Problems with hyperkitty

Dear mailman support, We have an issue with hyperkitty. In the last month the space used by hyperkitty_email postgres table has increased from 54GB to 400GB and it is constantly increasing with no end. Is there any simple way of knowing what is taking so much space? Like for example display how much archiving space (or achived emails) is used by each mailing list? Looks like a mailing list has gone crazy but from the logs everything looks fine. Any help is very much appreciated. THanks a lot for your precious help!!

Hello, Our company is evaluating mailman3 as an option for company internal list serving. One of the requirements is that anyone with access to the list server be allowed to create and manage lists. Is this possible? If so, how? Is there a "create list" role that can be added for all registered users? Thanks

accept mails from several Users, not list members beside members, howto

Hi I do look out for a method to accept mails from list members and a number of 20-30 Email addresses (not list members) to a mailing list. All others should be denied to post to the list. I can add those as non-members, but AFAIK I cannot define a special rule for them in "message acceptance". Under "message acceptance" the line "non-members" is set to deny, but if I set it to "default procesessing" - will it allow ALL email addresses, or just the group of "non-member" users? Thank you. cache files?

Hi folks. I'm seeing quite a few .css files, thousands of them totaling 600+MB, building up in /var/lib/mailman3/web/static/CACHE/css. Some of them date back to when I set up the mm3 instance a few years ago. Is this expected, or am I missing a cron job or something to clean them up? Trying basic install of mailman3 in docker, but how do you set allowed hosts?

I am starting small, My goal is just to get mailman3 running in docker and test the website access via curl from the host, then I will move on from there In the docker instructions it says SERVE_FROM_DOMAIN: The domain name from which Django will be served. To be added to ALLOWED_HOSTS in django settings. Default value is not set. This also replaces Django's default example.com SITE and becomes the default SITE (with SITE_ID=1). Help! List traffic shunted to gmail/yahoo spam folders

List rename

I'm in an odd situation where I need to rename a bunch of lists. They were all created on mailman2 originally and migrated to mailman3 (very successfully, TYVM) but the names were all originally discuss-<foo>@domain and it's very confusing to be sure you're always sending to the correct <foo>. We want to completely rename the lists to <foo>-discuss@domain. These lists do not keep archives, so if I have to resort to extracting the subscriber lists and the configs and building new lists, I'm completely fine with that. Problem is, I'm really used to MM2 and config_list and could do this without thinking using those tools... that I don't have. Running MM3 3.2.2 trying to make this happen. Trying to get mailman3 stood up in Docker and having some issues following the instructions. Currently my docker-web image is not running. Today it won't start, yesterday it was exiting with 0 status immediately. Hi, Firstly, a repeat that I have a relatively broken (and soon to be fixed, I hope) installation of mailman3 based on Ubuntu 18.04 distrib packages (3.1.1-9) that stumbles along by me dealing with a bunch of things by hand that I hope'll go away once I'm up to the current version. In this set-up, I get a fair number of items shunted. Since I have this wonky version where stuff isn't always exposed in the web interface, I have to fix these things by hand. An example is that something gets shunted because of too many recipients, where I do: sudo -u list mailman withlist somemailmanlist m.max_num_recipients = 0 commit() sudo -u list mailman unshunt I've managed to find a number of these, such as m.max_message_size, m.require_explicit_destination, and m.administrivia. My questions are undoubtedly foolish, but here goes: 1. Is there any way to print the entire 'm' structure? If so, I'd perhaps be able to figure out the answers to my other questions. 2. Is there a way for me to correct the following shunt-ing issues with 'withlist'? I've been unable to figure out how... a. 'moderation_reasons': [ 'Message has no subject'] / 'rule_hits': ['no-subject'] b. Some things get caught as 'rule_hits': ['nonmember-moderation']. However, if I look in the (web-based) config, it shows that non-members should be accepted but the messages are shunted nonetheless. I don't know what to look for in 'm' or how I might clear these messages. 3. I have no idea what these are telling me to do about digest messages. Suggestions? Mailman3 service on mailman-3.3.4 is not getting started

Hi team, I am trying to install mailman 3.3.4, the currently available latest version at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html on RHEL 7.5. As part of the installation, I am not creating any user with the name *mailman* and instead going with the *root* user only. Along with that I am using the directory */var/lib/mailman* as the root directory. Also, I have rsyslog service running on my machine and using postgresql-11 as the database service. (and tried chown -R for the /opt/mailman folder already since everything there should be owned by mailman anyway)

Hello, we wanted to integrate a subscribe-form in our website after Update from Mailman2 to Mailman3. Before it was quiet easy and supposedly still is, but we can't figure out what to do with the CSRF-token-problem. Is there anywhere a documentation on this? We can't find one. If not, I would like to post more on what we tried with the html-code and what is coming up afterwards. (forbidden 403 - CSRF-verification failed. Request aborted.) Thanks in advance! Jens.

How to identify the exact reason behind the shunting of the mails ?

Hi Team, I am currently running Mailman 3 with version 3.3.1 and in-built postfix version 2.10.1-6 on RHEL 7.5 with PostgreSQL 11.7 version with default values. I am almost running 2000 lists with 128 GB RAM and 24 Cores on a single VM and on which all the mailman 3 components are running. I have been running this setup in production for the past 2 years and 6 months. From the beginning of the above setup until recent days, I observed a few mails moving to the shunt queue now and then. But from recent days it is observed that many mails are moving to the shunt queue. I browsed many websites but I could not get a proper resolution for identifying the exact reason behind the shunting of the mails. Because of which I had been asking the user to resend the mails instead of suggesting the user regarding the issue properly. I in fact used the command "mailman qfile <filename.pck>" even then I don't understand what might be wrong with the mail composition. Most of the time I see *unknown-8bit* in To or CC fields and I don't know if it is linked with the reason for shunting or not and I don't get any clue from it either. Didnt find any suitable option under "python3 manage.py" command and also didnt find any up to date post which related to mailman3 and python3. Hello All! I hope its a right place to write my concern about Mailman Hyperkitty. I have same quite odd issues lately and since I'm less experienced with Mailman, any help is welcome. So i have like hybrid version pip installation, where mailman v3 is using python3 and hyperkitty is using python2 (if im correct). I also mention, that hyperkitty is a pretty old version - 1.1.4. The main issue is that if i try to open some large-scale archived list, then i get "504 Gateway Time-out" error on webUI. Any ideas, where could i start improving the situation - should i try to upgrade some packages or do i need to give more resources to host ? #mailman irc channel moving to libera.chat

Hey Everyone, As some of you might already know that Freenode IRC server now has new owners and most of the volunteer staff have decided to move away from it to create a new IRC server libera.chat[1] due to the policies of the new owners. Along with many other open source projects, we have also decided to move away from freenode to use libera.chat instead. We have registered #mailman there and will be using that as primary IRC channel for Mailman things. Freenode has also decided to drop all registrations, so, #mailman channel there is no longer registered to any member of Mailman Core team as of some time earlier today (Tue June 15th). OS update 18.04 -> 20.04 with Python 3.6 -> 3.8

Hi, just want to report that updating my server's OS from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 including an upgrade from Python 3.6 to 3.8 worked 75% on the mailman3 installation. Stopping and disabling the service before prevented most of the problems, but I forget to disable the cron jobs. **sigh** So whenever you have to upgrade your OS including python, don't forget the cron jobs. After OS upgrade I renamed both "venv" directories and rebuild them from my notes. Worked. Starting up mailman-core was easy. Getting mailman-web back to work was a little tricky: 1. After rebuild I forgot to run the post-update script, overseen that in my notes. **sigh #2** 2. My uwsgi-emperor was totally confused and needed some guidance and manual remove of .sock file 3. Finally I got this in the logs: /opt/mailman/web/venv/lib/python3.8/site-packages/django_q/conf.py:139: UserWarning: Retry and timeout are misconfigured. Set retry larger than timeout, failure to do so will cause the tasks to be retriggered before completion. Seehttps://django-q.readthedocs.io/en/latest/configure.html#retry for details. warn( I checked the reference file from here: |https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman-suite/raw/master/mailman-suite_project/settings.py?inline=false| and it misses the "retry" value. Long-shot cry for help

Hi, I'm having severe operational issues with my mailman3 site. My site is built on standard Ubuntu packages (18.04), and they're ancient. I'm having two big issues... 1. I have the old smiley problem that I've had from the very beginning and never solved. I have added 'charset': 'utf8mb4' to the relevant config file (/etc/mailman3/mailman-web.py), but that hasn't "taken", in the sense that the calls to mysql do not include the charset stuff. /usr/share/mailman3-web/settings_local.py links to /etc/mailman3/mailman-web.py and there is no file /usr/share/mailman3-web/settings_local.pyc. I moved it out of the way hoping it'd get re-built, but it has not been in the months since. The result of this that I get hundreds of mail messages to root (thousands, really), rapidly filling / with mail in /var/mail/root and logging in /var/log/mail.log. The mail has something like "Subject: [Django] ERROR (EXTERNAL IP): Internal Server Error: /mailman3/hyperkitty/api/mailman/archive" and "DataError at /hyperkitty/api/mailman/archive (1366, u"Incorrect string value: '\\xF0\\x9F\\x98\\x8A\\x0D\\x0A...' for column 'content' at row 1")" I have tried to trace to figure out what file is _actually_ controlling the calls to mysql. There's a file called /var/lib/ucf/cache/:etc:mailman3:mailman-web.py as well, but I have no idea what that is or if it might be used. Is there something like 'mailman info' for mailman-web so I can see what files are being used? I'd love to fix this... 2. There's this one curious cron job... * * * * * www-data [ -f /usr/bin/django-admin ] && python2.7 /usr/bin/django-admin runjobs minutely --pythonpath /usr/share/mailman3-web --settings settings (yes, I know python2.7 is a problem... see the last paragraph below). These jobs start piling up. They run & run & run, and eventually the machine screeches to halt when it runs out of memory and goes belly up. This is a relatively recent development. After a while, I'll have 5 or 6 or more of these all running, looking something like this: www-data 6366 6364 99 15:00 ? 00:12:27 python2.7 /usr/bin/django-admin runjobs minutely --pythonpath /usr/share/mailman3-web --settings settings What this means in practice right now is that I'm forced to go in and kill these on a regular basis or the machine _will_ die and people _will_ shout at me. Does anyone have any idea why these might not be finishing? Can I comment this out completely & live happier? Any help whatsoever? ----------------------------------- Finally, I should add that I know my current installation is fundamentally flawed because I chose to go with distro packages. I simply cannot fix it. My strong recommendation to others who follow me is that they do NOT do this. Bite the bullet and install via pip... Send MySQL data to mailman list for distribution

I'm trying to connect existing MySQL data to the Mailman distribution list. Actually, a message is sent from the web page. It remains on this page and is also stored in the MySQL table on the provider server. This is working fine. I have also existing Mailman distribution list generated from the cPanel on the provider server as well. This list is working fine when used for a direct mailing. I need to link the MySQL table to the Mailman distribution list. When the message is posted on the web page and stored in the MySQL table, it is also to be sent to members as per the Mailman distribution list. I don't know where to configure it. In the phpMyAdmn page of the MySQL or in the Malman menu ? Thank you for your help

Hi together, I need to add custom attributes to the mailing lists: "responsible department": Free text field who is responsible from an organisational pov (not a person but an entity) Enhance the boolean public to a tri-state: public, restricted audience and private (restricted audience means: some people could subscribe themself - how that works is a different topic but w/o the information this can't be achived) - of course this could also be implemented as a second boolean that e.g. splits "not public" into "restricted audience" and "private" (means: nothing goes wrong for code that doesn't know this difference). Any hints how to do that best? Is it possible to store custom attributes, or should that be stored elsewhere? Andi

When send command to ml-request@ join address=some.email(a)domain.com Response is: Confirmation email sent to 3dsome.email(a)domain.com It add characters 3d to email and realy sent confirmation to it. Also help command for join return me join [digest=<no|mime|plain>] [address=user(a)example.com] But digest doesnt work as after command join digest=no address=some.email(a)domain.com i get join bad argument: digest=no I will be thankfull for any help/advice. trying to clean up the "held messages" mess

Hi, I migrated a Mailman3 installation on Debian10 yesterday evening from Debian packages to PIP (thanks to [1]). I think some bugs which existed before are now cleaned out, but mailman still threw exceptions when trying to get the "held messages". I went through the pendedkeyvalue table of the MySQL DB to get all request ids of the held messages and their lists and discarded the messages via curl and the REST API. Mailman also logged the discarding was successful. The amount of held messages is now reduced, but e.g. a list with 120 held messages before has till 59 held messages. non-member moderation: list default vs default processing

I've started testing and importing lists from Mailman2 to Mailman3. I've found that there's an inconsistency with the non-members moderation setting. As a result we have non-members unable to email a list via Mailman3 that had no problem on Mailman2. Each time this problem has come up I've had to change the moderation setting from "List Default" to "Default Processing". But I've also noticed that some non-members were imported and already have "Default Processing" configured. Can you help me understand what determines this setting in Mailman3? It seems this would be something addressed via the mailman import21 option I've been using to import the lists. I check the provided link in the log (|||http://sqlalche.me/e/2j85|) and also searched for it on the internet and found the following possible reasons: 1. DB user does not have permissions at all -> I doubt that, because in general mailman is working ok 2. DB user is not allowed to connect from remote -> I doubt that too, because everything is on one host and DB user is allowed to connect from localhost 3. Multi-Threading -> pymysql is mentioned to be not thread-safe and each thread needs its own connection May this be caused by multi-threading? Hello, I've upgraded my Mailman installation from those versions: mailman==3.2.2 postorius==1.2.4 mailmanclient==3.2.2 To those ones: mailman==3.3.0 postorius==1.3.3 mailmanclient==3.3.2 I'm having issues in Postorius in the settings section: Unknown attribute: process_bounces. When i'm printing the settings list for the concerned list retrieved by the REST API, i'am missing all the parameters related to the management of bounces. In the "mailinglist" table of the Mailman database, i have the columns managing these parameters. Anyone have any ideas? Regards,

New Mailman 3 installation issues

I have been trying to get a mailman 3 installation working for longer than I'd like to admit. Core appears to be installed and working as desired but Postorius (and hyperkitty, but I haven't even started troubleshooting it while trying to get the web interface working) is only loading the main page with no lists shown and all remaining links return a server error (specific text is: "Server error An error occurred while processing your request." with the error text highlighted). I think I followed all of the installation instructions, including the updated pythonpath line in the systemd module, but it's entirely possible that there is an error somewhere along the way. I have had to make two minor tweaks, the /static/ location was moved from /opt/mailman/web/static to /var/www/mailman/ (owner mailman:nginx) as nginx was giving permissions errors (even if it owned the files or with the mod set to 777) with the default location and wouldn't load the css, and installed postgres directly from their repo as the method in the guide doesn't create the user. Aside from that everything should be exactly as laid out in the installation guide. The logs are showing everything running and the DB logs show all the queries going through successfully, there are no errors in the web logs corresponding with the errors being served on the site aside an entry for a 500 in the access logs [18/May/2021:12:13:01] "GET /archives/ HTTP/1.1" 500 1102 "http://mailman3/mailman3/lists/" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/89.0.4389.91 Safari/537.36" "-" when I took a look in the DB tables many of them appear to be empty, I have a few lists in core that were imported from 2.1 but no new lists created. Can't deliver mails in queue

Hello, I have stumbled upon some weird issues with my migration to mailman3.. I've followed the step by step instructions for installing mm3 manually in a venv with postfix and virtual aliases (if that is of any significance). Now the Problem is, that some lists don't deliver EMails at all. The list was one which I migrated with the mailman21 command. But the Mail I sent did not get through to no one and the mailman logs did not show anything. I then created a completely new List which did not exists in mm2.1, subscribed two addresses and sent myself an EMail. That one worked as intended. I then deleted the whole broken list and created it cleanly, added the same two people, sent an email and nothing. Did not show up in the Moderation Queue or anywhere. it also doesn't get shunted. It just never arrives. I then turned the log level to debug on the smtp module. I have no clue what's going wrong. (I've turned on debugging both on the original member list and the reduced member list. Both hang on the first delivery they do). If I restart mailman, the message gets correctly shunted as it is interrupted mid-delivery. My maillogs don't register any activity beside the listpost. Bounce counter visibility for List Admins

As you may know, we use MM3 but the Affinity/Empathy flavor and we only have List Administrator using the Postorious/Affinity. Unlike many here, we have no access to any server-based files. Can someone tell me if Postorious gives list administrators visibility into the bounce counters? While List Admins get to set various bounce counters we have no visibility of those counters until, all of a sudden, an entire source of subscribers hits the bounce threshold and gets bounced off the list. It would be really nice to be able to see the bounce counters and possibly head off trouble before users/subscriber mail hosts. It can serve as an effective early warning system that something is wrong. Assuming Postorious cannot, is there another way List Admins can inspect bounce counters? Email command? Thanks - Steve

I have a user attempting to access the list archives and he’s generating this login error. I have verified that he does have a django account. I’ve never seen this one before and I didn’t find anything relevant in the lit archives. OS upgrade - anything to take care of?

Dear MM3 users, today I upgraded one of two servers from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 and - besides some minor config updates - postfix & dovecot worked well afterwards. So I am very optimistic that the upgrade of the second server from 18.04 to 20.04 will also work fine. But the second server is running MM3 (installed in venv) and I saw that on upgrade Python 3.8 is installed. Is there anything I have to take care of? Anything to do / change in venv? I have tried a couple of tools (Gunzip and Winrar) and both are giving me an unexpected end of file when trying to decompress the gz file. Problems with New MM3 Installation

After using Mailman 2 (and possibly 1 though I don’t remember) for almost 20 years, I have just upgraded to Mailman 3. I followed the instructions here: https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#virtualenv-inst… Things generally work, but I have run into a couple of small problems: 1) The uwsgi-error.log is filling with errors that seem to culminate in "ModuleNotFoundError: No module named ‘settings’”. My settings.py is located in “/etc/mailman3” and seems to be found by other components of MM3. This error must be coming from the cron jobs. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? 2) While old messages were imported without issue, new emails are not being archives. I see them in: mailman3/mm/var/archives/prototype/[listname]@[domain]/new But they are not being delivered. I have added this to my mailman.cfg: [archiver.hyperkitty] class: mailman_hyperkitty.Archiver enable: yes configuration: /usr/local/mailman3/mailman-hyperkitty.cfg And created the "/usr/local/mailman3/mailman-hyperkitty.cfg” as such: base_url: http://localhost/archives/ api_key: [key that matches “MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY” in my settings.py] Some documentation says that the url should be "http://localhost/hyperkitty/“, but url generates a page not found error on my setup while the archives are available at the “archives” url. List Digest - Subject line

Is there a way to optionally cause the Subject line to display with the text body and as a summary at the top of the digest? I ask because on our mailing list (and probably many others too) subscribers include important content in the subject line and do NOT repeat it in the body of the text. So when the digest formatting places the Subject lines at the top to create "Today's Topics" as it does for all digest subscribers, the subject line and text body are widely separated making comprehension of the message much more difficult and separating important content unless it's repeated. This also happens on our list which uses Affinity/Empathy rather than Hyperkitty. In general, while a Today's Topics summary is useful, I think it would be preferable to always include the subject line with the body (one add'l line per digest message). Again I'm wondering if this is a web front-end function, a MM3 core function, or perhaps both? I ask because if it's not a MM3 core function I'll need to ask our developer for an Empathy modification. Below is an example from an Empathy-base list that shows how difficult it is to fully comprehend messages when the subject line is separated from the text body. The same issue would seem to be present in a Hyperkitty based list: Today's Topics: 1. Wilson’s Warbler (Albert Laguna) 2. RB Nuthatch, Kent (John Johnson) 3. 400 Bad Request when administrator tries to selectively override member options

This is probably Design Intent, but I'd just like to confirm. When an administrator submits partial 'member options', it comes back with the details of a 400 - Bad Request, indicating essentially that all of the member options must be set. Screenshot: https://ibb.co/pzM5Z4m It would be a bit smoother to check that all values are selected before sending the request, and inform the administrator that they cannot selectively override member settings for their list. But most importantly, I would like to confirm that nothing is corrupt/broken in our implementation. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Correct way to filter auto-replies to list?

I have seen a few messages on this list regarding handling 'out of office' auto-replies. However I do not see a final resolution. What is the best practice to filter auto-replies to list: header filter or postfix milter-reject or something else? We are running dockerized Mailman 3 version 1.3.4. A list user auto-replied their vacation message to list and then the listserv created a chain-reaction of continuously replying to auto-replies by that user. There isn't really a good header option to filter from, as the subject seems to be randomized. Mailman 3 Web Application Startup Time or Availability - 502 Bad Gateway and Postorius

Hello, I've been setting up a new Mailman 3 installation earlier this year, and I think things have been going okay so far. I've noticed, however, that after a long amount of time passes (for example, a weekend), when I try to visit the local Mailman 3 web application (e.g., example.mailman.site/mailman3/lists/, where it says "Postorius" at the top left corner of the page and shows a list of mailing lists in the body of the page), I sometimes get a 502 Bad Gateway type of error (referenced from my notes). As far as I can tell, this looks like a normal web server (nginx?) error. If I try visiting the Mailman 3 server location again in a web browser shortly thereafter, I still might get a 502 Bad Gateway error. If I wait a while longer (maybe a minute or more?), the Mailman 3 web application appears to load as expected. I've tried looking at the gunicorn documentation (https://docs.gunicorn.org/en/stable/index.html) and searching online (including in this Mailman3 mailing list) to see if there's something that can be done to fix this issue. The closest thing I can find for now is advice for something that, while possibly being technologically unrelated, includes the idea of "warmup requests", which makes me think of simply setting up some sort of script to periodically load a page on the Mailman 3 web application in order to keep it more available for visitors (https://stackoverflow.com/a/57056170) Is there a setting or something in any of the Mailman 3 related programs that could help with keeping the Mailman 3 web application up and running more often without having to resort to making an ongoing, automated request to the Mailman 3 web application? Exception with processing subscription confirmation email

Hi, A new user tried to subscribe to a mailinglist, received the confirmation mail, and replied to it. The subscriber is however not subscribed and remains listed in the "pending confirmation" list. I have a user whose moderation rule is 'Accept immediately' yet when they send a message for distribution to the list, they only receive it and it is not distributed via the list. Non-ascii characters missing from Pipermail archive txt and gz downloads

Mailman 2.1.34 Debian 10 Postfix Hi I'm hoping someone can shine a light on character encoding issue I've encountered. A plain-text email with non-ascii characters in the body gets posted to the list. As per Mark Sapiro's guide I've captured the incoming message to file. - https://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users@python.org/msg73469.html The message is received by Mailman with the non-ascii characters displaying correctly. The header of that message has: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/78.9.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Language: en-AU Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit In the list's mbox file and archive webpage, the message displays the non-ascii characters correctly. In the archive's downloaded .txt (and also .gz) file, the non-ascii characters are missing and displayed as "?". I've copied the message text in below, from both the correct one from the email and the erroneous .txt file. Hopefully they won't get scrambled up when I send this. Any advice on getting the non-ascii characters written into the archive .txt file would be gratefully received. Just don't followup to both.] I just noticed that among the agents that send non-conformant long lines[1] is HyperKitty. Nowadays violating the 80 octet limit is common and MUAs mostly handle it, but the 1000 octet limit is enforced by many MTAs[2] I think that HyperKitty should format mail per RFC 3676 format=flowed https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3676#section-4. However, I don't use "modern" (aka crappy HTML-oriented) clients, so I don't know whether they handle format=flowed properly. Discussion greatly desired. Steve Footnotes: [1] RFC 5321: MTAs MAY impose a limit >= 1000 octets including CRLF. RFC 5322: MUST be <= 1000 octets including CRLF, SHOULD be <= 80 octets including CRLF. [2] In practice, most (?) MTAs just break the line at 998 octets and insert CRLF rather than reject the message. I assume they would break happily in the middle of a multi-byte character, i.e., any non-ASCII in a UTF-8 text.

GNU Mailman condemns reinstatement of RMS

To the Mailman community, The GNU Mailman Steering Committee condemns the reinstatement of Richard M. Stallman (RMS) to the Board of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), and has taken the following actions: 1. On behalf of the GNU Mailman project, signed the letter on GitHub[1] calling for the removal of the entire FSF Board, as well as RMS himself. 2. Started exploring ways to move our financial assets, for decades managed by the FSF, to new management. The management fees are small, but this is an important symbolic protest. 3. Started exploring how to leave the GNU Project. On the one hand, if we leave but GNU wants to maintain a "GNU Mailman" project, we cannot stop them, confusing users. On the other hand, RMS is leader of the GNU Project, and has intervened in Mailman affairs on many occasions. We should forestall this in the future. We wish to explain our actions to the community. Although free exchange of software among users is a practice that goes back to days of the earliest general purpose computers, RMS was the first to propose a complete free software distribution, and is the acknowledged founder of the Free Software movement. Even leaders of the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) acknowledge this. We all owe him a debt for this. Nevertheless, the movement has matured and thrived, spawning the competitive open source movement, with whose philosophy Mailman is more closely aligned. While we acknowledge our debt to RMS, we don't need him any longer. And unfortunately, he has become both a symbol and a source of the toxicity in tech communities. The FSF Board did the right thing by accepting RMS's resignation. They did the wrong thing by reinstating him. RMS has a long history of abusive behavior and toxic political positions. A small part of it is described in the open letter on GitHub[1] and its references[2], and several members of the Steering Committee have observed it directly. All of us have heard stories directly from those who were abused or observed it directly. His political positions are public, for example his support of pedophiles. He claims that he in no way supports abusive relationships with children, yet refuses to acknowledge that children are generally in no position to provide consent, an evasive and highly toxic position. There is no question: RMS is toxic. We came for mailing list management, but we stayed for the community. We have a right to protect our community by dissociating it from toxic influences. We do not want our project associated with such a person, nor to provide economic resources to organizations that promote him to leadership positions. We are taking these actions to protect our community, both the narrow community of Mailman developers and users, and the broader open source community, from his toxic behavior and from the reputational damage that will come from helping to enable him. While we have no information suggesting that other members of the FSF Board are similarly toxic as individuals, as a group they enabled RMS for decades, and now have taken an explicit step in enabling him again. If they want to regain their position of respect and acceptance in our community, they must acknowledge their error, and we don't see -- given their reinstatement of RMS himself -- how they can do so convincingly while maintaining their positions on the Board. They must resign, and a new Board composed, to demonstrate their sincerity. What they do is up to them, of course, but if they do not take radical steps, we will continue to consider association with the FSF a threat to our community. Resetting users' password for them?

Hi. I have quite a few users who when they reset their password, don't receive their password reset email. It works fine for many, so they are going out. But for those who they don't go out for, I was hoping to get their password reset key/token from the database tables and send it to them...only thing is I can't find it in there! )it may not be there). So what would you suggest for enabling people to reset their password when the system email isn't received: - Is there a way to get the reset token so I can send it manually - if so, where/how do I find it? - Would enabling social login be a work around for this problem? - Anything else you can suggest? SpamAssassin header confusion

I'm struggling to understand an aspect of SpamAssassin headers, and would greatly appreciate any help. Here is my scenario: One of my mailbox addresses - say addr1(a)somewhere.com - is a member of a Mailman 3 mailing list. I send a spam email (e.g. one with the GTUBE string) to the list from a different address. My mail server (Postfix/Amavis/Spamassassin) correctly identifies the mail as spam, and, appropriately, adds several spam-related headers - X-Spam-Flag, X-Spam-Score etc. I can see, from the copy of the email that lands in /var/lib/amavis/virusmails on the mail server, that those headers are indeed present. The mail message is handed off to Mailman for processing. The list in question has nonmember_default_action set to "defer", so Mailman sends the message on to each member address. However, the message, as it appears in the inbox of addr1(a)somewhere.com, contains no X-Spam- headers. The only indication of the message's spammish nature is in the Subject line, which has been prepended with the familiar string "***SPAM*****". On the face of it, it looks like Mailman has removed the X-Spam-* headers. If that's so, I don't understand why. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me figure out what is going on here. Database deadlock when trying to delete a member.

Hi, I’ve got a strange error. I migrated from mailman 2.1 to 3 using the migration guide on the website and things have been working fine. But I’m in the process of testing the new syncmembers command to replace some inhouse mailman API code we wrote. I’ve tracked my problem down to what appears to be a deadlock in the postgresql database. When trying to delete certain users the SQL query hangs and never returns. After doing some tracing and tracking it down to the database, I enabled DB logging of all queries and saw that the following query was never returning: DELETE FROM member WHERE member.id = 166814 If I try to run it manually I get the same issue, in psql it never returns. mailman=# explain analyze DELETE FROM member WHERE member.id = 166814; [… 60 seconds passes…] ^CCancel request sent ERROR: canceling statement due to user request CONTEXT: while deleting tuple (2998,72) in relation "member" I’m just wondering if there are any commands or scripts I can run to verify the database and it’s constraints to see if there is some error in the database data? Or where you’d recommend I go from here? It only impacts the user on this specific list. If I add this user to another list and remove them, everything works fine. This is on a test system so I can do various testing. I’m trying to find the root cause so that I can verify my production system isn’t impacted by the same thing. Setup Details: OS: Oracle Linux 7 (Redhat) Installed using pip via virtualenv talking to a local pgsql database on the same box. Data was migrated from a mailman 2.1 install into mailman3 using migration instructions on the website. Filter who can send on mailman3 list?

Hi! I have a mailman3 mailing list which I admin, and I would like setup the following rule. Me and 3 of my team mates (who are part of the mailman3 list) should be able to send on the list as well as an "no-reply" user, others on the mailman3 list should only be able to receive the e-mails (and of course be able to unsubscribe themself). Both the: "Default action to take when a non-member posts to thelist" and the "Default action to take when a member posts to the list" is set to "Default processing", and I tried to setup actions in the "Header Filters" - but no really success.. :-( So what I basically try do achieve is to have only the following addresses to be allowed to send announcements (e-mails) on the mailman3 list, and all others that are member of the mailman3 list will just receive the e-mails. The usual "announcements" are sent out as the "no-reply" address (that actually are not really part of the mailman3 list) ;-) no-reply(a)abc.com ("fake address" that actually are not really part of the mailing-list) peter(a)abc.com david(a)abc.com marcus(a)abc.com How to achieve this kind of filter with mailman3?

Configuration variables in Docker

Hey there, we installed the latest Docker version of Mailman3 and it seems to work for now. But I have 2 problems with configuration: ## DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS Here it says, that allowed hosts can be added: https://asynchronous.in/docker-mailman/web/ How de we add multiple hosts? Did I miss something? When we set 1 URL, everything works (with 2(!) Domains, since SERVE_FROM_DOMAIN is the first one). Is there a way I miss to input multiple hosts, that the variable is an array? We tried: - DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS=example1.com,example2.com - DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS='example1.com, example2.com' - DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS=example1.com example2.com - DJANGO_ALLOWED_HOSTS=example1.com,\nexample2.com And I think some more, but never works. Seeting "Maximum number of recipients"

Hi, I have an (admittedly old) version of Postorius in my install[1] on an Ubuntu 18.04 machine. Most things work fine. However, my version doesn't seem to have a way to set the maximum number of recipients under Message Acceptance, and mail is getting shunted because there was a setting for lists on the old mailman2 lists that I migrated over. If I'm going to avoid shunting, I have to change the value :) Since it isn't in Postorius, how should I change it? Maximum number of recipients Setting

I have run several tests. It looks like on the 'Maximum number of recipients' setting, a 2 means 1. If I set it to 2, I can have the listname(a)listdomain.com only. If I have a CC, it comes to me for moderation. If I set it to a 3, I can send out to listname(a)listdomain.com plus a CC. I have mailman3 running now, more or less. Mailman did not send messages to my list, giving a permiission error on the digest.mmdf file, which was not there. I created the file and made list.list the owner, now it sends messages. Rejection Reason for refusing a subscription request

I was testing out the process of rejecting an incoming subscription request. Choosing the reject option for a moderated subscription request does send out a rejection notice but it gives no reason for the rejection. rest api runner not running

Hi, I have been using mailman for about ten years, now I want to move the lists to another server, I have installed mailman3 there, most of it seems to be running, but the "rest api runner" is not. Nothing is listening on port 8001. What have I missed? What do I do to start the restapi runner? Mixing Mailman 3 with AWS SES

I am moving the website www.t10.org from a private/corporate VM to AWS EC2s. For many years, t10.org has had very happy results with using Mailman 2 for its email reflector, and I have no real concerns about moving to Mailman 3. My bugbear is the fact that I need the following mixed bag of incoming email addresses to work in concert with each other to receive and handle emails. > t10(a)t10.org (Primary Mailman Reflector) > chair(a)t10.org (Mailman Reflector to direct messages to the T10 chair and his designates) * docs(a)t10.org (document posting mechanics - serviced by a small mountain of home-grown code code) * bbs(a)t10.org (other publicly accessible services - serviced by code that recalls the days when everything as done on a Bulletin Board System, BBS) My best guess is that the AWS Simple Email Service (SES) needs to sit in front of both Mailman and the home-grown code, to properly direct the incoming emails to the right places. The big worry is as follows... All available evidence read to date suggests that the default AWS installation of Mailman 3 assumes that Mailman 3 is the *only* receiver of emails in the configuration. If true, then putting SES in front of Mailman could be a Herculean challenge. Or... Hercules may have already cleaned the Augean Stables, and left behind a AWS Lambda function that can serve as a keystone puzzle piece for solving my dilemma. Mysterious Bounces Being Logged

I keep seeing bounces being recorded in logs/bounce.log that have no corresponding entry in Postfix's mail.log. For instance one address had registered about 2 dozen bounces in the past week in bounce.log and yet every single entry for this address in mail.log has a status=sent. Changing subscription address

All, I need help with this. A subscriber is a member of 14 of the lists on my system (others have more subscriptions). This member needs to change the address and is dyslexic, so I’ve been asked to help. I added the new address to her account in Django and set it as the preferred address. However, when she was subscribed, the system set her old address as the list subscription address, instead of her ‘preferred’ address. Well, I’m not sure of this as I cannot access her Settings, but that’s how it worked with one of my own addresses. Will I now have to tell her to do this for each list she is subscribed to: Select ‘Mailman Settings’ in dialog pulldown. Select one of the lists listed. Click on ‘Manage Subscription.’ In ‘Select Emai’, select the ‘Primary Address’ pulldown option Click on ‘Change email used for subscription.’ Please note that the “Global Mailman preferences’ nor the ‘Address-based preferences’ have the option to select the preferred address. I realize that once a member has an account in Django AND has preferred address set AND has selected the ‘Primary Address’ for each list, then this will be easier. However, I have 10000+ subscriptions by some 1500 members, most of whom were moved over from MM2 and have no Django accounts. Someone on list some time ago advised me that it was possible to do this easily globally. I have spent a couple of hours on the system trying to find that way but the above per-list procedure is all I found. FILTER_VHOST not working

In /etc/mailman3/mailman-web.py I have added FILTER_VHOST = True so that only the list for the current domain are shown. But this has no effect. What's more, in hyperkitty I see at the top left the lable for the default domain, even though I am visiting from another domain. The web domains are exactly the same as the mail domans (lists.[domain].[tld]) In the Nginx config I have added location / { proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $host; proxy_pass http://localhost:8000/; [....] } to make sure that mailman3 knows from which URL it is visited. Am I overlooking something? I am using the distribution packages on Ubuntu 20.04: mailman3 3.2.2-1 mailman3-web 0+20180916-10 I see, the mailman3-web package is quite dated. Mailman Core 3.3.4 is now out

Because of incompatibility with the new version of a downstream library (SQLAlchemy), this release add is setting 1.3.x as the max supported version of SQLAlchemy. Even though it comes soon after 3.3.3, it has a lot of bug fixes and new features. Some notable ones are: * Email -join command now supports subscribing as digests with digest=<no|mime|plain> options being honored. * For anonymous lists, Mailman will filter all the headers except a few that can be configured using a new config option. * Mailman can do max_size checks on filtered message rather than original message (which might be larger before being filtered) * Previously deprecated --add, --del and --sync options from `mailman members` command are now removed. Their alternatives are `addmembers`, `delmembers` and `syncmembers` subcommands. * If configured, Mailman will add a report about content filtering. Problem with languages

Hey, I set up Mailman3 from the Debian-packages and got it working. But for some reason I do have a mixed setup in languages now. Some strings are in English, some are in German. The settings I changed are: in mailman.cfg [mailman] default_language: de in mailman-web.py LANGUAGE_CODE = 'de-DE' TIME_ZONE = 'Europe/Berlin' Nothing changed after restarting services. I then came across this post: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… -> but actually I do not find any of the files, ... - no mailman.po / .mo - no generate_mo.sh - no languages folders in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/mailman/messages - when searching with locate (after updatedb) no LC_MESSAGES/mailman or anything stated in the post Actually it would be fantastic to be able to choose language for the web interface / lists like on this here, but this is additional :-) just to have it in one language, this time German would be cool. Is it possible, to only show publicly (if advertised) these lists on a certain url, that are corresponding to the web host the url I accessed mailman through? I tried to configure different Web hosts with different Mail domains ... but through all the domains all mailing lists are advertised and I don't get why I then should configure different web hosts :-) Another solution for me would be, that I have only 1 Web host, don't advertise any Mailing-lists (or only certain ones) and configure different administrators for certain mail domains. But also that I don't see how it should be done :-( Sorry for the maybe nooby/newby question, but I just started trying Mailman3 and hoped for a better support for multidomain (which I till right now like in contrast to mailman2, whih has been a hazzle to register new Domains on the same server, but worked :-)). Good MM hosts for customized code?

E-Democracy.org is plotting a test move from GroupServer.org (end of life coming) to MM3. We have certain technologies we've embedded into GroupServer, like volume based posting limits on our political forums (no more than X posts in y hours per member ... typically 2 or 3 posts in 24 hours), inserting standard "who made this post" in the email footer with links to the user profile for context assuming email is forwarded as well as the web archive url to that post. We know that we do not want to be in charge of email deliverability and we don't yet have an Mailman aficionado in our volunteer team. So ideally, we'd find the right Mailman host where we can use our own selected domain (@opengroups.org perhaps) and whether we hire coders to help out with custom tech OR have volunteer coders (interested in local online communities? AKA hate that Facebook and NextDoor host most of these, let me know :-) ), we'd like to have the right set up to allow us to experiment. Advice? Thoughts? Delayed password requests & migrating users from mm2

Hi again, With my new mm3 instance, password reset email to members are being received many hours late or not at all. They seem to be sent fine and when I trigger one to one of my addresses, it works instantly. But many users report getting it many hours later or not at all (despite looking in spam and bulk folders). Anyone else experience this password reset mail delay/vanishing and/or have any suggestions for diagnosing it and resolving it? The main reason this is problematic is that in migrating lists from mm2, I've set a 'fake' password for them in the mm3 db and instructed members to reset their password to set a new one so they can access the list and update their subscription and/or subscribe to other lists (which they can also do without an account of course - but then lose the ability to use the web interface and access archives). So if, as an alternative, there is another way to get list members to access their account then I'm open to it. Cheers, Duane

Specifying hold reason: non-member, header filter number/regex

Hi, Unlike in mm2, I'm finding in mm3 that is not obvious when non-member is trying to post to the list when their subject line also has a header-filter match. All it lists is that the posting has matched a header rule (which isn't quite accurate as it is a non-member) and even when it matches a header rule it doesn't say which one (which is a noted issues in the file mailman/chains/headers.py). Anyone else noticed the same and have a solution? The relevant list setting is:: Message Acceptance > Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list: Hold for moderation Should I be editing mailman/chains/headers.py or perhaps another python file in that firstory to make the hold reason more explicit? It is actually two problems I wish to solve: 1. Show when the message is held because it is a posting by a non-member (or a moderated member, etc) 2. Show what specific header filter has caused the message to be held so I know why and/or can debug the regex to be more/less specific. Cheers, Duane

problem with postorius initial setup

problems installing mailman3 under gentoo and upgrading mailman2 to mailman3

Hi. I am having a great deal of difficulty installing mailman3 using gentoo and sendmail. Also, I want to upgrade my old mailman2 data to mailman3. What I have done so far is to install the mailman3 packages from my repository and got this: django-mailman3 version 1.3.4, mailmanclient version 3.3.1, mailman version 3.3.2 (apparently the core), postorius version 1.3.3 and hyperkitty version 1.3.3. I also have mariadb and postgresql already installed. Now trying to read your documentation, it seems it wants me to reinstall some packages using pip in the home directory of the mailman user in a python virtual environment, that was the first thing. But I would like to avoid multiple package managers wherever possible -- gentoo is already a lot of maintainance without dealing with pip's maintainance. The binaries also seem to be different from my gentoo packages. So, how do I proceed with getting mailman3 up and working, configuring the database, configs, etc and I guess after doing that upgrading mailman2 and getting sendmail to interface properly with mailman3? Attachments in digests mails

Hi, subscribers that prefer to receive digests, are receiving attachments as encoded characters in the message body. This makes digests almost unreadable, see an extract of an example below. Posterious membership listing for non-owner/moderators?

Hi, I'm configuring my new mailman3 lists and one option I wish to use is a membership listing (which list members can opt-in/out of via their preferences). The only problem is, via the web interface (Posterious / Hyperkitty) I can't find that listing when logged in as an ordinary member. Am I missing something or is this not built in yet? I have my test list setting under List Identity -> Members List Visibility set to "Only mailinglist members", but all I can find in terms of members is the side-listing of posters to the list/thread. (as usual before asking the question I explored a lot and searched the archives/documentation). Cheers, Duane

Setting for archiving multi email domains?

Hi again, I have a Debian-postfix-postgres-nginx-Hyperkitty-Postorius setup with a primary domain (e.g. primarydomain.com) and several 'secondary' domains used for email lists (e.g. emaillistA.com and emaillistB.com) When sending emails to a list using the primarydomain.com address, the email is received, sent to subscribers and archived properly. But when it is sent to one of the secondary domains like tes(a)emaillistA.com - the email doesn't seem to be sent and isn't archived - despite it being set to be. What I've tried so far (after searching these archives and looking at the documentation) is to: 1) Adding emaillistA.com and emaillistB.com to the MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_FROM setting in the settings_local.py file (and then restart mailman) 2) Adding emaillistA.com and emaillistB.com to the mydestination setting in the postfix main.cf file (and the restarting postfix). ...I even tried adding to /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 emaillistA.com and 127.0.0.1 emaillistB.com but removed it as it didn't seem appropriate there. Does anyone have any hits of what else I need to configure to get it working for these 'secondary' email domains? Cheers, Duane

Backups & disaster recovery of mailman3

Hi, So now I have a running mailman3 installation. Whew... Is there documentation of things like thorough backups and disaster recovery? I haven't yet found it. Backups: Obviously, I understand that I need to have datbase (mysql, in my case) dumps, and I'll have file system backups onto something that our IT folks will backup. Is there more I should think of? Disaster recovery: So, let's say my server (which is cloud-y) gets trashed and I need to get mailman back on a new server. Is this process described somewhere? Importing issue from mailman2 to mailman3

Hi, I'm in the process of moving 1400-ish lists from a very old mailman2 installation to an installation on Ubuntu 18.04 with the version of mailman3 packaged for that distro. (Yes, that was a mistake, but I'm committed at this point.) I'm doing this import as per: sudo -u list mailman import21 somelist@one-of-the-domains<mailto:somelist@one-of-the-domains> /tmp/lists/somelist/config.pck where /tmp/lists includes all of the list configs from the old installation. Most of it's going fine, as best I can see.
