Moderation request email from a non existing user

Every day mailman (MM 3.3.3 (Tom Sawyer)) sends me an email with a held unsubcription request from X user. This user is not subcribed to that list anymore but every day an email is sending to the list owner. On the web interface there's nothing pending for approval or similar. Is there anyway to avoid receiving this anoyning email every day? Thanks in advance. David

Hi I am struggling with Mainman3 to get it running on Debian11 On a clean VPS I have up and running Apache, mysql and postfix Also the installation mailman3 went fine for the mailman3-full package Then I setup mailman3-web via dpkg-reconfigure mailman3-web, modify in mailman-hyperkitty.cfg MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY. In mailman.config add the [archiver.hyperkitty] things At this point I made a clone for the VPS. On clone 1 I import a mailman2 list: mailman create test(a)xxx.nl mailman import21 test@xxx /peter/mailman/lists/test/config.pck /usr/share/mailman3-web/manage.py hyperkitty_import -l test(a)xxx.nl /peter/mailman/archives/private/test.mbox/test.mbox /usr/share/mailman3-web/manage.py update_index So far so good. I can access the list and its config via the web page,see 1 subscriber (me :-) and can walk though the archive. How to authorise members visibility?

Hello, My setup: - Debian 11 - Mailman3-full v 3.3.3-1 My Question: How to configure the visibility of a list of subscribers to a list? I created a list and set "subscriber visibility" to subscribers only. When I log in as such and try to view the list information, I can't see anywhere how to display that list. It's the same regardless of the setting used for this "subscriber visibility" field (only moderators, only subscribers or anyone). Is this normal? Is there something I misunderstood? Hi all, after fixing an exim issue (now getting cron messages), I’m spammed by these e-mails: - - - /usr/local/py_venv/mailman_33/lib/python3.9/site-packages/readme_renderer/markdown.py:44: UserWarning: Markdown renderers are not available. Install 'readme_renderer[md]' to enable Markdown rendering. warnings.warn(_EXTRA_WARNING) - - - I installed cmarkgfm 0.8.0 in my venv, but this did not help. Importing users and mas settings "Moderation Action"

I imported email lists and users to version 3 from version 2. One of my lists all the users are set to 'Hold for moderation" for "Moderation Action". I assume this is because they were set to moderation on mailman 2? But if I mass subscribe users via the Gui in mailman 3 then their default "Moderation Action" is set to "none" so I assume it follows list default, is that a correct assumption? I believe there is no way to import mass users and set their "Moderation Action" at the same time is this correct? Wasn't that possible in mailman 2? is there a way to change all their user's "Moderation Action" for a list in bulk? So it looks like for any users I mass subscribe, "Moderation Action" will be set to "none" and if I want to change that I have to do it manually for each user?

Mailman2 allowed me to list my members and modify a number of their attributes (display_name, etc) Postorius is a beautiful interface BUT I am evidently not finding how to manage my members to the extent that I could in Mailman2 Am I missing something?

Dear mailman-experts, we're running Mailman Core Version 3.3.5 Mailman Core API Version 3.1 Mailman Core Python Version 3.10.4 on Ubuntu 22 with a python venv. Until now, I modified several files manually to adjust mailmans behavior and have to check several boxes when new lists are created. Is this still the only way to go or are there ways i can make all this more update "save" and kind of default settings? a, I removed content of /opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.10/site-packages/mailman/templates/de/list:member:generic:footer.txt b, I set ... in /opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.10/site-packages/mailman/styles/base.py mlist.default_member_action = Action.discard mlist.default_nonmember_action = Action.discard mlist.subscription_policy = SubscriptionPolicy.moderate mlist.send_welcome_message = False mlist.archive_policy = ArchivePolicy.never c, I always have to check the follwing manually in mailman web-interface on new lists: Settings-->List Idendity -> remove Subject Prefix Settings-->Message Acceptance -> accept immediately DMARC-Mitigation -> replace from ... unconditionally YES Thank you. Upgrade-path from Ubuntu18LTS to recent mailman release

Dear Users, we are very happy mailman3-users but suffer from very old packages in Ubuntu 18LTS. Unfortunately due to some python-restrictions¹, mailman3 is broken in Ubuntu20LTS and gone² in Ubuntu 22LTS, so we do not have any working upgrade-path :/ What do you recommend? Hi All, thanks for your contibution to opensource softwares. I have done the installation walkthrough on the wiki page (thanks to Brian Carpenter) and I am almost there. I can run the three services and they provide the relevant web interfaces (admin, postorius, hyperkitty). In comparison to the walkthrough, I did two changes; First, I used different port numbers , as it would otherwise conflict with other services on the server. Second, I disabled the social accounts authentification mechanisms. I am still running on sqllite, as I am still testing things (one task at a time). Using my "superuser" credentials, I can log to the admin section in a fraction of a second. The server response time is less than one second. Once logged in, I can navigate through all the site as an authenticated user, including in the postorius pages related to list management. The services work normally. However, if logout and attempt to login from the postorius website, I get a « 502 bad gateway » error after roughly 30 seconds. The logs in Systemctl for gunicorn register a "DIGEST-MD5 common mech free" error message and the nginx error logs just show a connection drop: 2021/08/12 18:11:09 [error] 26026#26026: *31 upstream prematurely closed connection while reading response header from upstream, client: [ip redacted], server: [domain redacted], request: "POST /accounts/login/ HTTP/2.0", upstream: "http://127.0.0.1:8006/accounts/login/", host: "[domain redacted]", referrer: "https://[domain redacted]/accounts/login/?next=/mailman3/lists/" Two additional clues may help understanding what is going on: 1- If I attempt to login with improper credentials, the services respond normally, and I get the expected red box with "invalid credentials" message on the postorius page. It is only when proper credentials are given that the connection fails. 2- If I attempt to register a new email adress, the services also fail to respond (although with no DIGEST-MD5 message registered). It thus seems to be a post "POST" problem, but what puzzles me is that it is not an issue for the admin page. Below the relevant sections of my settings.py page. How can I remove anything added by Mailman 3 to the forwarded email

I need to use Mailman 3 exclusively for forwarding emails to my customers divided by type. The emails must arrive exactly as they are, without any additions, and the lists are managed only by me: the customer ignores that he is subscribed to a list and receives the message as if it were one to one. How can I remove anything added by Mailman 3 to the forwarded message, therefore also the links for managing my membership (unsubscribe and modify)? Thanks a lot, Luca

Pb with archive display

Hello, We have a fully installed mailman3 on our Debian 11 (mailman3-full 3.3.3-1). We imported our old mailman 2.1.29-1 lists with no real problems :-) On the other hand Mailman3 does not seem to take into account the display of the archives. The contributions are indeed in the directory "/var/lib/mailman3/archives/hyperkitty/spool" but HyperKitty does not take them into account when displayed on the Web interface. Spam in Hyperkitty archive

I have my mail server set up with spamassassin/amavis that seems to work reasonable. One particular mailing list is open for non-members, so spam is to be expected. However, even spam to this mailing list that is filtered and moved to the quarantine folder, shows up in the archive! How can I set up the spam filter so that does not happen?

add custom styles to postorius list creation menu

Hello, When creating a list via postorius, i can see 3 style appear (announce, discussion, private). Is it possible to either create a new style and add it to that list or modify one of those style ? I’m using the virtual env setup and i have been trying to manipulate via the mailman-web shell but it doesn’t work when adding a new style. I need to delegate list creation to admins and I don’t want them to have to redo every list settings for every list they create when they are the same style. Also, coming from mailman2, you could directly set the members post moderation action when subscribing, now you can only do it via the user menu, is there a way to automate this in mm3 ? Templates do not work

I created some templates in Postorius to get personalized notifications when there are moderator requests. The notifications I get seem to be the standard texts. When I look into mailman/ mm/var/templates the directory is empty. Nevertheless, the templates I create in Postorius seem to be stored (where?), they just do not work.

Localization of auto-responses, question marks in welcome message

Hi, I know there are already some posts on this subject. From reading the following seems to be the state of the affair: * the list's language settings determines which localized template to use * the list-_servers_ default setting determines which language to use for the subject (so the subject's language is a "global" server configuration setting). Still, in my Ubuntu Impish Mailman 3.3.3 installation the welcome message is sent with charset us-ascii and contains question marks for any "special" -- i.e. non-ascii -- character. Can this be changed s.t. the welcome message is correctly displayed? Problems with shunted Mails

Hi all, we currently have a problem sending to an email list. The mailing list is an announcement list and is therefore moderated. The mail also arrives for moderation. However, when the mail is released, it is not delivered, but moved to the shunt queue. set a new default for max_message_size

Hi MM Community, I guess Mark can answer this question in a split second. We want another default than 40kb for the max_message_size. I know you can change it with the mailman shell or with postorius. But we want to skip this part an set the default to 4000kb for instance. I read about the max_message_size in this thread from 2020 https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/message… According to the answer of Mark you can change the "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/mailman/styles/base.py" - mlist.max_message_size. How to delete large numbers of held messages

We had a mail loop on one of our lists and ended up with over 51k messages in pending (held due to post not form a list member) Trying to delete them from the web UI will take forever, as the largest pagination you can view is 200 at a time. Tried to delete them from the Python interactive shell, but it looks like the API times out after a while. Is there another way to delete all these unwanted held posts? Apple Mail encoding again

Starting a new thread because I don't know how to reply to this one from November 2021: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/message… A subscriber's post to a list bounced with a 501 bad encoding error. The subscriber uses Apple Mail on MacOS and PGP-signed his message. The earlier post above suggests the problem could be a bug in either Apple Mail encoding or python's smtp module. To rule out the smtp module, I sent a PGP-signed message using a different MUA (Thunderbird, in my case). Mailman3 accepted this post without complaint, and I reported back to list users that this appears to be an Apple Mail encoding issue. Normally, that'd be the end of it. But this is a list for a bunch of Internet graybeards, including one of the authors of the SMTP protocols and the subscriber is a former IETF chair. He's grumbling that if this really were an Apple Mail issue, wouldn't it be far more widespread? I don't think it would be, because (a) Mailman2 is still far more pervasive than Mailman3 and (b) the combination of PGP signing and Apple Mail on MacOS and Mailman3 is still pretty unusual. Has anyone else hit this encoding issue, other than the post above? And did Mailman2 silently accept this because it was less strict about checking for bad encoding? Thanks. dn

Hello: I installed mailman3 through docker, and I created a mailing list for testing, which can subscribe, unsubscribe, receive emails, and send emails normally. Now there are two problems that have not been resolved. I would like to ask: 1. When a user subscribes, how to configure it like "lists.mailman3.org" to send a link to confirm the subscription instead of just replying to the confirmation email. 2. I used the mailling list I created to test the sending and receiving of emails, but I didn't see any historical messages in "Archives",Where is the configuration incorrect? Prometheus mailman_exporter

Folks, I have recently been playing with Prometheus metrics, and having now coded a mailman3 Prometheus exporter in python I thought I'd mention here that it exists. It's not fancy and there is more to do. It works using the rest api. Source available at https://github.com/rivimey/mailman3_exporter Metrics exposed: 'mailman_up' (does the API /system/versions return http 200) and 'mailman_queues' (queue lengths for each queue, plus 'status' for the http status code of that query) Suggestions for other metrics would be interesting if accompanied with info on how to extract it. I'm currently contemplating including the number of 'to be moderated' messages. It would be possible to include the number of lists or domains but not sure it's useful enough to be worth the cost of fetching it. It is passed the api auth data separately. It would be better to read it from mm config: is there existing code I can call? MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY - 401 error

Hi together, I just updated one of my servers to Debian 11 and that also introduced mailman3 to the system as I was running mailman 2.1 for years before on that server. It took me a while to configure everything but I am convinced that I now have everything done properly. I am able to access the web interface of mailman3 (postorius) and also the archive (hyperkitty). I configured exim to deal with messages send to the lists. But when I try to send a message (as a member of a list) to a list I always get a 401 in mailman.log and the message that I should check if I provided MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY and if it is correct. So far, I can say that the key is the same in mailman-web.py (with single quotes) and mailman-hyperkitty.cfg (without quotes). in mailman-web.py I have: MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY = 'somesecretkeywithlotsofcharacters' and in mailman-hyperkitty I have this: api_key: somesecretkeywithlotsofcharacters I have some messages in $var_dir/archives/hyperkitty/spool but mailman qfile <messagefile> doesn't show anything that would catch my eye. So, maybe I need another pair of eyes that could take a look at my configs or someone that is turning me in the right direction and might give some hints where to look and what to check. Lessons learned and a couple little gotcha for newbies

I just finished, with great help from Mark Sapiro on the list, a new installation of mailman3. I used the instructions at https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/docs/insta… and https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html There were a couple of gotchas that I didn't see well documented. 1) I got the error django.template.library.InvalidTemplateLibrary: Invalid template library specified. ImportError raised when trying to load 'hyperkitty.templatetags.decorate': cannot import name 'escape_html' from 'mistune.scanner' (/opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.9/site- packages/mistune/scanner.py) when I ran 'mailman-web migrate' The fix was trivial: I just added the lines: from mistune.util import escape_html from mistune.util import escape_url to /opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.9/site-packages/mistune/scanner.py It's not hard to search for those definitions, but if someone doesn't know a smattering of python, it might not be obvious. 2) Similarly, migrate (using postgres) also gave the error: File "/opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.9/site- packages/django/db/backends/postgresql/utils.py", line 6, in utc_tzinfo_factory raise AssertionError("database connection isn't set to UTC") I was able to find a discusson of this one at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/68024060/assertionerror-database-connec… which had me downgrade to an older version of psycopg2-binary: pip install psycopg2-binary==2.8.6 There might be a different fix, but this worked. 3) When I ran the test "uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini" I got the error: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'settings' This was also trivially fixed by adding the path: export PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:/etc/mailman3 in /opt/mailman/.bashrc 4) Sometimes when I rebooted the machine, when I ran 'systemctl start mailman3' I'd get the error that mailman wouldn't start because the lock was stll there. I never could figure out where the lock was, so I worked around it by replacing ExecStart=/opt/mailman/venv/bin/mailman start with ExecStart=/opt/mailman/venv/bin/mailman start --force in /etc/systemd/system/mailman3.service I'm sure there's something bad about doing that, but it works for me, so far. 5) I had a problem with mail to outside people not being delivered while mail to the local host was delivered. It turned out that this was because in my mailman.cfg I had "smtp_host:my.listserver.tld when it should have been localhost. The error was "relay access denied." To fix this, I had to add my.listserver.tld to "mynetworks" in /etc/postfix/main.cf, ie change: mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 10.0.0.0/24 to mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 10.0.0.0/24 111.222.333.444 <--- my ip address However, Mark Sapiro (a God) told me this was because I had changed a line in the [mta] section of mailman.cfg. I had changed smtp_host: localhost to smtp_host: mydomain.tld Here's the thing. The reason I did this was because the instructions at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/config-core.html give this as their model: [mta] incoming: mailman.mta.postfix.LMTP outgoing: mailman.mta.deliver.deliver lmtp_host: mail.example.com lmtp_port: 8024 smtp_host: mail.example.com <---- not localhost smtp_port: 25 The instructions are good, but there are a few places where one size does not fit all, I guess. 6) A second error in delivery to outside addresses resulted in an "Access denied" error. A search on the internet revealed that this had to do with (for me) smtpd_recipient_restrictions in postfix. See, for instance: https://know.mailsbestfriend.com/postfix_error_relay_access_denied_noqueue_… Changing this fixed things. I'm not sure, but I think this shows up mostly with installations that include dovecot. 7) If you are using virtual domains in postfix, you need to use the "unusual postfix configuration" in https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/docs/mta.h… virtual_alias_maps = hash:/path-to-mailman/var/data/postfix_vmap 8) You need to manually set the local virtual host for mailman3. Somehow, I got the impression from the installation instructions that this was done automagically to the default x.mydomain.tld if your domain is mydomain.tld. It doesn't. 9) Follow the instructions verbatim, and follow them in the order provided. I installed postfix and nginx out of order, and it did OK, but once you get into the python virtual environment, it is easy to miss something if you don't do it in order. 10) Jot down lots of notes. This is one of the more complicated installations I've done, mostly because it involved configuring a zillion packages to talk to each other: Postfix, nginx, postorius, hyperkitty, django, and others (I'd never heard of "whoosh" or "sass" for instance). All of these can be unforgiving with configuration errors. The default installation instructions assumed a number of packages I'd never used. I'm an apache/dovecot/mysql kind of person, and I had to switch to nginx/postgres to use the instructions as the written defaults. I'm sure I could have used apache and mysql, but it would mean trying to figure out what didn't work without following the installations verbatim. I'd never even heard of postorius, hyperkitty, or django. So, it was easy to get confused a bit. Taking notes of changes I made was important in being able to back out of disastrous choices. Plus, once I'd installed it on one machine, I sat down and installed it on another machine, and it was very useful to have written down how I fixed an issue when it came up again -- and I didn't remember exactly what I had done. 11) Make multiple sequential backups of configuration files. I went down a couple of paths I shouldn't have gone down. For instance, with the vmap issue, I got it in my head that it was a postfix configuration issue, not a mailman issue. So I kept changing things in postfix. Once I was told that it was in *mailman* I had to set the virtual host, I needed to back out of about 8 tweaks I'd made to main.cf in /etc/postfix. If I hadn't been making main.cf.backup.01, main.cf.backup.02, etc. I would have had to spend another few hours trying to remember what inappropriate changes I had made. This is particularly true for me because I am not a great typist, and when I try to retype something to back out, there's a reasonable chance I'll mistype something and it still won't work. With these backups, I don't have both manually back out of things *and* proof my typing again and again. It's a lot easier to delete backups once things are working than to try to remember what you did late at night after a couple of bourbons. 12) Choose one set of installation instructions and follow it. Don't try to mix instructions from different tutorials unless you really know what you are doing. I didn't. For instance, there's a different set of mailman3 installation instructions at: https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Howto_Install_Mailman3_On_Debian10 It does things a little differently. It's useful to look at that when you are debugging why something's not working, but you can get into some trouble trying to do both installations at the same time -- which I found myself doing when something wasn't working. I get this error in mail.log when I try to send mail to my domain Recipient address rejected: SMTP AUTH is required for users under this sender domain (in reply to RCPT TO command)). My setup is such that the server hosting the mailman3 (lists@tld) lists is different from the mail server (mail@tld) Please advise.

template head/footer questions.

I migrated from mailman 2 to mailman3 and had head/footer questions. In the mailman 3 GUI see the templates section, so where do those files get edited/stored? I added a footer to a list via the GUI, but I do not see it in: /var/templates/lists/[listNAME]/en I see some directories corresponding to list names in /var/templates/lists/ But I do not have a directory for all my lists and for the footer one I just added. Bottom line, I assume I should not edit or create any files in /var/templates/lists/ and just use the GUI? is this directory leftover from migrating from mailman 2 to 3? I have a list admin who has made some head and footer files and wants me to put them in /var/templates/lists/[listNAME]/en/.... but I think that may not be the best option.

out queue backlog and delivery rate

We experienced an issue where our upstream mail protection gateway had an issue for a few hours. As a result out Mailman system was inundated with hundreds of messages within half an hour. Mail delivery is continuing at a snails pace and it is now 4 hours behind. I noticed that the system isn't overloaded either via CPU or Memory. It's just slowly "working on it". Are there rate limits that can be tuned for Mailman queues such as the "out" queue? Could this be IO related somehow? I'd expect there to be a CPU spike in that case. Please advise. In the process I found that some of the mm2-commands that I have come to rely on are no longer available for mm3. Active archivers and archiving and thread question.

Digging into the mailman3 world, and want to check my logic... We normally don't use archives, so I have "archive policy" set to "Do not archive this list" for our lists. However, the "archives" button is still there on the list info page, and if users go into it, they don't see anything, But they can click "start a new thread" which sends a message to the list, but since archiving is turned off, that message does not show up there. Am I understanding that correctly? if I have "Active archivers" disabled, that hides that area from the users, correct? Any reason why these are separated? why have an active archiver, if archiving is turned off -OR- archives are turned on, but no active archiver?

Problem with redirection when entering alias without a / at the end

Hey there, I'm using Apache2 as the webserver, configured https://mailman.xyz.de as Web host. When I want to get to Mailman Starting Page now I need to Enter the following URL: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/ to be directly redirected as expected to https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/postorius/lists/ -> works. Problem: When leave out the slash at the end and I ONLY enter the following URL: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3 -> then I'm wrongly redirected to a page, taht does not exist: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman/postorius/lists/ -> 404 Where can I change this misbehaviour? In Apache-conf everything seems as it'S in the docs, for the vHost I do not have any other custom settings. Thank you in advance. By the way: Is there an easy way to redirect directly from https://mailman.xyz.de to https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/postorius/lists/ -> what would be a possibility for that?

Mails are stuck in Mailman Pipeline Queue

Hi Team, I am currently running Mailman 3 with version 3.3.1 and in-built postfix version 2.10.1-6 on RHEL 7.5 with PostgreSQL 11.7 version with default values. I am almost running 2000 lists with 64 GB RAM and 8 Cores on a single VM and on which all the mailman 3 components are running. I have been running this setup in production for the past 2 years and 6 months. I have been seeing a special scenario suddenly: most of the mails that are sent to this server are going to the pipeline queue and not getting released from there. No configuration changes are done and I'm not sure why the mails are getting stuck there. I have recreated the list but no luck. Could not identify the root cause. We're running mailman in a Docker Container (maxking) Mailman Core Version GNU Mailman 3.3.5 (Tom Sawyer) Mailman Core API Version 3.1 Mailman Core Python Version 3.8.10 (default, May 6 2021, 06:30:44) [GCC 9.3.0] As far as I understood, it should be pretty easy. My wish: every new list we create has a default value for the preferred language: de (instead of us) Like described here: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/message… We put the values in: [mailman] default_language: de "/etc/mailman.cfg" and "/opt/mailman/mailman-extra.cfg" Nothing changes. When I create a new list via Postorius, is see the preferred language is US. Am I missing something? Is the default always US? And I have to change it manually? Cheers in advance! Paul

To our confusion, test mails testing for bounces are sent from example.com From: Mailman <mailman(a)example.com> To: Mailman Bounces <mailman-bounces(a)example.com> instead of the list domain and are therefore often considered as spam. users leaking across virtual hosts

Hi We are hosting several virtual hosts (mail host : web host is a 1:1 mapping with identical names), works fine, but it looks user accounts are somehow global, i.e. registering a new user in a new virtual host doesn't work if the user name or e-mail address are already in use in another virtual host. This happens on the Hyperkitty sign-up page: /accounts/signup/ , with the errors being "A user is already registered with this e-mail address." and "A user with that username already exists.". I am assuming this is a well-known limitation, which would require a serious internal redesign to fix; correct? I was able to successfully login in the browser to a vhost using my user credentials from the original vhost (the one where the account was created) (the password was not auto-filled, of course, because of a different domain name). But how safe is this? How about subscribing to lists, posting etc.? Is this going to mess things up somehow? Thanks Stanisław

Hi I am having 4 different virtual domains (FILTER_VHOST = True). However on the domain list page in Postorius: https://.../postorius/domains/ I can see only 3 different SITE_IDs: 1,1,4,3. If I recall correctly, the "3" and "4" were created manually using the Postorius Web UI, whereas the two "1"s were created using the Mailman Client: client.create_domain(name) Is this a bug? Or did I mess something up? What significance do those SITE_IDs have? What I also noticed is that in the Postorius Web UI: https://.../postorius/lists/ both "1" domains display the lists contained in "3", whereas both "3" and "4" display correctly their lists. Except the "3", all domains are empty at the moment (no lists) (so "4" correctly displays no lists). Not sure if this is related?... postorius not displaying mailman logo

I successfully installed mailman3 but Postorius doesn't display images on the web interface. I have checked and mailman is the owner of that directory. Please advise.

anyway to change/set options for a bunch of users?

We just migrated to mailman 3 and one of my admins asked is there a way to change their digest options, when adding a bunch of users via mas subscription? I was looking for an option to say all new users are set to digest, but I can't find it. Also, is there a way to select multiple users in list and change their digest options? I believe could do this in mailman2 but I am trying to figure out if this is possible for the GUI in mailman3?

Special Characters Issue when using Wordpress HTML messages

Hello, We are having trouble where we are using a WordPress server send messages our to a few of our lists as HTML embedded messages. We do not want the messages to be shown as Plaintext, so we have that setting turned off in WordPress and in all our lists' settings. The messages come through just fine, but several characters are being changed to "?". Some of these include ` and - . We recently upgraded from 2.1 to 3.3 and we love the new system, other than the fact that our news messages are looking bad because of all the "?" in them. The charset was set to US-ASCII, but I have changed it to UTF-8 and that has not seemed to do anything. Any ideas on how we can prevent these characters from being changed?

Hi all, Is the documentation correct that ARC should be as simple to configure in mailman 3 as to add the private DKIM key and restarting mailman? (https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/handlers/docs/arc_sign…) I've tried that without finding any effect in my so far limited tests. I have not found anything in logs although I might have missed looking in one. Are there any known limitations? I have previously a working DKIM signature on outgoing mail as well as correctly set up SPF in DNS and SPF-checking on received mail. The verification on incoming mail adds a few headers but I do not think that that should be an issue, neither would the DKIM signing change anything should mailman add new headers. I now run Mailman 3.2.3 (La Villa Strangiato) on Python 3.7.4. Cheers // David

Dealing with email bounces from web signups

Hi. Back on the topic of bogus web signups again. I am dealing with several hundreds of these per month and we're talking a very low traffic system here. I have a cronjob to remove the users from the database. Right now a concern for me is handling the bounces for the confirmation emails that don't get delivered. These are coming from postorius(a)lists.hodgsonfamily.org<mailto:postorius@lists.hodgsonfamily.org> which I have redirected to a mailbox so as not to clutter up the mail queue. What I would ideally like is if we get a bounce from one of these confirmation mails we delete the user from the database but that is probably a future request. We don't get too many of these, around 20-30 a week. What are other people doing with these messages? Thanks. Andrew.

Hi everyone, we're going to be using a Mailman3 list for the purpose of providing email support. So: * Anyone can post to the list * Agents will reply to the poster to receive support, and the reply must go back to the original poster (the client) and the mailing list for other agents to see * The poster's replies will be sent to the mailing list (so other agents can see) as well as to the agent who initially replied to the initial posting Is there any way to accomplish this? Right now, if the agent replies to the client's email correctly but the client doesn't hit "Reply All" the email is only sent to the agent that initially took the "case" and the other agents aren't aware that there was a response. hi, after mark has helped me at the end of january to find users that were not attached to any mailing list (indicating people who pressed the wrong button when trying tosign up), we sent out a 2nd mass mail to our target audience to ask them to subscribe again. we are now getting feedback from people, who say that they are unable to sign up, with mailman3 telling them: > Subscription request already pending this is somewhat bad as: - at least some of the users (who reported the problem) tried to subscribe 2 months ago (2022-01-04) - if they did not confirm their email back then, i'm pretty sure that this email has been lost by now - my /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg has "pending_request_life: 3d" - i (as administrator) do not see any "pending subscriptions" (the list is setup with a simple "Confirm" subscription policy - i (as administrator) do not find any mention of the user's email address anywhere either in postorious webinterface of the list, nor in the django - in the sql-dump (it's been a while since i worked with postgres on a higher level) i do see the user's email in the workflowstate, address and pendedkeyvalue tables. the installation is (still) mailman_3.2.1-1 on a Debian/buster system (using the Debian/buster packages for mailman3) i wonder: - why are the pending subscriptions not expired? (i guess they should have expired after 3 days) - why can't people re-subscribe while there's a subscription pending (e.g. if the confirmation mail got lost)? - how can i list all pending subscriptions (for a given mailinglist)? - how can i resolve the situtation (e.g. send out another reminder; manually expire the pendings; manually confirm the pendings,...) gfmdsd IOhannes

I installed mailman3 in a virtualenv following this guide: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html[1] The mailinglists work very good. However, I did not manage to set up hyperkitty archiving. Archiving is enabled in mailman.cfg. I can call the Archive site from my configuration page, but it is empty. In my /opt/mailman/mm/var/logs/mailman.log file I find error messages like: HyperKitty failure on http://localhost/mailman/hyperkitty/api/mailman/archive: The requested URL was not found on this server. Indeed I cannot access that url using curl. Do I have to set up a separate apache vhost? The documentation is not clear about this, or I missed it. Delete user

Hi *! Recently, I have updated my docker images to 0.4.2 and it worked great. In the Postorius GUI, I see a new topic "Users" and found it quite comfortable. But one problem remais open - how can I delete a user alltogether, i.e. including his subscription and account data from the database? The reason for this question are the GDPR regulations - we do subscribe new staff members to some lists automatically, and should unsubscribe them and delete the entries after they left our organization. DKIM signatures with message footers or subject prefixes

Dear Experts What is the best way to go about reconciling GNU Mailman3-made message modifications (like message footers or subject prefixes) with sender-made DKIM signatures? I am aware of the "DMARC mitigations" tab in the list settings, not bad, but it looks that "replace From: with list address" doesn't help (of course), whereas wrapping the message in an outer message often looks ugly. Is there a better way?... BTW I would like to point out that broken DKIM signature can be a problem even with an easy DMARC policy; for example ProtonMail will display this flashy red warning: https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/email-has-failed-its-domains-… in its webmail. (I guess nothing can be done about it except "DMARC Mitigate unconditionally"). This is GNU Mailman 3.1. Thanks!

list footer questions

Hi, This seems to me like basic simple questions, I have tried FAQ and other resources, with not much success. I have two questions: 1. When I send an email to a list, in gmail and yahoo I see the following text with the links at the end of the email body: _______________________________________________ Testlist_dmark1 mailing list - listname(a)domain.tlb<mailto:testlist_dmark1@newlistserv.aaas.org> To unsubscribe send an email to listname-leave(a)domain.tlb In<mailto:listname-leave@domain.tlb%0b%0bIn> outlook this is added as an attachment in the form of a TEXT file, when you open it, you see the same text. Question: Is there a way to change this, that it looks in outlook the same way as it appears in gmail/yahoo? I know MS does it own stuff sometime and we have no impact on that, but I was thinking maybe we might change the footer in a way that outlooks sees that as part of email body. 2. How may I change the format and the text in footer? I was expecting it under list > setting, in postorius, but I could not find it. New MM3 plugin: mailman_sieve

Hello, I have published a new Mailman 3 plugin at https://mail.aegee.org/cgit/mailman_sieve/tree/ . It generates for each mailing list a Sieve script. When the Sieve script is evaluated during the SMTP dialog, it would reject some emails, which otherwise would be bounced by Mailman. Less bounces means less backscatters and better IP reputation. For the record, I do the evaluation of the Sieve scripts during the SMTP dialog with https://mail.aegee.org/cgit/aegee-milter . Since the latter is not documented yet, you cannot use it. The mailman_sieve plugin is not useful, unless you have software to evaluate the Sieve Scripts during the SMTP dialog. This is a very first version, which does what it is supposed to do. Some optimizations are possible, like not including the subscriber addresses in the Sieve scripts for announce-only mailing lists. I am not good at writing setuptools configuration. Neither do I understand the mailman system very good right now, creating possibly shorter scripts. But the plugin is there to keep by IP reputation good! My reading of the mm3 source code is that there is no event triggered, when the mailing list configuration changes, like adding a new moderator, or switching the announce-only status. If you have a developed idea not already listed that you're willing to discuss and advocate, and you're willing to grab the template (last item on our ideas page on list.org) and fill it out, please post it to mailman-developers(a)python.org. (This a deliberate hoop-jumping exercise to filter in "serious" ideas.) You can put more weight on it by expressing interest in mentoring the project, and even more by actually volunteering! ;-) If you have a half-baked idea, and/or you want to get input from other Mailman users, of course you should feel free to discuss it on mailman-users(a)mailman3.org. We *might* pick it up from there, even if it's just a drive-by post with little support from the list members. But no promises about that, most of our attention will go to mailman-developers. If you feel some idea should get more love, polish it a little and post that to mailman-developers (don't cross-post, please). Again, we'd love to have more mentors, including backup mentors. We currently only have two mentors. Although we're both core developers, and I'm on an academic schedule and can devote plenty of time to the student during the summer, not so for Abhilash. I just migrated my lists to mailman3 in docker today... YEAHHH!!!!!!!! but now my admins have to setup accounts and I noticed when they get the email to confirm it comes from admnin(a)[XYZ.COM]. Where is this email set? how can I change it? it is set to an internal domain (not public) of ours, so it is getting flagged as spam in external email accounts I looked in my docker. yaml and the MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL=mailman3(a)[123.com}. which is where I would expect the request/confirmation email to come from.

User suspended after too much spam

I have set up spamassassin as spamfilter, and it works reasonable so far. Some spam passes the filter and I try to use it for training. However, one of my users has a very restrictive spam filter and rejects all spam. This causes mailman to suspend that user. I have to enable the user each time. How can I change that behaviour? I do not want my users to be suspended. Cheers

Mailman3 not working following distribution upgrade from Debian 10 to 11.

I performed a distribution upgrade from Debian 10 Buster (which runs mailman 3.2.1) to Debian 11 Bullseye (which runs mailman 3.3.1) with the command "apt-get full-upgrade -y" and everything apparently worked properly except at the end of the upgrade when the following error dialog was generated by the mailman3-web and mailman3-full post-installation scripts: Setting up mailman3-web (0+20200530-2) ... Determining localhost credentials from /etc/mysql/debian.cnf: succeeded. dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/mailman3-web.conf dbconfig-common: flushing administrative password sed: -e expression #2, char 77: unterminated `s' command dpkg: error processing package mailman3-web (--configure): installed mailman3-web package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mailman3-full: mailman3-full depends on mailman3-web; however: Package mailman3-web is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing package mailman3-full (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: mailman3-web mailman3-full E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Now, every time that I execute "apt-get upgrade" then I continue to get the above error dialog. Mass un/subscribe optimization?

Hi -- We've noticed slowness in mass un/subscribing users; looking through the issue(s) log we see both #419 [1] and #627 [2] open and related. From the cmd line we get better performance, but with the subscriber size on many of our Faculty/Staff/Students ad-hoc lists (think 1k-15K subscribed addresses) and with our number of lists (2600) and unique owners utilizing these actions it would be helpful to optimize the mass actions. We wanted to get some thoughts and guidance on what needs to be optimized/redesigned/fixed? Or is there already something in the works, but needs more time? We may be able to provide resources to encourage and/or assist with any development and/or testing... We run a split core/web setup with Apache,mod_wsgi and MySQL backend (AWS hosted). So I see the process for migrating an archive from mailman2 to mailman3 https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html.................. i.e python manage.py hyperkitty_import -l foo-list(a)example.com $var_prefix/archives/private/foo-list.mbox/foo-list.mbox but does the migration handle attachments?? attachments are in ..../archives/private/foo-list/attachments. I assume this is if you are upgrading in place? I am migrating to a new server and my plan is to follow these steps but copy the config.pck. and .mbox files to the new server and import them, but then it looks like I need to copy the attachment directory? if so how do I import the attachments to mailman3?

sending messages in response to posts from non-members

In mailman2 a list was moderated, the admin would also get an email to approve the message, our lists mainly have admins and no moderators. The admins did the moderation. In mailman3 it looks this is now a setting "autorespond to list owner" was this a setting in mailman 2? Anyway, in importing email list from mailman 2 to 3, it appears that this setting is set to "No automatic response", is that right? So does this means if I import all my lists from mailman 2, then the admins will not get moderation notifications until I make that setting change on each list?

Mailman3 people -- Hyperkitty is failing in my new setup. Hi community, I was wondering if there is a walk-through for the following issue - or is it even an issue? We got plenty lists with a lot of users come and go from time to time. So... I run a small mailinglist using mailman3 that has been workiing great for a couple of months. Last week, all my users from gmail got kicked off because gmail decided that the list messages were "unsolicited email". I didn't find out about it until the users hit their mailman3 bounce limit. I *thought* would be seeing all the bounce messages, but apparently not. I didn't see any config settings for "see all the bounce messages" so i thought to myself, "Self, well maybe that's because my mailinglist username doesn't have a mailbox in /home/listname". So, I decided to try that. I created /home/listname/Maildir/* and logged in as fplist to see if it would put mail there. In order to log in as listname, I gave the user listname a password. Then the world ended. The mailinglist works OK for *new* posts, but it is now impossible to *reply* to posts. So, if I post as a member from user(a)somewhere.org to listname(a)example.com, it works. If I hit reply, with the From: line rewritten as listname(a)example.com, it fails. The error I get is: The reported error was “Error performing TLS handshake: An unexpected TLS packet was received.”. My suspicion is that there are two passwords floating around for "listname" -- one in mailman3 and the one in /etc/shadow, but I don't know. In retrospect, this was not my finest moment. But is there an easy way to back out of this? Thanks! billo

Hi good folks, I'm new to the group, so bear with me please. A decade or more with Mm2.1 but recently upgraded to Mm3 so no experiences with this latter. Details: Debian 11.2 (stable), everything installed from deb packages, mariadb10.5, python3.9, mailman3.3.3, hyperkitty1.3.4, etc. everything stock Debian. A few low volume lists, one of them migrated from Mm2.1 but most started newly. Couple of glitches, resolved them most so far. but could not cope with this one yet so I must ask your advice. On one of my maillists certain messages can't seem to make it to the archive. They spread right among list members but stuck in /var/lib/mailman3/archives/hyperkitty/spool and hyperkitty can not handle and archive them due to finding an incorrect string. All -- I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the people on this list who helped me stand up a modest mailman3 server. As of today I have 3 lists with a total of ~150 users running in production on a small VM in google's cloud. Hello, My mailman3 installation is now functional, but the config "FILTER_VHOST = True" doesn't work fine when I define "alias_domain" for the 2 domains. I need to define that because I need to get "postfix_vmap" file. As you can see, list from others domains are visible on this URL : https://ml.franceserv.fr/postorius/lists/ I would like https://ml.franceserv.fr/postorius/lists/ and https://ml.viticreation.fr/postorius/lists/ with their own lists. High memory usage

Hi, We are having an issue with high memory usage on our Mailman3 server. Initially, our server had 16GB RAM and the memory usage went up from 5% to 92% within a week. So, we increased the memory capacity to 32GB RAM and we can see that the memory usage is going up in the same pattern. Any idea why it is happening? or any suggestions? Kind regards, Prasanth Nair

Template Ignored?

Mailman3 people -- I created a new list, and used postorius to create a template for " list:user:notice:welcome". I then used the mass subscription feature to add myself to the list, having checked "pre-confirmed", "pre-approved", and "pre-verified". I received a welcome message that appears to be the default welcome message. It certainly wasn't what I put into my template. Any suggestions on how I get mailman to use my template? Hey there, in Mailman2 there was a simple link in the moderation-emails, with which I was able to open directly the "held-messages". I know how to manually integrate such a link with the variables of mailman (https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…) But: How can I change the template for all the lists (respectively maildomains/webdomains) so that I don't have to do this manually for all lists? I searched a bit for the corresponding template, but didn't find it. At the end it only says the following: "At your convenience, visit your dashboard to approve or deny the request." -> here I would like to add the following: "At your convenience, visit your dashboard to approve or deny the request: https://$domain/postorius/lists/$short_listname.$domain/held_messages" Or if someone sees another possibility to get us on the right track, it would be more than welcome, thank you! Hi, I have installed mailman3 server and configured MailmanWeb ( hyperkity + Postorious ) . The service and everything works fine, but I am little bit confuses with the user management in mailman3, 1) I created an owner user for a mailing list using the mailmanclient api tools, # from mailmanclient.client import Client 2) I can't login to the Mailmanweb with this user For further investigation shows the mailman have its own database and the web frontend have its own database too. So my question is how to configure the webfrontend ( hyperkit+ postorious ) to use the accounts logins created from the mailmanclient api from the mailman core database. Or is there a way to use only one user management system ? Any help will be appreciated. -- Sherin

New users subscribe with this address but MANY of the old ones continue to use the PREVIOUS address. - we implemented a spam filtering policy as follows: - staff (and former staff) can SUBSCRIBE with any address or CHANGE their address. Any subscribed address will be recognised. Mail is NOT held in moderation unless too bulky, or has undisclosed recipients - mail from non members with any address in the .it TLD or in the tng.iac.es domain (where some of our staff work) goes into moderation (this is achieved via regexp in hold_these_nonmembers) - anything else is silently discarded as spam (generic_nonmember_action = discard) - when some staff posts from a non-subscribed address (be it the home address, or one of the alternate addresses described above) it therefore goes into moderation because of hold_these_nonmembers - in mailman2 we could let them pass "manually" (if we recognised the person) or (in case they used an alternate address) tick to add them permanently to accept_these_nonmembers (in one tick) - at the end we got somehow fed up of this but we did NOT want to accept any address of the form ^.+@.+\.inaf.it (which could be forged) but found that we could simply put in accept_these_nonmembers two entries like @list1 @list2 where list1 and list2 are two institutional lists on the same server which contain all permanent and temporary staff or assimilated with their official address (these lists are automagically generated each week) (so at least any VALID EXISTING official address is accepted) What I found now (after the migration done by the administrators of the central seat) is that in mailman3: - accept_these_nonmembers is empty - there are 189 entries listed in Non-members (which look those formerly in accept_these_nonmembers) - hold_these_nonmembers was copied identical with the same regexp's as in mailman2 - I have inspected a few of them and found that they have Administration options Moderation set to List default - the effect of this apparently was that a post from some.guy(a)inaf.it (whose subscription address is guy(a)somewhere.inaf.it) was hold for moderation is this due to a loop with the regexp in hold_these_nonmembers ? the default action would be to let it pass Or should we set Administration options Moderation to Accept immediately ? - if so, how can we do it automatically for all 189 entries ? - or move back the 189 addresses to accept_these_nonmembers ? - or for the future have persons posting with alternate addrresses accepted for the future WITH ONE CLICk ? - AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST would the syntax @list1 in accept_these_nonmembers work in mailman3 ? already putting it back will save a lot of work. moderation notices for list-owner being redirected to mailman address

We have seen a very strange behavior on 2 separate occasions/lists over the past month. A SENDER(a)SOME.DOMAIN emails OURLIST(a)OUR.DOMAIN, and that post is (correctly) held for moderation. The moderation notification is sent by OURLIST-owner(a)OUR.DOMAIN to OURLIST-owner(a)OUR.DOMAIN, and everything works fine. But in a few very rare cases, at some point during the convoluted delivery path to the mailbox of the actual human owner of OURLIST, the recipient is changed from OURLIST-owner(a)OUR.DOMAIN to mailman(a)OUR.DOMAIN. I am going to paste full headers below (with fake public IPs), but I think that these 2 particular lines highlight the problem: X-MailFrom: OURLIST-bounces+OURLIST-owner=OUR.DOMAIN(a)OUR.DOMAIN X-MailFrom: OURLIST-bounces+mailman=OUR.DOMAIN(a)OUR.DOMAIN because only the first one is present normally. Customise Postorius templates?

Hi, I'm looking to do some radical customisation of the Postorius (and Hyperkitty) templates over the next 6 ish months and was wondering if there is a 'best practice' way to do this that will survive updates to MM3. I've searched around and not found much and also tested copying venv/lib/python3.7/site-packages/postorius/templates/postorius/lists/summary.html to var/templates/lists/summary.html As suggested in some posts - but it didn't seem to pick up the customisation - only customisations in the venv path worked - and they get overwritten on update. Is there a 'best' way for this? I'd also like to eventually share them with the community and maybe add them to the repo if people want that....but for now I'll start with my own experiments. (and if there is documentation I have missed for this, let me know!)

Time Zone Issue in Postorius

Hello, I'm encountering an error that sounds similar to this previous thread: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/message… I've tried setting my TIME_ZONE to 'UTC' in my settings.py and settings_local.py files (and restarting Mailman), but when I check the datetime for a held message in Postorius, the datetime seems to be pushed +8 hours unexpectedly. My Postorius account time zone is set to "US/Pacific". As a workaround, I might be able to find a "wrong" time zone that would possibly reduce the unintentional additional hours difference and show the "correct" time zone in Postorius for the "Held Messages" page, but I don't think this is the right way to fix the issue. I think I've tried setting the TIME_ZONE setting to "America/Los_Angeles" in my settings.py file in place of 'UTC' in the past, but the result was still different than expected. Does anyone know if there are other places besides the mailman settings.py and settings_local.py files where something needs to be set so that I don't get an unintentional extra +8 hours of time difference when looking at messages on the "Held Messages" page of a mailing list? Error 500 on held_messages page

Hello all, we now have at least one mailing list (there may be more affected) that generates a 500 error when calling the held_messages page. After looking at the held messages via the mailman shell, we have identified three mails that have neither a subject nor a message body. How can we remove these three mails from the database? Docker mailman 3 and upgrading questions

I am running mailman 3 in docker and trying to figure out -how to upgrade -can you back out. For example I installed docker with a git pull • git clone https://github.com/maxking/docker-mailman docker images shows REPOSITORY TAG IMAGE ID CREATED SIZE maxking/mailman-web 0.3 9ba9d3d7084d 4 months ago 487MB maxking/mailman-core 0.3 26c920c0094b 4 months ago 178MB **** database is hosted via external database I only installed it a few months ago, am I really on 0.3.0 , I assume I am on 3.0 from 2019 and that is what "git clone https://github.com/maxking/docker-mailman" gets???? looking at the release matrix "https://github.com/maxking/docker-mailman/releases?page=2" It looks like the latest releases are 0.4.1 for core & 0.4.2 for web, How do I upgrade, is it a "git pull" or "docker update" command? If something does not work, is there a way to back out? What version should I go to from 0.3? I am thinking it should be v0.3.12 cause that won't break anything? But how do I do that? What i'm looking for is the directory structure, files, configs of a working mailman3 installation (with passwords/secrets obscured, etc). - /etc/mailman3, /opt/mailman, /etc/nginx, /etc/postfix, etc... I've tried 3 or 4 installations with varying degrees of success. For me, more issues seem related to configuration, not the actual installation. So having an example installation to compare proper configuration (and perhaps file/directory placement) would really help to sanity check what i've installed. Since this installed copy would be created for each release, it would exist at some point. Is it possible this could be made available (with pws/secrets obscured...)? I've seen quite a few threads related to configuration issues...hopefully it would help with those as well.

National language messages in mm3 notifications

Hello There is a problem with moderator/administrator notifications used national (non-acsii) characters in templates. Messages came with all non-ascii chars changed to '?' As I can see some parts of customizable text are originated from localized messages (mailman/messages/<country code>/LC_MESSAGES), other from site/domain/list templates. I made some localization/translation of LS_MESSAGES for Russian language via Weblate site and import .po file to test site setup. Web interface messages seems to be ok but email notifications are not. Content-type: and Content-Transfer-Encoding: headers are not suitable for national charsets. After resolving the block issue, I'm now waiting for mailman to resend the mails. Now, after 3 hours, nothing has happened so far. What is wrong here? DMARC DNS settings for MM3?

Emails from our list are currently being blocked by Google & Yahoo because of the "Dmarc policy of the sender domain" (according to Google Postmaster). Our list doesn't do any munging for "Reply goes to list" and our DMARC Mitigations is set for "No DMARC mitigations" and we're not DMARC Mitigating unconditionally. Given this is our MM3 policy, it's not clear what the DMARC DNS policy should be for consistency (note: we currently don't have a DMARC DNS setting). MM3 documentation doesn't have enough info, and reading up on DMARC Records it's not clear if we should be: v=DMARC1;p=reject;pct=100;rua=mailto:postmaster@ourdomain.com -or- v=DMARC1;p=quarantine;pct=100;ruf=mailto:postmaster@ourdomain.com -or something else- Our DNS' SPF record is: v=spf1 ip4:aa.bb.cc.dd +a +mx ~all [Note: aa.bb.cc.dd is a redacted address] I'd rather not experiment on DMARC record settings for fear of making a bad situation worse. Hello mailman users out there - I have been a casual user of mailman for 21 years now I think it is. Most of my lists were super small (my only current lists have no more than 8 members each), super low volume. It's "just worked" over the years, no issues. I have been using Linux since 1996, not a newbie here. 21 years ago I deployed mailman as part of our corporate email and then there were a lot more users. Since that time I just use mailman on my personal server. I did a apt-get dist-upgrade on my system and was surprised to see mailman had vanished. Wasn't expecting that.. not a big deal, or so I thought. I am running Devuan 4, which is based on Debian. Investigating further it seems Debian at some point dropped Mailman 2.1 and started including Mailman 3. OK, not too bad I thought.. I was/am prepared to start my mailing lists from scratch again, manually copy/paste over settings/users/etc. Don't care about archives etc. I setup mailman 2.1 on another Devuan 3.x system and copied my mailman configs over to it, and can view them fine via the mailman cgi scripts through Apache, I was planning on just copy/pasting list settings between the two systems for each list. Roughly 10-15mins into trying to get mailman3 off the ground I just find myself overwhelmed. That doesn't happen often. I'm honestly completely shocked at how it seems the complexity of the system has increased by orders of magnitude. I have been browsing around https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/pre-installation-guide.html (and other links on that documentation site) But as much information as there is, to me there really isn't any information there. If that makes sense. I'm sure it doesn't make sense so let me give an example. On this page: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/config-web.html I assume that would lead me to how do I configure the web interface so I can do stuff with it. I setup an admin account, then it goes into scheduled tasks(which appear to be handled by the Debian package already but don't know what these tasks would have to do with a web interface). I tried sending a test email but that failed, I looked at the setting up email portion but it does not give any indication where that config would be stored, a recursive grep on /etc for EMAIL_BACKEND turns up nothing (there is a /etc/mailman3 directory with some files in there). Then it goes into other things like task queues, full text searching, here I am just looking for info on where this web interface is, where is the config, what port does it listen on? Is it a cgi like mailman2? It seems like it could be a standalone service. Then it shows a bunch of other settings, not indicating what file these are stored in(or what directory the file is in), etc etc etc. Debian's own documentation is severely lacking in this department as well, normally I am used to going to /usr/share/doc/<package>/ and there is some useful stuff. There is stuff for mailman3 but it's minimal at best. So I'm thinking mailman3 is not the package for me. I've really appreciated mailman 2.1 (and earlier versions) as I said they always just worked, never had to think about them. I'm sure a lot of good hard work has been put into 3, I just don't recall the last time I looked at a project and just honestly didn't even know where to begin which surprised me so much given my 20+ year history of mailman as a user and as an admin. Is there some document(s) out there that would be more beneficial to me in setting up mailman3? I see that mailman 2 looks like it's still being maintained, I assume mailman3 is the result of python3 code and mailman2 perhaps uses python 2.7? I am unsure on the ability to run mailman2 on a modern Debian-based distro since of course Python 2.7 is pretty obsolete at this point (or maybe Mailman 2.1 doesn't use python I don't recall). I could try to install the older mailman 2.1 package on Devuan 4 and see what happens I don't know if it would be that simple or not. Or is there a better MLM for simple use cases? I used Majordomo back in the 90s and was happy to get onto Mailman from that. Something similar to Mailman 2.1 in features/functionality. Worst case I could just use aliases in my postfix config at the end of the day that is all that is really needed, though I do like some level of access control on who can email the lists(even if nobody outside the list knows the list exists), I've had some of these lists for 2 decades, old habits die hard right? I did some searches for mailing list software on the Debian package archives and saw a few options, nothing really stood out at me as something super interesting yet though. I don't mean to come across as harsh or complaining or anything I'm just here in shock kind of. Thinking about what the best solution for me would be. My mailing lists have been broken for a couple of weeks but that's really not a big deal. thanks nate

Cannot request password reset: "The e-mail address is not assigned to any user account"

I have set up Mailman Core Version GNU Mailman 3.3.5 with Mailman Core API Version 3.1 (Python 3.8.10) using the version 0.40 Docker images. I was able to get things set up and tested by requesting a password reset for the MAILMAN_ADMIN_USER specified in the docker.yaml. Using the web API, I have created several mailing lists and I have added members to these lists also using the web API (most relevant: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…) specifying that each member is already pre_verified, pre_confirmed, and pre_approved. The lists themselves seem to be working fine. The problem is when our staff try to reset their password (through Postorious) to get access and do moderation tasks. The error message "The e-mail address is not assigned to any user account" displays no matter which email address I enter (except the one from MAILMAN_ADMIN_USER which works). Using the MAILMAN_ADMIN_USER I can sign in, view the list of all the users, see their Addresses (one each) and Subscriptions, but even after toggling off "Verified" for the staff email address, clicking Update, then turning Verified back on and updating again, I still can't reset the password for that email address from the "forgot pasword" screen. Even tried adding that email address as another list owner. I have not made any API calls specific to adding users because the API documentation says, "Since her email address is not yet known to Mailman, a user is created for her." This does seem to have happened; GET 127.0.0.1:8001/3.1/users does show everyone's display name and unique user_id strings. I have tried using the API to PATCH a temporary password to the user but that didn't fix the inability to reset. The encrypted password does show in the /users/ data reported by the API (where previously there had been none), and a POST to users/<user_id>/login with that password return the 204 status shown to indicate success (instead of 403)... but I can't log in using Postorious with this user's email address and password. I also tried PATCHing the cleartext_password to /users/<email_address> and wasn't able to login or reset after that either. According to the API, each of the users -- webadmin where I can reset the password and staff where I can't -- does have a single address. (In the following, I redacted the API username and password ; changed email addresses, and IP address. I've tried tailing all the log files I can find while attempting the reset and am not seeing any error messages, but I don't know exactly where to look.
