Mailman do not honor non-members moderation setting sometimes

Some of our users reported that their list do not honor the nonmembers moderation setting sometimes. We were not able to repeat the issue consistently earlier. Luckily, we found the following way to repeat the issue: 1) Create a new list with user(a)example.com as owner. (Ordinary disussion mailing list style) 2) Change the list Settings -> Message Acceptance -> Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list: Discard 3) Add a non-member user(a)example.com and change the moderation setting to Hold for Moderation 4) Send an email to the list using user(a)example.com. The message is discarded instead of being held. The above can also be repeated with the list setting Default action to take when a non-member posts to the list: Accept immediately. The message sent from user(a)example.com is accepted instead of being held. So, it looks like that the non-members moderation setting is ignored for this case. Further study indicate that the issue did not happen if the owner is set to user(a)example.com *after* adding the non-member. It looks like that we can avoid the issue during list creation. However, the issue can also be triggered through other ways such as adding the non-member as member and remove. There are also ways to resolve the issue by removing all corresponding member, non-member, owner setting and add them back in the following order: non-member, owner. However, it does not always work and so I do not go into the detail at this moment to complicate the issue.

Affinity Mailman Is Now Beta

mailman2 vs Mailman3 database usage

Do you have a list of the information that is stored in the DB? Mailman3 on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS - Best Installation Method?

Hi Everyone, I have been trying unsuccessfully for several weeks to install Mailman3 on a new Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server. First I tried to just use the Ubuntu packages, which is MM3 version 3.2.2. Unfortunately Ubuntu 20.04 also uses Python 3.8 which has a compatibility issue with MM 3.2.2. There is a bug submission submitted to the Ubuntu team. Next I tried to use the virtualenv method, as that was recommended for production anyway by Mailman installation documentation. I couldn't get that to work either, as there is again some known issue between one of the django packages and another python package called 'six'. Has anyone been able to get Mailman3 running stable on Ubuntu 20.04? What installation method did you use? At this point, I'm really tempted to just stay at MM2 until the Ubuntu packages get sorted out. I've also considered just closing the Gitlab repo and trying to set it up manually. But I feel like it isn't worth all the trouble. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. - Matt

Is it possible to add non-members in regex format in Mailman 3 ?

Hi Team, In mailman 2, I was able to add the non-members in the respective privileged box even using the regex also which will be used to add the domains instead of a single mail id. But in mailman 3, I am not allowed to add the non members in the regex format. Of course it is allowing me to add individual mail ids and give permissions. But I want to add a non-member which may be something like the entire cisco.com domain on which I want to set the rule. Hi, I came across this really useful guide (posted to the list earlier). It has all gone really well and mailman 3 is installed. However, I have an issue, when I go to login using Postorius, I get the login page when I enter my credentials the page appears to hang and eventually goes to a Error 500 page. This totally hangs all of the mailman 3 web interface (but not apache). I then have to reboot the server to even get back to the login page. Any tips please? Thanks

List invisible to moderator

I just have promoted a member to a moderator. Now when he logs in to Postorius, he gets the message "There are currently no mailing lists.". I have set "Show list on index page" to "no" before. But as a moderator, the list should be shown, right? I mean, all lists are shown to the administrator also. When I manually enter the complete URL, the moderator can see the list. I think this is a bug. Moderators should see their lists. What do you thing? Olaf

Hyperkitty CSS issue

I migrated my existing mailman3 install from using the Debian packages to a virtualenv setup. For the most part everything seems to be running fine, but I'm running into an issue where Hyperkitty 1.3.3 is referencing an incorrect CSS file. It is trying to load "/static/CACHE/css/hyperkitty.39ef00cc7454.css" which does not exist. If I replace that reference (using my browser's dev tools) with "/static/CACHE/css/output.12a071da81b1.css" everything looks fine. I've ran the collectstatic, compress, and migrate commands successfully with no change. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Removing a mail addresses and users

Hello. I tried to remove random email address signing ups (which I signed up while testing) via admin panel. After removing I tried to sign up again, but I am getting, 'A user is already registered with this e-mail address' Combing through the database, I found auth_user table in mailman3web db still contain those mail address. How to wipe email address entirely from the db so I can signup again without the 'forget password' method --abhijith

I'm about to set up a new list, and want to try out Mailman3. The only component available in Fedora, is the Mailman core package. With the /usr/libexec/mailman3/mailman command, I was able to create a list, and add a member throug the sub commands create and members. How can I read out the list configuration from here, and change settings? Do I then need to install/use other components, or is there other possibilities, e.g. using the shell command? If I get a message that needs moderation, can I do the decision from cli, or how do I do that? Thanks Lars

Mailman3 on Fedora

Hi, list! I'm running Fedora 31. The only Mailman 3 package in the Fedora repo seems to be mailman3-3.2.0-2.fc30.noarch, which is only Mailman core. My goal was to start using Mailman 3 for a new list. It seems without the other packages, it's not trivial to configure the list, please correct me if I'm wrong. And of course I don't get the archive functionality which I don't need anyway. Does anyone know whats the plan for Fedora when it comes to implementing the other components of Mailman 3, and when they will ship a newer version of the core package? Thanks, Lars

max_message_size parameter not working in mailman 3.3.1

Team, I am currently working on Mailman 3.3.1 in production environment. Today I faced an issue related to the mail size limit. One of our users has sent a mail with nearly 27M to one of the lists running on Mailman 3.3.1. Though I have configured the parameter related to the Maximum message size as '0' which I meant as no limit to the size of mail, I observed the mail is not accepted and rejected with the message "Message size limit exceeds". Weird hourly indexing error

I moved my mail server to a Digital Ocean droplet. I basically installed all the appropriate packages and then rsync’d everything that matters from my metal server up to the cloud instance. Everything more or less works fine. However, I am now getting this hourly error - see below. It is ENTIRELY possible that I was getting this error on the previous server as well, but I didn’t have www-data aliased to root so I would never have seen it. Anyone know what’s going on here? BTW, Digital Ocean is pretty awesome. Postorius endless loading on Sign in / Register then "Internal Server Error"

Pre-cursor, I am in a new position to learn on the go and new to Linux but have been tasked with setting up a List Serv and they wanted Mailman 3 with Postorius and HyperKitty. Running on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS using Postfix and MySQL. I can open up the initial pages. With no Lists created yet. Postorius with screen readers

Hi, Just wanting to let people know that since bumping to Postorius 1.3.3 I am seeing a real improvement in access to the Mailman settings and tabs using a screen reader with Chrome. When navigating through the tabs you are hearing two iterations of the tab, the first for example saying "Held Messages 0 tab" which is not a link, but then if you arrow down past that you hear "Held Messages 0" which is advertised as a link and if you hit enter on those it changes the page to the requested view. django-mailman3 1.3.4 bugfix release

Hey everyone, There was a critical bug reported yesterday which would cause users to get 404 pages instead of their list options page. Upon investigation, it was found that the bug was related to bumping of Mailman Core's API version to 3.1 in django-mailman3 1.3.3 release. Because this bug can cause problems accessing several pages in web interface, we have a quick bugfix release for you. If you have already upgraded to 1.3.3 and don't wish to do another upgrade/restart, you have an option to run the command below to avoid the bug: $ python manage.py clear_cache -a This should invalidate the cache entries which cause the 404 bug. duplicate dkim headers w/ AWS SES

Emailing a list from the list server

Ok, I admit I am baffled by this one. I cannot email a list from an account on the list server itself (for example, programmatically by script, but also manually) using mail / mailx / mutt / etc from the command line. The emails just disappear into the ether. I can email other arbitrary addresses just fine, including real users hosted on that server. Hi *, we are trying to dispose of automatic replies like "out of office" etc. For these ends, we have set Header to "subject" (w/o quotes) Pattern to ".*out.of.office.*" Action to "Hold for moderation" However, these mails are passed through to the list. Mailman rewrite the Cc header incorrectly

I just notice that if I send an email to a list with a Cc header broken into multiple lines and the pair of double quotes are put in different lines, the email addresses afterwards will be wrongly rewritten. For example, CC: "ABC DEF (XYZ)" <name(a)example.com> It will become the following after going through the mailing list: CC: XYZ <"ABC DEF"@mail.server.name> It seems that Outlook often split the To/Cc header into multiple lines and they often add double quotes to the full name of the users. Hello Mailman users, I know how to migrate mailman 2 lists to a new mailman 3 server. However I do not know how to migrate a mailman 3 list from one mailman 3 server to another one. Are there any instructions or protocol on how to accomplish this? The Mailman 3 server I want to migrate *from* was setup using Docker. Hi all - I just wanted to share my perf-load results of Mailman3. Hopefully community finds helpful. I realized mailman3 cannot run on AWS t3a* ( 2cpu or 4cpu @ 8 gigs ) Specs: AWS EC2 - m5a.xl and c5.xl Version: mailman 3.3.1rc1 What: Duration load test of 30k emails across 200 lists. Some lists have a depth of 9k users, other lists have 100 emails address. * create 200 lists of random names Results * Postorius kept hanging on vanilla AWS LTS and LTS2 image. I had to tune the kernel settings ( somax, syslimits, tcp wmem) * gunicorn.cfg must be created and workers/threads property must be added. I noticed hanging python and tcp/socket errors * Total run time = 50mins for fresh-load

Bootstrap 4 completely changes the CSS grid model using the new Flexbox. There might be some small changes or breakages when using on mobile. Please report such issues to us via Gitlab! Some other notable changes are in Postorius, which includes many more list settings exposed include content filtering settings, bounce processing (which was added in the previous release of Mailman Core) settings and some other ones. You can now also specify a reason when rejecting held messages. There was also a gnarly bug, which caused the name of some members to be the string "None". For the longest time, I couldn't figure out the reason for it, but it ended up being a simple fix in mailmanclient's json serialization of display_name, which would result in Python's None value being passed as string "None" to Mailman's API for subscription. There is also better support for filtering visible lists based on the current vhost, which I see a few people are already waiting for from mailman-users list. A full changelog has been added to each project in the top. These are still pre-releases and if you are installing via pip, you would need the `--pre` flag, for e.g. $ pip install --pre --upgrade postorius hyperkitty As with all other releases, these have also been running on mail.python.org and lists.mailman3.org for some time now, so it should be relatively safe to upgrade to. Updating from Ubuntu-20.04 LTE installation

Hi Mark, thank you for the fast solution of our subscription problem - which brings me to the next step: Our installation was done by "apt-get install" in Ubuntu 20, thus still running MM 3.2.2 (and python 3.8.2). Do you have any advise, how to upgrade from there to your current version? I know this might be a bit dangerous, but with today's VMs the risk is much less than it used to be: Do you think it would be possible, just to replace the code and library parts, keeping the database and config files as is? If not, what would you do when you have to keep the system running (except for maintenance time, of course)? Thank you again and and have a nice relaxed weekend Peter

Hi *, on MM2 systems, we used to subscribe people via an external application by sending an e-mail to the request address with a subject of "subscribe address=user(a)example.com" This returns a "bad argument" in MM3 - any ideas how to solve this? We cannot set the actual from-address in a foreign application... Thank you Peter

/hyperkitty/list/ shows "example.com". Not the actual domain name that I configured. How can I fix this? I would not mind too much about hyperkitty showing "example.com". But the more important issue is that mailman3 archives are not updated. Therefore I guess it's a symptom of a more important issue. E-mails to the list are delivered to e-mail subscribers, though. Seems only the web part is broken. Using Debian buster mailman3 packages. In configuration folder /etc/mailman3 I cannot find any textual string saying "example.com". (`grep -r -i example /etc/mailman3`) Therefore I don't know where mailman3 gets "example.com" from. Could be broken linux file/folder access rights? Any way to debug? Kind regards, Patrick

I'm trying to use AWS SES as a mail relay for IP Health and other tidbits and it seems like it's very particular on what the headers look like. The FROM field has to be from a verified email meaning the list name has to be in the from field. Github auth deprecated API

The version of mailman3 I'm running apparently uses a deprecated API for GitHub authentication. Does anyone know if this has been fixed? Hi, I am following the guide here: https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/commands/docs/create.h… and am falling at the first hurdle. command = cli('mailman.commands.cli_lists.create') NameError: name 'cli' is not defined. I am running the command in the mailman shell. Doing a help("mailman.commands") works so Python can see that. I thought it might require pyCLI so I installed that but still no joy.

Understanding of members, accounts

Hi *, meanwhile we have subscribed a few addresses by the method of mass subscription. As these have to be private lists, users will have to provide a password to get access to the archives. I haven't found a way to provide, as admin, passwords to users. So I assumed users should go to "login", "lost password" and thus set their own. Alas, their e-mail addresses are not found in any list. Is the solution to "sign up", using one's very e-mail address already in the system? I would like to understand why there is a difference between being (only) a subscribed member and a member having an account - or, what might be the advantage of being a member without an account? Handling of Mail from non-subscribers

Hi *, I have a fresh setup of MM3 on Ubuntu 20, installed by apt-get. It seems to be running fine so far, except for some (to me) strange behaviour: When posting to the list as a non-subscriber, I see the mail coming in on mailman's smtp.log, then it vanishes. No notice of this mail being hold is sent to the sender, no notice to the moderator, and logging into Postorius as owner of the list, it is not showing up in "Held messages" "Hold for moderation" has been set. Any idea how to debug this will be welcome - thank you :) Best regards, Peter

PSA: Avoiding spam-scanning outgoing mailman3 mail

So I integrated SpamAssassin into my mailman3 server the other day, using the ubuntu packages which implement the “standard” SpamAssassin install with a filter on port 25 and re-injection using /usr/sbin/sendmail. From postfix/master.cf: # ========================================================================== # service type private unpriv chroot wakeup maxproc command + args # (yes) (yes) (yes) (never) (100) # ========================================================================== smtp inet n - n - 10 smtpd -o content_filter=spamassassin spamassassin unix - n n - - pipe user=debian-spamd argv=/usr/bin/spamc -f -e /usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -f ${sender} ${recipient} The problem there, of course, is that mailman3 traffic gets scanned twice: once on the way in from the original sender and once on the way out as mailman3 duplicates it to list recipients. This is because out-of-the-box mailman3 tends to be configured to re-inject list email via port 25, which is scanning for spam on incoming email. This is horribly inefficient, obviously, and gets worse the bigger your mailing list is. Given that it’s written in Perl, SpamAssassin isn’t the most efficient thing in the first place. Anyway, I got literally zero hits on solving this when I googled it, so here’s mine to save future mailman3+SpamAssassin users some grief. The easy fix was to edit the [mta] setting in mailman.cfg to deliver email via the submit port instead, which has no filtering applied to it: smtp_host: localhost # using the submit port bypasses spamassassin filtering on outgoing list email smtp_port: 587 smtp_user: mm3send <— I created this user for this purpose smtp_pass: <password-for-mm3send-user> This works great and can be applied to any email filtering. Hello, There is a link to the root of Hyperkitty in the top left corner of my Hyperkitty pages. It links to the correct domain, but the text isn’t right - it’s the first domain name I was using at the beginning of my install for testing. I’d like to update it, but can’t find what to change.
