Find a smtp server to send out emails

Hi, This problem is not caused by mailman, but I still want to give it a shot here. I'm hosting a mailing list on top of mailman3. Emails are supposed to be sent out by AWS ses. However, ses requires that sender address must be verified, which leads to a problem that emails sent by subscribers to mailing list cannot be sent to other subcirbers, since their addresses are not verified. And it is impossible to verified every subscriber. Are there smtp service providers allowing unverified email address to send out emails, or do I have other solutions? Thanks. -- Best wishes, Leon

Moderation of held emails vs. spam

Hi, I now run Mailman 3.3.1, installed from pip. Is there now any way to prevent Mailman from forwarding the contents of the held message when notifying moderators of held messages? In my case these messages often are spam messages and if the entire contents are forwarded it triggers spam handling in the recipient address(es) which over time risks classifying all moderation emails as spam or even classifying the list domain or server as a spam source. Even my own outgoing filter classifies it as spam, which I will fix. I currently run rspamd for spam filtering, graylisting and DKIM and ARC verification/signing. Someone on this recommended it, thank you for that as it removes the need for other milters. I guess that this would be a simple change to make as a kludge but a proper implementation as a setting would be a lot better. I'd like it as a global setting but that might be too coarse. I have finished my how-to install Mailman 3 on Debian 10 completed to the point where you can use it to get a fully functional Mailman 3 environment up and running. This is a comprehensive guide that walks you through installing EVERYTHING (currently!) that Mailman 3 needs to run. It also makes updating Mailman 3/Postorius/Hyperkitty very easy. I have not added the update directions yet but will very soon. I also plan on adding a section on setting up DKIM and Xapian with Mailman 3. I hope this helps those who wish to get a Mailman 3 server up and running quickly and brings a sense of sanity to the confusion regarding the various documentation out there concerning the installation of Mailman 3/Postorius/Hyperkitty. How to Increase outgoing mail volume for Mailman 3

Hello everyone, We had a new client come on board that brought a list that had the largest out-going mail volume that I have ever dealt with. So I did what any sane server administrator would do that is running Mailman 3: I ran to Mark Sapiro for help! Here is what the Sage of all things Mailman counseled me to do: 1. Disabled VERP delivery. VERP can help improve mail delivery by delivering 1 message per SMTP transaction (I think I got that right). Using VERP is counter-productive as it can seriously delay outgoing mail delivery for a high-volume list. So you can use something like the following in the MTA section of your mailman.cfg: [mta] verp_confirmations: no verp_personalized_deliveries: no verp_delivery_interval: 0 2. I configured Mailman 3 to run 4 outgoing runners. The default is 1. This action was the game changer. It allows Mailman to handle 4 incoming messages at a time instead of 1. My client's incoming list volume was high enough where it was overwhelming the single outgoing runner. Here is what I added to the mailman.cfg file: [runner.out] instances: 4 Doing this step immediately solved the backlog in var/queue/out. 3. If you start up with a new server for a list that is high volume then keep an eye out for Proofpoint and Vade Security as they will block your new IP address quicker than Mark Sapiro can say "This is a bug. Questions regarding message acceptance

Hello, I have few questions regarding usage of Mailman3: 1) We have list1 and list2 with members. Can we specify that all members of list1 can post messages to list2? We could potentially write a script that would synchronize members of another list to “Accept these non-members” of another list, but with thousands of lists it will be difficult to maintain lists in synchro. So perhaps there is a concept of adding another list to “Accept these non-members” and mailman real-time evaluate membership of another list upon message arrival? 2) In explanation of “Accept these non-members” it’s written: “While non-regexp addresses can be entered here, it is preferred to add the address as a nonmember and set the nonmember's Moderation to Default Processing”. I noticed that if someone posts to a list then he is added automatically to non-members. Which means that next time he will be able to post. My understanding is that it’s better to use the feature “Accept these non-members”. Am I correct? Thank you, Paweł

hello there, i migrated to a new host last night and i've been getting this error from a cronjob mail every minute. anyone have any ideas what would cause this? Splitting hosts: mta&core vs postorius

I'm trying to set up mailman3 on two hosts, one of which runs core + exim, the other runs postorius (&possibly hyperkitty). I have I think got core set up correctly, and postorius is sort of usable, but anything in the web ui that talks to core ends up with a white screen. I think what is happening is a postorius URL ends up with the core (or perhaps no) hostname, and as there's nothing there to answer it fails. I've checked the settings and I don't think I have misconfigured postorius. Is it possible that the bad url is being passed from core to postorius in some way and reused without changing the host? In the config at present, both hosts are visible to the browser, and each host can communicate with the other. Any ideas on how to pin down the problem better? Ruth

Loops back to myself

Hi, I have a problem with my Mailman 3-setup. The symptom is that postfix rejects non-existing addresses for my list domains with <adr(a)example.com>: mail for example.com loops back to myself What I guess happens happens is that postfix for some reason accepts the mail as it is for a relay domain and finds that it is not deliverable locally as the address does not exist locally and then tries to relay it on to the appropriate MX server, which is itself and then fails and generates a bounce message. This is a bit annoying as I have set up postfix to only accept valid addresses. I have set the transport_maps, local_recipient_maps and relay_domains to the files generated by MM3. I run an older version of MM3 (3.0) but prefer to fix this without upgrading as upgrading is a relatively big undertaking. This is mostly a backscatter problem for spam I guess. Any ideas of very simple and easy to forget things that I've probably missed? Cheers // David

Mailman3 stopped sending out mail

Hello. Recently my mailman3 instance stopped distributing mail. But mailman's own mail (notification, digest etc) and archiving are working OK. Mailman 3 - Header Filter

I am a Mailman neophyte and need help with filtering posts based on the subject field. We have a few list owners that want 'Out of Office' replies discarded. When using the below syntax in Postorius/Header filter the post is not discarded but ends up in 'Held Messages'. Is there any syntax I am missing or a setting in the lists that needs to be disabled/enabled to get these posts dropped? Any help is much appreciated. Importing mbox files into archive defect with lines with From

A curious problem, but seems to be well defined. I am importing mbox format files with 25 years worth of archives in 250 files from a Listserv list into hyperkitty. All is going swimmingly, except I get lots of partial emails with sender of None put into the current month, with text that has clearly been truncated. As I look at each one, I see that the line in the imported text is immediately after a line starting with 'From'. Clearly, 'From:' is an RCS-82 header, but 'From ' is not, and yet there is much evidence here that this is messing up the import. Is this a known bug? If not, how do I report it?

Strange issue with bounce processing

Dear List, First of all Merry Christmas to those of you that are observing it. I have an issue on one of my Mailman 3 servers. The bounce runner is not running, even after restarting mailman core. All the other runners are working fine. Here is the problem, after restarting it, a number of messages show up in queue/bounces from a single list. However the bounce runner is still not running. So I remove these messages from queue/bounces folder and restart mailman core. The same messages show up from the same single list again in queue/bounces. In the var/logs/bounce.log file, addresses from this list are being logged as being removed after starting mailman core. They correlate with the messages showing up in queue/bounces. I assume these "cached" bounces are what is interfering with the running of the bounce runner. I don't see anything in the mailman or mailmansuite log that would explain this behavior. Okay, so I got the webservice of Mailman3 up and running, but when I go to mailman3/postorius/lists/, I get the following error: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. When I logged in to the admin user, it threw a server 500 error, but I could refresh and see myself logged in. If I try to go to lists or mailman settings, however, I get the error above.

where do I find the text of a bounce email ?

All, I am trying to figure why a particular outbound message was bounced, so I'm looking for the text of the NDR that was sent - where do I find that ? Fyi, the outbound message was accepted by the first relay, and then presumably later bounced by the actual recipient server (Office365). Delete Django profiles not signed up to a list

Hi, I have noticed recently I have around 2000 bogus sign-ups that have created accounts in Django. Looking through the logs these have come from the Postorius sign-up pages. I checked and email confirmation is required before the accounts are created and the email addresses that have been used do seem like they could respond to these requests. I don't want to add captchas to the form right now but is there any way to clean out these users from the database perhaps periodically based on whether the accounts are subscribed to any list? Hi ! I need simple add/delete member to list using rest ..... but all documentation is for python and not helpfull for me, .... and I need these in CLI using curl command .... Hi, Currently, I use a nginx configuration for mailman. It's work perfectly. I tried to do the same with Apache, but the statics files are not delivered (404). Adding user - Error 409 Subscription request already pending

We have a couple of people trying to subscribe to our list but receive an error similar to: {"title": "409 Conflict", "description": "Subscription request already pending"} If I try to Mass Subscribe them in Postorius I get this error: HTTP Error 409: b'{"title": "409 Conflict", "description": "Subscription request already pending"}' In Postorius I don't see them hung up in Subscription requests. I hope this is helpful to the Ubuntu folks out there. Once some critical small things were figured out, turns out it's pretty easy to get Mailman 3 running successfully under Ubuntu 18.04. The linked google doc includes my own walkthru, which includes using a cloud server image for Ubuntu 18.04 and a LAMP setup with Apache 2 and PHP, as well as Python and PostgreSQL, and the mailman3-full package that comes with that Ubuntu distribution. Problem with redirection when entering alias without a / at the end

Hey there, I'm using Apache2 as the webserver, configured https://mailman.xyz.de as Web host. When I want to get to Mailman Starting Page now I need to Enter the following URL: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/ to be directly redirected as expected to https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/postorius/lists/ -> works. Problem: When leave out the slash at the end and I ONLY enter the following URL: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3 -> then I'm wrongly redirected to a page, taht does not exist: https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman/postorius/lists/ -> 404 Where can I change this misbehaviour? In Apache-conf everything seems as it'S in the docs, for the vHost I do not have any other custom settings. Thank you in advance. By the way: Is there an easy way to redirect directly from https://mailman.xyz.de to https://mailman.xyz.de/mailman3/postorius/lists/ -> what would be a possibility for that?

Hi all, Is the documentation correct that ARC should be as simple to configure in mailman 3 as to add the private DKIM key and restarting mailman? (https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/handlers/docs/arc_sign…) I've tried that without finding any effect in my so far limited tests. I have not found anything in logs although I might have missed looking in one. Are there any known limitations? I have previously a working DKIM signature on outgoing mail as well as correctly set up SPF in DNS and SPF-checking on received mail. The verification on incoming mail adds a few headers but I do not think that that should be an issue, neither would the DKIM signing change anything should mailman add new headers. I now run Mailman 3.2.3 (La Villa Strangiato) on Python 3.7.4. Cheers // David

Hi, This seems to me like basic simple questions, I have tried FAQ and other resources, with not much success. I have two questions: 1. Question: Is there a way to change this, that it looks in outlook the same way as it appears in gmail/yahoo? I know MS does it own stuff sometime and we have no impact on that, but I was thinking maybe we might change the footer in a way that outlooks sees that as part of email body. 2. How may I change the format and the text in footer? I was expecting it under list > setting, in postorius, but I could not find it. Time Zone Problem In Postorius

I have the server TZ set to EST. I have the TZ for Postfix set to EST. I have the following set in my settings_local.py file: TIME_ZONE = 'America/New_York' USE_TZ = True However messages showing up in the pending moderation queue box shows UTC date. I am seeing this behavior in Affinity as well so I figured it is either a Mailman core setting or perhaps database? Can anyone shed light on that? Brian

Hi, on a fresh debian 10 (mail server) I added mailman3 with: apt-get install mailman3-full dpkg-reconfigure mailman3 dpkg-reconfigure mailman3-web The server name is webserver-A Then I log in in webserver-A/mailman3 as a superuser I created a domain for webserver-A and domain-A The I created a list-A Then I created a second domain for webserver-B and domain-B Then I added to apache config a virtual host for webserver-B I log in webserver-B as the some superuser of webserver-A and I created a list-B But when I list the lists I can see both under webserver-A and webserver-B. The some problem with archiving hyperkitty. I search internet for a while and I discovered that using FILTER_VHOST = True seems to solve the problem. >From posotrius config page: FILTER_VHOST Filter the list of available lists in Postorius and Hyperkitty depending on the domain they are being currently served from. Mailman 3 supports multiple domains in a single installation. But it doesn't work. I got err 500 form apache. Were can I find an explanation or a how to configure the system to have 2 webserver with different domains working on the some server as it was with mailman 2? P.S.: I upgrade postorius to V. 1.3.2 and djando V 2.2.12 using the packages in testing distribution. Hi, Recently a member of one of our private lists sent a message with a picture attached. Because of the large message size (23MB) it was put into the moderation queue. But since then postorius fails to open the list's page with this error: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core. Moderation Action Changed After Import

I migrated a Mailman 2 list using import21 and the list's config.pck into a Mailman 3 list. The list owner reported back that about 98% of the list members had their moderation setting changed to Reject (with notification). He said the previous moderation was the list's default which was hold for moderation. Is such a thing possible with an import job? List rename

I'm in an odd situation where I need to rename a bunch of lists. They were all created on mailman2 originally and migrated to mailman3 (very successfully, TYVM) but the names were all originally discuss-<foo>@domain and it's very confusing to be sure you're always sending to the correct <foo>. We want to completely rename the lists to <foo>-discuss@domain. These lists do not keep archives, so if I have to resort to extracting the subscriber lists and the configs and building new lists, I'm completely fine with that. Problem is, I'm really used to MM2 and config_list and could do this without thinking using those tools... that I don't have. Running MM3 3.2.2 trying to make this happen. Database deadlock when trying to delete a member.

Hi, I’ve got a strange error. I migrated from mailman 2.1 to 3 using the migration guide on the website and things have been working fine. But I’m in the process of testing the new syncmembers command to replace some inhouse mailman API code we wrote. I’ve tracked my problem down to what appears to be a deadlock in the postgresql database. When trying to delete certain users the SQL query hangs and never returns. After doing some tracing and tracking it down to the database, I enabled DB logging of all queries and saw that the following query was never returning: DELETE FROM member WHERE member.id = 166814 If I try to run it manually I get the same issue, in psql it never returns. mailman=# explain analyze DELETE FROM member WHERE member.id = 166814; [… 60 seconds passes…] ^CCancel request sent ERROR: canceling statement due to user request CONTEXT: while deleting tuple (2998,72) in relation "member" I’m just wondering if there are any commands or scripts I can run to verify the database and it’s constraints to see if there is some error in the database data? Or where you’d recommend I go from here? It only impacts the user on this specific list. If I add this user to another list and remove them, everything works fine. This is on a test system so I can do various testing. I’m trying to find the root cause so that I can verify my production system isn’t impacted by the same thing. Setup Details: OS: Oracle Linux 7 (Redhat) Installed using pip via virtualenv talking to a local pgsql database on the same box. Data was migrated from a mailman 2.1 install into mailman3 using migration instructions on the website. No digest.mmdf

I have mailman3 running now, more or less. Mailman did not send messages to my list, giving a permiission error on the digest.mmdf file, which was not there. I created the file and made list.list the owner, now it sends messages. Rejection Reason for refusing a subscription request

I was testing out the process of rejecting an incoming subscription request. Choosing the reject option for a moderated subscription request does send out a rejection notice but it gives no reason for the rejection. rest api runner not running

Hi, I have been using mailman for about ten years, now I want to move the lists to another server, I have installed mailman3 there, most of it seems to be running, but the "rest api runner" is not. Nothing is listening on port 8001. What have I missed? What do I do to start the restapi runner? Mixing Mailman 3 with AWS SES

I am moving the website www.t10.org from a private/corporate VM to AWS EC2s. For many years, t10.org has had very happy results with using Mailman 2 for its email reflector, and I have no real concerns about moving to Mailman 3. My bugbear is the fact that I need the following mixed bag of incoming email addresses to work in concert with each other to receive and handle emails. > t10(a)t10.org (Primary Mailman Reflector) > chair(a)t10.org (Mailman Reflector to direct messages to the T10 chair and his designates) * docs(a)t10.org (document posting mechanics - serviced by a small mountain of home-grown code code) * bbs(a)t10.org (other publicly accessible services - serviced by code that recalls the days when everything as done on a Bulletin Board System, BBS) My best guess is that the AWS Simple Email Service (SES) needs to sit in front of both Mailman and the home-grown code, to properly direct the incoming emails to the right places. The big worry is as follows... All available evidence read to date suggests that the default AWS installation of Mailman 3 assumes that Mailman 3 is the *only* receiver of emails in the configuration. If true, then putting SES in front of Mailman could be a Herculean challenge. Or... Hercules may have already cleaned the Augean Stables, and left behind a AWS Lambda function that can serve as a keystone puzzle piece for solving my dilemma. Mysterious Bounces Being Logged

I keep seeing bounces being recorded in logs/bounce.log that have no corresponding entry in Postfix's mail.log. For instance one address had registered about 2 dozen bounces in the past week in bounce.log and yet every single entry for this address in mail.log has a status=sent. Changing subscription address

All, I need help with this. A subscriber is a member of 14 of the lists on my system (others have more subscriptions). This member needs to change the address and is dyslexic, so I’ve been asked to help. I added the new address to her account in Django and set it as the preferred address. However, when she was subscribed, the system set her old address as the list subscription address, instead of her ‘preferred’ address. Well, I’m not sure of this as I cannot access her Settings, but that’s how it worked with one of my own addresses. Will I now have to tell her to do this for each list she is subscribed to: Select ‘Mailman Settings’ in dialog pulldown. Select one of the lists listed. Click on ‘Manage Subscription.’ In ‘Select Emai’, select the ‘Primary Address’ pulldown option Click on ‘Change email used for subscription.’ Please note that the “Global Mailman preferences’ nor the ‘Address-based preferences’ have the option to select the preferred address. I realize that once a member has an account in Django AND has preferred address set AND has selected the ‘Primary Address’ for each list, then this will be easier. However, I have 10000+ subscriptions by some 1500 members, most of whom were moved over from MM2 and have no Django accounts. Someone on list some time ago advised me that it was possible to do this easily globally. I have spent a couple of hours on the system trying to find that way but the above per-list procedure is all I found. Please make this easy, as I get these requests all the time and some, like this one, are on many lists. Yours, Allan

FILTER_VHOST not working

In /etc/mailman3/mailman-web.py I have added FILTER_VHOST = True so that only the list for the current domain are shown. But this has no effect. What's more, in hyperkitty I see at the top left the lable for the default domain, even though I am visiting from another domain. The web domains are exactly the same as the mail domans (lists.[domain].[tld]) In the Nginx config I have added location / { proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $host; proxy_pass http://localhost:8000/; [....] } to make sure that mailman3 knows from which URL it is visited. Am I overlooking something? I am using the distribution packages on Ubuntu 20.04: mailman3 3.2.2-1 mailman3-web 0+20180916-10 I see, the mailman3-web package is quite dated. Is it recommended to install via virtualenv instead? Cheers, Johannes

Because of incompatibility with the new version of a downstream library (SQLAlchemy), this release add is setting 1.3.x as the max supported version of SQLAlchemy. Even though it comes soon after 3.3.3, it has a lot of bug fixes and new features. Some notable ones are: * Email -join command now supports subscribing as digests with digest=<no|mime|plain> options being honored. * For anonymous lists, Mailman will filter all the headers except a few that can be configured using a new config option. * Mailman can do max_size checks on filtered message rather than original message (which might be larger before being filtered) * Previously deprecated --add, --del and --sync options from `mailman members` command are now removed. Their alternatives are `addmembers`, `delmembers` and `syncmembers` subcommands. * If configured, Mailman will add a report about content filtering. Problem with languages

Hey, I set up Mailman3 from the Debian-packages and got it working. But for some reason I do have a mixed setup in languages now. Some strings are in English, some are in German. The settings I changed are: in mailman.cfg [mailman] default_language: de in mailman-web.py LANGUAGE_CODE = 'de-DE' TIME_ZONE = 'Europe/Berlin' Nothing changed after restarting services. I then came across this post: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… -> but actually I do not find any of the files, ... - no mailman.po / .mo - no generate_mo.sh - no languages folders in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/mailman/messages - when searching with locate (after updatedb) no LC_MESSAGES/mailman or anything stated in the post Actually it would be fantastic to be able to choose language for the web interface / lists like on this here, but this is additional :-) just to have it in one language, this time German would be cool. Is it possible, to only show publicly (if advertised) these lists on a certain url, that are corresponding to the web host the url I accessed mailman through? I tried to configure different Web hosts with different Mail domains ... but through all the domains all mailing lists are advertised and I don't get why I then should configure different web hosts :-) Another solution for me would be, that I have only 1 Web host, don't advertise any Mailing-lists (or only certain ones) and configure different administrators for certain mail domains. But also that I don't see how it should be done :-( Sorry for the maybe nooby/newby question, but I just started trying Mailman3 and hoped for a better support for multidomain (which I till right now like in contrast to mailman2, whih has been a hazzle to register new Domains on the same server, but worked :-)). Good MM hosts for customized code?

E-Democracy.org is plotting a test move from GroupServer.org (end of life coming) to MM3. We have certain technologies we've embedded into GroupServer, like volume based posting limits on our political forums (no more than X posts in y hours per member ... typically 2 or 3 posts in 24 hours), inserting standard "who made this post" in the email footer with links to the user profile for context assuming email is forwarded as well as the web archive url to that post. We know that we do not want to be in charge of email deliverability and we don't yet have an Mailman aficionado in our volunteer team. So ideally, we'd find the right Mailman host where we can use our own selected domain (@opengroups.org perhaps) and whether we hire coders to help out with custom tech OR have volunteer coders (interested in local online communities? AKA hate that Facebook and NextDoor host most of these, let me know :-) ), we'd like to have the right set up to allow us to experiment. Advice? Thoughts? Delayed password requests & migrating users from mm2

Hi again, With my new mm3 instance, password reset email to members are being received many hours late or not at all. They seem to be sent fine and when I trigger one to one of my addresses, it works instantly. But many users report getting it many hours later or not at all (despite looking in spam and bulk folders). Anyone else experience this password reset mail delay/vanishing and/or have any suggestions for diagnosing it and resolving it? The main reason this is problematic is that in migrating lists from mm2, I've set a 'fake' password for them in the mm3 db and instructed members to reset their password to set a new one so they can access the list and update their subscription and/or subscribe to other lists (which they can also do without an account of course - but then lose the ability to use the web interface and access archives). So if, as an alternative, there is another way to get list members to access their account then I'm open to it. Cheers, Duane

Specifying hold reason: non-member, header filter number/regex

Hi, Unlike in mm2, I'm finding in mm3 that is not obvious when non-member is trying to post to the list when their subject line also has a header-filter match. All it lists is that the posting has matched a header rule (which isn't quite accurate as it is a non-member) and even when it matches a header rule it doesn't say which one (which is a noted issues in the file mailman/chains/headers.py). Anyone else noticed the same and have a solution? The relevant list setting is:: Message Acceptance > Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list: Hold for moderation Should I be editing mailman/chains/headers.py or perhaps another python file in that firstory to make the hold reason more explicit? It is actually two problems I wish to solve: 1. Show when the message is held because it is a posting by a non-member (or a moderated member, etc) 2. Show what specific header filter has caused the message to be held so I know why and/or can debug the regex to be more/less specific. Cheers, Duane

Hi. I am trying to setup postorius, but I have run into a problem. I am using the example project, except I am using postgresql instead of sqlite3. I ran python manage.py migrate which was successful. problems installing mailman3 under gentoo and upgrading mailman2 to mailman3

Hi. I am having a great deal of difficulty installing mailman3 using gentoo and sendmail. Also, I want to upgrade my old mailman2 data to mailman3. What I have done so far is to install the mailman3 packages from my repository and got this: django-mailman3 version 1.3.4, mailmanclient version 3.3.1, mailman version 3.3.2 (apparently the core), postorius version 1.3.3 and hyperkitty version 1.3.3. I also have mariadb and postgresql already installed. Now trying to read your documentation, it seems it wants me to reinstall some packages using pip in the home directory of the mailman user in a python virtual environment, that was the first thing. But I would like to avoid multiple package managers wherever possible -- gentoo is already a lot of maintainance without dealing with pip's maintainance. The binaries also seem to be different from my gentoo packages. So, how do I proceed with getting mailman3 up and working, configuring the database, configs, etc and I guess after doing that upgrading mailman2 and getting sendmail to interface properly with mailman3? Attachments in digests mails

Posterious membership listing for non-owner/moderators?

Hi, I'm configuring my new mailman3 lists and one option I wish to use is a membership listing (which list members can opt-in/out of via their preferences). The only problem is, via the web interface (Posterious / Hyperkitty) I can't find that listing when logged in as an ordinary member. Am I missing something or is this not built in yet? I have my test list setting under List Identity -> Members List Visibility set to "Only mailinglist members", but all I can find in terms of members is the side-listing of posters to the list/thread. (as usual before asking the question I explored a lot and searched the archives/documentation). Cheers, Duane

Setting for archiving multi email domains?

Hi again, I have a Debian-postfix-postgres-nginx-Hyperkitty-Postorius setup with a primary domain (e.g. primarydomain.com) and several 'secondary' domains used for email lists (e.g. emaillistA.com and emaillistB.com) When sending emails to a list using the primarydomain.com address, the email is received, sent to subscribers and archived properly. But when it is sent to one of the secondary domains like tes(a)emaillistA.com - the email doesn't seem to be sent and isn't archived - despite it being set to be. What I've tried so far (after searching these archives and looking at the documentation) is to: 1) Adding emaillistA.com and emaillistB.com to the MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_FROM setting in the settings_local.py file (and then restart mailman) 2) Adding emaillistA.com and emaillistB.com to the mydestination setting in the postfix main.cf file (and the restarting postfix). ...I even tried adding to /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 emaillistA.com and 127.0.0.1 emaillistB.com but removed it as it didn't seem appropriate there. Does anyone have any hits of what else I need to configure to get it working for these 'secondary' email domains? Cheers, Duane

Backups & disaster recovery of mailman3

Hi, So now I have a running mailman3 installation. Whew... Is there documentation of things like thorough backups and disaster recovery? I haven't yet found it. Backups: Obviously, I understand that I need to have datbase (mysql, in my case) dumps, and I'll have file system backups onto something that our IT folks will backup. Is there more I should think of? Disaster recovery: So, let's say my server (which is cloud-y) gets trashed and I need to get mailman back on a new server. Is this process described somewhere? Importing issue from mailman2 to mailman3

Hi, I'm in the process of moving 1400-ish lists from a very old mailman2 installation to an installation on Ubuntu 18.04 with the version of mailman3 packaged for that distro. (Yes, that was a mistake, but I'm committed at this point.) Most of it's going fine, as best I can see. I've imported a list from Mailman2 and had the owner send a message for testing purposes. His message are moderated per the list configuration. The message is delivered to Mailman3 and shows that it's being held. However if we attempt to view the message in Postorius web UI then an error is thrown. In the web interface the error is simply "Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core." But Mailman Core is running and we can do other functions just fine. Our superuser account receives a much more detailed message with the subject below. [Django] ERROR (EXTERNAL IP): Service Unavailable: /postorius/lists/cpa-announcement.caltech.edu/held_messages Does "Service Unavailable" mean I'm missing something in the configuration? postfix malformed address with confirm replies

Set Postorius interface locale

Hi everyone, Thanks to Brian I'm up and running with my migrated mailman3 lists and am now starting to get into customising the interface (styling and content). I've been trying to figure out how to set/change the Postorius locale - I specifically want to change some text strings on the info page without breaking the i18n mechanisms. I've worked with po and mo files before, so changing and compiling them isn't a problem. The problems I've encountered so far are: 1) Where do I set the local of the Postorius interface? 2) Individual lists have a language setting, but it doesn't seem to reflect what the Postorius locales are as the only english option is "English (USA)" and none of the other English speaking locales and on the file system there is no en-us PO files....so I suspect I'm looking in the wrong place. Am I looking at this all wrong? The documentation doesn't seem to have any info about this and yet the mechanisms seem to be there. Once I learn more I'm quite keen to start working on improving the documentation based on what I learn. Cheers, Duane

Moderation emails

Hi Folks, Whenever a non-member posts to a members-only list, the owners (because I haven't set any moderators) get a 3-part MIME message, from the xxx-owner email address. The first part is the template from .../mailman/templates/en/list:admin:action:post.txt The second part is a message/rfc822 copy of the held message. The third part is another message/rfc822 part that says, If you reply to this message, keeping the Subject: header intact, Mailman will discard the held message. Do this if the message is spam. If you reply to this message and include an Approved: header with the list password in it, the message will be approved for posting to the list. The Approved: header can also appear in the first line of the body of the reply. This is really confusing, as replying to the whole message will go to the '-owner' not the '-request' address, which will neither discard nor authorise the message, and will not contain the subject: heading from the encapsulated message. Is there any easy way, either to turn off generation of the third message, or make it so that acting on the message (hitting reply in your email client) will actually discard the message? Peter C

postorius / adjusted settings menu

Hi together, I want to adjust the settings menu to reduce to the options really needed. The easiest way would be to edit src/postorius/views/list* but I don't think that's a good idea. So what comes to my mind is to have some variable in the configuration that contains the menu items and - if set - the submenus. E.g. the following: { 'list_identity': ['!gateway_to_mail', '!gateway_to_news', '!linked_newsgroup', '!newsgroup_moderation', '!nntp_prefix_subject_too' ], 'automatic_responses', 'alter_messages', 'dmarc_mitigations', 'digest', 'message_acceptance', 'archiving', 'subscription_policy', 'bounce_processing' } would express: default menu and just remove the mentioned items. Of course, something like ['advertised', 'description', 'info', 'display_name', 'subject_prefix'] would work as well. Resorting should also be possible, so something like { 'list_identity': ['advertised', 'description', 'info', 'personalize'] } would give a very small list of items to select from. Hyperkitty "All Threads" results in error

So I have been wrestling with this problem for a while now. Most times, but not every time, when someone clicks on the All Threads link in hyperkitty, a 500 error is generated. I googled it, obviously, and at first I thought it was related to this issue, but that has not proven to be the case: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… <https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/…> I’ve attached a “backtrace” below. The archives were imported from a previous mm3 install a couple of months ago. The problem occurs even with a list state full of immediately recent posts. How to disable subscribe by mail in mailman3?

Hello, I've setup a mailman3 for an organization. Organization members are authenticated by an LDAP backend and can thus use the web UI to subscribe. To avoid unnecessary moderation, I'd like to disable subscription by mail but still allow subscription through the web interface. (I've already hacked some code to dissallow subscribe by mail through posteros.) Regards, Thomas
