the mailman.log: AssertionError: Archiver not found: hyperkitty I followed along on a related thread: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… I don't see any resolution to that thread. The only thing that worked for me was removing the hyperkitty rows from the listarchiver table in the database. Hi, I’ve clearly got something wrong in my configuration, but I can’t work out what. All my URLs seem to have the “mailman3” part duplicated, i.e. Https://example.com/mailman3/mailman3/lists Is where I have to go to get a list of my mailing lists, which just doesn’t seem right. In my settings.py file I have: POSTORIUS_TEMPLATE_BASE_URL = 'https://example.com/mailman3/' If I change the value of this to just https://example.com/ it doesn’t change this, Where have I gone wrong? Hi! The error above occurs when starting mailman. The xxxx shows a part from the database section of mailman.cfg. I followed the tutorial https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Howto_Install_Mailman3_On_Debian10. But since django and postgres changed some things, I had to fix some files of mailman3 to get it working. Postfix problem with imported Mailman2 list

I installed and tested Mailman3. I imported a Mailman2 list. All looks good but I get this error. Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table; from=<hit(a)options.org> to=<atm(a)alist.net> The aliases seem to show up find in the GUI for the control panel software I use. Postfix virual file has a mapping of atm to atm(a)alist.net . It seems mailman at least sees the connection. Messages not picking up header or footer template

Hi I can't figure out how to get headers or footers on my messages Example: I create a footer in Postorius. The name in the form is '[list:member:regular:footer] - The footer for a regular (non-digest) message.' The data is 'Test Footer' I can see the entry in the database with the uri: http://localhost:8000/mailman3/api/templates/list/testing.comms.sdcvirginia… I can do a wget on that uri and download a copy of the footer, and it looks right But when I send a message to the list and the message is forwarded, the footer isn't on the messages that members receive Looking at mailman.log, I cannot see any attempt to access the footer. I can see connections to the REST API (config, roster/owner, roster/moderator) that correspond to the time I sent the message So what am I doing wrong? Thank you Ben

Error downloading CSV for 1,300 members

Multi-domain oddities in Hyperkitty and Postorius

In the OpenDev Collaboratory we've got a bunch of separate Mailman 2.1 vhosts we've started migrating into a single Mailman 3.3.7 server, desiring to take full advantage of its improved multi-domain support. For the most part everything is working great (kudos to everyone who maintains the software and documentation, it's excellent). One of the things our users noticed fairly quickly was Hyperkitty on the second vhost was incorrectly showing the FQDN of the first vhost near the top of its pages. This is covered in the FAQ of course, and seems to imply that what we want is to switch the SITE_ID from 1 to 0 in our settings.py in order to take advantage of magic domain-guessing behavior. So far so good. Unfortunately, SITE_ID = 0 seems to explicitly require the addition of "mail hosts" (or "mail domains" from Django's perspective), and all the web routing returns error pages for any list sites besides the first one since, by default, our server did not have these predefined. What's odd is that, if I log into Postorius as admin and visit the "manage domains" page, suddenly the database gets populated with mail hosts for all of the FQDNs associated with our imported mailing lists. I would not have expected merely visiting that page as an admin to have a side effect of adding entries for the "missing" mail hosts, is that an intentional behavior or merely a bug? Once these entries are automatically added by visiting that page, they're all associated with the one "web host" ("site" in Django) we have for the server, and now the list filtering functionality in Postorius breaks and any of the vhosts all display the full set of mailing lists on the server rather than only those associated with a particular vhost (note that this seems to only be confusing Postorius, Hyperkitty has them correctly filtered still). Okay, so it looks like this is because the mail hosts are all tied to the one web host. We can create additional "sites" in the Django admin UI and then switch the association of the mail hosts to those distinct web hosts. But after doing so, the first vhost still seems to show an unfiltered list of all lists in Postorius (Hyperkitty continues to be fine), while Postorius on the other vhosts correctly shows their filtered sets of lists instead. I also noticed when mailman-web is starting up, its log claims the first site is being set as the "default domain," so have to wonder if that's related to this behavior. Should we create an extra web host to serve as the "default" so that all our typical vhosts get the expected list filtering behavior, or am I completely off-base and there's a much better approach I've missed? Sorry this is so long, I feel like I have at most a tenuous grasp of the details and variables involved, but hopefully it makes sense to someone. Multiple domain problem

Hi, list! I have lists on two domains, example1.com and example2.com. The mail interface works perfectly. However, connecting a browser to example1.com, I get the title List index - example1.com, and the web interface seems to work fine. If I connect to example2.com, the title is example2.com, without the preceding List index. And the body says Page not found. I can't find anything in the logs that tells me the reason. Installed but mailman reports missing hyperkitty module

I've opted for the Mailman3 package installation on Ubuntu 22 LTS on top of a manually installed Mailman3 core package from the Ubuntu 20 Debian repository. Everything is working great on my installation. However, if I try to enable hyperkitty in /etc/mailman.cfg postorius reports 500 status codes on all pages. /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log reports this error: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'mailman3_hyperkitty' Any idea why postorius can't seem to find the installed hyperkitty module? Does mailman-web do sanity checks in settings.py? Confirm subscription via URL?

Dear all, in Mailman2, the email that is sent out to the subscriber for them to confirm their subscription contained a clickable URL. In mailman 3, the default templace for this action doesn't have this option. Is the functionality still there but has to be added to the template? If so, what is the scheme? Thanks! Johannes

changeaddress command and nonmembers

I recently upgraded a Mailman 2 installation (which included a number of email lists) to Mailman 3.3.3. There is one human user who in the past has used two different email addresses. Let's call them oldaddress(a)hotmail.com and newaddress(a)gmail.com. This person used to participate on an email list using oldaddress(a)hotmail.com (both posting and receiving). He then unsubscribed oldaddress(a)hotmail.com from the list and then subscribed to the email list as newaddress(a)gmail.com. All of this happened while using Mailman 2. Now that we're on Mailman 3 and the email list was migrated from MM2 to MM3, we see that newaddress(a)gmail.com is a Member of the list, and we see that oldaddress(a)hotmail.com is a NonMember of the list. That all makes sense. But now, this person has decided that they actually want to go back to using the old address. So I ran the command "mailman changeaddress newaddress(a)gmail.com oldaddress(a)hotmail.com". But that gave me this output: Usage: mailman changeaddress [OPTIONS] OLD_ADDRESS NEW_ADDRESS Try 'mailman changeaddress -h' for help. Error: Address oldaddress(a)hotmail.com already exists; can't change. Can anyone explain how I can do what I'm trying to accomplish? (Also, why is this error displaying the usage message? That seems odd, since the number and type of arguments was correct.)

Improve logging?

Some entries in the log files can be very scary, while in actual sense they are harmless. Such inconsequential, but scary entiess can mess up the well-being of a SysAdmin. MM3 to MM3 migration

I’m looking to migrate several mailing lists from one server running MM3/Django/Hyperkitty to another. Same operating system and python environment and venvs for both. Although the canonical hostnames for the two servers will differ, I can use the same hostnames for lists once I’ve got everything set up. Is this really as simple as building the new server, creating the same lists on the new server, and rsync’ing the archives from the old server? If not, how to do the migration? I checked the archives and saw many threads on MM2 -> MM3, but did not see anything on MM3 migration. Thanks in advance. dn

Must every Moderator/Admin be member of a list to be able to use Postorius?

we're using debian/devuan with distribution-mailman3 and tried to add admin/mod for a list, but if logging in as this user, there's no item to manage the list at all. do we have to add this user as member of this list? (that wouldn't be nice, because the user doesn't want to get normal Mails from List, but only admin-Mails) regards omf

New Installation of MM3 is not archiving

Greetings, I finally completed installation of Mailman 3 following the instructions here: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#initial-configu… I got a lot of support from this mailing-list too and I am mighty grateful for that. My new MM3 instance does not seem to be archiving. List subscribers are currently sending and receiving mails on their subscribed lists. However, none of the correspondence is showing up at https://mailing-list-site.tld/archives/. That page shows a listing of the active mailing-lists with '0 participants' and '0 discussions'. Whereas, those lists contain mails. How do I troubleshoot this?

About to Install MM3 -- Seeking clarification

Good Morning Everyone, I installed and managed mailman 2 for about two years. I am now ready to try Mailman 3. The documentation for version 2 was lucid and this forum was quite helpful in the past. Now I'd like to proceed with installating MM3 but I doubt my understanding of the docs. It seems to assume that users will know what to do. Okay, don't laugh! I just want to be sure what I am doing. Does the following sequence resemble the proper steps? 1. Download the source from a git repo (I understood that one) 2. Create a virtual environment (venv perhaps ... not stated explicitly) 3. activate the virtual environment 4. from the git project root, run: ./mailman start I know, its stupid. I had to ask. It would really build my confidence someone would confirm the above steps or counter then with something very explicit. What about process ownership? Do I need to have a unix mailman user? What else do I need to get mailman up and running before proceeding to configuration. Ahaa! I perused the config docs a bit. Where can I find the .cfg file? Hello, Please pardon a slightly off-topic comment, but I would like to highlight a part of Odhiambo's post. Heavily nested inline replies also reflect the issue I wish to comment on, so I'm not going to. Granted, I am a slow learner, and perhaps already so mixed up after reading > the myriad HOWTOs for > installing MM3 that are available online. The docs for their equivalent of the kernel syscall interface, when printed (two-sided) and stacked, would easily approach 2 meters tall. Yet, every bit of it was incomprehensible unless and until you called the developer and had them explain it to you. The problem that we all have, us humans, is that when we are very familiar with something, like the code we've been working on, it is very hard to describe its purpose to somebody who knows nothing about it. ("It's obvious to me, so it should be obvious to you."). So, a challenge for us all: When writing and reviewing your documentation, imagine that you're explaining your whole project face-to-face to your grandmother, or to anybody who never learned to program. From experience I promise that it's easy once you get the hang of it. EMWD/Affinity/Empathy in 2023

Hi all, We're exploring Mailman 3 and the custom interfaces provided by EMWD's Affinity and Empathy look very interesting: https://www.mailmanhost.com/affinity-mailman/ However, I saw reports of EMWD being a one-man show and the owner sadly passing away in 2021; but I've also seen threads here referring to the Affinity and Empathy projects in 2022. It wasn't clear to me if EMWD is still an active business and Affinity and Empathy are still active offerings. Does anyone here have any direct contact/relationship/experience with EMWD/Affinity/Empathy following the owner's passing? Or knowledge of any other offerings publicly available today that are similar to Affinity/Empathy? Thanks!

Hi everybody, I've a new installation in my own vps. Everything works if I set "Deliver immediately" but if I turn on the "hold for moderation" I can't see the mails in web interface and I can't confirm the delivery or discard. What information do you need to help me?

Dear Users & Developers, we're running MM3 on Ubuntu 22 and used the venv-installation method. Last week we updated via¹ to Mailman Core-Version GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer) Mailman Core API-Version 3.1 Mailman Core Python-Version 3.10.6 (main, Nov 14 2022, 16:10:14) [GCC 11.3.0] and now mailman attaches mime-attachments to email as text-files. That breaks many mails in our environment. For example: Now we have attachments like smime.p7s + ATT000001.txt as well as what looks like MM footers "mailing list --- test@domain ... To unsubscripbe send an email to ..." How can we get the "old" processing back? Thank you alot. Stefan

Localisation of web interface gone after OS upgrade

Dear all, I just upgraded our server from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04. Mailman is installed in virtualenv, so it shouldn't be affected by the upgrade. Am I right about that? However, the strange thing is that most, albeit not all of the localisation is gone, the web interface is now mostly in English. Still, I reinstalled venv, mailman and hyperkitty, but no change. I also re-ran the four commands * mailman-web migrate * mailman-web collectstatic * mailman-web compress * mailman-web compilemessages just to be sure, but that didn't change things either. Is there something in Ubuntu 22.04 that kills the localisation? Thanks! Johannes

Mailman 2.1 has a cleanarch script for checking mbox files for unescaped `From `lines in message bodies and optionally fixing them. For some time, there has been a stand-alone python3 version of this script at https://www.msapiro.net/scripts/cleanarch3 (mirrored at https://fog.ccsf.edu/~msapiro/scripts/cleanarch3). I have just updated this script to check and optionally fix bad Date: headers. Hi, Smtp2Go relay service enforces a few rules for deliverability: The From: address domain has to be verified in smtp2go The sender envelope address also has to be verified in smtp2go So emails sent by mailman don't get relayed because mailman sets From: to be the original sender of the message, and it means anyone that wants to send to the list would have to approve themselves with smtp2go first, which is not workable. To make it work, I would have to have something like: Sender: bounce-address(a)lists.mailman3.org - untouched From: original.sender@gmail.com@lists.mailman3.org - change #1 having the From address to be From the list Reply-To: original.sender(a)gmail.com - change #2 - if someone replies Then smtp2go will send the email. I looked in the settings and I didn't find a readily available option to do that. I'm new to customizing mailman3 , but have been using it in production for a little more than 1 year. I've seen other software do the solution proposed above, namely DIvi contact forms set the "From" to be something @website.com and the Reply-To: as the form submitter. I am told that the standards is moving away from forging the DATA From: that doesn't have a predictable domain, and instead put the variable email address in Reply-To, for things like contact forms or automated sending. Can someone guide me on where I could start looking?

mailman-web causing constant 100% cpu load of mysqld

Dear all, with mailmanweb running, the CPU load of mysqld constantly hovers around 100% In /var/log/mysql/errors.log I see repeatedly: 2023-01-13 17:22:42 27198 [Warning] Aborted connection 27198 to db: 'mailman_core' user: 'mailman' host: 'localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets) 2023-01-13 17:27:43 29621 [Warning] Aborted connection 29621 to db: 'mailman_core' user: 'mailman' host: 'localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets) This also seems to affect other services such as dovecot which rely on mysql and at times can't connect to it. Error Logging - what changed with the New Year releases?

Apart from all the defaults in settings.py (derived from gitlab), I also have this line: LOGGING['handlers']['file']['filename'] = '/opt/mailman/mm/var/logs/mailmanweb.log' Before the New Year releases of MM3, I used to get errors written to this file. Not anymore after I updated to the New Year releases. Another thing that I have realized is that prior to the New Year releases, I would get an error logged to that file and also mailed to me. I don't think that I have changed anything in settings,py related to logging. I have been trying to get signup with Twitter working. This used to generate an error that was both logged and emailed, but that isn't happening anymore. I have enabled other social auth providers (in settings.py) which I haven't configured in the admin panel. I expect that tying to use these on Postorius would generate an error that is logged and mailed to admin, but that too is not happening. Moderation request reminders

Hi all, I and my moderators are getting daily moderation request reminders. Is there a way to set them to be weekly instead? I looked around in the UI for it but did not see it. It started with my latest server upgrade. As list owner I get 50+ of these messages every morning and my modertors each get only one, but don't like it. I still don't see a link for my moderators to see the membership lists even though the lists are set to allow it. Is that among the planned bug fixes? Yours, Allan

Cross-List and Domain based sender whitelisting ( accept_these_nonmembers )

Hi everyone, one of our servers that was running a mailman2 instance just crashed this afternoon, so we decided to take the leap and migrate to 3, and I have to say it worked pretty well, the lists seem to be back. What I can't seem to find is the option to whitelist senders based on a domain AND on membership on a different list. The lists are operated for a smallish university and all the professors need to be allowed to send to the students list, without being member of that list. That was possible with mailman2 by just whitelisting the university domain. Also, in the past we allowed all members of the all-students list to post to any of the dorm-lists (this is mainly used for party announcements so it is not a must have), but I wanted to ask anyways, if there was a chance to allow this feature again. According to the docs, the accept_these_nonmembers option exists (https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…), but none of my lists have that set after the migration - the field is not even there when accessing the REST API. Do I need to enable something? Has that feature been added just recently, and we are missing out (since we are using the apt packages from ubuntu)? Thanks in advance, Patrick

mailman.log file owned by 'list' user

I'm on Debian 11, trying to troubleshoot an installation of Mailman 3.3.3 that was done by someone else. Mailman is running as a non-privileged (non-root) user called 'xyz'. On the day that Mailman was installed, that non-privileged 'xyz' user was able to execute mailman commands successfully to create, view and modify lists. A couple of days later, when the 'xyz' user tried running those same mailman commands, they failed with this error: PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/mailman3/mailman.log' Doing "ls -l" on the file /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log showed this: -rw-r----- 1 list list 0 Jan 6 00:00 /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log When I did a 'ps' command, I saw that all of the mailman processes are running as user 'xyz'. No processes were running as the user 'list'. It seems that some process is rotating the mailman.log file at midnight, and the newly-created mailman.log is being owned by user 'list'. Can anyone explain why this is happening, and how to fix it?

SPF check fails for lists subdomain

After spending 20 years running a non-profit that hosted email lists for local communities as my day job, that's now all volunteer as I run a startup. Figuring out how to raise money to cover server costs without selling out our members with targeted social media advertising, was a continuous challenge. Anyway, today I am still involved in efforts to route around digital ad behemoths, but I a trying to help small businesses and shop for good brands gain new customers. So here is the question - do you think a Mailman add-on/plugin/module/whatever you'd call it that allowed list admins to reward their new subscribers to email lists with custom themed "for good" discounts would be of interest to many??? Normally, we (GoodCarts) reward people post-checkout with discounts in reciprocity powered circles of online stores. Stores essentially grow together by sharing customers instead of bidding against each other. The way I could see working with email list providers is basically adding an affiliate marketing style commission where purchases with post-subscription rewards would go to the partner based on results. When we go from hundreds of brand members to thousands and add in a "buy local" or brands by theme/values/impact, in theory my non-profits local online community forums could mission align by offering discounts to locally owned businesses. Our view is that exclusive discounts as rewards post transaction (purchase, email list subscription, volunteer sign-up, event registration, online petition signature, etc.) is far better than plastering ads everywhere. Anyway, I'd be curious if you think idea might have legs with Mailman list hosts/admins??? Nothing urgent, just a Saturday morning think different idea. Steven Clift

Footer broken after migration. Where can I fix it?

Dear all, after importing the lists from mailman2, almost everything works great, but the footer templates appear broken. Mails sent out contain the line %(web_page_url)slistinfo/%(_internal_name)s So clearly the old templates are not getting explanded. However, when I look in the web interface unter "templates", there is nothing there. Where are these legacy footers stored? In the DB, the table "postorius_emailtemplate" is empty. Thanks! Johannes

Docker or virtualenv?

Dear all, I have noticed that Ubuntu's current LTS no longer contains packages for mailman2 and its mailman3 packages are incomplete. So, prior to upgrading the server, I will have to migrate from mailman2 / distro packages to mailman3 installed either in virtualenv or docker. I have got zero experience with virtualenv and some experience with Docker. Overall, the docker method looks easier. Is docker the default method by now? Thanks! Johannes
