I.e. Gmail applies a DMARC policy of p=reject to mail From: gmail.com even though it's published DMARC policy is p=none. You need to apply DMARC mitigations to this mail. Unfortunately, this requires setting DMARC Mitigate unconditionally to Yes. Mailman 2.1 has a feature to apply DMARC mitigation to messages From: specific domains regardless of any domain specific DMARC Policy. Unfortunately this hasn't been implemented in Mailman 3 yet. Where does sender postorius@ come from?

I just realized, that mails for registering an account and/or resetting ones password are obviously sent from postorius@SERVE_FROM_DOMAIN. Why are they not sent from MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL? The problem is: - an account is trying to register with a mailaddress from a HostEurope-server - HostEurope-Servers are doing Sender-Callouts (bad practise :-D) to verify that a mailaccount exists - mail is then bouncing, b/c those are not answered (shoud I?): status=bounced (host [80.237.138.5] said: 550-Sender verification is required but failed. - bounce then can't be processed, since mailaccount does not exist :-D status=bounced (mail for SERVE_FROM_DOMAIN loops back to myself) Am I missing something are shouldn't it be better to send those mails from MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL? (I don't want to mess with these sender callouts or change anything, HostEurope has been a little bit of a pain in the ... with mailinglists and not much help at all). Thanks in advance, Jens.

Proxy error.

My server has several aliases. And Chrome's cookies sometimes get messed up because of it. Several users get a proxy error when trying to connect to the mailman website. One person just fixed it by clearling cookies, although this is not a great solution. Error log says "You may need to add 'psfcmail2.psfc.mit.edu' to ALLOWED_HOSTS". mailman3 auto-disabling of subscriptions

I'm running an email list on mailman3. My users are getting inundated by messages saying that their subscriptions have been disabled due to their bounce score exceeding the mailing list's bounce_score_threshold. But there is nothing wrong with these users' email accounts. They are all perfectly fine. Apparently the issue is somehow related to spam. Whenever I (as admin) get these emails, I just unsubscribe the user and then re-subscribe them. But also, the user gets confused and emails me about it, which unnecessarily takes up their time and mine. The relevant list settings are currently... bounce score threshold: 5 bounce info stale after: 7d bounce disabled warning interval: 7d bounce disable warnings: 5 What's the best way to fix this? I'm considering reducing "bounce info stale after" to "2d" and/or increasing "bounce disabled warning interval" to "90d".

Postorius -owner messages

I manage a number of lists for non-technical users that are considered owners of their own lists. Some of them have expressed that they would like to emulate some other mailing list services' "Quiet" owners for people that need to be able to access the list settings for administrative reconciliation as well as a fallback, but want to leave subscription requests or approval of messages to others that are more involved in the day-to-day management. They'd like to disable owner delivery for themselves, and I'd like to not make the change for them using the shell every time I get one of their requests. We have a Postorius front end set up and working, but it doesn't appear that disabling delivery using the List-based preferences in the Postorius interface stops those Owner communications. Is there a way to allow users to disable that natively in Postorius? Thanks, Sam

Apache proxy error messages.

I have two users who are getting a proxy error message when they try to connect her our mailman server: Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request Reason: Error reading from remote server Apache/2.4.52 (Ubuntu) Server at lists.psfc.mit.edu Has anybody else in an errorlike this before? One person manage to get around this by going in incognito mode on the browser. Does that make any sense?

unrequested unsubscription

I have a Mailman 3 email list, running on Mailman 3.3.3 on Debian 11. A few of the list members are reporting that they received Email Address Unsubscription Confirmation emails, but claim that they never requested to be unsubscribed. (All are Gmail users. but they might be coincidental, since most list members are Gmail users.) Has anyone seen this behavior before? Any ideas on what might be happening?

How to remove a message with an invalid Message-Id?

I have a fun problem: apparently a message sent to a mailing list has an invalid Message-Id (I think), which is causing the message parse to fail while attempting to archive the message. Unfortunately, the message seems to be trapped somewhere and resulting in error logging every few minutes. Is there any way to find and remove the message? Argh, that is it! Thanks!!!! Admin immed notify YesNo Should the list moderators get immediate notice of new requests, as well as daily notices about collected ones? List moderators (and list administrators) are sent daily reminders of requests pending approval, like subscriptions to a moderated list, or postings that are being held for one reason or another. Setting this option causes notices to be sent immediately on the arrival of new requests as well. Why is a mailing list not sending the moderator subscribe or post notifications?

Hi - I migrated from mailman 2 to mailman 3. All but one list is working correctly. That list is not sending the moderator any emails. It appears to configured exactly like the other lists. I.e. subscription requests and moderated users posts don't generate any emails to the moderator (me). I tried changing moderator email addresses, and everything else I could think of, but nothing worked. What can I do to debug this problem? This list is much larger than any of my other lists. And has a huge archive. I doubt that is a factor, but I’ll mention it anyway. Also, how do I run the command to remind me of awaiting moderation requests, so that I can run it hourly? In case this can’t be fixed quickly. As an aside, I had some mailman 2 lists that had no moderators. I could swear that for them, that the owners would get moderated requests. Am I hallucinating? I can't check the old server any longer. Thanks. – Mark

Setting moderation_action when approving a message from a non-member fails

Hello! When a message is held due to it being from a non-member, I notice that Mailman creates a non-member record for the sender automatically. This is great! But if I try to set their moderation action while approving the message in Postorius, I get: Failed to set moderation action: xxx(a)gmail.com is not a member address of xxx(a)xxx.org Is this expected? I would like to be able to set the moderation action for the non-member that has already been created. I am on Postorius v1.3.2. Thanks! -- Tom Smyth (he/him)

Read-Mostly list?

I wish to have a list that anyone can read. A few designated people can post without moderation, and all other users are moderated. Is this possible? I don't see a way in the list settings to create users who are not moderated when the default action is to moderate. Thanks! -- Steve

Mailman sends Welcome emails, but does not send [List] postings emails

Having recently installed this same version of mailman (GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer)) a few times successfully, I have a puzzle with a current new installation. Via the command line I can create lists and add members, and the new members receive their Welcome message from mailman. But when a member sends an email to post to a list (e.g. hc(a)cs.org as shown here), the mailserver delivers it to mailman: May 29 16:36:58 localhost postfix/lmtp[44386]: E762E427CB: to=<hc(a)cs.org>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:8024, delay=0.84, delays=0.8/0/0.01/0.03, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Ok) but no copy is sent to the members / subscribers. After the posts are received by mailman (as recorded in /var/tmp/mailman/logs/smtp.log), nothing more is added in any of the log files in /var/tmp/mailman/logs/... An attempt to imitate a technique seen elsewhere for [logging.smtp] for leaving some breadcrumbs by adding into mailman.cfg: - - - [logging.subscribe] level: debug path: mailman.log - - - and restarting mailman led to no detectable change. Migration failure (2.1.29 to 3.3.8 on Debian testing)

Hello, I have both the mailman and mailman3-full packages installed on my machine and I'm following the migration guide located here: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html Running the command { mailman import21 mylist(a)mysite.com /var/lib/mailman/lists/mylist/config.pck } completes once I create the list but states that it cannot convert the msg_footer and digest_footer mailing list attributes. (I might also point out that the { mailman create mylist(a)mysite.com } command isn't actually documented on that webpage.) I can't seem to find the manage.py script in my $PATH and after searching, I find it as part of the mailman3-web package. When I run { sudo -H -u list python manage.py hyperkitty_import mylist(a)mysite.com /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/mylist.mbox/mylist.mbox }, it fails with "ImportError: No module named django.core.management". If I run the script directly as { sudo -H -u list /usr/share/mailman3-web/manage.py ... }, I get "PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/share/mailman3-web/settings_local.py'". By default, settings_local.py's group is www-data, and not knowing where to go next, I decided to try changing that file's group to list. When I re-ran the command (as user list), I got a Python traceback that gives "PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/var/log/mailman3/web/mailman-web.log'". Next, I changed the file's group back to list and decided to try running the manage.py script as the www-data user. This results in "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/django_q/conf.py:139: UserWarning: Retry and timeout are misconfigured." and "System check identified some issues:" followed by a list of "Auto-created primary key used when not defining a primary key type, by default 'django.db.models.AutoField'" warnings for a number of Django tables. At the end of this list is "CommandError: The list address must be given on the command-line". But it *was* given. My questions are: 1. How do I undo any damage (if any) my efforts may have caused? 2. What's the correct way to run manage.py?

Hello, I might miss something here but I'm confused about a difference between Mailman2 and 3. On MM2 I just subscribed a mailinglist via my EMail address. I didn't need to create an account on the MM2 server first. But it seems on MM3 it is otherwise. For example I use MM3 on python.org. Hi, I'm using mailman 3.3.8. Some messages with attachments from Google users get rejected by spam filters because of invalid DKIM signatures. It seems, that mailman alters some lines in the body. Why are "Subscription options" left unselected if I don't manually select them?

When I subscribe to a mailing list, and I don't manually select some of the "Subscription options", they are left unselected when I go back to look at them. I would have thought that if I didn't make a selection, that they would be set to a default option. Or am I wrong? Thanks.

dmarc mitigation debug

Hi gang! I have a list with DMARC mitigation action "Replace From: with list address" DMARC Mitigate unconditionally "Yes". But list posts still have the poster's From:, breaking DMARC. How can I debug this? For a start, I looked in my sqlite database. Changes on the web interface list settings seem to be correctly applied to the database. Importing mailman 2 shows member's "Moderation Action" = "Default processing". But new members show = "None". Why

I imported my mailing lists from mailman 2. If I view the Members, it say "Moderation Action" = "Default processing". But when I now subscribe myself or other people to the list, and view the new Members, it say "Moderation Action" = "None" for them. Should that be happening? The mailing list 's "Default action to take when a member posts to the list" setting is set to "Default processing". Thanks. - Mark

How do you remove the Hold on all non-member forwarded emails?

Hi Mailman3 users, I have recently started using mailman3 and it's a wonderful piece of software. But I am having trouble using one of its configurations. I configured my mailmain3 instance to accept all non-member emails, as I want all emails that are sent to the mailman client to go to all subscribers without having it held for moderation -- I did this by setting this setting: https://i.imgur.com/PGzaD0k.png Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined. (Details for generic_nonmember_action) -> "Accept" But this doesn't work for forwarded emails. Even if the email address that is being forwarded from is included in the "List of non-member addresses whose postings should be automatically accepted." I noticed that all emails that are forwarded to the mailing list are always held for moderation -- though this isn't the case for email that are sent to the mailing list directly. But I want it so that emails that are even forwarded to my mailman mailing list don't get held in moderation. How do I set mailman to do this? I was thinking if there is no way to configure this easily then I might have to do this from the code, which means I might have to ask on the developer mailing list -- or I have to go with an entirely different solution (using something other than mailman3). I hope someone here is willing to help, and in either case thanks for anyone that is willing enough to read this. Sincerely,

How to edit default 'Reject (with notification)' message

Dear all, I want to modify the default text sent in response to when we select 'Reject (with Notification)' in 'Message Acceptance > Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list' settings. Currently, the default rejection text is as follows: "Your message to the $list was rejected for the following reasons: The message is not from a list member The original message as received by Mailman is attached." I have created a template with the option, "Notice sent to a poster when their message has been rejected by the list’s moderator." but it only works if message acceptance is set to 'Hold for Moderation' and then the moderator rejects the post manually. Is there any source file, which I can modify to replace the default rejection text mentioned above? Sincerely, Zee

Virtual alias + shell

Hello, I want to have a mailman configured together with virtual alias. To do that I need to use alias_domain. I have tried to do it with mailman shell. The domain seams to be created but when I leave the shell and enter again, the domain is not longer there. On the other hand, If I create a domain in administrator interface, it is not listed in the shell. If I create in the web interface, which field correspond to the alias_domain : Domain Name, Display Name , Mail domain? Subscribing users stuck in pending hell

Hi, We frequently end up with users who never receive their email to confirm their account, leaving them in a netherworld where they cannot become list members. If I try to subscribe them via the mass subscribe option, it says I can't because their subscription is pending. If I go to subscription requests, it says there are 0. If I go to "non-members" in the UI, I can find them, but I don't see an option to convert them to members. So what's the solution to getting these people subscribed and no longer stuck in limbo? When receiving all types of system mails from mailman3 (3.3.8) there are almost all the subjects in English, althought text is in German. Am I missing somehting? The option to have the list in german is toggled and so far all the mails are in german ... also templates on different levels work fine, either en or de, but obviously the subjects are not translated (?) or taken from an English template. Any hint is appreciated, regards, Jens.

Template URI gets written incorrectly

Hi, When I create a template, it writes the URI incorrectly into the template table in the mailman3 database and the list stops working. For example, it writes: http://localhost/mailman3/postorius/api/templates/list/markslist.lists.post… When I correct it like so, all is well: https://lists.postmark.io/mailman3/postorius/api/templates/list/markslist.l… Have I missed a config setting somewhere, or is this a bug with the older Debian Mailman 3.3.3 ? /Mark

Multiple server replicas

Hello. Our Mailman 2.1 setup included 4 replica servers, all with Mailman, Exim4, Apache, etc. The configuration for the 4 mailman server instances were synchronized by linking most of the directories in /var/lib/mailman to an NFS share that is mounted on all 4 servers. Cron jobs were staggered such that an hourly job would run every 4 hours on each server, yet still get run hourly. With Mailman 3 we would like to keep the same kind of setup. However, things have changed quite a bit. Having both mailman and mailman-web instances all share their respective MySql/MariaDB databases is the easy part. For /var/lib/mailman3 it is a little less clear. So far I have symlinked messages, archives, lists, data, and templates onto the NFS share. I'm wondering about cache, locks, queue, and web/fulltext_index. Is there any standard or documented way of doing this? Thanks. -Dave -- Dave Hall Binghamton University kdhall(a)binghamton.edu

Apache shows No Lists

Running Debian 11. I have 6 mailing lists, but Apache2 says there are no lists. I have not been able to set up Postorius because nowhere is any information on *where* the configuration file is supposed to be located. I have found an example in /usr/share/doc/python3-django-hyperkitty/examples/settings.py But I don't know if this example is the right one, and I have no idea where the final file should go...

Running Mailman 3.3.8 with docker. ----- Since we migrate some lists from mailman2 to 3, there are a lot of new users/subscribers and an admin made the mistake to not checkbox the 3. option that the users don't need to verify their address. Now we have a long list of pending confirmations in different lists. Is there an easy way in the shell to mass remove these pending mailaddresses so that we don't have to do that one by one? After updating my Linux server, my old Mailman 2.1 was wiped out. I now spend 2 full days desperately trying to get Mailman3 to work with Exim4 (and Apache2) Nothing works so far. At this point I am stuck with a failing Exim4 "Router" I have set Mailman3 to use Exim in the config. In Exim4 I have set all required Mailman3 options. Is there a correct way to remove the "Are you sure you want to logout" screen?

Hi - Is there a correct way to remove the "Are you sure you want to logout" screen, after I select to logout? It seems so impossible to accidentally logout. And even if I did, it's just very easy to log back in. I did hack logout.html, and used jquery to automatically click the button. But that feels like a real hack. Although it does work. :) - Mark

How does Mailman handle spf/dkim/dmarc? Specifically, does it re-signature originating sender emails not caring whether or not the originating email has proper spf/dkim/dmarc signatures? Or does it NOT re-signature originating sender email, i.e. just pass them through without alteration?

Hyperkitty using wrong email address in archive view

Hi Folks, I notice that for people with multiple email addresses, the email address that appears as the 'FROM' address in the hyperkitty archive is not the primary address, nor is it the address that the email actually came from, but the address that was created first. (Hyperkitty version 1.3.7) When I click on that from address in the archive view, I see all the email addresses for the user -- these do not match up with the ones in the django admin screen from .../admin/account/emailaddress/ When I see 'User profile for Fred Frog' it shows obsolete addresses (not subscribed, not in the Django profile for the user). How can I as administrator get rid of bogus addresses? Or do I have to ask each user to do this? and how can I ensure that the email address displayed in the archive is the primary address, not some address that no longer works? Peter C

I want "Mass subscribe" and "Mass removal" as their own buttons, since I use them so much. I modified nav_list.html. See below. While the new buttons go to the correct page, the buttons don't get highlighted. I believe ootstrap navbar should be assigning "nav-link.active" class to the button that is clicked. But it doesn't. All the other buttons below work correctly. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Replace "visit your dashboard" with URL link, like in Mailman 2.

Has anybody attempted to change the format of the emails that are sent to the owner of a mailing list, to include a URL, instead of stating "visit your dashboard"? The former is the behavior of Mailman 2. Is there any reason why this can't be done? If nobody has tried to do so yet, I'll give it a try myself, as I'm familiar with django. Hi, today I installed MM3 with Nginx on Debian 11 following the document with a bit of "Mailman 3 installation experience" thrown in (many thanks to the authors!) with some minor changes, i.e. no encryption, and "re_path" instead of "url". I cannot get the web interface to run. Hello, I’m an administrator of a MM3 with a lot of lists, which are generated and maintained through the rest api. For testing reasons I am looking for a way to send a test mail with a ping to a list in MM3 from a mail address of an administrator to get a pong from the MM3 - or even better - get a response with the status of the list like number of recipients, number of mails waiting for moderation, etc. Does exist a solution for such a purpose? I'm having issues with my lists. For each list I have created a template [ list:user:action:subscribe ]which has a prospective subscriber have to consent to list rules before they are subscribed. This template I created is listed in Postorius for each list. I have noticed that there are no other templates listed in Postorius. Furthermore, there is no 'lists' subdirectory under Mailman's var/templates/. Help (please)!

I am writing my own archive reader script in PHP which parses the "maildir" content produced by the "prototype" archiver. When I try to access the contents from "opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/prototype/LISTNAME/new" folder I get a permission denied error. *** I'm using the "file_get_contents" PHP command to access the file. ***

Because of my own personal horror stories of waking up to finding high priority linux servers broken, due to nightly automated updates, I now prevent automatic updates on my servers. I only do manual security updates. In addition to implementing modern security techniques for our network. That is just my personal belief system. It's worked for the past 25 years. The only time we ever got hacked, was because of some stupid php scripts that our developers had put online, or because people's passwords had become leaked. And some of those situations were nightmares also. In two case of which, happened while I was away on vacation, and I had to fix everything remotely. But that was never due to updates. I probably shouldn't express my opinion. But I have a lot of empathy for the guy who discovered his mailman broken due to upgraded Python. Which triggered my nightmares. But it's great though to have a very responsive community here, to bring people back from the dead. - Mark

Default Setting for 'Results per Page' and other Web Pull-downs

Hello. For the past several months I've been in the process of migrating from Mailman2 to Mailman3 (along with many other tasks). I've just started to use the web interface heavily as I am finally doing the full migration of all my 2.1 lists. Before I ask my question, I am currently running Debian 10 which supplies mailman-3.2.1 and mailman-web 0+20180916, which are definitely old at this point. Although I will soon move to Debian 11, I am still constrained to stick to Debian packages. So if this has been fixed or enhanced in a future version I'm sorry for asking an old question. My question: when I go to any page that has a list (of lists, of members, or archives), there are pulldowns like 'Results per page' that seem to reset to the minimum number when I refresh the page. There are others like 'Hide inactive' on the Archives page. What I'm looking for is a per-user way to customize these values so I don't have to keep on setting them to the value I prefer. Amazon SES, Message-ID, and mailman

Hi, We are running a mailman 2 mailing list, soon to upgrade to mailman 3. We recently switch the mail gateway from mailgun to Amazon SES. There's a new problem that the mailman 2 archives are not able to group threads together the way they were before. Moreover, end users have their own mail clients that display the list messages, and they are complaining about issues in their local mail clients. It seems to be related to the mail header fields Message-ID: , References: , and In-Reply-To: . Amazon SES rewrites the Message-ID. Therefore, it won't match the original Message-ID, and so the second reply email won't matched with the first email in a web archive display. Additionally, email replies are often sent both to the list and to individual participants, and so it's important that both of these copies have the identical message id. Has anyone else used Amazon SES as a mail gateway, and did you have success with it? Does this interpretation of the problem seem reasonable? Would it make sense to briefly discuss "Amazon SES" in an FAQ section of the mailman documentation? Thanks, Sam

How to see the admin password reset in docker with mailman3

I am setting up a new environment of Mailman3 in docker. I understand I have to reset the password to set the password for admin. I go to forget the password, in the GUI and I put in the address I have listed in the docker-compose.yaml and I never get the email. I look at the mail log on the host and I do not see the smtp connections. I assume Django is not using the docker host but sending the mail directly?? Basically, where can I see the password email rest mail logs to make sure an email was sent out and where it is going?

If I manually add email addresses to a list and then delete them, how do i permanent delete them from Users?

I added some email addresses manually to a mailing list and then removed them. But now I can't find how to totally remove them from mailman3. They show up in the Users list. When I go to the Django interface, I don't see them listed in any selection. I thought they would show up under Emails in Hyperkitty, but they are not there. Oddly, somehow I've managed to create multiple duplicates of the same address, under Emails. Figure that one out! Configuring sendmail without virtualtable? Is this possible?

I'm presently running mailman 2 on an email server, which all use @psfc.mit.edu addresses. And which uses /etc/aliases. The directions for configuring sendmail for mailman 3, specify using virtusertable. I want my new email server to also host mailman 3 on ubuntu. Is it still possible to use sendmail, given the following directions for sendmail configuration? Seems talk using might break things. Problems getting MM3 to work

I have been using mailman2 for some 15 years ... decided that it is time to upgrade to MM3. I have to admit that I am finding it very hard to do so. My target is a Rocky Linux machine (AKA CentOS/RedHat). I am doing a test install in a virtual Debian 10 machine - the idea is learn how it hangs together before reimplement on Rocky (where I tie things down with SELinux). For me the biggest problem is the poor documentation - for someone who is new at MM3 and is not a Python programmer. After a few false starts I am doing a virtualenv installation as described: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html (Changes: I am using mariadb not postgresql, apache not nginx) I am trying to set up the WSGI server. It thinks that my domain is example.com ... when I 'grep -r example.com /opt/mailman' I see 11338 lines - far too many to look through. Could someone please tell me what/where I configure to enter my test domain. Mailman Gurus -- I run a number of small lists for my neighborhood association. The largest of these is ~120 users. Typical volumes are about 2 messages/day. In the past week or so a number of users who use gmail as their email client have complained that list emails have been going to spam or "promotions" folders. I've always had 1 or 2 users who had trouble receiving mails, but this seems to be a significant percentage of all gmail users. I have DMARC mitigation set to unconditional, and the DMARC action set to "Replace From: with list address". My emails are sent using google workspace as my SMTP relay. I'm trying to teach my users to whitelist the list domain, but they are not, in general, a tech-savvy bunch, so it is slow going. Anyone else suddenly having trouble with gmail? Any suggestions? MASS mailing list import - 900 ezmlm lists to Mailman

Hi, I hope someone can help. I have 900-ish, mostly small lists, basically all locations round the globe where people have volunteered to help particular people passing though. Those lists have 2 to 200 people. There are about 50 lists of up to 1000 people each we use for announcements. So two different setups, and a whole lot of manual work. I am moving from an old, now unreliable, host to a new one. Hopefully reliable, certainly cheaper, and better for privacy GDPR etc regs. Mailman is already installed, appears to be version 82?? on cPanel 108.0.15. Ezmlm, no surprise, is not. Installing and configuring it is not something trivial, also have to install gmail etc. Yuck. So, Mailman... going through to create one, I can see that 900 will be my life's work. I'm not a programmer, but reasonably technical, write html, css skills poor but adequate, command line isn't tooo scary, MySQL I don't go near. DOS batch files no problem! :) ANY IDEAS / suggestions appreciated! Thanks, Grant

REST API http://.../3.1/users/../preferred_address returns 404 for GET and POST

Postorius 1.3.6 does not work anymore when displaying the details of a list that I own (https://lists.XXX.org/mailman3/postorius/lists/rapcs-pilotes.listsXXXorg/) . It worked before but there was several upgrades in between (Ubuntu, apt packages, MySQL, Python). It displays the usual header/footer of the page but with "Something went wrong" above a red box with "HTTP Error 404:". /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log last entries are below (note the 404 result codes in the REST API): Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.1/users/d5...94 HTTP/1.1" 200 418 Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.1/users/d5...94/preferred_address HTTP/1.1" 404 0 Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "GET /3.1/addresses/eric(a)XXX.org HTTP/1.1" 200 379 Apr ... 127.0.0.1 - - "POST /3.1/users/d5...94/preferred_address HTTP/1.1" 404 0 /var/log/mailman3/web/mailman-web.log of course has an exception about this 404 result code. Using the MM3 shell, the preferred_address can be displayed and even modified. There are also good values in the MySQL database. Other API endpoints for users work fine (preferences, addresses, ...) Postorius system information is: Mailman Core Version GNU Mailman 3.2.2 (La Villa Strangiato) Mailman Core API Version 3.1 Mailman Core Python Version 3.8.10 (default, Mar 13 2023, 10:26:41) [GCC 9.4.0] Running Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS and Python 3.8 Thanks in advance for any hint to solve this issue (I have held messages that I would love to accept)

I am observing the following error message in the logs for one specific list: = = = relay=email-smtp.us-east-1.amazonaws.com[35.168.84.210]:587, delay=0.27, delays=0.05/0.04/0.12/0.06, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host email-smtp.us-east-1.amazonaws.com[35.168.84.210] said: 554 Transaction failed: Duplicate header 'DKIM-Signature'. (in reply to end of DATA command)) = = = As I mentioned, this happens for one single list only and this list has not been able to send any email for a week now. After checking mailman-users, I came across the following setting, which seems kind of related to my issue: = = = To distribute messages with valid DKIM signatures, I set remove_dkim_headers: yes in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cf = = = Here are my questions: 1 - I have around 100 lists and this happens for this one list only, so, I am not sure, if the issue might be solved with this change. 2 - Because this happens for this one list only, I would rather change it for this one list only, is there any option available changing it for one list only and not for the whole server? List notices in French, but subject in English

Hi, I have a list set with it's preferred language set as French and the body of the standard notification emails (eg. Welcome message) is correctly sent in French, however the subject of the emails is in English. Can the list be configured so the subject is also in French, or is this an issue with gettext .mo files somewhere? This is on Debian package Mailman 3.3.3 Thanks, Mark

An archive/read-only list on a full setup?

I have a working full installation of mailman3, postorius and hyperkitty (on Debian 11). Now I wanted to host the archive of a remote list, and I am wondering how to do this properly. After I found no documentation and no posting I simply created a list in mailman3 with only 1 dummy member. The list address is subscribed to the actual remote list. So, messages arrive and are archived. But that's not optimal because hyperkitty thinks it's a normal list where it should be read-only and do not allow subscriptions etc. What's the proper way to set up a hyperkitty-only list? -- -- Andreas :-)

Hi, I recently completed the a Mailman3 install using these[1] instructions. I'm able to access the web interface, the Django admin app, etc off the root domain URL. For example: https://mydomain.org/mailman3, https://mydomain.org/admin, https://mydomain.org/archives What's the most straightforward way to put all of these URL paths behind a different context? For example: https://mydomain.org/lists/mailman3, https://mydomain.org/lists/admin, https://mydomain.org/lists/archives I'm running Apache2 as my web server and am using mod_proxy to proxy requests to uwsgi. Debian Package Install - Ownership and Permissions

Hello, I know that installing from Debian packages is not the preferred method - unfortunately that's what I'm stuck with at the moment. I have an installation that is sort of working, but there seems to be a lot of issues relating to ownership and permissions that I'll have to manage by hand, so I am asking for some guidance. I'm seeing an interplay between 'list' (the existing Mailman2 user), www-data (the Apache user) and root. Given that it seems like almost everything that's part of mailman3-web/django/hyperkitty is running in uwsgi, should I maybe change /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini to use 'list' as the uid/gid rather than www-data and then also change any user/group permission to 'list' as well? Problem with starting core - problem getting a lock on something

Unfortunately our mailman-core-container doesn't start anymore correctly. We updated lately to v0.4.5 and it ran smoothly for the last 4 weeks. This morning the RAM crashed and I then had to restore some things since the RAID was affected. Anyway, the container doesn't get up anymore although we didn't change anything in the setup. Does anybody know what the error means and how we could fix that? "Could not acquire the lock" normally means that some permissions aren't right ... right? Actually I don't know where to start. Hi fellow Hyperkitties, I migrated from Mailman 2 to 3 and imported my 1st list via `manage.py hyperkitty_import` to Hyperkitty 1.3.4 (the Debian package), but that might not even be relevant to my problem: All "<" and ">" in old and new messages are shown as "<" and ">" in message views _however_ they are shown correctly in overview abstracts e.g. at //server/mm3/hyperkitty/list/testlist@server/latest Is this a bug in Hyperkitty? Hi. Just come out of a bit of a server reorg where I followed the new instructions to get Mailman3 up and running with Mailman-web. Virtualenv Installation - Mailman Suite 3.3 documentation (list.org)<https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html> In these instructions we are using 2 databases for the Mailman and Django components. I guess it doesn't harm anything to have just one database for both but wondered whether it was a good idea to split eventually? Thanks. Andrew.

Database Schema - v3.2.1 to v3.3.3

Hello. Have 4 Debian servers running Mailman3 v3.2.1 and sharing the same external MySql databases for Mailman3 and Mailman3-web. I am in the process of migrating to v3.3.3. It would be easiest to perform this upgrade one server at a time, but this would mean that for a short time I would have v3.2.1 and v3.3.3 using the same databases. I am wondering if there are any MySql schema differences between the two versions. If there are, having the two different versions 'cohabitating' won't work.. Held messages page not rendering the message

Hi When the list moderator goes to the held_messages page, they correctly get a list of the held messages and can accept/reject/discard them However, clicking on the individual message to read it doesn't work - it does nothing visible at all. From debug I can see it requests /mailman3/postorius/api/list/<list>/held_message/1/ which returns correctly (and the body includes the message as expected) - but it never renders it Any idea what could be wrong? upgrading in FreeBSD 13.1-p7: problem with aiosmtpd and lmtp runner

As you could have read yesterday, I had problems upgrading to the last versions of mailman3 related apps. The lmtp runner stopped after upgrade and showed and error in aiosmtpd package. the O.S. version running may servers is FreeBSD 13.1-p7 That was in a mailman3 server with few lists and traffic. O did the upgrade today in the server that has many lists and hard traffic. They're quite repetitive, you wouldn't want to literally port them, but once you're familiar with the scaffolding and a couple of the commands you should be able to write a lot of PHP really fast to cover the REST endpioints you most need in a library with an API to your taste. Delete Django profiles not signed up to a list

Hi, I have noticed recently I have around 2000 bogus sign-ups that have created accounts in Django. Looking through the logs these have come from the Postorius sign-up pages. I checked and email confirmation is required before the accounts are created and the email addresses that have been used do seem like they could respond to these requests. I don't want to add captchas to the form right now but is there any way to clean out these users from the database perhaps periodically based on whether the accounts are subscribed to any list? I'm playing around with installing Mailman Core, and want to have messages on a "per-list" basis sent to a special "archiver" address which I intend to make archives available at via a custom built "read-only" IMAP client. How would I go about having messages sent to this external address, short of adding the address as a subscriber?

lmtp runner not starting

This morning I upgraded the mailman3 installation of the less traffic server I have: a bunch of lists, with very slow traffic. (see pip lists at the end) I sent test mails to a pair of lists, but none were distributed or archived. postorius seemed working well. First I thought it was some I did wrong in the upgrade procedure, but then I realized the lmtp runner was not running. I followed old messages about similar problem (many of them in this same mailman-users list), but I cannot see what is wrong. There is no error logged in mailman.log. the mailman.cfg of the lmtp is the default (and was working at least a pair of weeks ago) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* from mailman.cfg [mta] incoming: mailman.mta.postfix.LMTP outgoing: mailman.mta.deliver.deliver lmtp_host: 127.0.0.1 lmtp_port: 8024 smtp_host: localhost smtp_port: 25 configuration: python:mailman.config.postfix *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* There is no one listening in port 8024. I tried changing the port (to 9024), with the same results. postfix seems working well. I's just there is nothing listening on port 8024 because lmtp runner is not running :) (from maillog): connect to 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:8024: Connection refused (another simple test) root@www:/usr/local/mailman3 # telnet localhost 8024 Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused I'm running out of ideas. Dealing with spam from Web users

We recently migrated a bunch of lists from 2.1 to 3.3.7 and have started to get spammers posting via HyperKitty (because I guess that's easier for them than SMTP). It looks like I should be able to set posts from HyperKitty to be automatically moderated by creating a header filter on "User-Agent" matching "HyperKitty" but is there a better/easier way? Also, for things which already went out to the list, obviously I can ban the spammer but what's the cleanest solution for removing their posts from list archives so that we don't further their goals by continuing to publish their handiwork? -- Jeremy Stanley

Hi All, I need to whitelist a domain for a specific mailing list on your platform. Only *(a)example.com email addresses should be allowed to post messages to this list. Could you please provide me with documentation or instructions on how to achieve this? I have already searched the knowledge base and user manuals without success. I believe it was previously available in mailman2 via Accept_these_nonmembers attribute. But I cannot find this attribute anywhere on postorius. Debian also applies patches that may or may not be backports from more recent versions. We just don't know what's going to go wrong on a distro install. Mailman also has dependencies on several system components (webserver, mailserver, WSGI implementation, SQL database, text indexer) which each come in multiple flavors, but the range of combinations we're familiar with is limited and may not even include the Debian default list. Once you have a working Mailman installation we'll be happy to help you tune it, though. (And you don't need core devs for that anyway, other Mailman site admins who hang out here can often help as well as well as we can.) Sending a message to a subscription applicant when a subscription request is made

Dear Mailman 3 wizards, Our subscription process requires that the applicant answers a few questions and sends them to the list moderator. Not having a template that gets sent on all subscribe requests, I'm using the 'list:admin:action:subscribe' template. This gets sent to the list moderator, who then sends it forward to the applicant. This is rather tedious. I would like the template to be sent directly to the applicant. There is a template, 'list:user:action:subscribe' that almost does this, but it gets sent only if the email address of the applicant is unverified. A good number of our applicants are already on our lists, so they would not get this template if we set the Subscription Policy to 'Confirm, then moderate'. Our Subscription Policy is currently: 'Moderate' for all lists. I figure that three modifications can be used to fix this: a. That we change the lines in the Python program in our installation that send 'list:admin:action:subscribe' to the list admins to instead send the template to the applying subscriber. b. That we change the lines in the Python program in our installation that send 'list:user:action:subscribe' to the subscriber with an unverified address to always do this, even when the incoming address has already been verified. c. That the current 'list:user:action:subscribe' be changed in published Mailman 3 source to 'list:user:action:confirm' and a new template ''list:user:action:subscribe' be set up to be sent when any subscribe request is made. This is more work, of course, so not likely a good thing to hack locally. It could be useful to other users. Any suggestions on how to best and most quickly do the above would be appreciated, starting with (a.) or (b.). Clearly, (a.) and (b.), if we do one of those, are hacks that will need to be applied upon Mailman updates. That's fine by me, as I'm in rush to get this done. I'd welcome pointers as to which file to change and how. Of these two options, which would be the least work? (c.) could be entered as a longer-term enhancement request. 404 on fresh install (Debian11)

Hello, very new to mailman3, I used to manage mailman2 on a Debian 10 server. The server has been upgraded to Debian 11 and mailman2 disappear… I try fresh install of mailman3, prerequisite to data migration, but without success. If some can help, I would be really greatful. Here is my path: - `mailman3-full` install with apt. MySQL config since I have this DBMS - `python3-pymysql` install with apt after seeing errors in logs - Apache2 configuration (other virtual hosts are present) ```apache2 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName newsletter.mydomain.tld Alias /static /var/lib/mailman3/web/static Alias /favicon.ico /var/lib/mailman3/web/static/postorius/img/favicon.ico DocumentRoot /var/lib/mailman3/web/static <Directory "/var/lib/mailman3/web/static"> Require all granted </Directory> ProxyPassMatch ^/static ! NGINX reports 502 after fresh install

I seem to have the components installed and working but when I try to access the web interface I receive an error 502 from the web server. I'm assuming I've misconfigured something in Nginx. Social signup?

Hi everyone, Is there a way to enable social signup (vs just login for existing users)? I've just implemented social login on my mailman lists, but realised it seems to be only login, and not signup...or at least I couldn't fine specific info to enable social signup. Is social signup something anyone has implemented (and if so how). If not, I suspect there might be a good reason (e.g. privacy, security, etc) but I'd love to hear it :-) Duane

Mailman 3 database restore unexpected behavior

Mailman3 built from source using virtual environment. Version: GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer) Python 3.9.2 (default, Feb 28 2021, 17:03:44) [GCC 10.2.1 20210110] config file: /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg Issue: I have restored the database number of times recently and experienced that every time after restoration (an hour after) all members getting an email that they are unsubscribed due to bounces, however non of the users are actually unsubscribed from any lists. It looks like there are duplicates in database and all the duplicates are getting unsubscribed? Bounces message: name(a)email.com unsubscribed from [listname] mailing list due to bounces Only restoring two files: mailman3 and mailman3web Did anyone come acroos this behavior ? It is not right that after restoring a database all 1000 user get an email that they are unsubscribed, but they are actually not. I may do something wrong during the restoring process. Please advise me.

How to list all nonmembers from a list?

Hey there, I wanted to list all nonmembers from a list, I just can't find an easy way to do it. For listing members of a list it is quite clear: mailman members $mylist Is there a similar way for nonmembers!? Actually I'm pretty sure, that one can do it with the shell and I found some documentation on that. But I'm kind of a noob in these things and already tried a little around, but can't get anything to work: dump_members(mlist.nonmembers.members) from https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/model/docs… Help qould be highly appreciated, thanks in advance! Is it possible to give the supporter team list administrator rights to all lists

Having everyone in our support team logging in using the same Mailman system administrator account is obviously far from good practice. Therefore, as the Mailman system administrator, all support is on my shoulders. Is there any way to create an administrator account for each supporter, so they can support the list administrators with their lists, without having access rights to the full system, as the Mailman list administrator have? eccentric setup question

Good morning all, we've got a somewhat eccentric setup for our mailman installation, and we're having difficulty getting some of the settings to work properly, so I'm hoping some one has some insight. Our server machine is hidden behind our firewall, with the actual machine name not availble via external DNS) and all the mail is being routed through an Exchange server. So mail to list(a)domain.com hits our exchange server, which sends it on to lists(a)listserver.domain.com The problem we're having is that if the mailman domain of the list is listserver.domain.com then spamfilters start to flag the mail since it looks like spoofing/malformed headers and so on. If the mailman domain is just domain.com then postfix rejects it with an unknown local recipient error. I though I might be able to just tweak the incoming mail headers in postfix via header_checks but that's not working, either because I've got the wrong check or it's the wrong approach, or both. postfix relay_domains might do it, I think, but if it maps listserver.domain.com to domain.com that would break the listserver domain mailing lists (I think).
