Importing list archives

So I got a shiny new instance of Mailman3 installed (thanks Brian!). I recreated my lists and I am now importing large historical list archives from an mbox file (24GB). It takes a couple of hours to run this import, so I killed the import task after about 20 minutes so I could restart it in a screen session. Error after HyperKitty 1.3.x upgrade

Hi! Using external services for deliverability?

I have a Mailman 3 server up and running but I'm terrified to migrate to it from my existing Mailman 2 provider for fear that services like Gmail will randomly start blacklisting my IP with little I can do about it. I have SPF records set up so I'm hoping I'll be Ok but I'd like to have a backup plan. Has anyone ever tried using an external service like Mailgun or Sendgrid as a relay? I tried both but couldn't get either to work due to their sender authentication mechanism. They want all 'From:' headers to be from domains that are pre-authenticated as senders. But Mailman keeps the 'From' header from the original sender so it won't match any authenticated domains. Right? Is there anything to be done here or do I just have to migrate and pray?

hidden list is hidden even to the owner

Hi, I am not sure, if it is designed this way, or I am doing something wrong. I created a list in MM3 as a hidden list, meaning: Show list on index page: NO and assigned the owner. When I login as Postorius web admin, I see the list on the list page which is listed as: (unadvertised*). This is fine. But when the owner or moderator login to Postorius they don't see the list at all. Of course if they add the list name at the end of the URL, they get to the list and as the owner can manage it too. My question is: I am just not sure, if I am missing something or this is how it is supposed to work? You could expect, that the owner or the moderator should see the list as (unadvertised*) too. Hey Team, I'm new to Mailman and after some failed attempts to install from git on CentOS8, I have just installed it on Ubuntu 20.04 using mostly aptitude. But it's not quite working and I want to increase the log level to better understand the problem. I did see another post that suggested that I add to /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg [logging.template] level: debug But that doesn't work for me. For example, after using that `mailman conf` doesn't list and debug values and as far as I can tell, the service, even after restarting, is not logging any more than it was. On the other hand, if I add [logging.smtp] level: debug Invoking `mailman conf` will reflect that new loglevel. This started me down the path of trying to figure out the configuration system of mailman in hope that that will save me time down the road. I have read https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/config/docs/config.html but that doesn't seem to agree with what I'm seeing. For an additional example, my mailman.cfg file has a "logging.debian" section, but I don't see that section listed in the `mailman conf` output. Why would that be? I don't see in the documentation if `mailman conf` only sees values after the service is restarted. Nevertheless, restarting mailman hasn't helped. What guidance can you give? Moderation of posts via email is not working in mailman 3

Hi Team, In mailman 2, few of my users used to approve the held messages through the mail by writing Approved: header and the password of the list in the first line of the reply mail to the "confirm" attachment in the mail notification of the held messages. But after I started migrating my distribution lists from mailman 2 to mailman 3, my users are complaining that they could not approve the posts or the held messages through the mail as they usually do while they were browsing their lists in mailman 2. Is there any bug or limitation in mailman 3 or if I am doing any wrong at the server side? User settings triggers error

Server 500 error for just one list, just one page

I am having a curious problem with just ONE list management page for ONE list on my server. Every other list I've checked, and every other management page for this affected list, seem fine. But when I go to the Subscribers page for this one list I get a Server 500 error, and I can't find anything in the apache or mailman logs to give me a clue (granted I'm not sure I know for sure where all the different logs are). So specifically this page: https://udfcd-lists.org/mailman3/postorius/lists/alarms-all.udfcd-lists.org… For a list called "alarms-all" obviously. Any ideas? I'm able to review the list, it's members, etc in the PostsgreSQL tables and I'm not seeing any members with funky characters in their address - the one thing I could think of to check. Sendgrid seems to be choking on that because it needs to check if sending domain has been validated. If there is no sending domain it seems to reject. Why does Mailman do this? Can it be changed? Hyperkitty 403 Forbidden Error

I'm in the process of setting up mailman3. The only problem I seem to be having is getting Hyperkitty to archive messages. Rather than the authorisation problems people have previously asked about on the list, I am getting a 403 error... Relaying email from external SMTP server (office365 or Exchange)

Hi, I have installed mailman3 with postfix. The server is working fine. To protect the IPs from blacklisting, I want to relay all emails from postfix/mailman to external SMTP servers like O365, Gmail, or our exchange server. Could you please confirm is this possible. And how to do its configuration. Key Error when clicking on a list

I looked back and tried to see if this is related to the Filter_Vhost = true error. In the email log I received at the bottom where it lists settings I am seeing Filter_Vhost = false. So I am guessing it is not related I could be wrong though. I can see lists populated that have been created, but when I click to open them it immediately goes to page titled "Server Error" and reading "An error occurred while processing your request.". This is part of the email, I can include the rest with settings if that will help. Question: Reduce cross-posting to multiple lists (either BCC: or To: or CC:) Use-case: User sends email ( to: their email) and ( bcc: list1, list2 ) The sender-user and target-user1 (and target-userX) have receive_list_copy = False, and receive_own = True Issue: For mailman 3.3.1, a user receives their email from To:, however target receipients receive multiple copies of the emails. Is there a "global" max_message_size?

I'm running Mailman under Docker (maxking). I've a test list with a max_message_size set to 0 (unlimited). I know it's not what anyone should be doing in production, but I still want to test this. I've sent a series of messages with increasingly larger attachments to the list. Going up in 5MB increments, I find that while a message with a 15MB attachement gets through to the list members, a 20MB one doesn't. The interesting thing is the message in the mail logs: Jun 19 11:44:50 venus postfix/lmtp[17630]: C0C7928564: to=<mj(a)lists.scss.tcd.ie>, relay=172.19.199.2[172.19.199.2]:8024, delay=109, delays=2.2/0.04/0.01/107, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host 172.19.199.2[172.19.199.2] said: 552 Error: Too much mail data (in reply to end of DATA command)) So 172.19.199.2 is complaining about "Too much mail data". That's the IP address of the mailman-core container. I'm wondering why this is happening, and where the decision is being made, as it seems at odds with the fact that the mailing list has no limit on message size. locked files problem after reboot

hey, I have got a problem with flufl.lock in mailman3. Exim: is it possible to host mailman and exim on different hosts? Howto?

as of the documentation, https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/docs/mta.h… , exim4 (and postfix similarly) need to have access to the mailman filesystem (MM3_HOME=/opt/mailman/var). If exim and MM would be on different hosts (or different docker environments), how would we need to configure that?

'Large' means - around 15k mailing lists - 36k incoming messages per day - 270k outgoing messages per day distributed to recipients Is there preference from performance point of view? how to delete a list member using the Linux command line

I have Mailman 3.2.1 installed (on Debian Linux), using exim4 as the MTA. I have been trying to figure out how to use the Linux command line to add members to a list and delete members from a list, but am having trouble with deleting. Here is what works for adding a list member... % echo mike(a)foo.com | mailman members --add - mylist(a)domain.org Here is what works for viewing the list members... % mailman members mylist(a)domain.org But I'm having trouble deleting a member. Here is what I have tried that didn't work... # echo mike(a)foo.com | mailman members --delete - mylist(a)domain.org Usage: mailman members [OPTIONS] LISTSPEC Try "mailman members -h" for help. LTMP to Postfix problem

On one of my mailman 3 servers, I am having a problem with Postfix failing to deliver email to Mailman. I keep seeing this in the mail.log: status=deferred (connect to 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:8024: Connection refused) What is causing this and how can I fix it? -- Please let me know if you need further assistance. Mailman do not honor non-members moderation setting sometimes

Some of our users reported that their list do not honor the nonmembers moderation setting sometimes. We were not able to repeat the issue consistently earlier. Luckily, we found the following way to repeat the issue: 1) Create a new list with user(a)example.com as owner. (Ordinary disussion mailing list style) 2) Change the list Settings -> Message Acceptance -> Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list: Discard 3) Add a non-member user(a)example.com and change the moderation setting to Hold for Moderation 4) Send an email to the list using user(a)example.com. The message is discarded instead of being held. The above can also be repeated with the list setting Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list: Accept immediately. The message sent from user(a)example.com is accepted instead of being held. So, it looks like that the non-members moderation setting is ignored for this case. Further study indicate that the issue did not happen if the owner is set to user(a)example.com *after* adding the non-member. It looks like that we can avoid the issue during list creation. However, the issue can also be triggered through other ways such as adding the non-member as member and remove. There are also ways to resolve the issue by removing all corresponding member, non-member, owner setting and add them back in the following order: non-member, owner. However, it does not always work and so I do not go into the detail at this moment to complicate the issue.

Mailman3 on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS - Best Installation Method?

Hi Everyone, I have been trying unsuccessfully for several weeks to install Mailman3 on a new Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server. First I tried to just use the Ubuntu packages, which is MM3 version 3.2.2. Unfortunately Ubuntu 20.04 also uses Python 3.8 which has a compatibility issue with MM 3.2.2. There is a bug submission submitted to the Ubuntu team. Next I tried to use the virtualenv method, as that was recommended for production anyway by Mailman installation documentation. I couldn't get that to work either, as there is again some known issue between one of the django packages and another python package called 'six'. Has anyone been able to get Mailman3 running stable on Ubuntu 20.04? What installation method did you use? At this point, I'm really tempted to just stay at MM2 until the Ubuntu packages get sorted out. I've also considered just closing the Gitlab repo and trying to set it up manually. But I feel like it isn't worth all the trouble. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. - Matt

Is it possible to add non-members in regex format in Mailman 3 ?

Hi Team, In mailman 2, I was able to add the non-members in the respective privileged box even using the regex also which will be used to add the domains instead of a single mail id. But in mailman 3, I am not allowed to add the non members in the regex format. Of course it is allowing me to add individual mail ids and give permissions. But I want to add a non-member which may be something like the entire cisco.com domain on which I want to set the rule. Hi, I came across this really useful guide (posted to the list earlier). It has all gone really well and mailman 3 is installed. However, I have an issue, when I go to login using Postorius, I get the login page when I enter my credentials the page appears to hang and eventually goes to a Error 500 page. This totally hangs all of the mailman 3 web interface (but not apache). I then have to reboot the server to even get back to the login page. Any tips please? Thanks

List invisible to moderator

I just have promoted a member to a moderator. Now when he logs in to Postorius, he gets the message "There are currently no mailing lists.". I have set "Show list on index page" to "no" before. But as a moderator, the list should be shown, right? I mean, all lists are shown to the administrator also. When I manually enter the complete URL, the moderator can see the list. I think this is a bug. Moderators should see their lists. What do you thing? Olaf

Hyperkitty CSS issue

I migrated my existing mailman3 install from using the Debian packages to a virtualenv setup. For the most part everything seems to be running fine, but I'm running into an issue where Hyperkitty 1.3.3 is referencing an incorrect CSS file. It is trying to load "/static/CACHE/css/hyperkitty.39ef00cc7454.css" which does not exist. If I replace that reference (using my browser's dev tools) with "/static/CACHE/css/output.12a071da81b1.css" everything looks fine. I've ran the collectstatic, compress, and migrate commands successfully with no change. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Removing a mail addresses and users

Hello. I tried to remove random email address signing ups (which I signed up while testing) via admin panel. After removing I tried to sign up again, but I am getting, 'A user is already registered with this e-mail address' Combing through the database, I found auth_user table in mailman3web db still contain those mail address. How to wipe email address entirely from the db so I can signup again without the 'forget password' method --abhijith

I'm about to set up a new list, and want to try out Mailman3. The only component available in Fedora, is the Mailman core package. With the /usr/libexec/mailman3/mailman command, I was able to create a list, and add a member throug the sub commands create and members. How can I read out the list configuration from here, and change settings? Do I then need to install/use other components, or is there other possibilities, e.g. using the shell command? If I get a message that needs moderation, can I do the decision from cli, or how do I do that? Thanks Lars

Mailman3 on Fedora

Hi, list! I'm running Fedora 31. The only Mailman 3 package in the Fedora repo seems to be mailman3-3.2.0-2.fc30.noarch, which is only Mailman core. My goal was to start using Mailman 3 for a new list. It seems without the other packages, it's not trivial to configure the list, please correct me if I'm wrong. And of course I don't get the archive functionality which I don't need anyway. Does anyone know whats the plan for Fedora when it comes to implementing the other components of Mailman 3, and when they will ship a newer version of the core package? Thanks, Lars

max_message_size parameter not working in mailman 3.3.1

Team, I am currently working on Mailman 3.3.1 in production environment. Today I faced an issue related to the mail size limit. One of our users has sent a mail with nearly 27M to one of the lists running on Mailman 3.3.1. Though I have configured the parameter related to the Maximum message size as '0' which I meant as no limit to the size of mail, I observed the mail is not accepted and rejected with the message "Message size limit exceeds". Weird hourly indexing error

I moved my mail server to a Digital Ocean droplet. I basically installed all the appropriate packages and then rsync’d everything that matters from my metal server up to the cloud instance. Everything more or less works fine. However, I am now getting this hourly error - see below. It is ENTIRELY possible that I was getting this error on the previous server as well, but I didn’t have www-data aliased to root so I would never have seen it. Anyone know what’s going on here? BTW, Digital Ocean is pretty awesome. Pre-cursor, I am in a new position to learn on the go and new to Linux but have been tasked with setting up a List Serv and they wanted Mailman 3 with Postorius and HyperKitty. Running on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS using Postfix and MySQL. I can open up the initial pages. With no Lists created yet. Postorius with screen readers

Hi, Just wanting to let people know that since bumping to Postorius 1.3.3 I am seeing a real improvement in access to the Mailman settings and tabs using a screen reader with Chrome. When navigating through the tabs you are hearing two iterations of the tab, the first for example saying "Held Messages 0 tab" which is not a link, but then if you arrow down past that you hear "Held Messages 0" which is advertised as a link and if you hit enter on those it changes the page to the requested view. Hey everyone, There was a critical bug reported yesterday which would cause users to get 404 pages instead of their list options page. Upon investigation, it was found that the bug was related to bumping of Mailman Core's API version to 3.1 in django-mailman3 1.3.3 release. Because this bug can cause problems accessing several pages in web interface, we have a quick bugfix release for you. If you have already upgraded to 1.3.3 and don't wish to do another upgrade/restart, you have an option to run the command below to avoid the bug: $ python manage.py clear_cache -a This should invalidate the cache entries which cause the 404 bug. Emailing a list from the list server

Ok, I admit I am baffled by this one. I cannot email a list from an account on the list server itself (for example, programmatically by script, but also manually) using mail / mailx / mutt / etc from the command line. The emails just disappear into the ether. I can email other arbitrary addresses just fine, including real users hosted on that server. Mailman rewrite the Cc header incorrectly

I just notice that if I send an email to a list with a Cc header broken into multiple lines and the pair of double quotes are put in different lines, the email addresses afterwards will be wrongly rewritten. For example, CC: "ABC DEF (XYZ)" <name(a)example.com> It will become the following after going through the mailing list: CC: XYZ <"ABC DEF"@mail.server.name> It seems that Outlook often split the To/Cc header into multiple lines and they often add double quotes to the full name of the users. Migrating Mailman 3 lists

Hello Mailman users, I know how to migrate mailman 2 lists to a new mailman 3 server. However I do not know how to migrate a mailman 3 list from one mailman 3 server to another one. Are there any instructions or protocol on how to accomplish this? The Mailman 3 server I want to migrate *from* was setup using Docker. Hi all - I just wanted to share my perf-load results of Mailman3. Hopefully community finds helpful. I realized mailman3 cannot run on AWS t3a* ( 2cpu or 4cpu @ 8 gigs ) Specs: AWS EC2 - m5a.xl and c5.xl Version: mailman 3.3.1rc1 What: Duration load test of 30k emails across 200 lists. Some lists have a depth of 9k users, other lists have 100 emails address. * create 200 lists of random names Results * Postorius kept hanging on vanilla AWS LTS and LTS2 image. I had to tune the kernel settings ( somax, syslimits, tcp wmem) * gunicorn.cfg must be created and workers/threads property must be added. I noticed hanging python and tcp/socket errors * Total run time = 50mins for fresh-load

Bootstrap 4 completely changes the CSS grid model using the new Flexbox. There might be some small changes or breakages when using on mobile. Please report such issues to us via Gitlab! Some other notable changes are in Postorius, which includes many more list settings exposed include content filtering settings, bounce processing (which was added in the previous release of Mailman Core) settings and some other ones. You can now also specify a reason when rejecting held messages. There was also a gnarly bug, which caused the name of some members to be the string "None". For the longest time, I couldn't figure out the reason for it, but it ended up being a simple fix in mailmanclient's json serialization of display_name, which would result in Python's None value being passed as string "None" to Mailman's API for subscription. There is also better support for filtering visible lists based on the current vhost, which I see a few people are already waiting for from mailman-users list. A full changelog has been added to each project in the top. These are still pre-releases and if you are installing via pip, you would need the `--pre` flag, for e.g. $ pip install --pre --upgrade postorius hyperkitty As with all other releases, these have also been running on mail.python.org and lists.mailman3.org for some time now, so it should be relatively safe to upgrade to. Updating from Ubuntu-20.04 LTE installation

Hi Mark, thank you for the fast solution of our subscription problem - which brings me to the next step: Our installation was done by "apt-get install" in Ubuntu 20, thus still running MM 3.2.2 (and python 3.8.2). Do you have any advise, how to upgrade from there to your current version? I know this might be a bit dangerous, but with today's VMs the risk is much less than it used to be: Do you think it would be possible, just to replace the code and library parts, keeping the database and config files as is? If not, what would you do when you have to keep the system running (except for maintenance time, of course)? Thank you again and and have a nice relaxed weekend Peter

Hi *, on MM2 systems, we used to subscribe people via an external application by sending an e-mail to the request address with a subject of "subscribe address=user(a)example.com" This returns a "bad argument" in MM3 - any ideas how to solve this? We cannot set the actual from-address in a foreign application... Thank you Peter

/hyperkitty/list/ shows "example.com". Not the actual domain name that I configured. How can I fix this? I would not mind too much about hyperkitty showing "example.com". But the more important issue is that mailman3 archives are not updated. Therefore I guess it's a symptom of a more important issue. E-mails to the list are delivered to e-mail subscribers, though. Seems only the web part is broken. Using Debian buster mailman3 packages. In configuration folder /etc/mailman3 I cannot find any textual string saying "example.com". (`grep -r -i example /etc/mailman3`) Therefore I don't know where mailman3 gets "example.com" from. Could be broken linux file/folder access rights? Any way to debug? Kind regards, Patrick

I'm trying to use AWS SES as a mail relay for IP Health and other tidbits and it seems like it's very particular on what the headers look like. The FROM field has to be from a verified email meaning the list name has to be in the from field. Github auth deprecated API

The version of mailman3 I'm running apparently uses a deprecated API for GitHub authentication. Does anyone know if this has been fixed? Hi, I am following the guide here: https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/commands/docs/create.h… and am falling at the first hurdle. command = cli('mailman.commands.cli_lists.create') NameError: name 'cli' is not defined. I am running the command in the mailman shell. Doing a help("mailman.commands") works so Python can see that. I thought it might require pyCLI so I installed that but still no joy.

Understanding of members, accounts

Hi *, meanwhile we have subscribed a few addresses by the method of mass subscription. As these have to be private lists, users will have to provide a password to get access to the archives. I haven't found a way to provide, as admin, passwords to users. So I assumed users should go to "login", "lost password" and thus set their own. Alas, their e-mail addresses are not found in any list. Is the solution to "sign up", using one's very e-mail address already in the system? I would like to understand why there is a difference between being (only) a subscribed member and a member having an account - or, what might be the advantage of being a member without an account? Handling of Mail from non-subscribers

Hi *, I have a fresh setup of MM3 on Ubuntu 20, installed by apt-get. It seems to be running fine so far, except for some (to me) strange behaviour: When posting to the list as a non-subscriber, I see the mail coming in on mailman's smtp.log, then it vanishes. No notice of this mail being hold is sent to the sender, no notice to the moderator, and logging into Postorius as owner of the list, it is not showing up in "Held messages" "Hold for moderation" has been set. PSA: Avoiding spam-scanning outgoing mailman3 mail

So I integrated SpamAssassin into my mailman3 server the other day, using the ubuntu packages which implement the “standard” SpamAssassin install with a filter on port 25 and re-injection using /usr/sbin/sendmail. From postfix/master.cf: # ========================================================================== # service type private unpriv chroot wakeup maxproc command + args # (yes) (yes) (yes) (never) (100) # ========================================================================== smtp inet n - n - 10 smtpd -o content_filter=spamassassin spamassassin unix - n n - - pipe user=debian-spamd argv=/usr/bin/spamc -f -e /usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -f ${sender} ${recipient} The problem there, of course, is that mailman3 traffic gets scanned twice: once on the way in from the original sender and once on the way out as mailman3 duplicates it to list recipients. This is because out-of-the-box mailman3 tends to be configured to re-inject list email via port 25, which is scanning for spam on incoming email. This is horribly inefficient, obviously, and gets worse the bigger your mailing list is. Given that it’s written in Perl, SpamAssassin isn’t the most efficient thing in the first place. Anyway, I got literally zero hits on solving this when I googled it, so here’s mine to save future mailman3+SpamAssassin users some grief. The easy fix was to edit the [mta] setting in mailman.cfg to deliver email via the submit port instead, which has no filtering applied to it: smtp_host: localhost # using the submit port bypasses spamassassin filtering on outgoing list email smtp_port: 587 smtp_user: mm3send <— I created this user for this purpose smtp_pass: <password-for-mm3send-user> This works great and can be applied to any email filtering. It links to the correct domain, but the text isn’t right - it’s the first domain name I was using at the beginning of my install for testing. I’d like to update it, but can’t find what to change. Is there the equivalent of the post log from mailman 2.x available? I see every logging option but that one listed here: https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/config/docs/config.htm… <https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/config/docs/config.htm…> That was a handy way to track list traffic statistics and I was hoping to munge up the old mm_stats script to use the mailman3 logging format. How to remove a nonmember from a list

Hi, I've been banging my head against the proverbial wall for more than a day trying to remove nonmembers from a list (I am a Mailman3 and Python novice so that might account for something, but anyway ...) According to https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/message…, it should be possible to do: MailingList.remove_role('nonmember', 'email_address(a)example.com') However I can't get this to work. I think I have manage to track down all the required imports. This is what I see: TypeError: remove_role() missing 1 required positional argument: 'address' More digging in the docs seems to indicate that a third parameter is required - "self". At this point though I am way out of my depth, and would appreciate any guidance. Thanks very much Stephen Kenny

HyperKitty Question

Okay, I have mailman3 working to allow me to send/receive emails. postorius seems to be working fine. My only issue seems to be with hyperkitty saving the archive. postorius seems to be working fine. Hyperkitty on the other hand is failing. I have nginx running with multiple website being serviced from the same server. I updated the config where port 80 gets redirected to SSL. I tried setting mailman3-hyperkitty.conf to both: base_url: http://localhost/hyperkitty/ base_url: https://lists.domain.com/hyperkitty/ But neither seem to be working. So Postfix thinks it is asked to relay from 98.199.98.177 to domain.com. Note that 98.199.98.177 is a Comcast network IP. It has nothing to do with gmail. So is the connect comes from Mailman on the Postfix machine, why does Postfix think it comes from 98.199.98.177. Separating Lists by Domain

I have successfully setup a second domain with my Mailman3 setup. I also created a list using the second domain. So I have two domains with one list each. The issue I see at this point is all of the lists are shown via Postorius regardless of the list domain used. Is it possible to have only the lists to show that are part of the domain being used to access? For example: http://domaina.com/postorius/lists/ Only listnames(a)domaina.com show up. http://domainb.com/postorius/lists/ Only listnames(a)domainb.com show up. Right now both domaina AND domainb lists showup regardless of the domain being used to access Postorius. The same goes for Hyperkitty as well. Brian

Running mailman3 on AWS and dealing with SES email verification

Hi, This seems to be a very basic question and/or issue, but I could not find a reliable for it: Assume a list member with the email address like (just as an example) joe.student(a)university.edu<mailto:joe.student@university.edu> sends an email to a list, Mailman gets the email, processes it and would try to send that email to all members with a sender field as: 'joe.student(a)university.edu<mailto:joe.student@university.edu>'. plus listname(a)listserver.TLD<mailto:listname@listserver.TLD> AWS allows verified email addresses to send an email from an EC2 to internet, so the listname(a)listserver.TLD<mailto:listname@listserver.TLD> is OK, because listserver.TLD is already verified, BUT Joe's email is not and cannot be, because there are thousands of list users and they can change daily. The result is that Mailman's try to send the email would fail with the following error message: Message rejected: Email address is not verified. The following identities failed the check in region US-EAST-1: joe.student(a)university.edu<mailto:joe.student@university.edu> I changed the list property and made it an anonymous one, and it started sending the emails to the whole list members, but only with listname(a)listserver.TLD<mailto:listname@listserver.TLD> as the sender. So the list recipients cannot know the initiator of the discussion. I found some solution: * Asking the members to add their email to the signature * manipulating the from field and add the name of the sender as a comment, not that easy, needs some Python code * manipulating the from files and replacing the @ with something else, not that easy, needs some Python code * . . . More important: None of these would allow a simple click on the reply bottom to send the email to the original sender. I am thinking of running mailman on-premise and use our email relay, which we have full control on. But really, there is no elegant solution for this? I already opened a ticket with AWS support and they just insisted on their policy of verification. Hi, I created a list called list_b@newlistserv.<tld<mailto:list_b@newlistserv.%3ctld>> , and added a user to it and invited the user. The user got a welcome email, when the user replies with help, The email gets rejected with the message: list_b wasn't found at newlistserv.<tld> and I see this entry in the postfix log on the server: postfix/smtpd[6757]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from mail-eopbgr750113.outbound.xxx: 550 5.1.1 <list_b(a)newlistserv.xxx>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table; from=<xxx> to=<list_b(a)newlistserv.xxx> proto=ESMTP helo=<NAM02-BL2-obe.outbound.protection.outlook.com> I am new to mailman3, my understanding was, maybe wrong, that when I create a list, mailman3 adds that to the local list of users. Hello, I am quite new to Mailman3 and have been trying to get a working local test setup on a single VM (Centos07) I have issue where if I send an email to the list. it does not send emails on to the people subscribed to that list. Note the steps below were put together from memory after a few days of repeatably trying different things so there will be some inaccuracies I have mailman running on same local box as postfix, postorius and hyperkitty. Importing Mailman 2 Lists apart from Django

Hello Mailman Users, Are there instructions on importing a Mailman 2 list into a Mailman 3 core installation only? Does the import21 script not need Django/Postorius/Hyperkitty? It seems Django is required to import archives I guess because of the use of Hyperkitty. How about importing archives without having a Django installation? Is that what the prototype archiver for? We are getting ready to start working on a custom forum application for Mailman 3 (called Empathy) and I am would like to import some mailman 2 archives into the development server to work with. Hi, on a debian10 I have mm3 installed via apt-get apt-get install mailman3-full dpkg-reconfigure mailman3 dpkg-reconfigure mailman3-web I have this minor issue https://webserver/mailman3 redirects to http://webserver/mailman/postorius/lists/ that doesn't exist. The same problem form django admin page to return to lists https://website/mailman3/admin/sites/site In the upper right corner I have a link to https://webserver/mailman3 that redirects to https://mailman/postorius/lists/ I searched for a redirect but without success. Hi, after importing old mm2 messages into mm3 archive I found that hyperkitty dos not show the lists index in home page if FILTER_VHOST = True https://website/mailman3/hyperkitty/ show an empty lists. If I add list/list@domain1 I can see the archive. I think the problem is the domain name example.com that I saw in the upper left corner. If in django administration I rename that site it works. But having more than one domain this is not a solution. what i need is to separate different domains https:/website1/mailman3/hyperkitty shows some lists https:/website2/mailman3/hyperkitty shows other lists Where am I wrong? What have I to change in hyperkitty to have the correct domain shown? Is there a documentation to configure that? Hyperkitty version is 1.2.2 Thank you. -- Gelpi ing. But that application is on another machine and so I need to allow accessibility from another machine also. Along with that as I am trying to access from another machine I need to access the REST API of mailman 3 over https only. MM2 to MM3 on debian 10

Hi, on a debian 10 with MM3 I'm trying to migrate form some old MM2 mailing lists. I know that not all can work. In my old lists I have email and regular expressions in reject_these_nonmembers and discard_these_nonmembers After importing the list all these email are in non member list. All these email have Delivery status enabled. Does this mean that all of them will receive any message sent to the list? The moderation rule is correct, but if I understood correct Delivery status should be disabled. Shashi, This whole thread is off-topic for the developers list. This list is for development of Mailman, not for teaching people to use it. Read the whole recommended documentation before you ask busy developers to tutor you in very basic things. There's a mailman-users(a)mailman3.org list for users to help each other. All of the Mailman developers who might be willing to answer your questions are there as well, but there are also many experienced users, some of whom have experimented with the REST API who will also help. Please reply there for further help. (Reply-To is set.) That said, there are plenty of URLs in the API documentation. Here's a hint: search for "dump_json". That function takes an URL. You may want https: instead of http: in your URLs, and you may need to change the port from 9001, depending on the configuration of your REST server. Try it with simple GET requests for information first, such as for domains or lists. You can also do these requests with an ordinary web browser, though I don't know what it will do with the JSON-formatted reply. If you don't have domains and lists configured, I suppose the informational requests will come back as empty JSON objects. It should be safe to make them. You can either use Postorius to bootstrap a few example domains, lists, and users, or (the hard way) figure out how to POST appropriate requests. I don't recommend trying to update the backend DBMS by hand; the schema is quite complicated. I don't know how to use curl to update Mailman's databases. That requires a POST request which I have never done with curl. The POST request needs to be valid JSON. The more I think about this, the less I think your idea of using curl is worthwhile, because formatting JSON requests by hand is going to be a real annoyance and a great way to mess up your database with spurious information. You're really going to want programmatic support for this. But that's already all available in Python in the Mailman system. It's up to you, but I feel a responsibility to warn you that using curl is not going to be simpler than learning enough Python to do these things. Regards,

Bounce processing

Hi, Just upgraded to Mailman 3.3.1 at the beginning of the week and its very refreshing to have bounce processing working after all this time, stops the continued delivery to dud email addresses causing problems with junk email scoring. Anyway after a few days of using this I have noted the following feedback: When users are set to disabled after their bounce score reaches a certain threshold, I seem to recall on Mailman 2 they were sent an email with a link to reactivate their subscription. On Mailman 3 they are told to contact the list admin, I have had messages from a few subscribers regarding this asking how they can re-enable delivery. I am also getting bounces that look like they are coming from Qmail (Yahoo addresses) which are being forwarded to the list owner as unrecognised bounces. Should the type of bounces that Mailman 2 was handling be handled in Mailman 3 or is the way that the addresses are extracted different? I have disabled the relevant users but do have the bounces to hand. Thanks. Andrew.

Can't open PID file after start.

Different Mail Domain Cause Key Error

I have a client that requires his list address to be list(a)domain.com. But since he is using domain.com for an external website, he has to access his list via Postorius using list.domain.com. So here is what I did: Django Admin Add Site: list.domain.com Add Mail Domain: domain.com (Site selected is list.domain.com) Postorius Add Domain: Mailhost is domain.com. Web Host is list.domain.com (list.domain.com) I have list.domain.com listed in the allowed hosts in settings_local.py. I even added domain.com there as well. When I try to access Postorius using list.domain.com I get a "An error occurred while processing your request." message and the logs shows the dreaded: ``` 'Internal Server Error: /mailman3/lists/ KeyError at /mailman3/lists/ 'file' ``` Did I miss a step here? MM3 gateway errors and frequent reboot needs

We have had to reboot the list server almost every week and wonder if there is something leaking and eating up resources. I does not appear to be memory, though. The server is slow to respond (could be because it's overseas) and then after some time we get intermittent gateway errors and finally we cannot access the lists online because of the gateway errors. It appears to me that the issue is with Postorius, but I could be wrong. Do files get closed after opening? Are we alone having such issues? Please advise. PS: My old MM2 installation could (and did) run without any help. Not so with MM3.
