I tried to import an mbox using the command: sudo ./manage.py hyperkitty_import -l korus(a)lists.xxx.hu /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/korus.mbox I got the error message below, even if korus.mbox is a normal file (1.4GB large though). How can I import it without error? Hi All, I try to migrate my mailman2 listst to mailman3 based on this document https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html I'm on Debian 11 and using psql as datase for mailman3 and mailman3web. I try to run this command sudo -u list mailman import21 korus(a)lists.nospam.hu /var/lib/mailman/lists/korus/config.pck But I get the error message Error: No such list: korus(a)lists.nospam.hu The email I use is the command it exacttly the one we use to send email messages. What's wrong with it? Should I create the list in psql before I execute this command? Thanks, Arpad

Newbie question 2: Rewriting issue for bounced emails

I have installed mailman3 on a debian system with postfix and dovecot. I have gotten to the point that I can open the admin interface, set up domains and a mailinglist, and add users. I have subscribed two test users, one on the server and one on a different machine. Both got the confirmation email requests and the welcome messages. However, when I try to sent an email *to* the list from either account, I get the following error: This is the mail system at host mail.libertyfp.org. I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster. If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message. The mail system <"lmtp:[mail.libertyfp.org]:8024"@libertyfp.org> (expanded from <fplist(a)libertyfp.org>): unknown user: "lmtp:[mail.libertyfp.org]:8024@libertyfp.org" Apparently, fplist(a)libertyfp.org is getting rewritten to 8024(a)libertyfp.org. Help with Newbie error -- I think I deleted my server

I have recently installed mailman3 on a Debian system with Posftix and Dovecot. I did it directly and did not use the docker setup. I managed to get it working to the point that I could send mail locally and outside my domain through mailman and log in as administrator. I decided to add a domain, but noticed on the form that the server was called "example.com." Clearly, I thought, I missed a configuration item here. I clicked on that, and it took me to a page where I could add servers. So, I added my real domain (libertyfp.org) It successfully added it, so I decided that I clearly didn't need "example.com" as a server, and deleted it using the same page. Immediately, I got an "internal server error" and have now lost all web interfaces. I tried restarting the daemons and rebooting the box, to no avail. The error message sent to my admin email is shown below. So... I have a couple of questions: 1) How can I set libertyfp.org as my server by use of a config file? 2) Failing that, how do a add "example.com" back, since I no longer have the web interface? I can't believe I did this. It took me a week to get this up and working, and I destroyed it in ten minutes after it was working. Any help would be appreciated. I suppose reinstalling will go much more quickly, since I know the mistakes I made over the past few days, but I really don't want to do that... The corresponding list for Mailman 2.1 is https://mail.python.org/mailman3/lists/mailman-users.python.org/ That said, your issue is because the list is adding a message footer (or possibly header or both) to the delivered message. This is discussed in the FAQ at https://wiki.list.org/x/4030707 That FAQ says there are Mailman configuration things you can do. Exactly what you do depends on the requirements of your list and whether this is Mailman 2.1 or Mailman 3. If you don't require that HTML or other non plain text parts be delivered, you can adjust content filtering to remove them and create a simple plain text message which won't have this problem. Or you can ensure that no message header/footer is added. This is possibly unrelated to Mailman, and possibly happening because Outlook.com and Hotmail are both owned by Microsoft, and both are flagging your server as a spam source. You can verify this by checking your mail server's logs. Usually a big service like Hotmail or Gmail will embed a URL in the error message where you can go to apply to be whitelisted. If this is the problem, you may need to take additional steps (again outside of Mailman3) to be a good email server citizen, such as adding DKIM and SPF records in your domain's DNS. Unless you have both, Microsoft or Google may block your server. It might also be a Mailman problem, but since some subscribers do get postings, I'd start with this first. dn

Postorius fails to show list because of a large message being held

Hi, Recently a member of one of our private lists sent a message with a picture attached. Because of the large message size (23MB) it was put into the moderation queue. But since then postorius fails to open the list's page with this error: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. list footer web customization procedure

I am new to Mailman 3 and I've been reading all the documentation that I could find, but I haven't been able to figure out how a list owner can use the web interface to customize the footer that appears at the end of each e-mail from the list. We're actually after something much simpler (in theory), which is to eliminate the built-in footer altogether for some of our lists. Could someone share the instructions for doing that? Thanks.

Can lists set to be viewable on the index page be limited to the virtual domain they are a part of? Let's say I have two virtual domains: lists.dom1.tld lists.dom2.tld Currently, if any list in either domain is set to be viewable on the index page, it's viewable in both domains, not just the one it's a part of. How to restrict access on a per-domain basis? I searched the archives and found something about disabling archives per domain [1], but that's a different question. This seems like a standard problem and may have been asked a different way before, and I may have missed it. Strange problem in user lists

Hi, I have a strange problem in one list. when I add a memebr I use the form "Name Surname" <email(a)domain.tld> I cant' understand why, but I have two members with the wrong name. "A B" <C(a)dom.tld> "D E" <F(a)dom.tld> My problem is that A and B must be associated with F(a)dom.tld and vice-versa. I tried to delete the user member and recreate it, but it has always the wrong name. Is it possible to correct those errors? How? Thanks in advance -- Gelpi ing. Hyperkitty - 'MySQL server has gone away'

I just deployed Mailman3 last night. This is the first error message I've encountered from Hyperkitty. It looks like a MySQL configuration issue. I've done some tuning to the wait/timeouts but I'm still getting the error message. I suspect the root cause is the size of the message. mailman qfile shows the message has 84746 lines and the .pck file is 6.9M. Let me know if there's more specific tuning that needs to be done to cover larger messages. Lookup Table Questions

Hello, I am currently working on upgrading our Mailman system from Mailman 3.3.1 to Mailman 3.3.5. Our configuration utilizes containers that run on Alpine Linux. While working on updating the containers I noticed that the recent version of Alpine has dropped support for Berkeley DB lookup tables. Due to this change I think our only option is to switch over from using hash tables to regexp tables (or switch the OS the containers are running on). In addition, while I was working on the updates I realized that even though the Berkeley DB support has been dropped Mailman seems to work ok with the new default lookup table for Postfix on Alpine: LMDB. I was hoping to get a few answers to some of the questions I have with regards to the options we have moving forward. Any help is greatly appreciated! - The Mailman documentation notes that either hash or regexp tables are supported. Is it ok to use LMDB or will I run into issues at some point? - If LMDB tables are not a good idea to use, are there any drawbacks to switching over to regexp tables? My main concern is that we currently have 7000+ mailing lists, and I'm worried that switching over to regexp may result in slower lookups. I am also wondering if there are potential issues if the 'mailman aliases' command is run simultaneously alongside another 'mailman aliases' command. In the past it seems like the hash table was locked (which was good), and I'm not sure if this behavior is kept by moving over to regexp. missing graphics in Postorius

After installing MM3 on Debian 10 using the venv docs, no graphics appear in the admin or list pages, just broken links. The mailmanweb log has lines like this: ERROR 2021-12-07 06:04:10,002 18262 django.security.DisallowedHost Invalid HTTP_HOST header: '127.0.0.1'. You may need to add '127.0.0.1' to ALLOWED_HOSTS. which is odd because there is the line for "localhost" in settings.py, and /etc/hosts correctly ties this to 127.0.0.1. mailman-web migrate fails: KeyError: 'django'

Following the venv installation docs on a Debian 10 system, the command "mailman-web migrate" fails with a "KeyError: 'django'" error. Output pasted below [1]. There's an earlier thread on this error [2] but I think the cause may be different. Even so, per Mark Sapiro's suggestion I changed STATIC_ROOT to /opt/mailman/mm/var/static in settings.py. In mailman.cfg, var_dir is at the default setting of /opt/mailman/mm/var/static. I previously had tried creating /opt/mailman/mm/web/logs and chown'ing it to mailman, but "mailman-web migrate" failed with the same error. FWIW, mailman-web and hyperkitty installation initially failed with the suggesting that I upgrade pip, which I did using " pip install --upgrade pip". Sender: header

MM2 adds the header "Sender: LISTNAME-bounces@DOMAIN" to messages sent to list members. That causes Outlook (among others?) to display the "originator" of a message from a REAL POSTER as: LISTNAME-bounces@DOMAIN on behalf of REAL POSTER <REAL.POSTER@DOMAIN> That phrasing helps identify instantly what list a message is coming from, when that list doesn't use a Subject prefix and when its address isn't in the To: or Cc: headers. (And it turned out that some of our list members were even relying on it to trigger security alerts!) It doesn't look like there's any current MM3 setting that would accomplish the same result, so the question is: How difficult would it be to revive the Sender: header? I admit that I didn't read all 285 Mailman-users search results for query "Sender:", so apologies if that had been discussed before. Thanks.

We're getting closer to migrating from Mailman 2 to Mailman 3. In preparation, I want to get new servers built ready to accept the migrated data from our old MM2 servers before we shut them down. So, the new servers will be something like "new-lists.example.com" to complement the existing "lists.example.com" servers. When we are ready to do the migration, we'll rename the MM2 servers to "old-lists" and rename the MM3 servers to "lists" and then migrate the data. Looking at the settings in the Django admin interface, I *thought* I had figure out how best to do this: - Under /admin/sites/site/, click on the existing domain name and change it to match the correct FQDN. - Under /admin/django_mailman3/maildomain/, click on the exist mail domain and change the mail domain to match the correct FQDN. However, although the above works, if I then go back to the *Mailman* interface and go to /mailman3/domains/, the web interface recreates a domain for the original domain name that was in place when the server was created, i.e. we end up with "lists" and "new-lists". We've tried deleting that "new-lists" domain, rebooting and trying again but "new-lists" keeps on being created again. What am I overlooking here? Is there a better/approved way to achieve what we want to achieve? Thanks. Philip

I added the additional hosts to ALLOWED HOSTS in settings_local.py and mailman is distributing mail to subscribers again. However, I then received many emails of valid users subscriptions being disabled. What would cause that? Can subscriber management be done via command line?

Is post-installation documentation available for a full Mailman3 installation on a new Debian 11 machine? I am looking for a high-level "do these steps next to get a list working" document rather than an API command reference. I followed the venv documentation and the installation went ok, but still have questions about what to do next, e.g.: - why do the venv docs and admin FAQ give different nginx configs for the reverse proxy? https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/faq.html#confirmation-emails-to-users-h… https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#nginx-configura… - Does the 'Secret_Hyperkitty_API_Key' need to go anywhere else besides /opt/mailman/mm/mailman-hyperkitty.cfg? - For Django (presumably in /etc/mailman3/settings.py, but the docs don't say), what values to use with Postfix to set up the email back end? Hyperkitty messages stuck in spool

Hi. I am seeing an issue whereby messages get stuck in the /opt/mailman/var/archives/hyperkitty/spool directory. I can sometimes clear these by restarting mailman-web and sending another message through to the list but I am having trouble identifying the root cause. This is something that started happening moving to a new host running latest Debian. Using venv rather than Debian packages. Any suggestions? Thanks. Andrew.

Dear all, after upgrading his Mac to MacOS 12.0.1 Monterey, one of our users can not send send signed messages to lists using Apple Mail v. 15.0 (3693.20.0.1.32). mailman3 denys the delivery of the mail with error message: host 172.19.0.4[172.19.0.4] said: 501 Message has defects (in reply to end of DATA command) I.e. mailman does not process the message, but rejects it already in the incoming smtp session. Is that a known issue? Bulk update of members' moderation settings

I imported a list from mailman 2.1 using https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html. It happens that emergency moderation was set on the mailman 2.1 list, and this has resulted in all members having Moderation set to Hold. I now want to change that to Default Processing for all members. Is there a way to achieve that in bulk without clicking through the members options for each member in Postorius? Thanks, Alex

Race condition when mass subscribing same email addresses to two lists?

We are testing the latest Mailman core 3.3.5 and Postorius 1.3.6. My colleagues reported that some email addresses cannot subscribe to the lists when two of them are using mass subscribe feature to add email addresses to the list. Then I try whether I can repeat the same issue. I did this: 1) Create two lists with default setting 2) Prepare a list of 1000 fresh email addresses not added to the system before 3) Mass subscribe both lists of these 1000 email addresses around the same time with all three Pre (confirm, approved, verified) checked There are quite a lot of similar errors in mailman.log. Did not study the code yet. Which part is causing the issue? Bug in 2.1.36?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or something about the new CSRF fix doesn't get along with something I have (mis)configured, but this definitely seems to be related. Sadly the script I use to backup mailman before upgrading I recently stopped backing up the lists themselves, so going back to 2.1.35 doesn't seem to be an option due to the .pck file version bump. Filtering signed mails

Dear all, today I recived a user complain that his messages were rejected with error "The message's content type was not explicitly allowed" I checked the list and indeed, it was configured to filter content and to allow only a very limited number of content types, namely application/pdf and image/jpeg. After some experiments, the problems seems to be the s/mime signature. The messages contain a signature: <snip> Content-Type: application/x-pkcs7-signature; name="smime.p7s" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="smime.p7s" <snap> I added this type to the allowed MIME content type, but signed messages are still rejected. Moderation Action Changed After Import

I migrated a Mailman 2 list using import21 and the list's config.pck into a Mailman 3 list. The list owner reported back that about 98% of the list members had their moderation setting changed to Reject (with notification). He said the previous moderation was the list's default which was hold for moderation. Is such a thing possible with an import job? Issues with cross posted emails after upgrading to mailman 3.3.6

Since upgrading from 3.3.4 to 3.3.6 we are seeing a high instance of emails that are sent to 2 lists (EG 2 campuses). One campus will get the email and the other campus will get an email that just contains "The content of this message was lost. It was probably cross-posted to multiple lists and previously handled on another list.” Is this something new in 3.3.6? I’m trying to work out what’s going on and why it would be lost. I deployed Mailman3 last night and today we've had some "bounced" messages with headers referencing mailman(a)example.com. This has only happened with a few lists. Any ideas what causes this? We are using an SMTP relay server for incoming and outgoing messages in front of the Mailman3 service. Thanks! Mailman Suite installation on CentOS 7

Hello! I want to install fresh Mailman, which is combined with hyperkitty+postorius. After checking documentation i found, that Mailman Suite is perfect for me. But i have some misunderstandings about installation. I only found this part in documentation, which explains how to clone and start using Mailman Suite (https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/devsetup.html#run-the-mailman-suite-com…) But am i correct, that before doing so, i need to install mailman core, mailman client, django-mailman3 ? Or what would be the correct steps to build up my first Mailman Suite on CentOS? Br, Kimmo

Hello, after correcting little discrepancies within the mm3 configuration proposals in the debian buster package and the help of Mark I am very pleased with it now. BTW: There is a very helpfull instruction for installing other mail components like dovecot/postfix/etc on https://workaround.org/ispmail/buster/ actually not yet for bullseye, but my experience is: it will come soon. So I dont understand the discussions like: "hands off debian mm3 packages". Here is my question: What do I have to configure to get my lists to show the sender like in this list: Wolfgang Bock via Mailman-users mailman-users(a)mailman3.org <mailto:mailman-users@mailman3.org> I tried several combinations but failed upto now. mailman3 admin from mailman2 & File location questions

Question1 We use help users with list settings, so we would log into mailman2 with the master password. So what is the best way to duplicate this for mailman3. I assume I can just use the admin account and share that password with my other admins. But I see the domain owners, but is that working? I added someone as a domain owner, and they do not see private email lists and it looks like that can not edit any list settings? There was a post that this had not yet been implemented? Any other options? Question2 Where are all the emails/archives stored? are they in /opt/mailman/...., or are they in the database? For mailman2 we had mailman located on a large volume to handle archives, just trying to see if that is the same for mailman3 or if all the data is now in the database (which will be external for our installation)?

So just want to make sure I have the latest information after searching this list and googling or have I missed something? It appears there is no way in mailman3 to delete archives. There has been discussion on implementing this, but it has not been developed? is that correct? Mailman notify generating emails for request that aren't visible.

Hi, We’re running mailman 3.3.4 (about to upgrade to 3.3.5 this week). I enabled mailman notify cron a few weeks ago to email out any pending requests for admins. I’ve now got multiple lists that keep emailing out the same outstanding holds but they can’t visible in the GUI. The requests are all duplicates as well. Question about Digest mode

We upgraded to MM3 from MM2 this past Summer. A number of our users are asking if they cannot still get digests delivered once per day instead of being delivered when the accumulated posts reach a specified size. Is there a way to set digests to go out once per day? Terry Earley FitEyes.com
