I've been playing with the voting system on a couple of lists (this one included). There are some weird behaviours I've noticed: * votes are frequently not immediately reflected - a page reload is required * some votes display as: 0 0 You dislike it (cancel) Here we see I've voted on a message, but the counts are still zero up and zero down. I just down-voted one of my posts as a test, and nothing changed in the page to reflect the vote. Often it takes multiple clicks, sometimes a page reload. Clicking "Back to thread" shows my message and: > 0 0 You dislike it (cancel) I don't think I've ever seen reliable voting on any MM3 site, including this one (I don't think I've seen zero / zero You {like|dislike} it (cancel) here, but multiple vote attempts to see the results is not unusual). Searching the archive shows something from ~6-7 years ago where caching was modified, seems relevant but nothing since. Am I alone in this, or is the feature so unused that nobody else noticed this?

Problem upgrading from 2.1 to 3, dockerized

I recently followed the instructions here https://github.com/g4rf/dockerized-mailcow-mailman, and was able to create a new Mailman 3, Debian-based installation. I then followed the instructions here https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html in order to migrate from my old, Centos-based installation, to the new, Debian-based installation. It seemed to work well, but unfortunately a problem showed up. mailman addmember/syncmember commands print undecoded UTF-8 [ADD] or [DEL] mail addresses in its messages like "[ADD] =?utf-8?q?John_=....."

My post here is merely about the information output when running mailman addmembers/syncmembers where I discovered strange looking lines. I noticed that addmember and syncmember output looks like [ADD] =?utf-8?q?John_=28Foo=29_Doe_=5Bcomment1=5D_=5Bcomment2=5D?= <john.foo.doe(a)example.com> whereas the entries in the Web-GUI look fine. I triple-checked the textfile from which the names stem from, yes, the file is UTF8. Is this behaviour of addmember/syncmember command output commonly known - or is this a small cosmetic bug? PS. At some moment I had, probably from my test and legay data file, also these codings in about fifty entries of my users lists, but deleted that users with a small script, so that user list is now clean. My post here is merely about the information output when running mailman addmembers/syncmembers.

clearing pending db

I have an admittedly out-of-date installation of Mailman 3.3 (3.3.2 Tom Sawyer) but it's been working without issues for a long time, so I haven't had much incentive to bring it up to date. Sorry! A couple of my larger mailing lists (around 500 members) are currently very slow when making changes through the UI (maybe that's my raison-to-update). They also both have very large lists of members "pending confirmation." My suspicion is that the large pending list is slowing down other operations. But pendingdb.evict() doesn't seem to clear the list. @Mark & Stephen, now, where here everything appears to run smoothly on a new server, I want to change the testmail.domain (domain1) settings to mail.domain (domain2) settings. It would be a great help, if this can be done by python script respectively a mailman3 shell script. Is there any on your desk, or can you help me? I already defined in mailman/admin (django admin) that new target domain. I guess, at the end, there might also be a very changes in mailman.cfg and settings.py necessary.

Main daemon process sticks around after forking

Hello, I'm running a (rather large) mailman3 instance on Debian 13 (trixie) using the distribution packages. To manage the mailman3 daemon, the package installs this systemd service unit: https://sources.debian.org/src/mailman3/3.3.10-2/debian/mailman3.service/ It has been working fine until recently: after a reboot, we noticed the mailman3 unit consistently failing to start due to a timeout error. I figured out that the timeout was related to the service unit type (Type=forking) and the fact that the main/parent process was forking subprocesses (and running normally), writing a PID file, but it wasn't exiting, so systemd identifies this as an error and aborts the service. Since switching to Type=simple, it has been working fine. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen such behavior and how I could troubleshoot it. Thanks! -- Jérôme

I use the following REST-API sequence (excerpt:) to create a list but want to use the much quicker command line. However, only a few [OPTIONS] can be set via command line. Why? My wish is to have all options available in the command line of mailman? Held messages not delivered after approval

Hi all, I'm running into an issue with Mailman 3. Mails sent to a list are being held due to moderation settings — which is expected — but after approving them, they are not delivered to list members. The message does not end up in the shunt queue, and nothing is delivered. Whitelist in mailman3: How to allow only ~400 e-mail senders in a file whitelist to send to a list?

In mailman2, it was quite handy to place "@whitelist" into the field sender/accept_these_nonmembers, when such a file has been set up. How can I (per list or programmatically) define the ~400 e-mail senders to be allowed to send to my about 30 lists? And, yes, I already searched for a solution of this problem, but could not find any.

Some member preferences - such as hide_address - cannot be set with the [OPTIONS] in the command line. I suggest to modify the code so that all member preferences can be set via the command line. What do you think? This is how I currently patch (some) member preferences (hide_address is a variable here) in a python script, but this takes a lot of time, depending on the number of users.... Hello, I have a venv installation of: mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web I just did a pip install -U --upgrade-strategy eager When running mailman-web runjobs -l I get the following Warning: System check identified some issues: WARNINGS: ?: settings.ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD is deprecated, use: settings.ACCOUNT_LOGIN_METHODS = {'email', 'username'} I guess this is from allauth (version django-allauth-65.4.1). Changing ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD to ACCOUNT_LOGIN_METHODS in /etc/mailman3/settings.py is not enough. Advice on how to set announcement only lists?

Here's the basics of what I'm trying to set up: The Web UI is not available. CLI tools are being used for configuration and ongoing maintenance functions. The server instance is ephemeral, but has persistent storage for postfix / mailman configuration. There are a series of notification lists list-0000(a)example.com, list-0001(a)example.com, etc. Users can subscribe / unsubscribe via email. A list-all(a)example.com list can be used to send posts to all lists (this is rare). A siteadmin(a)example.com email address is the only sender allowed to post to any list. A list-admin(a)example.com list is defined. This list should be copied on all posts that are sent to any of the notification lists. The admin list membership is maintained via CLI tools by list admins Below are a couple of ideas I've played around with, but haven't gotten a good solution. Suggestions would be welcome. I've had a little experience with the CLI tools, but I'm not having luck with trying to add non-members. Idea 1 Have list-all(a)example.com be an umbrella list with all notifications lists as members. list-admin(a)example.com is added to all lists as a member siteadmin(a)example.com is added to all notification lists as a member with moderation_action = Action.defer to allow sending posts. ues-all(a)example.com is added to all notification lists as a member with moderation_action = Action.defer to allow "nested" sending to members of the list-all list. There seem to be issues with having the senders as members of the list. Having them as non-members might be a solution, but I haven't yet figured out how to add non-members via CLI. Idea 2 Use cron with CLI tools to extract all notification list members and update (mailman syncmembers) the list-all membership. Use script to add all list-admin users to each notification list. Update all notification lists when the list-admin membership changes. Upgrading other python packages than the mailman ones in a venv results in dependency conflicts

Hello, I know this should be the way to upgrade: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/upgrade-guide.html I have 3.3.10 installed. I saw that some python packages are outdated an tried this which install all outdated packages in a row: pip list --outdated --format=json | jq '.[].name' | xargs -n1 pip install -U One outdated package was django and this part happened: ------------------------------- vDownloading Django-5.1.4-py3-none-any.whl (8.3 MB) Installing collected packages: Django Attempting uninstall: Django Found existing installation: Django 4.2.16 Uninstalling Django-4.2.16: Successfully uninstalled Django-4.2.16 ERROR: pip's dependency resolver does not currently take into account all the packages that are installed. This behaviour is the source of the following dependency conflicts. hyperkitty 1.3.12 requires django<5.1,>=4.2, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. mailman-web 0.0.9 requires django<4.3,>=4.0, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. postorius 1.3.13 requires django<5.1,>=4.2, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. django-mailman3 1.3.15 requires django<5.1,>=4.2, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. Successfully installed Django-5.1.4 ------------------------------- So I made a roll back. Missing Archived emails - Hyperkitty - CERT Issue

Looks like "hyperkitty" stopped archiving right after the CERT for the mailman3 website expired, How can I make the missing archives visible on the website? I see there "*pck" files in the/opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/hyperkitty/spool/ directory. PGP - S/MIME signed messages

Hi * we are receiving a few PGP-signed posts as a S/MIME attachment. Some final recipients check these, and as mailman3 does not munge them - the original mail is signed, not mailman3's final posts - those get rejected. Does anyone have a idea how to handle this elegantly? Thank you Peter

Relay Access Denied

I have recently migrated my lists from an old mailman2 server to a new mailman3 server. The new server is named listservnew and the old server is called lists. Everything is working on the new server using the new name, but after changing the DNS of lists to point to the new server, I am getting Relay Access Denied. We are running this through an F5 and the RCPT from unknown is the F5 IP address. When I add that IP to the main.cf under mynetworks, I get a different error. Enforcing SSO and subscription options

Contrary to the messages I found in the archive, rather trying to delete or remove the social login portion of the sign in page, I'm looking to see if there's any way to isolate the third-party login section and prevent local account sign in and sign up. This way, we can ensure that the people within our organization are using a stronger auth method that prioritizes MFA, rather than just username/password. To do this, our plan is to block signups using "ACCOUNT_ADAPTER = 'django_mailman3.views.user_adapter.DisableSignupAdapter'" and to remove the portions of the login template such that the username/password/forgot password fields are removed, leaving just the button to our SSO instance. I'm anticipating that this should be sufficient to block username/password sign ins, and is resistant to page manipulation due to CSRF tokens, but I wanted to ask to see if there was a better way, like an official configuration (which I have not found yet). I did see that there is the SOCALACCOUNT_ONLY option, as provided by allauth (https://docs.allauth.org/en/latest/socialaccount/configuration.html) but that broke any attempt to display the sign in page, and I'm assuming is not supported with the current version of MM3. Is my plan to modify the templates viable? Additionally, because external users would not have access to their own dashboards within the web UI, and since we are planning on disabling anonymous subscriptions with "SHOW_ANONYMOUS_SUBSCRIBE_FORM=False", the only two viable ways to subscribe to a list for them would be: 1) Send a request directly to the list owner or a superadmin to subscribe/unsubscribe the address 2) Allow email commands to subcribe/unsubscribe users (i.e. $LISTNAME-join@$DOMAIN) Given the discussions on disabling the anonymous subscription form, are the email commands a less spam-susceptible solution or are they just as vulnerable as the form? Mailman appears to send an email to a closed list, from a member who was removed from that list

My project is doing testing of our mailing lists and came across what appears to be a bug. I believe it's not but she insists that it is. So before I do a bunch of research I wanted to post my steps to reproduce and ask for input. I'm including the full (redacted) mailing list config at the bottom of this post for reference. * I have a closed mailing list, acme-closed(a)foo.com * That mailing list has multiple subscribers, including user-1. I confirmed this by shelling into our server and running `mailman members acme-closed(a)foo.com --role=any` on the OS command line. This showed all of the subscribers, including user-1. * I sent an mail FROM user-1 TO acme-closed, and it was received. And by that I mean I received an email TO acme-closed, FROM user-1. I also received the same email emails sent to the other subscribers since I use a catch all address for local testing. * In our system I closed user-1's account (which removes that user from the mailing list). I confirmed this by running the `mailman members` command and noting that user-1 was no longer a subscriber. * I sent another mail FROM user-1 TO acme-closed, and received two emails. One showed what appears to be a successful send to the mailing list. It showed acme-closed as the TO address, and user-1 as the sender. But I also received a second email TO user-1 FROM acme-closed whose body reads "Your message to the Acme-closed mailing-list was rejected for the following reasons: The message is not from a list member. The original message as received by Mailman is attached." So my PM is insistent that the first email is proof that there's a bug. "No e-mail sent from an e-mail address for a closed account should be sent to the mailing list." I on the other hand am arguing that the second email is proof that the email _wasn't_ actually sent to the list, and was instead a sort of bounceback to the user, However it's tough to argue with her logic because I agree the first email seems to have been incorrectly sent. Hi there, we have just started with internal tests around Mailman3 before we want to use it productively. Our instance runs on a virtualised Debian server. We have now started to work with the templates and created a new template ‘list:user:action:subscribe.txt’ under /var/lib/mailman3/templates/site/de. Unfortunately, we can't find out how to customise the subject of the email. Can anyone help us here? Regards Johannes

I forgot to include the mailing list in a reply to Stephen and I wantied to follow up here in case what I learned is helpful to others. One of the things Stephen suggested was that postfix was filtering the headers. That was true in my case. The configuration code I inherited had the following lines in /etc/postfix/header_checks /^List-Unsubscribe:/ IGNORE /^List-Subscribe:/ IGNORE > How are you capturing mail at postfix? For capturing the email at postifx I used the following steps I found on another website to defer SMTP sending so I could look at emails while they were "in process" by postfix. postconf -e defer_transports=smtp; postfix reload # send the email to the server mailq # Use ID from mailq to examine the email using postcat postcat -vq C23D82B60024 # Re-enable SMTP sending postconf -e defer_transports=; postfix reload; postfix flush As for the question about debugging in rfc-2369.py, I did have additional log.debug calls in the "process" method, but was not seeing anything from them. Perhaps they were not getting called as Stephen suggested. Stephen also mentioned in a private email to me about RFC 8058 "One-Click Leave" which is intended to make it easier for folks to unsubscribe from lists. We don't have an implementation in Mailman 3 yet, but it looks like a reasonable protocol (ie, not that easy to abuse, though not impossible). New Lists Appear in HyperKitty Archives, But No Mail Data is Shown

Hello, I have been troubleshooting an issue with our Mailman 3 archives. I have made a key observation that has helped narrow down the problem. While a newly created list appears in the HyperKitty archives, no email data is shown inside that list. *Problem:* When I create a new mailing list in Mailman Core and then visit the HyperKitty archives, the list is correctly displayed. However, when I send an email to that list, no mail data (messages) are shown inside it. Displaying addresses in emails from a Mailman 3 installation

In a list I administer, the From line in an incoming email shows [Poster's Name] via [List Name] <address for posting a reply> . I use Outlook as my client, but at least some other clients behave similarly. However, I have at least one subscriber who uses Mozilla's Thunderbird as his client, and periodically the format changes to something else, most recently to just [List Name <address for posting a reply> . I suspect this occurs from some combination of the way Thunderbird parses the header and the way it populates some kind of address book that makes autofill work, but I'm not sure. Is this a known problem? Is there an easy fix that will be stable? In the past, putting an association in his address book and removing others worked, but it didn't hold and he is frustrated.

Caching problem with templates. GNU Mailman 3.3.10 Python 3.11.2 Postorius Version 1.3.13 Venv installation per docs Hi All, A footer template is created and initially it works as expected. Editing the footer template sees the new content written to the database, In addition to viewing the edited content in the database, the new template can also be viewed in Lynx on localhost at: http://localhost:8000/mailman3/api/templates/list/<IDENTIFIER>/list:member:regular:footer The problem is that the original template is being cached somewhere and the old footer persists in new emails. In trying to get the edited footer to show in the emails I've restarted mailman3/mailmanweb, rebooted the server - but no joy. Any advice on how to flush the cache or hammer this gremlin greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Greetings, Is it possible to redirect the -bounces alias of a specific list so that it also goes to a person, in addition to the normal bounces processing for that list? In Mailman2, I know that I could do that by modifying the aliases table. I've been poking around in Mailman3, but haven't managed to figure out which container I need to be looking at. And rather than keep spinning, I figured that I'd ask the hive mind, since I'm sure one of you can quickly point me to the correct location. Change the default value for the General Archive Policy

Dear list, currently, when I create a new mailing list with MM3 the value for "Archive policy" is always set to "Public archives". I'd like to change the default value for "Archive policy" to "Do not archive this list". How can I do this? Creating users via RestAPI / User-Management - a bunch of questions

Dear Mark and companions, somehow I can not cope with the user management... (I am running a venv-installation, latest stable versions) I read this manual: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/… and played with the RestAPI calls... I know about the fine grained differences between user and member, admin/owner, superuser... and about the two user databases in PostgreSQL and Django-Framework. What I stumble upon is the RestAPI calls to create a "working" user (with the ability to login via WebUI). When I follow the manual (from the url above) I create a user (including password) that appears in the PostgreSQL database. (And this user is visible on the User-URL (https://example.com/mailman3/users)) Even when I (via WebUI) set the user as "approved" this user is not able to log in... I assume this restriction is in accordance to the fact that there is not equivalent Django user. (There was a mail in the archive of the MM3 user group...stating that one has to use the Django RestAPI to create the appropriate user) When I create the user using the WebUI (https://example.com/accounts/signup/?next=/mailman3/lists/) the new user is created in the right (complete) way...appearing in the PostgreSQL database and as a user in Django. How is this sync between the two databases realized? (The Django user also has the correct status (no staff status / no superuser status / just active status) how is this realized?) As I am not very familiar with python programming (I know Perl/Java/C++ and have an (maybe outdated) concept of OOP), is there a quick way to implement this kind of sync by copying the register logic from mailman's python action script for registering? Other questions: Will there be a create_admin_user-script that is callable via CLI (like createsuperuser or create_list)? (This script ought create a user in PostgreSQL and as Django user) How will a social account provider (like oidc) linkage (in Django) fit in this concept? Will oidc-accounts be copied to the Django's user database (or PostgreSQL db) or is it an on-the-fly check against the oidc-provider? (I assume second option) What are the status-flags (staff status/superuser status/active status) of the linked oidc-accounts? (Can I specify the status flags?) A conceptual thought: When "user1" (with email user1(a)example.com) is known to django via oidc linkage and I create "user1" (also with email user1(a)example.com) via RestAPI calls (following the url https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…) do I have a "complete" user then? two signatures on sent mail?

Hi, I am a very non-savvy mailman list user. I am trying to set up a list via cPanel but when I send emails there are two signatures. One is my usual signature and the other, below, is appended by Mailman and includes an http link to a non-existent page on my website. How do I strip the auto signature, just leaving my own? I use Mailman via cPanel on two separate hosting accounts. One works fine and this new one attaches the list address. I can't see what I did differently with the first! any help gratefully received Kate

footer template priority

It seems templates can be configured in the filesystem or via postorius. When I place a footer template in the filesystem it worked fine. Then without adjusting any configuration, without removing that, I tried to use the postorius control panel to add a footer template, which ends up in the database, both the core and web databases. But emails stop getting sent out. Emails were posted into Hyperkitty, but not mailed out via postfix. Whatever system logs I have access to, I have checked. There are no apparent errors anyplace. Perhaps I didn't look in the right places. The problematic email arrives, is posted to Hyperkitty, but isn't emailed out to subscribers. As if the template broke something. I remove the template from the postorius UI. Those queued emails are instantly sent! The template said "test content". No variables. I checked on the server for "queued emails" and did not find those either, in postfix or mailman. Mysterious. The phenomenon is repeatable on this server. Add a footer template, emails stop.

Hi, after installing Mailman 3 in a new virtual environment, I ran into the compatibility issues with django-allauth discussed by Andreas Vetter and Mark Sapira on this list in February[1] and in March[2] – WARNINGS: settings.ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD is deprecated, use: settings.ACCOUNT_LOGIN_METHODS = {'email', 'username'} settings.ACCOUNT_EMAIL_REQUIRED is deprecated, use: settings.ACCOUNT_SIGNUP_FIELDS = ['email*', 'username*', 'password1*', 'password2*'] – and solved them with the additions to /etc/mailman3/settings.py suggested by Mark: del ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD ACCOUNT_LOGIN_METHODS = {'email', 'username'} del ACCOUNT_EMAIL_REQUIRED ACCOUNT_SIGNUP_FIELDS = ['email*', 'username*', 'password1*', 'password2*'] In the second list thread, Mark linked to the current (patched) version of mailman-web's mailman.py[3], which addresses the deprecation of ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD, but not of ACCOUNT_EMAIL_REQUIRED. I'm having problems installing mailman3 following the instructions on https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html Everything goes well until I get to the Installing Mailman Core<https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#installing-mail…> step, which has me do the following in my venv environment: (venv)$ pip install wheel mailman psycopg2-binary Ubuntu 24.04.02 LTS Python 3.12.3 pip version 24.0 First, I was getting problems because my company firewall was blocking outbound traffic. I got that taken care of. Hi, I've spent hours on finding the error but no success. I hope you can help: I am running Debian with older version of mailman3 (3.3.3) and postfix (3.5). Postfix on its own is working fine. I set up mailman, created a site/domain (lists.yyy.com) My hostname is host.xxx.com . My IP has a RDNS entry: reverse.rrr.com . When I send an email to my mailing list mylist(a)lists.yyy.com I receive an error email. The logfile says the following: ... "to" Headers for Non-Anonymous lists

Hello, At the request of a list owner, we changed the settings on a list to "Anonymous = No" so that list members could see who a message was coming from. It seems a side effect of the setting is that users are now using "reply-to" and some messages are going out to the list addressed in the manner below. "Last Name, First Name via list-name <list-name(a)caltech.edu>" The list owner feels this is confusing and some members may inadvertently email the list when they intend to email the individual. I understand this is likely a client side caching issue since most email clients create an index of contacts based on previously received emails. Aside from reverting back to "Anonymous = Yes", is there any setting we can change at the list level to force the "to" field to persist as the list email address? Thank you. When I as an admin invite someone to join a list through the web interface, this is the email the invitee receives. Note that it doesn't even have the Description from List Settings > List Identity. Threads by month dropdown

Hi, After running hyperkitty_import to import thousands of emails from mailman2 (the years 2013-2025) I then ran another import for years 2004-2013 from another mbox file. It was an entirely earlier timeframe, which may be relevant. After the first import, the "Threads by month" dropdown showed 2013-2025. After the second import, the "Threads by month" dropdown showed 2013-2025. That is, 2004-2013 are missing. I have tried various things, including the mailman3-web cron maintenance tasks, waiting a day, and rebooting the server to clear memory. All messages were imported, and can be seen in "All threads". The messages are there. The only problem is the "Threads by month" dropdown. Beyond the dropdown, everything seems fine. Could it be a bug? Should I open an issue? Or, what should I try next? Is there a "refresh all threads by month" specific task? Deleting all archives and importing the older messages first... that worked correctly. It is a large destructive actions though, should that count as the official solution? Detour: While debugging it seemed to be an interesting question whether the mailman3-web periodic cron tasks had been running, and if those tasks affected the hyperkitty import. Referring to "Cron Jobs for Mailman Web" https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#cron-jobs-for-m… Those instructions are not dumping stdout/stderr to a log file, nor rotating the log files. What is your opinion if I sent a pull request that adds "Method 2 - Advanced", and include logging for the crons. Or maybe I am missing something. Is the output of the cron tasks getting logged in your environment?

What is the best practice creating lists triggered by a another / second system?

Dear MM-Users, after reading a lot in the projects documentation of mailman3 I am not sure how to set up a "connection" between another system/server (running a self-service portal for our users) and the mailman3 server (venv-installation) for creating lists (giving a list owner's email address and a customized list style, given by name). On our old mailman-2.1 instance I used an ssh-tunnel and triggered the newlist-command with appropriate parameters. This seems a little bit outdated to me - nowadays... ;-) So I read about the rest api of mailman3 and thought, I might give it a go... On the other hand the rest api should not be exposed externally (localhost-only) as said here: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… Running an nginx reverse proxy (and a firewall for the complete subnet) I am able to give dedicated access to the api but nevertheless I have no good feeling going this way... So my question is: What would be the best way to trigger creation of lists using a second system? Thank you for any suggestions! Chris

Hi, Sometimes not sure if it's preferable to open a gitlab issue, or chat on the mailing list. I have run a large archive import into mailman3/hyperkitty. After that's done, waited a day, for scheduled cron jobs to complete. In "All Threads", all the email archives are present. The import worked. In "RECENTLY ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS" on the main page, it says: RECENTLY ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS No discussions this month (yet). Nothing there. That means if I direct users to visit the site, the page, it appears empty. That's too bad. :-) It should display recent emails. What would affect this feature during an archive import? Is it a problem with the import script itself, or with a scheduled cron job, or something else? Would you expect "Recently active discussions" be empty when very recent archives do exist? Hello, if you look at this graph you'll notice how my VPS "reacted" after mailman3 install. It's a Debian stable host, and I installed packages via apt. I mean, isn't this a bit too much for a software that is idle, because no lists are currently in use? RED is my VPS, the other colors are other machines. Unable to update templates

Hi, I'm unable to update the custom welcome template (list:user:notice:welcome) after it's initial creation. When the custom welcome template is created (in Postorius), and a user then subscribed by the list-owner (using mass subscribe), the welcome message is received as expected. However when I update the template, the databases are updated correctly but the Welcome message is still sent with the old template content. mailman.templates mailmanweb.postorius_emailtemplate Additionally, if I delete the template and create a new one the old content still gets sent. I cannot find where this content is written or is being cached. Any clues on tracking this bugbear down gratefully received. Afterall it turned out that my mailman.db was somehow broken, even though I couldn't find any fishy / strange things in Postorius. Since anyhow just a few lists are hosted on the server and subscriptions for most of them being managed fron another program, I decided to remove MM3 completely and start with a fresh configuration. Dear mailman community, with the help of you I was able to set up a new mailman3 environment (a big THANK YOU!!! :-)): OS: Ubuntu 24.04-LTS mailman: GNU Mailman 3.3.10 (Tom Sawyer) Python: 3.12.3 (main, Feb 4 2025, 14:48:35) [GCC 13.3.0] Method: Python Virtual Environment Installation My configuration files are placed in the following directory: /etc/mailman3 - gunicorn.py - mailman.cfg - settings.py The environment is up and running: A list for testing is set up and mails are transfered (and archived) using the test-list - successfully... :-) Looking at the thread overview of the list (in Hyperkitty archives) I realized that the shown date format is unusual (for Germany), like: Do Mai 22, 3:57 nachm. (meaning: Thu May 22, 3:57 p.m.) I would prefer a format like: 22-05-2025 15:57:24 So I tried to reconfigure this setting in settings.py according to this URL: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/config-web.html#configure-postorius-hyp… In settings.py I set DATETIME_FORMAT to 'd-m-Y H:i:s' but the format did not change. (After changing settings.py I initiated a restart of mailman3 and mailmanweb) I also set USE_L10N to False as suggested in Django-Docs: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/3.1/ref/settings/#std:setting-DATETIME_FO… My /etc/mailman3/settings.py is parsed - as far as I can say because changing USE_I18N to false (in /etc/mailman3/settings.py) switches date to English as this is my locales-setting on Ubuntu... Hi, The place holders listed as available on the "Add new template" page are: $hyperkitty_url $listname $list_id: $display_name $short_listname: $domain $info $request_email $owner_email $site_email $language The only one that seems to sort of work on my template is $list_id - which displays as "testlist". (I was expecting to see "testlist(a)example.com"). The others just get displayed as a variable. Eg. $owner_email Have I missed a setting somewhere? list's RSS feed has wrong URLs (base path instead of subdomain)

MM broken after proxy migration (Nginx -> Caddy)

Hi, I've been running MM 3 for quite some time, with a couple of lists including members managed via the REST-API from an external program. After some issues with LetsEncrypt certificates, I migrated the HTTPs proxy from previous Nginx now to Caddy with the following Caddyfile: https://listen.dlc-aachen.de { header Strict-Transport-Security max-age=31536000; # Disable access to archive and registration redir /hyperkitty* https://listen.dlc-aachen.de redir /accounts/signup* https://listen.dlc-aachen.de reverse_proxy localhost:8000 { header_up X-Forwarded-Proto {scheme} header_up X-Forwarded-Host {host} } handle_path /static/* { file_server { root /var/lib/mailman3/web/static } } } Following this change, list continued operation as usual, but after a few days it seemed to be attacked via it's GUI, according to the attached Django error message. Since then mailman doesn't send out anymore mails and I have a persistent master.lck file. Furthermore, during mailman start smtp.log always shows a "Connection lost during _handle_client()". I guess the connection loss is related to the master.lck file, hence how can I get rid of it / "reset" mailman? In addion, should I include further directives in my Caddyfile in order to protect mailman from coming attacks? Thx a lot Andreas

Hi, I running Debian bookworm and have installed mailman3-full (+ postfix). I am new to mailman3 (using mailman2 now) and about exploring how to migrate. I had 3 sites or domains: example.com and two real ones. When I received emails from postorius, then it came from example.com which is nonsense as I worked with the real lists. So I deleted example.com. When I call https://.../mailman3/admin or any of the lists, the result is: Server error An error occurred while processing your request. How can I get out of it? This is only a test environment, so no heart attack. Thank you for any help. Florian.

Moderation -- implicit destination behavior

Hi. We have noticed some posts being held for moderation (even though user has permission to post to list) and Mailman reports: moderation_reasons: ['Message has implicit destination’] The lists are configured for “require_explicit_destination”. However, the email address of the list is clearly in the CC: header of the email (no alias or subdomain). Is there some other reason why Mailman would hold an email for moderation with the reason of “implicit destination”? This moderation is not consistent for same list and poster. The emails come from a large domain with multiple load-balancing email servers. I suspect that it may be something with one or more of the servers being misconfigured, but unable to see anything obvious from the headers and confused why Mailman states the reason to be implicit destination when that does not seem to be the cause. Execute assorted Mailman functions via Mailman shell terminal

When my company migrated from MM2 to MM3, they discovered there were things that didn't work as expected (don't get me started). So they developed a set of Python functions which allowed then to fill in the missing functionality. However, they've discovered that some of those functions either never worked properly, or no longer work. For example, ``` def list_nonmembers(mlist): for accepted in mlist.accept_these_nonmembers: print("Accepted: ",accepted) for held in mlist.hold_these_nonmembers: print("Held: ",held) ``` They're run by shelling into the machine which hosts mailman and executed like so (where scripts is `scripts.py`) ``` sudo -iu mailman mailman shell -l MAILING_LIST_ID --run scripts.list_nonmembers ``` I'm recommending that we install Postorius, as I suspect many of the functions they've written are already present in that UI, but it's not as simple as that. Instead they're wanting a handful of these functions (including the one listed above) replaced sooner than we could get Postorius up and running. I've gotten this far: ``` from mailman.interfaces.listmanager import IListManager from zope.component import getUtility mylist_id = 'bravo-open1(a)tena-sda.org' list_manager = getUtility(IListManager) mylist = list_manager.get(mylist_id) ``` The mylist variable is of type `mailman.model.mailinglist.MailingList`, and includes an Attributes for nonmembers: ``` mylist.nonmembers <mailman.model.roster.NonmemberRoster object at 0x7ffffa3e65b0> ``` But this nonmembers property doesn't output any users/addresses when printed, and throws a TypeError when I try to iterate over it: ``` Traceback (most recent call last): File "<console>", line 1, in <module> TypeError: 'NonmemberRoster' object is not iterable ``` So, given a mailing list instance, retrieved via `list_manager.get(mylist_id)`, how would I go about printing all nonmembers and their current roles in a list (held, accepted, etc.)? Mass subscription and Delivery mode/status

Hello all, we run a venv installation of "mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web". When I mass subscribe (pre-verified) a new mail address into a list, the Delivery mode appears as Regular in /mailman3/lists/somelist.example.com/members/member/ That is what I expect. When I click on the new mail address from there, i.e. mailman3/lists/somelist.example.com/members/options/eimer@mail.org?role=mem… the Delivery status is ----- instead of Enabled and the Delivery mode is ----- instead of Regular. In fact, all yes/no radio buttons are unset. This is unexpected. What does ----- mean in that case? Is it unset and some default (from the list?) is used? The mm3 instance is actually not reachable (Incoming) but can send (Outgoing), as is the desired state to be (we intend to swap IPs during change of systems). A. Verify Incoming To verify that emails send to the MTA (postfix) get properly handled and handed over to the mm3-instance i tried to substitute incoming email by a) swaks utility [1] (fail) b) telnet utility [2] (fail) c) command ''mailman inject'' [3] (success) With c) i copied a former generate testmail-file to the mm3-host and injected it directly to my testlist (leaving out the MTA). With a) and b) i tried to hand over a testmail via CLI to the MTA (postfix) what resulted in the error: "Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table" B. /etc/postfix/main.cfg A search in mailman-users(a)mailman3.org archives [4] pointed me to the configuration of postfix as MTA [5], especially settings with the 'local_recipients_maps' parameter that should be set like [5]: local_recipient_maps = proxy:unix:passwd.byname $alias_maps hash:/path-to-mailman/var/data/postfix_lmtp what i did / already had done. C. aliasing, restarting services and test without , I then restarted postfix, rebuilt the postfix aliases (command ''newaliases'') and rebuilt the mailman aliases (command ''mailman aliases''), even tried with space-separation instead of coma-separation [6], testet again with same result. Dear Users, I'm trying to use acceptable_aliases for a specific list; Setting is also active; # curl -s -q --user restadmin:..... http://localhost:8001/3.1/lists/postmaster@domain/config | jq { "acceptable_aliases": [ "abuse@domain" ], However venv/data/postfix_lmtp does not contain abuse@domain, so postfix rejects the mail. Log Owner/Moderator actions ban address matching.

Dear All, In Mailman 3, is there any way we can log the Owner/Moderator actions like moderator "x" approved the posting on list(a)example.com? Also, I have configured some local ban lists and some global ban lists as per my organization's policy. In my setup, I observed that when someone from the ban list posts to the list, that posting goes into a blackhole without leaving any trace. I may have made some configuration mistakes, but can we log the ban list matching or generate a notification if some postings match the ban list? Regards, Hitachi.

Mailman not starting after restoring from snapshot

I made a snapshot of my mailman3 VM before running a script to modify a bunch of lists. I stupidly did not turn the VM off before I made the snapshot, so Im almost certain this is a corrupted DB problem from doing a snapshot restore. The issue is now that the mailman service will not start automatically. Im able to get to the web interface but I see the error "Mailman REST API not available. Please start Mailman core." I can su to the mailman user and run 'mailman start -f' which seems to get things going again and shows the lists as they were before the snapshot, which is good, but I would like to get the issue fixed so that services start normally. Any help is appreciated. Hello, mails to list owners with subjects like <Mailaddress>'s bounce score incremented on <MyListName> comes from "user(a)example.com". Where is the right place to change this? We never defined this mail address anywhere. Thank you very much!

Moderator e-mails only going out once a day

Hi, I have just got done migrating from MM2 to MM3 and the users are experiencing issues with their moderated messages. After the message is sent, the moderator does not know about the message until the next day. I checked the maillogs and all those messages are being sent at the same time around midnight. I also noticed the messages are being sent from user(a)example.com, which I switched in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg to a generic e-mail address. Is there a way to change those moderator e-mails to send right away? Does having user(a)example.com in the config affect that? Thank you in advance, Joe

Upgrade docker-mailman to v0.5.2

Hi Abhilash, I checkout the v0.5.2 for testing my upgrade from 0.4.6 and noticed, that the docker-image-version is still set to 0.4 in docker-compose.yaml. Is there any reason for it or should it be set to 0.5? I´m still using my good old mariadb. I did not find any upgrade-informations about breaking-changes. Do you have any experience with migrating from 0.4.6 to 0.5.2 on mariadb? Best regards Chrclaus

posting bounced with 501 Message has defects

Dear All, One of our users posted an email using a Bluemail Desktop client on one of the mailing lists. This email bounced with the reason "501 Message has defects". However, it gets accepted if the same user posts the same email on the same mailing list using Webmail (RoundCube) or Thunderbird. There is nothing in mailman.log and bounce.log, even in debug mode. Hello, actually I am running the latest available Mailman-2 Version on Ubuntu 20.04! Now it is really time to move on! :-) I want to set up a new server (Ubuntu-24.04) and install Mailman-3 with the Virtualenv setup method: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html As I know from my old Mailman-2.1 the archives could get quite big... ;-) So it seems very important to provide enough (expandable) disk space at the right place. (I plan to use a seperate partition with LVM for the path in question) But I could find no information about the location where hyperkitty stores the archives on an Ubuntu-/Linux-system. I assume the archives are stored underneath "/var/..." this is only a guess. But is this guess right? Another question is: How much space do I have to plan (roughly) for the "/opt"-partition for the mailman install if the archives are stored under "/var/..."? Any guidance ist very much appreciated! Hi, I installed mailman3 a few years ago on lists.sandelman.ca aka lists.tcpdump.org. My upgrade was in part a response to the HTTP based attacks that used the signup form on mailman2 to attack people via SMTP with DOS. I know the IETF mailman2 install {now gone} had some kind of delay implemented in the web form before you could submit. I didn't understand why. I installed via debian packages, and I'd really prefer to stay with that. (Not what many maintainers would say, I know. Essential that it work if mailman3 is going to take over) There were problems, probably with the hyperkitty integration with subsequent updates seemed to solve. I installed with sqlite3, since it seemed if all work was going to go through the mailman3 daemon, that it would handle all the concurrency issues. This has not been the case. I get weekly complaints about the database being locked. Sometimes this goes way on it's own, but sometimes it does not. A good way to tickle this is to go the web interface, go to a list with 200 held messages, and then having told it to show me 100+ messages per page, to then tell it to discard them all. So slow. Before I realized what was going on, I'd open multiple tabs to try to make this concurrent. So I tried to switch last week from sqlite3 to postgresql. I used pgloader with a configuration file attached below. This seemed easier than a sqlite3 dump/psql, as the SQL requires some massaging that seeemed to require more brainpower than I had at the time. I then edited /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg to suit. I had set up the postgresql database under the "list" owner, so unix-domain socket permissions, and restarted. I then saw some errors: lists not found! I visited the web interface. NO LISTS. DAMN. I put it back. I haven't figured out what went wrong yet. I will clone the VM and try again. I will report whatever I find here. === load database from '/var/lib/mailman3/mailman.db' into postgresql:///mailman3 with include drop, create tables, create indexes, reset sequences set work_mem to '16MB', maintenance_work_mem to '512 MB'; === ps: I'd pay some $$ money for email support consulting.

Over there, they found an option "Delete Account". Without any discussion, they deleted their account and all their list membership. How can we prevent this from happening? Is it possible to disable this "Delete Account" option, or can we add some admin approval? I'm impressed by Philip Bondi's use of mailman[23] for home financial automation. ("Take off Eh!") ... It seems like a ticketing system would be a better system for such a use... maybe the IETF SML WG will further help with this.. (I find most Canadian financial institutions are so far behind the curve) I think that your email is hosted by hostedemail.com? I'm guessing that "eshop" is the mailbox you use for these common notices, and maybe you retrieve that into your mailman3 with fetchmail or something? Or does your ISP turn around and SMTP to you directly? Is it your MTA, their MTA, or mailman that is doing the rejection? My problem, on lists.sandelman.ca aka lists.tcpdump.org, is messages that appear to have been processed by my MTA (according to postfix logs), but which are never delivered, nor held. Lost somewhere in mailman3 queue. Sometimes they show up after a host reboot.

Hello to all: mailman3 is phenomenal upgrade from mailman2. Very nice. Thank you to the team. In our family, we use mailman to provide redundancy on important financial emails. In this manner, emails from banks, government, ecommerce or other important providers are distributed to multiple family members. And we can ask family members if they paid the credit card bill, received their delivery, saw their tax liability or refund notification, etc. Does anyone else use mailman for such a purpose? Do you struggle with "message rejected. AUP#CDRBL" while using mailman with your ISP email relay? For example, when receiving email from a Bank or the Government of Canada on a mailman2 list, sometimes my ISP would not relay the email and I would get message rejected. AUP#CDRBL On mailman2, I mitigated by stripping headers, wrapping message and DKIM signing. makemigrations --merge error after Debian upgrade

Hi, I upgraded my debian version, and since, it seems that I have a problem. I tried `mailman-web migrate` (and `mailman-web collectstatic` etc.) and I get the error message: ``` CommandError: Conflicting migrations detected; multiple leaf nodes in the migration graph: (0010_auto_20220618_2315, 0014_schedule_cluster in django_q; 0014_auto_20220618_2315, 0018_alter_emailtemplate_language in postorius). To fix them run 'python manage.py makemigrations --merge' ``` So I tried `mailman-web makemigrations --merge` that ended with ``` PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/postorius/migrations/0019_merge_20240930_1159.py' ``` There is no such a file in the migration directory. Hello to all: I think I have resolved almost all of my issues. Thank you for your coaching. You are all super heroes. I have two domains: systemdatabase.ca, systemdatabase.homelinux.com All my lists should be on both domains. So h(a)systemdatabase.ca is the same list as h(a)systemdatabase.homelinux.com. I found this was the mailman2 behaviour on my old CentOS 7 installation and I am accustomed to it. I edited /opt/mailman/venv_mm/var/data/postfix_lmtp directly. Duplicated and edited all the lines. And compiled with postmap /opt/mailman/venv_mm/var/data/postfix_lmtp I sent a test email. This appears to work. Is this the best method to achieve this goal? What would you recommend?

CSS Hyperkitty ERROR

Hi, i installed mailman3 with virtualenv, all is working fine, the admin site works fine, the mailman(postorious) site works fine, but when im in hyperkitty the site shows without the css style.. in my web browser dev tool it shows like they loaded ok.. Here you can see what i see when loading hyperkitty https://freeimage.host/i/3n6kXKQ and mailman(postorius) https://freeimage.host/i/mailman.3n6kVix When i run my server with verbosity it shows like all is loading ok: https://freeimage.host/i/3n6SViG Any ideas? :/ My static files are loading from /static/CACHE/css/output.a0f71925131b.css and /static/hyperkitty/libs/fonts/font-awesome/css/font-awesome.min.css It seems like the real error are in the /static/CACHE files, because hyperkitty is the only one who load files from this directory.. postorius uses /static/postorius and all the css files are working fine. I checked permissions for the directory, cleared cache, etc.. i dont know what to do. Can't post to my own list from HyperKitty

Hi Everyone, I've recently installed Mailman3 and still testing it. I tried to reply to a topic on my own list while also being a superuser from HyperKitty, but I got this error message: "This list is moderated, please subscribe to it before posting." Then why I even see the archive of the private list? What might be wrong? One thing that might confuse the system is that I added a secondary e-mail to my account. I thought it would allow me to post from any of my addresses, but it seems like it's not the case, looks like I can only subscribe with one of the addresses. It also looks like HyperKitty has trouble matching up the addresses, as it lists 4 participants for the conversation, while 2 of them is my account, the other 2 is my test address. Missing styling on select pages

Hello all, I installed mailman3 on Rocky Linux 9 via the Virtualenv Installation installation guide. I configured Apache httpd to proxy gunicorn. For the most part, everything is looking good except for some select pages that do not contain the styling like all other pages. When a user sees the "Verify Your Email Address" screen, it's without any of the styling. /accounts/confirm-email/ Same for when a user tries to reset their password. The initial screen looks good (with styling), but after entering the email address and clicking "Reset My Password", the following screen is bare. /accounts/password/reset/done/ I have Mailman 3.3.10, Postorius Version 1.3.13, and HyperKitty version 1.3.12. Any suggestions?

Mailman3 OOM and high CPU usage

Hi team, Our Mailman3 server crashes with OOM and high CPU usage. As soon as we start the mailmanweb service (uwsgi process), the system crashes. It was working fine, but this issue started recently. I have a mailing list that, due to specific circumstances, has a requirement to allow messages from a user that sends messages with no subject. I've added the address to the "Accept these non-members" collection, but messages from that address still get held for moderation, due to the no-subect rule. https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rules/docs… https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rules/docs… I went through the list's interface, and I wasn't able to find a mechanism to disable the rule, aside from editing the code itself. I also added header filters to immediately accept the message, but they still get held. Specifically, the rules I defined are: Header, Pattern, Action subject, ^Subject:\s*([[{(]?no[_ ]subject[]})]?)?\s*$, Accept Immediately subject, ^Subject:, Accept Immediately subject, ^, Accept Immediately Did I configure this correctly and/or is this the right course of action? Is there a better way to bypass this rule? Thanks

Dear All, We have a Mailman3 instance with around 500 mailing lists. Most of the mailing lists have 5000 subscribers. Because of some misconfiguration in the postfix, posting for 1000 users has been bounced. Until we realized what happened, the mailman had set delivery_status to "disabled_by_bounces." for many subscribers. Now, I am unable to locate any command or an API call through which I can change the delivery_status back to enabled for 1000+ users. Can you please guide me on how I can do this programmatically using cli (I will write a bash script) or using an API call? Regards, Hitachi.

Hello to all: I require a Debian 12 VM that supports: - Subversion - Let's Encrypt and required challenges - IMAP server - mailman3 - DKIM server I'm currently running same on a CentOS 7.x VM. So that needs to be retired/migrated sooner rather than later because CentOS is out-of-support. On the Debian 12 VM other services appear to be setup and working. mailman3 is the 2nd last service that I'm standing up. In this moment, I've been able to follow https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html and https://docs.list.org/en/latest/config-web.html I have mailman3 and mailmanweb services running successfully. I have not yet been able to integrate mailmanweb into Apache (probably because of the Subversion and Let's Encrypt requirements). But I'm able to access local Postorius instance and configure a superuser and a list with web browser running locally on Debian 12 VM. My list is named ebill. An email was received for the DL, but not distributed. Can you advise how to troubleshoot from here? remove website 'example.com' via django interface or "how to rush jourself off your feet" **Disclaimer: don't try this at home** in believe to replace the display of 'example.com' in the postorius-webinterface i logged into django-interface, under 'website' (very bottom of the left menu) i added my new website and then deleted 'example.com'. Result: i can't access my webinterfaces any more, neither django nor postorius. Questions: 1. Does somebody know about the correct approach to change the displayed url in the postorius-webinterface? 2. does somebody perhaps know how to revert those removal via CLI or other ways? greetings aiz

Dear All, I recently installed Mailman3. I am new to MM3. As per my organization's policy, I need to turn off the version disclosure of Mailman Core, Postorius, and Hyperkitty. Specifically shown in the footer and in the system information page. Please let me know if there are any settings that I can set. I don't want to change any html code for the same. Please guide me in this regard.

Hello to all: Even though I have mailman3-web and mailman3-full packages installed, it feels like everything is working properly up to this point. What is supposed to be the correct outcome of https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#setting-up-a-wsgi-s… ? When I execute the command, uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini, it hangs without output. (venv) mailman@shackleton12:~$ uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini [uWSGI] getting INI configuration from /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini ^C(venv) mailman@shackleton12:~$ Hmm. I'm wondering if I should remove mailman3-web package. And start from step https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#installing-web-ui
