Greetings, Some of my lists have started displaying this behavior — when you try to access the list page(s), you get a page with this message: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please restart Mailman core. My mailman-core docker container is running, as are mailman-django-uwsgi, mailman-nginx and mailman-postfix. Restarting the containers doesn't change this behavior. Google suggests restarting mailman core. Or that we might not be using the correct account name, password or port. The weird thing is that it is not all lists. Most of them seem to be fine. Which suggests to me that the issue is with a few lists, but not systemwide, so I think my settings in mailman.cfg, settings.py, settings_local.py are likely correct. For the problem lists, I see this in the log: ERROR 2025-10-29 18:38:56,784 7 postorius Mailman REST API not available ERROR 2025-10-29 18:38:56,790 7 django.request Service Unavailable: /postorius/lists/obfuscated.name.lists.fhcrc.org/ ERROR 2025-10-29 18:38:56,790 7 django.request Service Unavailable: /postorius/lists/obfuscated.name.lists.fhcrc.org/ So, Postorius can't communicate with the API, I guess? I look at settings_local.py: MAILMAN_REST_API_URL = 'http://mailman-core:8001' I believe 8001 is the default, and since I haven't specified one in the [webservice] section of mailman.cfg, I'm assuming 8001 is correct (plus, it works for other lists). There are a few messages waiting for moderator approval — otherwise, I'd probably try just deleting the list and recreating it. Anyone have any suggestions on what else I should look at? Mailman 3 MFA with django-allauth[mfa]

Has anyone successfully got MFA working in Mailman 3 with django-allauth[mfa]? I'm struggling to get it working with the limited documentation I could find. (https://docs.allauth.org/en/dev/mfa/index.html) If signed in as a user, I can browse to /accounts/2fa/ to activate MFA, but I was hoping to make it a mandatory part of the Sign Up process. Is there something that needs to be done with the URLs somewhere? Configuring Web Front End

The next layer of the onion is configuring the web front end. Specifically setting up Django. The documentation seems to make a lot of assumptions about what I know about Django (which is nothing). I cannot find anything about what 'settings.py' should look like for mailman3. It is not even clear where it should go (/opt/mailman/var/etc?). The Django setup documentation is of no help for mailman3. Am I missing something in the wiki?

Unprocessed Bounce Mails from user with e-mailadresse with a "-" in it

The recipient address abc-given.name(a)online.de (member of list mylist(a)myserver.de) has currently an out of office responder and mails are returning to my mailman3 system as unrecognized bounce messages. I suspect the "-" in his address to be in conflict with the bounce address hyphen: <mylist-bounces+abc-given.name=online.de(a)myserver.de> Can any of you experts try on their systems, whether this a bug of mailman3 due to the "-" in the address? Notice the repeated use of the word "default" (which is a great word, by the way). This creates confusion: Default action to take when this member posts to the list. List default -- follow the list's default member action. Default Processing -- run additional checks and accept the message. Due to backwards compatibility it may be difficult to change. But if it could be modified, how about: Action to take when this member posts to the list. List default -- follow the list's default member action. Standard Processing -- run additional checks and accept the message. In other words, in the context of message acceptance, the word "default" should have a certain selected meaning. Then make extra effort to choose other words for other actions, as proposed here, "Standard Processing", or something similar.

Can't subscribe on new site/domain

Hi, I added a new site in Django: lists.example.com Usually I click on 'view site' and I can add a Domain in Postorios. In this case I get an error message and I need to add a Domain in Django. Then I can go to 'view site'. I can create a mailing list there. I've read that List Styles are essentially python plugins and/or hard coded into the source... Ugh. I was wondering, instead of hacking together some Python code, as I'm a humble PHP dev... Is it possible... 1. To pass all "style" values to the REST API upon creating a list "manually"? Essentially setting all the options on creation. 2. Where can I find a full list of options that can be set on a list, and their accepted values (boolean, string, etc) Thanks in advance!

Sendgrid experiences

Hi. I am temporarily using Sendgrid now on my Mailman instance. Initial observations have been positive. A list with 100 users is racking up email delivers though, I am on the basic paid account which gives me 50k emails per month. I was hoping to use a cheaper provider and pay overage costs per email on the assumption that I'm seeing a spike in traffic today because people have started getting the messages again. Sendgrid is maintaining the Message-Id header which is good for archiving. It is re-writing the Return-Path header though which means that bounce handling in Mailman won't work, but I think all the services do this in some way so I am happy to live with that for the moment. Mailman3 equivalent of list_owners binary

Hi, In our Mailman 2 environment we have a script that uses the binaries 'mailman/bin/list_owners' and 'mailman/bin/sync_members' to keep a list of owners up to date. This is handy for sending out service notifications to all list owners. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an exact equivalent in Mailman 3 for list_owners. I've tried using the command 'mailman members --role administrator LISTSPEC' whilst looping through each list from the output of 'mailman lists'. It almost does the job, but in cases where an owner has a display name set the sync fails as it cannot parse these lines. e.g. Cannot parse as valid email address (skipping): Smith, John <john.smith(a)example.com> I can probably try to clean the output of "mailman members" before doing 'mailman syncmembers'. I just wondered if anybody is doing something similar and has a better approach I'm missing? Thanks

Login confusion

Dear list, We've encountered an issue with Postorius after migrating from Mailman 2.1. It appears that Postorius is treating email addresses with differing capitalization as distinct user accounts. For example, <markus.grandpre(a)uni-konstanz.de> and <Markus.Grandpre(a)uni-konstanz.de> are being recognized as separate identities. This is causing significant confusion. Users registered with one capitalization pattern are not seeing the list subscriptions and settings that were previously associated with their account (imported from Mailman v2.1) which used a different capitalization. Is there a known configuration option or method within Postorius (or Mailman 3 itself) to normalize or unify account identification, effectively treating email addresses as case-insensitive for account matching? We need a solution that ensures users see their correct list memberships regardless of the capitalization they use when logging in or that was used during the original Mailman 2.1 import. Dear all, I have migrated around 300 mailing lists from Mailman 2 to Mailman 3. In most of the mailing lists we have configured "max_days_to_hold" to 2. It was working fine in Mailman 2. However, it is not working in Mailman 3. Some info about my setup: I run mailman3 in an virtual environment with postgresql-Server (all in recent versions) - operating system Ubuntu 24.04-LTS. My aim is to provide one high-level script for the daily task of list creation. - list creation via command-line script with two/three parameters like: ./create-list --listname myfirst.list(a)lists.example.org --admin-email admin-user(a)example.org [--admin-name "Peter Rabbit"] The create-list script itself should be a bash- or perl-script (I am not very familiar with python - SORRY ;-) ) I would like the scripts to trigger some curl-calls on the mailman server (from outside the mailman shell and even from outside the virtual environment) Reading the RestAPI documentation here: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/… several questions arise: 1) Can I succeed with this plan? (Are curl-calls sufficient? How well does DMARC mitigation work nowadays?

Specifically the kind where all list emails come from the the same address, with the sender in Reply-To? It seems like this /should/ be the way it works. Isn't that what Reply-To is for? Do some email clients still mess it up? If they do, wouldn't it make sense to just send them a bounce notice and tell them to clean up their act? Context: considering moving to a paid email service like Mailgun or Twilio and having random unverified email addresses in the From: header seems to be a nonstarter for them, which makes sense.

The server is set to UTC and the date command shows it has the correct date and time. And I received the message ---- 25 September at 20:57 UTC But the message is shown (incorrectly) in the archive as having been posted on 26 September at 8:57 a.m. (out by +12 hours) It should be shown as 25 September 8:57 p.m. Any pointers on where I can adjust/correct this date/time setting for future posts? Hi everybody, as per subject, I'm getting this error in the hyperkitty log when mailman daemon tries to archive a mail. I've setup the hyperkitty.cfg file with api_key = MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY in settings_local.py but still nothing. I've seen here and in GitLab issues some errors concerning a wrong api key but here it says that it wasn't sent at all. All packages installed via pip install + latest .zip release, including mailman-hyperkitty. Currently running on apache with mod_wsgi_py3 without https. Any clue? All the best, Marco Marinello

Hello to all: I thought I should share. We have: Anonymous List: No DMARC mitigation action: Wrap the message in an outer message From: the list. But our message weren't being wrapped. After I period of months, I experimented. Now I've realized that "DMARC wrapped message text" must contain some message. Now our messages are wrapped.

Postfix and Rspamd reject all Mailman messages after upgrading to Mailcow 2025-09b

Thanks for looking into this. I'm sorry to admit that I unfortunately mixed up two apparently unrelated issues. The first of these was some problem, where my mailman-installation was unable to send mails to some subscribers. The mails were rejected with SPOOFED_UNAUTH messages - I will not deal with this here. My installation is based on Debian 12 (Bookworm), with dockerized versions of Mailcow and Mailman 3 as described here: https://docs.mailcow.email/third_party/mailman3/third_party-mailman3/ The server is a VM, running on Proxmox. Mailcow and Mailman are on the same VM. It took a little time for me to setup things correctly, but mostly it seemed to work nicely. But a week ago it stopped working - I guess because I upgraded Mailcow to 2025-09b. The problem for me right now is that Rspamd rejects all messages, coming from Mailman. Postfix receives mails coming to the mailing lists, but when Mailman tries to forward the mails to the subscribers, Postfix/Rspamd block all of them. Postfix/Rspamd also block mails sent directly from Mailman, such as Welcome-messages - see an example below. In Mailcow, I have under "Options" added 172.19.199.1/24 as a "Forwarding Host" with no spam filter. I hoped this would make Rspamd happy, but apparently not. All messages, sent directly from Mailcow, pass various on-line tests of SSL, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, and are accepted by other servers (Gmail, Hotmail etc.). All web-interfaces to Mailcow and Mailman work fine. Messages to the various lists are archived, but not sent to the subscribers. HSTS Missing from HTTPS Server

In my configuration, I am using Apache to reverse proxy the requests to a uwsgi. After our security office scanned the server, it was shown that HSTS is missing from the HTTPS server. The instructions say to add some lines to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/. The only file in there is 000-default.conf that holds the configuration, but the VirtualHost is port 80. I am using an F5 to to automatically redirect port 80 to port 443, but it is still showing this vulnerability. My question is, how can enable the Virtual Host for 443 on the server? Or can that configuration be located somewhere else? Or can I just create a new Virtual Host with the added configuration for mailman? Thanks, Joe Koral

It's currently running Postgres 13, and we are looking at upgrading to 16. Can anyone tell me what the implications of such an upgrade be in the context of Mailman3? Any gotchas? Issues sending to gmail and yahoo e-mails

Has anyone experienced recent issues with Mailman3 not being able to send to gmail and yahoo e-mail addresses. I am trying to figure out if Google has our server blocked or not. When I send a manual e-mail from the server, the my yahoo e-mail gets delivered, but the gmail one does not. How about a feature to include "HTML" in the current Hyperkitty choices of (Text or Markdown) rendering? A sanitizer must be used to prevent malicious attacks. https://github.com/messense/nh3 . lxml is another package that processes html. A sanitizer would be helpful for more aspects. Permit a limited set of markdown so that messages still appear professional. Gitlab/Github don't allow arbitrary fonts or font sizes, right? Mostly remove these tags. A way that code blocks could be presented: determine an established list of known codeblock styles. Configure the sanitizer to permit this range of fonts or styling elements. By allowing them through the filter, a code styling is rendered. (It is permitted/allowed to be rendered.) Even better, when the sanitizer recognizes the fonts, it replaces them with an "official" set of codeblock fonts. Otherwise, if other font tags are entirely removed, if they are missing, the email client or web ui will decide the font selection, and it will appear "standard". In order for both email clients and Hyperkitty to view the same result, the sanitizer should ideally be applied to outgoing emails as well as rendering in the UI. That means this feature would affect more than just Hyperkitty. (i.e. mailman-core). Although, that could be implemented as a separate step, until which time emails would get a full range of HTML, without sanitizing. In this scheme, ensure outgoing emails are multi-part MIME with plain text and html versions. Some of our users are really in favor of more formatting. Others prefer plain text. Those who prefer plain text have various arguments that HTML messages will be rendered badly, and won't be legible. Questions: 1. Would "multi-part MIME with plain text and html versions both" solve the problem for users who prefer plain text? 2. What percentage of email clients that support HTML formatting when sending will also include a plain text rendering of the same content in the outgoing message? 3. Is it usually the responsibility of a receiving mail client to be able to convert HTML to plain text if the user requests it? 4. When mailman-core receives and then sends out a message, can it receive HTML, generate a plain-text version, and then send both? Thoughts?

Someone sent a short E-Mail with an Emoition in it. Is there something known about problems? The mails was sent via mailman3, but not archived due to the error. I can bring more details, please let me know, if this is requested. I did upgrade one of my mailman3 server after Abhilasj announcement: "I am pleased to announce several new releases for GNU Mailman project. 1. Django-mailman3 1.3.8 [5]" I did it via pip and all seems to be working, but when I try to discard or accept any message via postorius it shows a Forbidden 403 error CSRF verification failed. Hi all, i tried to install Mailman3 according to https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#virtualenv-inst…. I’m using Mariadb instead of PostgreSQL, but that is no problem until now. Where i fail: I have to make an entry var_dir: /opt/mailman/mm/var in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg. But there is no directory /opt/mailman/mm, and there are no subdirectories. No $var_dir, no postfix_lmtp, no postfix_transports. Where do i get those files from? TIA QNo

Disabled by line ACCOUNT_ADAPTER = 'django_mailman3.views.user_adapter.DisableSignupAdapter' (via https://gitlab.com/mailman/django-mailman3/-/merge_requests/129 ) When I want to register a few new users, I need to comment this line and restart mailmanweb. Question: is there a better method for admins to register a few new persons to Hyperkitty/Postorius so that they can act as owners and moderators of some of the lists?

Hello all, I own and run a small company (lanao.org) I am looking for companies which have put mailing lists not only as a form of general announcement but especially as the main way to collaborate. I am thinking of moving my team to a model like that and would love to read about some best practices or strong opposition to the idea. I am hopeful that out there there are companies which have resisted the Microsoft Teams virus. If your company uses mailing lists to run, please reach out.
