I have migrated from MM2 to MM3. However, writing HTML is not one of my strengths. I need to edit my MM2 listinfo page to: a. Remove everything below the "Subscribing to LISTNAME" heading and below that add a link to the new http://WEBSERVER/accounts/signup/ which ideally should open on a new browser tab. b. Hello, I've recently installed MM3 with Exim4 on, say, subdomain.myhost.tld and configured MM3 to use lists.someotherdomain.tld as web host and mail host. Thus, the mailman.cfg contains: [mta] smtp_host: lists.someotherdomain.tld When I send a message to test(a)lists.someotherdomain.tld it gets delivered, however the 'From:'-header becomes "test(a)subdomain.myhost.tld".

Attack on Mailman Server?

I had some attacks on my wordpress homepage today, I added some IPs to the blacklist of my firewall. Permissions issue after upgrade of virtualenv

Ola, So I installed a new virtualenv using Python3.11, kept all settings intact, copied /opt/mailman/mmvar from the old virtualenv to the new one. Hi guys, I have recently started receiving these mails from the system. First it was frighting me out that people's account got disabled, but actually nothing has happened, nobody got disabled. I however looking to figure out how can I control or change settings for this particular mechanism. Please advise me. emailname(a)example.it's subscription has been disabled on listname(a)domain.eu due to their bounce score exceeding the mailing list's bounce_score_threshold. Regards, Tibor

Has MM3 been tested with Python3.11? I updated a Debian VM to Python3.11, installed MM3 and migrated the configs. Question about the smtp log (rotation)

I have been asked to take over the management of the mailman3 servers as the prior admin left little documentation. One of the first things I need to do is optimize the logging. Currently the mailman.log is being rotated and zipped by user list and kept 5 day. (this is fine but would like to increase it some) But the smtp log has not been rotated since August (also created by user list) I cannot seem to find what process does this and how I can modify it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Archiver Hyperkitty Not Found

Hello, I upgraded from Debian 10 to 11 today, and hyperkitty archiver stopped working. From the mailman.log: AssertionError: Archiver not found: hyperkitty I followed along on a related thread: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… I don't see any resolution to that thread. The only thing that worked for me was removing the hyperkitty rows from the listarchiver table in the database. URLs in moderation messages

Hi, I’ve clearly got something wrong in my configuration, but I can’t work out what. All my URLs seem to have the “mailman3” part duplicated, i.e. Https://example.com/mailman3/mailman3/lists Is where I have to go to get a list of my mailing lists, which just doesn’t seem right. In my settings.py file I have: POSTORIUS_TEMPLATE_BASE_URL = 'https://example.com/mailman3/' If I change the value of this to just https://example.com/ it doesn’t change this, Where have I gone wrong? Hi! The error above occurs when starting mailman. The xxxx shows a part from the database section of mailman.cfg. I followed the tutorial https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Howto_Install_Mailman3_On_Debian10. But since django and postgres changed some things, I had to fix some files of mailman3 to get it working. This is the part of mailman.cfg: [database] class: mailman.database.postgresql.PostgreSQLDatabase url: postgresql://mailman:<mypassword>@localhost/mailman Full error: sqlalchemy.exc.OperationalError: (psycopg2.OperationalError) could not translate host name "assword>@localhost" to address: Name or service not known How can I fix this? Postfix problem with imported Mailman2 list

I installed and tested Mailman3. I imported a Mailman2 list. All looks good but I get this error. Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table; from=<hit(a)options.org> to=<atm(a)alist.net> The aliases seem to show up find in the GUI for the control panel software I use. Postfix virual file has a mapping of atm to atm(a)alist.net . It seems mailman at least sees the connection. Messages not picking up header or footer template

Hi I can't figure out how to get headers or footers on my messages Example: I create a footer in Postorius. The name in the form is '[list:member:regular:footer] - The footer for a regular (non-digest) message.' The data is 'Test Footer' I can see the entry in the database with the uri: http://localhost:8000/mailman3/api/templates/list/testing.comms.sdcvirginia… I can do a wget on that uri and download a copy of the footer, and it looks right But when I send a message to the list and the message is forwarded, the footer isn't on the messages that members receive Looking at mailman.log, I cannot see any attempt to access the footer. I can see connections to the REST API (config, roster/owner, roster/moderator) that correspond to the time I sent the message So what am I doing wrong? Thank you Ben

Error downloading CSV for 1,300 members

Any suggestions on troubleshooting downloading a modest-size CSV file for a list with 1,300 members? Multi-domain oddities in Hyperkitty and Postorius

In the OpenDev Collaboratory we've got a bunch of separate Mailman 2.1 vhosts we've started migrating into a single Mailman 3.3.7 server, desiring to take full advantage of its improved multi-domain support. For the most part everything is working great (kudos to everyone who maintains the software and documentation, it's excellent). One of the things our users noticed fairly quickly was Hyperkitty on the second vhost was incorrectly showing the FQDN of the first vhost near the top of its pages. This is covered in the FAQ of course, and seems to imply that what we want is to switch the SITE_ID from 1 to 0 in our settings.py in order to take advantage of magic domain-guessing behavior. So far so good. Unfortunately, SITE_ID = 0 seems to explicitly require the addition of "mail hosts" (or "mail domains" from Django's perspective), and all the web routing returns error pages for any list sites besides the first one since, by default, our server did not have these predefined. What's odd is that, if I log into Postorius as admin and visit the "manage domains" page, suddenly the database gets populated with mail hosts for all of the FQDNs associated with our imported mailing lists. I would not have expected merely visiting that page as an admin to have a side effect of adding entries for the "missing" mail hosts, is that an intentional behavior or merely a bug? Once these entries are automatically added by visiting that page, they're all associated with the one "web host" ("site" in Django) we have for the server, and now the list filtering functionality in Postorius breaks and any of the vhosts all display the full set of mailing lists on the server rather than only those associated with a particular vhost (note that this seems to only be confusing Postorius, Hyperkitty has them correctly filtered still). Okay, so it looks like this is because the mail hosts are all tied to the one web host. We can create additional "sites" in the Django admin UI and then switch the association of the mail hosts to those distinct web hosts. But after doing so, the first vhost still seems to show an unfiltered list of all lists in Postorius (Hyperkitty continues to be fine), while Postorius on the other vhosts correctly shows their filtered sets of lists instead. I also noticed when mailman-web is starting up, its log claims the first site is being set as the "default domain," so have to wonder if that's related to this behavior. Should we create an extra web host to serve as the "default" so that all our typical vhosts get the expected list filtering behavior, or am I completely off-base and there's a much better approach I've missed? Sorry this is so long, I feel like I have at most a tenuous grasp of the details and variables involved, but hopefully it makes sense to someone. Multiple domain problem

Hi, list! I have lists on two domains, example1.com and example2.com. The mail interface works perfectly. However, connecting a browser to example1.com, I get the title List index - example1.com, and the web interface seems to work fine. If I connect to example2.com, the title is example2.com, without the preceding List index. And the body says Page not found. I can't find anything in the logs that tells me the reason. SITE_ID is set to 0. Any idea? Thanks in advance, Lars

Installed but mailman reports missing hyperkitty module

I've opted for the Mailman3 package installation on Ubuntu 22 LTS on top of a manually installed Mailman3 core package from the Ubuntu 20 Debian repository. Everything is working great on my installation. However, if I try to enable hyperkitty in /etc/mailman.cfg postorius reports 500 status codes on all pages. /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log reports this error: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'mailman3_hyperkitty' Any idea why postorius can't seem to find the installed hyperkitty module? settings sanity check

Does mailman-web do sanity checks in settings.py? Dear all, in Mailman2, the email that is sent out to the subscriber for them to confirm their subscription contained a clickable URL. In mailman 3, the default templace for this action doesn't have this option. Is the functionality still there but has to be added to the template? If so, what is the scheme? Thanks! Johannes

changeaddress command and nonmembers

I recently upgraded a Mailman 2 installation (which included a number of email lists) to Mailman 3.3.3. There is one human user who in the past has used two different email addresses. Let's call them oldaddress(a)hotmail.com and newaddress(a)gmail.com. This person used to participate on an email list using oldaddress(a)hotmail.com (both posting and receiving). He then unsubscribed oldaddress(a)hotmail.com from the list and then subscribed to the email list as newaddress(a)gmail.com. All of this happened while using Mailman 2. Now that we're on Mailman 3 and the email list was migrated from MM2 to MM3, we see that newaddress(a)gmail.com is a Member of the list, and we see that oldaddress(a)hotmail.com is a NonMember of the list. That all makes sense. But now, this person has decided that they actually want to go back to using the old address. So I ran the command "mailman changeaddress newaddress(a)gmail.com oldaddress(a)hotmail.com". But that gave me this output: Usage: mailman changeaddress [OPTIONS] OLD_ADDRESS NEW_ADDRESS Try 'mailman changeaddress -h' for help. Error: Address oldaddress(a)hotmail.com already exists; can't change. Can anyone explain how I can do what I'm trying to accomplish? (Also, why is this error displaying the usage message? That seems odd, since the number and type of arguments was correct.)

Improve logging?

Some entries in the log files can be very scary, while in actual sense they are harmless. Such inconsequential, but scary entiess can mess up the well-being of a SysAdmin. MM3 to MM3 migration

I’m looking to migrate several mailing lists from one server running MM3/Django/Hyperkitty to another. Same operating system and python environment and venvs for both. Although the canonical hostnames for the two servers will differ, I can use the same hostnames for lists once I’ve got everything set up. Is this really as simple as building the new server, creating the same lists on the new server, and rsync’ing the archives from the old server? If not, how to do the migration? I checked the archives and saw many threads on MM2 -> MM3, but did not see anything on MM3 migration. Thanks in advance. dn

we're using debian/devuan with distribution-mailman3 and tried to add admin/mod for a list, but if logging in as this user, there's no item to manage the list at all. do we have to add this user as member of this list? (that wouldn't be nice, because the user doesn't want to get normal Mails from List, but only admin-Mails) regards omf

New Installation of MM3 is not archiving

Greetings, I finally completed installation of Mailman 3 following the instructions here: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#initial-configu… I got a lot of support from this mailing-list too and I am mighty grateful for that. My new MM3 instance does not seem to be archiving. List subscribers are currently sending and receiving mails on their subscribed lists. However, none of the correspondence is showing up at https://mailing-list-site.tld/archives/. That page shows a listing of the active mailing-lists with '0 participants' and '0 discussions'. Whereas, those lists contain mails. How do I troubleshoot this?

About to Install MM3 -- Seeking clarification

Good Morning Everyone, I installed and managed mailman 2 for about two years. I am now ready to try Mailman 3. The documentation for version 2 was lucid and this forum was quite helpful in the past. Now I'd like to proceed with installating MM3 but I doubt my understanding of the docs. It seems to assume that users will know what to do. Okay, don't laugh! I just want to be sure what I am doing. Does the following sequence resemble the proper steps? 1. Download the source from a git repo (I understood that one) 2. Create a virtual environment (venv perhaps ... not stated explicitly) 3. activate the virtual environment 4. from the git project root, run: ./mailman start I know, its stupid. I had to ask. It would really build my confidence someone would confirm the above steps or counter then with something very explicit. What about process ownership? Do I need to have a unix mailman user? What else do I need to get mailman up and running before proceeding to configuration. Ahaa! I perused the config docs a bit. Where can I find the .cfg file? The docs for their equivalent of the kernel syscall interface, when printed (two-sided) and stacked, would easily approach 2 meters tall. Yet, every bit of it was incomprehensible unless and until you called the developer and had them explain it to you. The problem that we all have, us humans, is that when we are very familiar with something, like the code we've been working on, it is very hard to describe its purpose to somebody who knows nothing about it. ("It's obvious to me, so it should be obvious to you."). So, a challenge for us all: When writing and reviewing your documentation, imagine that you're explaining your whole project face-to-face to your grandmother, or to anybody who never learned to program. From experience I promise that it's easy once you get the hang of it. EMWD/Affinity/Empathy in 2023

Hi all, We're exploring Mailman 3 and the custom interfaces provided by EMWD's Affinity and Empathy look very interesting: https://www.mailmanhost.com/affinity-mailman/ However, I saw reports of EMWD being a one-man show and the owner sadly passing away in 2021; but I've also seen threads here referring to the Affinity and Empathy projects in 2022. It wasn't clear to me if EMWD is still an active business and Affinity and Empathy are still active offerings. Does anyone here have any direct contact/relationship/experience with EMWD/Affinity/Empathy following the owner's passing? Or knowledge of any other offerings publicly available today that are similar to Affinity/Empathy? Thanks!

Can't see held messages

Hi everybody, I've a new installation in my own vps. Everything works if I set "Deliver immediately" but if I turn on the "hold for moderation" I can't see the mails in web interface and I can't confirm the delivery or discard. What information do you need to help me?

Dear Users & Developers, we're running MM3 on Ubuntu 22 and used the venv-installation method. Last week we updated via¹ to Mailman Core-Version GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer) Mailman Core API-Version 3.1 Mailman Core Python-Version 3.10.6 (main, Nov 14 2022, 16:10:14) [GCC 11.3.0] and now mailman attaches mime-attachments to email as text-files. That breaks many mails in our environment. For example: Now we have attachments like smime.p7s + ATT000001.txt as well as what looks like MM footers "mailing list --- test@domain ... To unsubscripbe send an email to ..." How can we get the "old" processing back? Thank you alot. Stefan

Localisation of web interface gone after OS upgrade

Dear all, I just upgraded our server from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04. Mailman is installed in virtualenv, so it shouldn't be affected by the upgrade. Am I right about that? However, the strange thing is that most, albeit not all of the localisation is gone, the web interface is now mostly in English. Still, I reinstalled venv, mailman and hyperkitty, but no change. I also re-ran the four commands * mailman-web migrate * mailman-web collectstatic * mailman-web compress * mailman-web compilemessages just to be sure, but that didn't change things either. Is there something in Ubuntu 22.04 that kills the localisation? Thanks! Johannes

Mailman 2.1 has a cleanarch script for checking mbox files for unescaped `From `lines in message bodies and optionally fixing them. For some time, there has been a stand-alone python3 version of this script at https://www.msapiro.net/scripts/cleanarch3 (mirrored at https://fog.ccsf.edu/~msapiro/scripts/cleanarch3) I have just updated this script to check and optionally fix bad Date: headers. Using it with the "smtp2go" email relay service that has special deliverability rules

Hi, Smtp2Go relay service enforces a few rules for deliverability: The From: address domain has to be verified in smtp2go The sender envelope address also has to be verified in smtp2go So emails sent by mailman don't get relayed because mailman sets From: to be the original sender of the message, and it means anyone that wants to send to the list would have to approve themselves with smtp2go first, which is not workable. To make it work, I would have to have something like: Sender: bounce-address(a)lists.mailman3.org - untouched From: original.sender@gmail.com@lists.mailman3.org - change #1 having the From address to be From the list Reply-To: original.sender(a)gmail.com - change #2 - if someone replies Then smtp2go will send the email. I looked in the settings and I didn't find a readily available option to do that. I'm new to customizing mailman3 , but have been using it in production for a little more than 1 year. I've seen other software do the solution proposed above, namely DIvi contact forms set the "From" to be something @website.com and the Reply-To: as the form submitter. I am told that the standards is moving away from forging the DATA From: that doesn't have a predictable domain, and instead put the variable email address in Reply-To, for things like contact forms or automated sending. Can someone guide me on where I could start looking?

mailman-web causing constant 100% cpu load of mysqld

Dear all, with mailmanweb running, the CPU load of mysqld constantly hovers around 100% In /var/log/mysql/errors.log I see repeatedly: 2023-01-13 17:22:42 27198 [Warning] Aborted connection 27198 to db: 'mailman_core' user: 'mailman' host: 'localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets) 2023-01-13 17:27:43 29621 [Warning] Aborted connection 29621 to db: 'mailman_core' user: 'mailman' host: 'localhost' (Got an error reading communication packets) This also seems to affect other services such as dovecot which rely on mysql and at times can't connect to it. Error Logging - what changed with the New Year releases?

Apart from all the defaults in settings.py (derived from gitlab), I also have this line: LOGGING['handlers']['file']['filename'] = '/opt/mailman/mm/var/logs/mailmanweb.log' Before the New Year releases of MM3, I used to get errors written to this file. Not anymore after I updated to the New Year releases. Another thing that I have realized is that prior to the New Year releases, I would get an error logged to that file and also mailed to me. I don't think that I have changed anything in settings,py related to logging. I have been trying to get signup with Twitter working. This used to generate an error that was both logged and emailed, but that isn't happening anymore. I have enabled other social auth providers (in settings.py) which I haven't configured in the admin panel. I expect that tying to use these on Postorius would generate an error that is logged and mailed to admin, but that too is not happening.
