I do have a project beginning to move to Ubuntu 20.04 eventually. For now, I'm struggling to find the resolution to this error. I've looked at the site here, did a rebuild on the whoosh index, I've found and tested the suggestions to add a localhost non-https in apache for HyperKitty, I've edited HyperKitty to be https rather than HTTP, none of these settings / changes seem to resolve the issue. Oddly for all intents and purposes, the server appears to run fine, the archive might be a bit slow but it doesn't seem to have issues other than the constant errors coming into the admin emails. Happy to post any configs or detail anything, appreciate any replies. Respectfully,

mm3 floods syslog

Dear friends, I got another problem: mailman floods my syslog. I deleted a domain/webdomain (further mentioned as deleted.org) in postorius, django web. No entries are now in /var/lib/mailman3/data/postfix_domains or postfix_lmtp or /var/lib/mailman3/lists. mailman3 postorius cannot retrieve template at ... (<no authorization>)

Hello, the question is: postgres - mailman3web-postorius_emailtemplate table vs mailman3 - templates table I installed a brand new mailman3 with mailman Core 3.3.3, Api 3.1, Core Python 3.9.2 postgres12 nginx on debian bullseye. I created a template via postorius -> lists -> (testliste01) -> templates -> new template -> [list:member:regular:footer] and [list:member:digest:footer] They are shown in the postgres database mailman3 table templates: id name context uri username password 14 list:member:digest:footer testliste01.mydomain.de http://localhost/postorius/api/templates/list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:m ember:digest:footer 15 list:member:regular:footer testliste01.mydomain.de http://localhost/postorius/api/templates/list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:m ember:regular:footer First there where no templates in the /var/lib/mailman3/templates folder, which was empty after installation. Later I created in /var/lib/mailman3/templates theses folders and the files /list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:member:digest:footer + list:member:regular:footer owned by list:list 644 A testmail went through but instead of the default footer no footer was shown. In the sys.log I found the following error message: Oct 29 11:28:04 myserver mailman3[33015]: Message: 'Cannot retrieve template at http://localhost/postorius/api/templates/list/testliste01.mydomain.de/list:m ember:regular:footer (<no authorization>)' How can I solve this problem? What kind of authorisation is meant? list? restadmin? I read in https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/config-core.html#configure-templates ... list specific templates invar/templates/lists/LIST-ID/LC/ ... I guess the LC means Language Code. But in the database table templates no LC subdirectory is mentioned (in my case must be de). And I read (dont know where) .... The templates created in Postorius are created in the postorius_emailtemplate table in Mailman's database and referenced via URLs like 'https://example.com/mailman3/api/templates/list/<list-id>/<template-name>'. I.e., they are not stored in the file system. ... That's true. I found in postgres database mailman3web in the table mailman3web postorius_emailtemplate my id name data language created_at modified_at context identifier 15 list:member:digest:footer postorius footer digest 1x linefeed 2021-10-29 11:17:40.664689+02 2021-10-29 11:26:48.692628+02 list testliste01.mydomain.de 16 list:member:regular:footer postorius footer non-digest 1x linefeed 2021-10-29 11:18:29.166241+02 2021-10-29 11:27:24.519024+02 list testliste01.mydomain.de But my question is how to integrate this into the mailman3-system. Unable to get mailman3 working on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Hi all, after upgrading an older server to Ubuntu 20.04, I tried to first upgrade my old mailman 2 installation to mailman 3. I've been on it for three weeks now, but unable to get anything working. I have long forgone the idea of upgrading and thus purged everything from mailman2 on my machine, and installed and removed mailman3 several times to no avail. My most recent try (it is currently an empty mailman installation) was done by calling apt install mailman3 mailman3-full mailman3-web and saying "yes" to every question. I'm using Mariadb as the database, and two databases called mailman3 and mailman3web (plus two users with the same names) have been created. I have configured a virtual host for apache (see below) and changed the mailman.cfg and mailman-weg.cfg to match (also see below). I have restarted both mailman3 and mailman3-web several times now, but when I try to access the site, I just get | Something went wrong | Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. plus an e-mail with subject | [Django] ERROR (EXTERNAL IP): Service Unavailable: /mailman3/postorius/lists/ I'm running | GNU Mailman 3.3.3b1 (Tom Sawyer) | Python 3.8.10 (default, Sep 28 2021, 16:10:42) Can anybody tell me what is going on? Also, the confirmation e-mail I got for registering a user says "example.com" in its subject line, even though I replaced every mention in the config files below with my actual URL. Internal server errors after upgrade

Hello community, I'm running the Docker version of MM3. I've just run: docker-compose stop docker-compose pull docker-compose up -d I am now at versions: mailman-core: 3.3.4 mailman-web: 2.2.20 I am running a 2-core, 4GB RAM VM on Linode. The web interface mostly works. However, sometimes/regularly I get a 500 Internal Server Error. In /opt/mailman/core/var/logs/mailman.log I see the errors, but they are usually different. The common thread seems they are always about some sort of database call. Reloading the page is usually successful. Did anything change with the latest upgrade in terms of database timeouts? Before this upgrade, I was never getting it. (htop does not show anything unusual.) Any leads? Thank you, Seth

Upgrade commands under Docker

Another docker upgrade question... according to the upgrade docs https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/upgrade-3.2.html#post-upgrade you are supposed to stop the web service and run a series of commands (compress/collectstatic/etc). How do you stop the service under Docker? If I stop the container, then I cannot access the manage.py command. Thanks, Seth

How to change rest APi password

This is probably s stupid question but I have been searching for an answer. How do you set a different rest api password? The instructions say : The credentials are set in the [webservice] section of the configuration using the admin_user and admin_pass properties. But what is that referring to? I am running docker, so is this in the docker.yaml file (I tried it there it did not work) or in the Django config file or someplace else?

list admin via email

I'm unclear on how to approve via email a message sent to a list. As list owner you receive a 'requires approval' email. It then says: "If you reply to this message, keeping the Subject: header intact, Mailman will discard the held message. Do this if the message is spam. If you reply to this message and include an Approved: header with the list password in it, the message will be approved for posting to the list. The Approved: header can also appear in the first line of the body of the reply." Question: if I want to approve the message, where do I "...include an Approved: header with the list password in it" ? TY!

Mailman import of 2000 lists

I'm working on importing nearly 2000 lists and have been doing some testing prior to migrating from Mailman2. I'm using the mailman create command via for loop. It takes quite a while to do all the work including updating MySQL and re-generating the LMTP files for each list. As the number of lists increases the process gets slower. Do you have any recommendations for speeding up this process? I am running the system in AWS using EFS for storage of the LMTP files. Thanks! -- Dan Caballero Caltech

After accessing the web-interface via https://my.mailinglistserver.local/mailman3/postorius/lists/ I receive Not Found: /mailman//postorius/lists/ [pid: 1346851|app: 0|req: 4/4] 10.254.253.12 () {70 vars in 1369 bytes} [Mon Oct 25 10:39:59 2021] GET /mailman3/postorius/lists/ => generated 2821 bytes in 12 msecs (HTTP/1.1 404) 5 headers in 155 bytes (1 switches on core 1) Where does the wrong path come from (mailman vs. mailman3) After enabling Debug, i see in the browser the following: Page not found (404) Request Method: GET Request URL: https://my.mailinglistserver.local/mailman//postorius/lists/ Using the URLconf defined in urls, Django tried these URL patterns, in this order: ^$ ^postorius/ ^hyperkitty/ ^user-profile/delete$ [name='mm_user_account_delete'] ^user-profile/$ [name='mm_user_profile'] ^accounts/ ^admin/ The current path, /postorius/lists/, didn't match any of these. equivalent mailman 3 commands from 2.0

For my 2.0 environment, I have scripts to dump list info, but i can't find the equivalent in mailman 3, for some commands, for example I use: /usr/lib/mailman/bin/list_lists which equates in mailman3 to "mailman lists" /usr/lib/mailman/bin/list_members which equates in mailman3 to "mailman members [listname]" But I also use /usr/lib/mailman/bin/list_admins [listname] /usr/lib/mailman/bin/config_list [listname] Are there equivalent command line commands to get this info in mailman3? The mailman3 "mailman withlist [listname]" takes me into an interactive prompt not sure where to go from there. I can use the API curl --user [ADMIN]:[password] http://[IP]]/3.1/lists/[listname]/config | python3 -m json.tool But just curious if there is a command line equivalent like in mailman2?

Mailman and Exim 4.94.2 (Debian Bullseye)

Hi. I moved Mailman instance to a machine running Debian Bullseye last week. Ran into an issue with the Exim transport from this doc: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/docs/mta.h… The issue I ran into was that Exim wasn't able to resolve localhost in order to connect to the LMTP listener. I changed VPS provider at the same time (moved from Bytemark to Gandi) so not sure if they were doing anything different with DNS, but by default Exim doesn't use standard libraries to lookup hosts: https://www.exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch-the_dnslookup_… I solved the issue by using the following configuration on the Mailman router: # /etc/exim4/conf.d/transport/55_mm3_transport mailman3_transport: driver = smtp protocol = lmtp allow_localhost gethostbyname hosts = localhost port = MM3_LMTP_PORT rcpt_include_affixes = true I haven't defined the lmtp settings at all in mailman.cfg meaning they are using the default settings of 127.0.0.1:8024. Is this the best modification to make to the Exim config or should I go an alternative route? Thanks. Andrew.

Hi everybody, as per subject, I'm getting this error in the hyperkitty log when mailman daemon tries to archive a mail. I've setup the hyperkitty.cfg file with api_key = MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY in settings_local.py but still nothing. I've seen here and in GitLab issues some errors concerning a wrong api key but here it says that it wasn't sent at all. All packages installed via pip install + latest .zip release, including mailman-hyperkitty. Currently running on apache with mod_wsgi_py3 without https. Any clue? All the best, Marco Marinello

I'm getting (many) uncaught bounce messages for one user. Other than forcibly unsubscribing them, is there anything I can do? I hesitate to post this message publically, but here is what I can see, somewhat anonymized The MIME structure looks like └┬╴multipart/mixed 7030 bytes ├─╴text/plain 442 bytes ├─╴message/delivery-status 176 bytes └─╴text/rfc822-headers 5301 bytes In /var/log/mailman3/bounce.log I see lines like Oct 23 08:20:00 2021 (5320) Bounce message w/no discernable addresses: <hex-digits(a)foo.bar> In the delivery-status part I see Final-Recipient: rfc822; fub(a)foo.bar Action: delayed Status: 4.0.0 The initial text/plain part looks like Hi! This is the MAILER-DAEMON, please DO NOT REPLY to this email. A message is delayed for more than 4 hours for the following list of recipients: fub(a)foo.bar: Network error on destination MXs Please note that this is only a temporary failure report. The message is kept in the queue for up to 7 days. You DO NOT NEED to re-send the message to these recipients. Below is a copy of the original message:

installing a new instance of mm3

I'm getting nowhere with diagnostics and troubleshooting (which was easier with mailman 2). I'm considering a new install, hence the question. Thanks!

I've encountered an issue where Mailman3 is looking for an older jquery package after updating HyperKitty to 1.3.5. I found the error below via Firefox developer tools. Postorius web issues after upgrading mailman 3

Hello, I hope someone could help me in relation to this issue. I have experienced some error with my mailman3 deployment (only in postorius web) after went through the upgrading procedure following https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/upgrade-3.2.html#upgrading-mailman-3 I believe this is nothing else then the wrong css/js files gone to the wrong directory or they aren't implemented properly. Basically some part of it works ok and some doesn't. The following web pages doesn't seem to be implementing the css/js files is Archives, Account, Posting Activity, Log in and Log out web pages. API privileges question for mailman3

In mailman3 documentation it says: "Because the REST server has full administrative access, it should never be exposed to the public internet. By default it only listens to connections on localhost." So I just wanted to confirm there is no way to limit API access? For example I have a group that wants to use API access to mange their mail lists, but from what I can gather, if I give them access to the API they would have access to ALL the mail lists etc.. I would suspect this is even true if I give them their own domain? Is there anyway to limit access via the API to certain lists etc.....

I'm posting here first (rather than submitting a bug report on GitLab) because I'm not sure if I've overlooked a configuration setting. We're running the latest versions of the various Mailman 3 packages on Ubuntu 20.04, using Postfix as the MTA. Mailman 3 has been configured to apply DMARC mitigation unconditionally, replacing From: with the list address. The situation we're seeing is that if person A sends an email from a Google account to Mailman 3 and receives the (modified) post back from Mailman 3, the message ID is not being changed. Google's behaviour then is not to show that message to the user because it thinks it is the same message that the user sent out. Since Mailman 3 is modifying the message, it ought to have a different message ID. Is that a configuration setting I've missed or a bug, please? Thank you. Regards Philip

Folks, I needed to migrate my previously-sqlite based mailman core to mariadb, and have more or less managed it, though I feel certain the table schema I ended up with is not what mailman would have created for itself. Is there any way to get a copy of the mysql/mariadb table schema that I can then pour the existing data into (i.e. I don't want to reinitialise the db)? Trying to set up mailman3 on my mail server

I'm having a lot of trouble with trying to set up mailman3 on my mail server. It's on an AWS instance, running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. All software is installed from Ubuntu packages. Mailman version is 3.2.2. The problem I am trying to troubleshoot first is how this can be happening: Oct 14 11:27:26 2021 (2341) ACCEPT: <f36e1ed0-9d25-b661-9c94-4ce999f6d5fd(a)elyograg.org> Oct 14 11:27:27 2021 (2344) Cannot connect to SMTP server 127.0.0.1 on port 25 From the shell, I can "telnet localhost 25" successfully, even as the "list" user. Apparmor is disabled. The UFW firewall is enabled, which allows all traffic on the loopback interface. I disabled ipv6 at the kernel level, but had the same problem with ipv6 enabled, so I don't think ipv6 is related at all. I do not see any connections in the postfix log that correspond to the mailman connection error. From a fresh install of mailman, I created two mailing lists. Once upon a time I had those lists active on a Debian 6 machine running mailman 2.1.13 ... I copied the mailing list config from that machine over and used the "import21" facility to import the configuration into the new mailman3 install. That worked without error and I can see the lists and their members with the "mailman" command. I found instructions for integration with postfix, and added the required three config lines to the postfix config. When I try to send a message to the list, I get what I pasted above in the mailman log. I think that means the postfix integration is working, and is forwarding to mailman. I'm hoping somebody can give me some pointers, and if more information is needed for troubleshooting, let me know what is needed. I'm also having trouble with the web UI ... I thought I had found what to do with Apache, but it's having problems and I do not know what to do so it works. The UI is not super important right now, I'd like to get the lists working first. I first tried to get help on the IRC channel, but that appears to be a dead end. I did give it several hours. Thanks, Shawn

Hello, I'm in the process of migrating some of the lists from mailman2 to mailman3. I'm getting the below error message when I migrate a particular list. *2%Failed adding message <mailman.2.1593699619.32248>: 'ascii' codec can't encode character '\ufffd' in position 252: ordinal not in range(128).* I ran the check_hk_import script before migrating and it was not giving any error. Trying to get mailman3 in docker working with external Mysql database

Our database group has created the database with (charset=utf8mb4&use_unicode=1) and a user For my docker-compose.yaml I will only have two container sections mailman-core mailman-web which should have these database variables set under each: -DATABASE_URL=mysql+pymysql://[database_user]:[database_password]@[database.server.ip]:[databseport]/[database_name] - DATABASE_TYPE=mysql - DATABASE_CLASS=mailman.database.mysql.MySQLDatabase Are these all correct? in looking at documentation should it be: DATABASE_URL=mysql+pymysql://[database_user]:[database_password]@[database.server.ip]:[databseport]/[database_name]?charset=utf8mb4&use_unicode=1 Or/and should I also use? Installing mailman3 with Debian methods was straightforward, and worked out of the box. Though it purged my mailman2 installation without warning, that was a hard blow. Had to reinstall all my lists in a night session. Also lost the old archives and can't get the new get running.

Broken web interface Ubuntu 20.04

Hello, Whilst I wasn't looking something has broken the web interface to mailman on our list server. On the list index page I get the Postorius header, but no list index, instead a Page not found error. Curiously the Postorius header is also broken, the links point to https://host/mailman/(postorius/lists|hyperkitty) not https://host/mailman3/(postorius/lists|hyperkitty) like it should I've poked around and I can't find any useful errors and I don't know exactly when this happened, but I think it was this week. Mailman itself is running happily underneath. Any suggestions as to what might have gone wrong? Simon P.S. Upgrading mailman 3 venv installation

Congratulations on the new release for Mailman 3 Core! I'm not a daily pip/python user, so I'm probably behind on the safe and proper way to update my installation (which is working pretty well). In my virtual environment, I ran `pip list -o` and got a significant list. I noticed that all of the mailman packages seemed to be "Type sdist" and the framework packages "Type wheel". (Dunno what "Type" means in this context.) Hello Everyone, I am pleased to announce that Mailman Core 3.3.5b1 is now out. It is a pre-release for 3.3.5, which is slated to come out in 3 weeks from now. I am planning for a 2 week beta period, after which I'll release the first RC and then stable a week after. Right now I am not planning to release a second beta version, but if there are several changes in Core in the next week or so, then I might. This release includes a lot of bug fixes and some new features. It also includes a security enhancement that improves the authentication of REST API by adding resistance to some timing channel attacks. A full list of changes in this version can be found here[1]. Hello crew, Installing Mailam3 on FreeBSD. In mailman.cgf, I have set: var_dir: /usr/local/mailman/var When I ran "mailman -C mailman.cgf info" it created the necessary directory tree. DKIM and ARC - *anyone* got this working?

Has anyone using Mailman 3 successfully got DKIM *and* ARC working? I don't mind which MTA you are using or which add-ons you are using to provide the support for DKIM and ARC. I'm just trying to see if there is actually anyone that has both pieces working. By working, I mean sending an email to a Mailman 3 list and receiving the email back from Mailman 3 and the receiving MTA confirms that both DKIM and ARC headers are valid. If you have got it working, please can you share which MTA you are using and the software you are using for DKIM and ARC. Thank you. Regards Philip

Language confusion in held mail notifications

I just upgraded from Mailman 3.2.0 (La Villa Strangiato) to Mailman 3.3.4 (Tom Sawyer) - Docker Mailman v0.3.12. As the language is not possible to set, and the default language is English, I set my user profile to Spanish and the list config to German, to figure out where the changes would take affect. Docker-mailman 0.4.0 release

Hey Everyone, I tagged and released 0.4.0 version of container images for Mailman. This release includes several fixes that have been accumulating in the repo for how Mailman is setup in the containers. This release does not include any mailman component version bump from 0.3.12 release. More specifically, the major change is that we no longer require static IP configuration in the container images (like previously) and can handle dynamic addresses that are allocated to the containers by Docker. This should help simplify the setup for folks using Kubernetes or other setup than the provided docker-compose files. The migration steps are documented here[1]. disable body transcoding

Hi, I have disabled all message modifications and filtering from within the webUI, and created empty header and footer template files. Still, some list messages get their body encoding changed to base64, breaking DKIM. What can I do to prevent this? (I'm a newbie to mailman3, so please give somewhat complete commands. I have read other threads with similar questions, but did not understand some shortened configuration commands.) BR

Username being set to givenname for socialaccount login

I have a new mailman3 install setup with Okta as a social application. This is working well for logins and data comes through as expected, but for some reason the username is being set at to a lowercase version of the given_name. The Extra data on the social users in the admin interface looks good, so I don’t think it’s a problem with the attributes coming from Okta. We have tried a number of variations on the below setting, but that all of them other than the default of “username” end up with the username being empty. Django primer for Mailman admins

Hey Everyone, This weekend I wrote some documentation[1] that I thought would be useful for Mailman admins when dealing with Django, since it is a frequent topic on -users list. The intent was to add only required information for admins to work with Mailman installs and provide enough pointers to right places, wherein more information can be found instead of duplicating them in Mailman's docs since it it often goes stale. Since the most common theme of questions are configuration (settings), management commands and deployment (running), I distributed the whole page in those three sections. If you as a system admin had to spend some time figuring out certain things about Django, it would be good to respond on this thread or just open a MR with additions to the page[1]. Hi all: I need to provide the list moderators a way to change the moderation flag for users from whichever it is (normally "list default processing") to "hold for moderation" and viceversa (to "list default" or to "accept") I understand that it could be done via console script (That's the way I did on mailman2: I made two commands using "withlist", one to hold, moderar.py, and other one to accept, desmoderar.py. mm3mod: command line moderation tool

Because we're not running postorius, and the moderate-by-mail change is not available in the older version of mailman3 we're running, I needed a tool to moderate lists from the command line. I found mailman-tools, but wasn't able to get them working with python3, so I started from scratch. Maybe someone else will find it useful https://git.tethera.net/mm3mod.git/about/ It's a work in progress, but I am running the version from that repo in production. Like any program using the REST interface, in principle this has complete administrator access to your mailman site, so you need to to trust both this code and the users you let run it. I do run it in "kiosk mode" via ssh command="/home/listmod/.local/bin/mm3mod" ssh-rsa blahblah in .ssh/authorized_keys. This is more of a keeping-honest-people-honest kind of thing.

Controlling Mailman3 from the Linux commandline

All, Not versed in Python, I found using the Python gateway to Mailman3 commands rather cumbersome for the few and very simple interactions I have with the shell. So I implemented a set of .bash scripts that I use instead. They all have this from, where the last part is the Mailman shell command (in this case the command for adding members in file $1 to the list $2). #!/bin/bash exec /opt/mailman/mm/venv/bin/mailman -C "/opt/mailman/mm/mailman.cfg" members --addmembers $1 $2 To invoke it: . addMembers.bash <FILE_OF_EMAIL> <listname> I have other scripts for commands such as: List all lists List all members on all lists (with a sort -u) Send an email with a given list's members to a given address Delete members from a list Delete members from all lists Help Count members on a list Note the one that sends the member list to a given email address. It does this: #!/bin/bash exec /opt/mailman/mm/venv/bin/mailman -C "/opt/mailman/mm/mailman.cfg" members $2 |grep -v -e "has no members"|sed -e 's/.*/\L&/'|mailx --subject=$2 $1 This one I use a lot because the system has a bug that does not allow moderators to see the list of members on the list they are supposed to moderate. I know you can't run mailman commands in the docker images and I have to copy the data to an area where he docker images can access it, but in looking that the commands I got the list settings to import docker exec -it mailman-core mailman import21 [REDACTED](a)REDACTED].REDACTED].org /opt/mailman/migration/config.pck *** this worked But having issues importing the archives? do i run this on mailman-core OR mailman-web? Blocking email addresses

I've configured a Mailman 3 server with Postfix and added OpenDKIM to the latter to provide the DKIM headers, and configured Mailman to provide the ARC headers. However, in sending test messages to a mailbox hosted by Microsoft, I'm seeing a header like this: ARC-Authentication-Results: i=2; mx.microsoft.com 1; spf=pass (sender ip is 1.2.3.4) smtp.rcpttodomain=destination.org smtp.mailfrom=mmserver.org; dmarc=bestguesspass action=none header.from=mmserver.org; dkim=test (signature was verified) header.d=mmserver.org; dkim=fail (signature did not verify) header.d=sender.org; arc=fail (47) (I've changed the domains and IP address) Manually sending an email from the server to the same external email address does give me an email with a valid DKIM header: Authentication-Results: spf=pass (sender IP is 1.2.3.4) smtp.mailfrom=mmserver.org; destination.org; dkim=test (signature was verified) header.d=mmserver.org;destination.org; dmarc=bestguesspass action=none header.from=mmserver.org;compauth=pass reason=109 So I'm unclear as to where the problem may lie ... Mailman Web has not been updated for wo weeks. Does that mean I can download that Postorius and it will work with the latest mailman core updated in the past day? New messages not being archived

I have 2 active lists that are properly mailing out and working, plus an admin testing list that is as well. The list info pane correctly shows the mail volume and the imported archives from the previous 2.1 installation are present for both active lists. None of the 3 lists are generating new entries in the archive, all 3 are set up with default settings except 1 active and admin are set to private. I know that hyperkitty is showing some new content as admin was created in postorius and the list is present in hyperkitty and working in mailman. None of the logs show anything of note, mailmanweb.log has no new entries since it caused a serious issue when I changed the domain, uwsgi-error is the same and uwsgi.log has proper access logs. When trying to add a new thread via the hyperkitty interface I can see the email go through the maillog, I get the email with the entered content and everything else works, it just doesn't add a new thread to the archive. The installation is set up with the default settings from the virtualenv installation guide. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Mailman container images 0.3.12 is now out

Hey Everyone, I have just tagged release 0.3.12 on Github for container images for Mailman 3[1]. This release includes the fix for CVE-2021-40347 that was announced earlier today. For the folks using 0.3 or 0.3.11 release tags, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to this release. This release also bumps the version of Mailman Core to 3.3.4, Mailmanclient to 3.3.3 and Django-mailman3 to 1.3.7. Note that is since the main and v0.3.12 branches are different in many ways, the default documentation[2] and the docker-compose.yaml files in the main branch aren't accurate if you are using the stable release. Please refer to the README[3] at v0.3.12 tag in the Github repo for more accurate docker-compose.yaml and documentation. The project has grown large enough that we need to start versioning the documentation, if someone has experience with versioning docs using Github pages and mkdocs, then I very much need some help here! For those of you who are using the rolling release, it is recommended that you **don't** upgrade to this stable release. The fixes have been pulled into the rolling tags too, so just make sure that you upgrade to the latest published version of rolling release, which as of this writing should be based off on fda837f8d15540e190992c30f7971f50fca54dac commit[4]. This might not be the latest by the time you upgrade if I add a new commit, so look for versions published after 4:00 PM PST 9/5/2021. I am also working on cutting a new release, 0.4.0, which is backwards incompatible with the setup required to talk to web server and MTA (hence the minor version bump!). That should bring the rolling releases and stable releases closer to each other and add improvements around not needing static IPs in the docker network anymore, plus several bug fixes. If someone wants to test the upgrade to 0.4.0 from 0.3 release and is willing to try out the instructions at [5], it would give me some confidence in cutting out the release sooner. The only thing stopping the release of 0.4.0 images is that I haven't verified if the upgrade from 0.3 is documented enough or not. For all the registries listed in README[6], I am still trying to push to Quay (maybe I need to just skip pushing to Quay :-). So, just use the other two to pull the images, Github (ghcr.io) has more generous pull download policy for un-authenticated users though. New vulnerability in Hyperkitty master branch

Hey Everyone, A new vulnerability was reported against Hyperkitty’s git master branch branch which can expose the archives of a private Mailing List through the new Feeds API that was added to Hyperkitty recently to someone who isn't a member or logged-in. Thanks to Ngo Wei Lin for reporting this vulnerability. This bug does not affect any stable released version of Hyperkitty and only affects installations from source (1.3.5b1 version). To differentiate from the vulnerable version, I have bumped the version in master branch to 1.3.5b2, so if you have 1.3.5b1 installed, you should upgrade! The fix for this bug has been committed to master branch[1][2] less than an hour ago as of this writing. If you are using git branches to install Hyperkitty, you can upgrade using the following command: $ pip install --upgrade git+https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty@master I have also triggered a build for Mailman container images[3] with this changes, so if you are using the rolling container images (which are the only affected ones), then you should upgrade to the latest one when the build[1] finishes (approximately in next 30mins). Do note that this version of rolling release of mailman-web image also includes the fix for the vulnerability announced against Postoruis earlier today. CVE-2021-40347: New security release for Postorius

Everyone, A security vulnerability was reported against Postorius recently which allows any logged-in user to unsubscribe any other member on any other list on same Mailman installation using a specially crafted POST request due to a missing ownership check. This has been assigned CVE-2021-40347. This affects all past versions of Postorius including 1.0.0. Thanks to Kunal Mehta for the security report and a quick patch to fix the vulnerability. I am also attaching a minimal patch that fixes it along with this email, without tests and NEWS so that it applies to older versions of Postorius easily (I have tested the included patch with 1.3.3, 1.3.2 git tags). Upgrading to 1.3.5 release is highly recommended and it mostly includes the fix for this vulnerability (and a small compatibility fix for django-mailman3 1.3.6) so it shouldn’t introduce any other bugs. You can upgrade to this release by running: $ pip install postorius==1.3.5 A full change log is available here[1] as usual and can be downloaded from PyPI[2]. How to increase maximum size of the message in mailman

Hi Team, I am currently running Mailman 3 with version 3.3.1 and in-built postfix version 2.10.1-6 on RHEL 7.5 with PostgreSQL 11.7 version with default values. I am almost running 2200 lists with 128 GB RAM and 24 Cores on a single VM and on which all the mailman 3 components are running. I have been running this setup in production for the past 2 years and 6 months. I have recently encountered a scenario where a user sent mail with a PPT attachment to one of the lists on the said mailman server. The mail is received by postfix on the mailman server and is handed over to mailman at *0.0.0.0:8024 <http://0.0.0.0:8024>.* But the /var/log/maillog says the below error during the above hand shake. *status=bounced (host 0.0.0.0[0.0.0.0] said: 552 Error: Too much mail data* I have browsed google for understanding and fixing the issue. During which I encountered the information given by Mr. Mark Sapio at https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/…. But I could not fix the issue as it is mentioned the default size limit is 33554432. I request someone to suggest where I can customize the value 33554432 and put a higher value or can be configured without any limit. I have configured message_size_limit as 100MB at postfix level. I would like to configure, in fact, the same at mailman level too. But I don't understand where to edit. I tried editing the variable DATA_SIZE_DEFAULT value in /var/lib/mailman/mailman/.tox/py36-nocov/lib/python3.6/site-packages/aiosmtpd/smtp.py file but unfortunately no luck. So, could someone please help us in this regard ? Question about message bounce stats

When I used Mailgun some time back, it had a feature of, for any specific outgoing mailing, being able to show you stats and other details of which mails were received ok, which bounced, and which were undeliverable, which I found helpful to check every so often. Their system also kept track of long-term trends, eg for addresses that frequently failed. Does Mailman3 keep such stats, and if so is there any way to get access to them, even if only API? I would think it useful to do so (and yes, for individual outgoing messages at least for a period). auto-away notices as bounces

Looking into details, his mail provider sent out lots of auto aways notices marked with Auto-Submitted: auto-replied (vacation) Should we not exclude these as being counted as bounce? Hi, I am in the process to migrate from mailman 2 to mailman 3 and currently I am setting up the new environment and do some tests and play around with the new system. I'd like to have a seperate log for list subscriptions and unsubscriptions. For that reason I added the following section to the mailman-extra.cfg file: [logging.subscribe] path: subscribe.log That created a file called subscribe.log but not everything regarding subscription / unsubscriptions is added to the file. Unwanted E-mail to Maillists Submitted via Postorius Interface

Hi Everyone, I’ve seen a recent uptick in SPAM messages making it into mailing lists. Looking at the raw, it seems that the e-mails are being submitted thru the Postorius/Hyperkitty “Start a New Thread” interface. Is there a way to turn that off? We would want people to only be able to post via e-mail. Part of the problem is that our anti-spam system RSPAMD trusts the mailman-web IP… so it doesn’t scan things originating from there.. ☹ Another uestion: Is there a way to implement captcha, or is there a recommended gate that can be put in the signup process? Apparently bots are finding a way thru the signup process, and then sending messages to the list via the Postorius web interface. There seems to be a Django plugin for it; but it appears the Mailman code would have to be adjusted to implement it. I’m open to any suggestions, including on places to check for misconfiguration. 😊 Thanks. - Matt Alberti

Error on timeout vs retry values

Hi everyone, I have recently setup a new mailman3 service using the venv method. Everything is functionally working however I keep getting an error sent to the mailman email every min which I can not seem to figure out why. /opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.7/site-packages/django_q/conf.py:142: UserWarning: Retry and timeout are misconfigured. Mailman backend maintenance task

Dear all. My apologies if the answer to this question is obvious, but I am pretty newbie for 3 version, and to be very honest I haven't had enough time yet to have a deep look into the documentation. Our customer is currently using PostGRESQL as backend, and we would like to perform some maintenance tasks, namely running vacuum full, or at least trying to rebuild hyperkitty_email primary key related index. We have been asked on the real impact of putting in place such initiative. Though the latter is related to archiving, I haven't found a way to stop just Hyperkitty or Django related processes other than stopping Mailman's core, hence preventing mails addressed to distribution lists from being delivered, could you please confirm if I am correct? Regarding the former, as far as I have read, the "mappings" lists -> addresses are stored just in the database, so if we run some kind of procedure or task like vacuum which will lock exclusively tables, or want anyway to have the database stopped for a cold backup or whatever, Mailman willl not work, that is, again the mails addressed to the distribution lists will not be delivered. Will you please confirm this point, too? Really wish we had a testing environment to have been able to check this ourselves and not bothering others, but unfortunately we lack it, and we need to provide an answer as soon as possible. Installing mailman3 from Ubuntu 20.04 repository

I’m testing Mailman3 on Ubuntu 20.04 and installing the packages from the default Ubuntu repo. I’m not sure I’ll perform the install this way once we move to production. I don’t know what group is responsible for keeping the Mainlam3 package in the Ubuntu repository up to date but I’d like to find out how committed that groups is to keeping the package current. We patch often and it would be convenient if the Mailman3 package is kept updated and current. If there is going to be some significant lag time I may decide to install manually when we go to production. Any thoughts on this? — Andy

Error when disabling signup

Dear all, over the last couple of weeks, I have installed and configured mailman3 using the docker containers. It took me some time, but now it works quite well. At last, I wanted to disable the sign-up because only LDAP users should be able to login. As described in django_mailman3/views/user_adapter.py, I added the following line to my settings_local.py: ACCOUNT_ADAPTER = 'django_mailman3.views.user_adapter.DisableSignupAdapter' After that, an error is thrown: ModuleNotFoundError at /accounts/login/ No module named 'django_mailman3.views.user_adapter' What could be the reason for that and how to solve it? Hi everyone. I have a dedicated Ubuntu box that is running mailman3. I have a single email list on it. The subscriber base is about 350 users. There is a good chunk of these users that are aol.com or yahoo.com users. I've been getting complaints from the Yahoo people that mail is delayed at times, or messages that come out of order. Looking at the mailq on the box, I can see there are plenty of emails stuck in the queue. Avoiding non-members to be saved.

Hi all: Yesterday I had a problem with a private list. A spammer sent a mail forging one address that was a non-member (in fact was an "accept this no subscriber mails" from mailman 2.1 import) with very bad intentions and it was distributed. There were no list of "accept this non members" in the Postorius config (but I'm sure that that address was "accepted" in 2.1). To avoid this from any other non member address I deleted ALL non-members. I think it is solved now (deleting all and putting to hold just the non-members addresses that I would want to pass messages on) The fact is that any sender address of mails sent to the list is saved as a "non member", and it make me nervous as it will grow despite it is a legitimate message or not. Anybody knows if there is a per list config to avoid saving all that addresses as non members? o a overall config? I couldn't find anything about this in the config pages (or googling it) Thanks in advance. --

Hello, I have been running Linux mailman2 servers for about 10 years, and sendmail/postfix servers for over 20 years. I have a client who wants to upgrade to Mailman 3 from their current Mailman2 system. I wanted to avoid the disruption of an upgrade, so I implemented a series of test servers with different names (leaving the mailman2 server in production at its historical address) running Ubuntu 18 and Ubuntu 20, using the mailman3 packages (3.1and 3.2 respectively). I sort of got it running with mailman 3.2 on Ubuntu 20, but couldn’t get Hyperkitty archiving to work. Plus the fact that mail bounce handling isn’t implemented prior to mailman 3.3.2, I decided to install the latest mailman version available in a venv environment, using the instructions at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html I followed the instructions carefully using the same paths, and tracked down and fixed errors as each step progressed. I finally set up a WSGI server according to the instructions, searched for and found (fragmentary) instructions for setting up the Apache configuration, started the mailman3 and mailman web services, and now have no errors in the /opt/mailman/web/logs files, the /var/log/apache files, and in syslog. But when I try to connect via the Web, I get the message "Server error An error occurred while processing your request.” in my browser. No other clues. I’m completely stuck, and I need help to conclude this rapidly, the client really needs the new service up and running ASAP. I’m at the limit of my competence. I’ve been learning Python on and off (insufficient available time), and I installed Django and ran the tutorials. I still am woefully unskilled in the subtleties of a complex Python project like Mailman/Posterious/Hyperkitty, and I really need the help of an expert who can log into the server and see for themselves where the problem(s) are, and fix them. What I need is an experienced Python programmer, who has installed, run, and upgraded venv mailman3 installations. Of course, I will pay for this expertise, and charge it to the end client. In other words, I will pay you directly, and then I will worry about getting paid myself later. I am ready to pay €60/h for your skills, paid directly to your bank account, after receipt of your invoice. It shouldn’t be all that much work, since everything has been installed according to instructions, I’m just not a good enough Python programmer to get all the parts to work together correctly. It’s important to note that the end client is an organisation of European political parties, the virtual machine running the Ubuntu 20 server is hosted at OVH in France. Thus the professional with whom I would work should preferably also be based in the EU, and subject to EU law. Mailman3 stopped working after Upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04

Hey, I have set up mailman3 with mailman3-web on my mailserver and after upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04 my setup stopped working. I can see repeating log entries of mailman trying to reach something within hyperkitty and getting an error. The same constant repeating cycle of log entries is visible in my log files. I have attached my config files as well as the logfiles for mailman3 and mailman-web. As you can see, I'm not really getting many errors, yet within 5 seconds there are almost 2000 lines of log entries where mailman tries to reach something within hyperkitty over and over and over again. One thing I did to create an error message is start up both services, then edit a test list, that I created, in the web interface. Anyone has a python recipe to do this? I've been searching and googling but I cannot find the way of doing it safely. UnpicklingError on mailman lists command

Hi all -- I'm getting the error below when trying to exec the "mailman lists" command. I've turned debugging on within my test mailman.cfg like so... [database] class: mailman.database.mysql.MySQLDatabase <snip> debug: yes [logging.database] level: debug path: dbmailman.log and can see a lot of info including the row(s) with each lists data returned in dbmailman.log. Any guidance on further troubleshooting/debugging? Greetings again! Is there a remote API I can use to manage a list? One of the lists I manage has 1800 or so users, the vast majority of which have never posted, and I need to remove them (preferably not one by one). The list is meant to be actively used, so going forward I want to be able to unsubscribe anyone who hasn't posted in the last year. Both of those would be much more nicely done with a python script on my computer if I had a means to communicate with the mm3 server remotely. Any and all help appreciated! -- ~Ethan~

at the finish line of mailman3 docker, but can't sign in.

I am trying to setup mailman3 in docker and have some questions, I can see the finish line :) i hope. I start my images and I can access the web,http://Servername.domain.com/postorius/lists/ and no list are there of course, but How do i sign in? I click the forget link and I have to enter in a email address. I put in the email address I added to the docker-compose.yaml but that does not wrok. I have these setup in the .yaml file. MAILMAN_ADMIN_USER: The username for the admin user to be created by default. MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL: The email for the admin user to be created by default. I found this url http://Servername.domain.com/admin/login However I never set a password and here is no forget button, Basically once I have docker installed, and mailman3 up and no lists are available, How do I setup or/and sign in as admin? Also In docker how can I test sending mail? the command "mailman-web sendtestemail youremailid@domain" from the mailman-web container does not work. How can I make sure my containers can send and receive mail?

migration

Hi folks. Some time ago, I set up mm3 and have been running a bunch of lists on it with great success. I was a long-time mm2 user, and while the differences are significant, I'm glad I made the switch. However, in what seems to have been a moment of insanity in retrospect, I installed mm3 from my OS' package repository. Yeah, I know, that was dumb. Now I'd like to migrate to a new server, and I'd like to install mm3 in the normal way. Is there a way that I can "dump" the configuration from an existing mailman3 server, and "import" it into a new instance? I'd really like to avoid re-doing all of the configuration, etc, as there are quite a few lists and everything is set up pretty much the way I want it. Dear all. Perhaps this is a sort of dummy questions for software supported by the Community, my apologies in advance. I have been asked on information related to the end of life of support for 3.1 version, and I was wondering whether you could please provide some insights on how the Mailman life cycle is conceived. For instance, are there periodically planned releases, say 1 per year? If so, will you please confirm how long we are to expect the previous versions to be maintained? Hi, Background: I have a painful mailman3 installation based on ubuntu 18.04 packages, a mistake I regret but have to live with until I can finish a fresh install of the latest. Currently running on mailman 3.1.1-9 and python-django-mailman3 version 1.1.0-4 (if that matters). I migrated > 1200 lists from an old mailman2 installation. That brought along all of the footers (naturally), and now I'm trying to get rid of them but failing miserably. I've spent a fair bit of time reading archives of this list, but I'm still stuck. Here's what's configured... In /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- var_dir: /var/lib/mailman3 # Root directory for site-specific template override files. template_dir: $var_dir/templates -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In that directory, list-specific directories like: /var/lib/mailman3/templates/lists/list.mydomain/ and, as an example, en/list_member_digest_footer.txt For the migrated lists, that might have: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ $display_name mailing list -- $listname To unsubscribe send an email to ${short_listname}-leave@${domain} ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Based on what I've read elsewhere, my first attempt was to create an empty file doing 'cp /dev/null list_member_digest_footer.txt' to replace the one installed in migration. That had no effect. As a shot-in-the-dark, I did 'cp /dev/null list:member:regular:footer.txt' to see if that might have some effect. Nope. I suppose some decision is made earlier in the process to tack on the footer, so these files I'm manipulating have zero effect. Anyone have suggestions of what I can do? Thanks in advance. David

requiring questionnaire from new users

Greetings! Is there a way to require new users to answer a questionnaire when they subscribe? I suspect that one of the lists I manage is getting a lot of subscribers who don't understand what that particular list is for, and having to answer a question or two would allow me to direct them to better resources. non-members issue with held email

Hi I want to check a issue with a few mailing lists of us. We do run mailman3 on debian with debian package 3.2.1-1 (not yet updated for backup reasons). We created a new mailinglist, added 3 owner and several members. Now we want some email addresses to post to that list but not receive mails from the list. So I added those to the "non-member" area of the mailinglist and checked every non-member to "acceppt at once". But on a test, a email address, which is owner AND non-member, cannot send to mailinglist, always get a "HOLD: ...... The message is not from a list member" The Email address in that HOLD log entry is the same as in the owner/non-member list. Any idea howto check the mailman3 logs for this case? Thank you. Deleting default "example.com" domain breaks everything

Hello. I'm new with v3 of mailman. Installed via aptitude on deb10. After I logged in as admin, I created my actual domain, as "example.com" was there by default. I then deleted example.com, and everything broke. The only site I had was still using example.com. How do I either a) restore example.com in config or CLI (as web UI is completely broken now), or b) move my one and only "Site 1" to the domain I created? Thanks.
