The recipient address abc-given.name(a)online.de (member of list mylist(a)myserver.de) has currently an out of office responder and mails are returning to my mailman3 system as unrecognized bounce messages. I suspect the "-" in his address to be in conflict with the bounce address hyphen: <mylist-bounces+abc-given.name=online.de(a)myserver.de> Can any of you experts try on their systems, whether this a bug of mailman3 due to the "-" in the address? Notice the repeated use of the word "default" (which is a great word, by the way). This creates confusion: Default action to take when this member posts to the list. List default -- follow the list's default member action. Default Processing -- run additional checks and accept the message. Due to backwards compatibility it may be difficult to change. But if it could be modified, how about: Action to take when this member posts to the list. List default -- follow the list's default member action. Standard Processing -- run additional checks and accept the message. In other words, in the context of message acceptance, the word "default" should have a certain selected meaning. Then make extra effort to choose other words for other actions, as proposed here, "Standard Processing", or something similar.

Can't subscribe on new site/domain

Hi, I added a new site in Django: lists.example.com Usually I click on 'view site' and I can add a Domain in Postorios. In this case I get an error message and I need to add a Domain in Django. Then I can go to 'view site'. I can create a mailing list there. And there is another difference to other sites: I get shown all lists of all sites/domains and not only the ones which belongs to this site/domain. What could I have done wrong here? REST API: create list: list styles

I've read that List Styles are essentially python plugins and/or hard coded into the source... Ugh. I was wondering, instead of hacking together some Python code, as I'm a humble PHP dev... Is it possible... 1. To pass all "style" values to the REST API upon creating a list "manually"? Essentially setting all the options on creation. 2. Where can I find a full list of options that can be set on a list, and their accepted values (boolean, string, etc) Thanks in advance!

Sendgrid experiences

Hi. I am temporarily using Sendgrid now on my Mailman instance. Initial observations have been positive. A list with 100 users is racking up email delivers though, I am on the basic paid account which gives me 50k emails per month. I was hoping to use a cheaper provider and pay overage costs per email on the assumption that I'm seeing a spike in traffic today because people have started getting the messages again. Sendgrid is maintaining the Message-Id header which is good for archiving. It is re-writing the Return-Path header though which means that bounce handling in Mailman won't work, but I think all the services do this in some way so I am happy to live with that for the moment. Mailman3 equivalent of list_owners binary

Hi, In our Mailman 2 environment we have a script that uses the binaries 'mailman/bin/list_owners' and 'mailman/bin/sync_members' to keep a list of owners up to date. This is handy for sending out service notifications to all list owners. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an exact equivalent in Mailman 3 for list_owners. I've tried using the command 'mailman members --role administrator LISTSPEC' whilst looping through each list from the output of 'mailman lists'. It almost does the job, but in cases where an owner has a display name set the sync fails as it cannot parse these lines. e.g. Cannot parse as valid email address (skipping): Smith, John <john.smith(a)example.com> I can probably try to clean the output of "mailman members" before doing 'mailman syncmembers'. I just wondered if anybody is doing something similar and has a better approach I'm missing? Thanks

Login confusion

Dear list, We've encountered an issue with Postorius after migrating from Mailman 2.1. It appears that Postorius is treating email addresses with differing capitalization as distinct user accounts. For example, <markus.grandpre(a)uni-konstanz.de> and <Markus.Grandpre(a)uni-konstanz.de> are being recognized as separate identities. This is causing significant confusion. Users registered with one capitalization pattern are not seeing the list subscriptions and settings that were previously associated with their account (imported from Mailman v2.1) which used a different capitalization. Is there a known configuration option or method within Postorius (or Mailman 3 itself) to normalize or unify account identification, effectively treating email addresses as case-insensitive for account matching? We need a solution that ensures users see their correct list memberships regardless of the capitalization they use when logging in or that was used during the original Mailman 2.1 import. Auto discard after max_days_to_hold not working.

Dear all, I have migrated around 300 mailing lists from Mailman 2 to Mailman 3. In most of the mailing lists we have configured "max_days_to_hold" to 2. It was working fine in Mailman 2. However, it is not working in Mailman 3. Some info about my setup: I run mailman3 in an virtual environment with postgresql-Server (all in recent versions) - operating system Ubuntu 24.04-LTS. My aim is to provide one high-level script for the daily task of list creation. - list creation via command-line script with two/three parameters like: ./create-list --listname myfirst.list(a)lists.example.org --admin-email admin-user(a)example.org [--admin-name "Peter Rabbit"] The create-list script itself should be a bash- or perl-script (I am not very familiar with python - SORRY ;-) ) I would like the scripts to trigger some curl-calls on the mailman server (from outside the mailman shell and even from outside the virtual environment) Reading the RestAPI documentation here: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/… several questions arise: 1) Can I succeed with this plan? (Are curl-calls sufficient? How well does DMARC mitigation work nowadays?

Specifically the kind where all list emails come from the the same address, with the sender in Reply-To? It seems like this /should/ be the way it works. Isn't that what Reply-To is for? Do some email clients still mess it up? If they do, wouldn't it make sense to just send them a bounce notice and tell them to clean up their act? Context: considering moving to a paid email service like Mailgun or Twilio and having random unverified email addresses in the From: header seems to be a nonstarter for them, which makes sense.

The server is set to UTC and the date command shows it has the correct date and time. And I received the message ---- 25 September at 20:57 UTC But the message is shown (incorrectly) in the archive as having been posted on 26 September at 8:57 a.m. (out by +12 hours) It should be shown as 25 September 8:57 p.m. Any pointers on where I can adjust/correct this date/time setting for future posts? Hi everybody, as per subject, I'm getting this error in the hyperkitty log when mailman daemon tries to archive a mail. I've setup the hyperkitty.cfg file with api_key = MAILMAN_ARCHIVER_KEY in settings_local.py but still nothing. I've seen here and in GitLab issues some errors concerning a wrong api key but here it says that it wasn't sent at all. All packages installed via pip install + latest .zip release, including mailman-hyperkitty. Currently running on apache with mod_wsgi_py3 without https. Any clue? All the best, Marco Marinello

After I period of months, I experimented. Now I've realized that "DMARC wrapped message text" must contain some message. Now our messages are wrapped.

Postfix and Rspamd reject all Mailman messages after upgrading to Mailcow 2025-09b

Thanks for looking into this. I'm sorry to admit that I unfortunately mixed up two apparently unrelated issues. The first of these was some problem, where my mailman-installation was unable to send mails to some subscribers. The mails were rejected with SPOOFED_UNAUTH messages - I will not deal with this here. My installation is based on Debian 12 (Bookworm), with dockerized versions of Mailcow and Mailman 3 as described here: https://docs.mailcow.email/third_party/mailman3/third_party-mailman3/ The server is a VM, running on Proxmox. Mailcow and Mailman are on the same VM. It took a little time for me to setup things correctly, but mostly it seemed to work nicely. But a week ago it stopped working - I guess because I upgraded Mailcow to 2025-09b. The problem for me right now is that Rspamd rejects all messages, coming from Mailman. Postfix receives mails coming to the mailing lists, but when Mailman tries to forward the mails to the subscribers, Postfix/Rspamd block all of them. Postfix/Rspamd also block mails sent directly from Mailman, such as Welcome-messages - see an example below. In Mailcow, I have under "Options" added 172.19.199.1/24 as a "Forwarding Host" with no spam filter. I hoped this would make Rspamd happy, but apparently not. All messages, sent directly from Mailcow, pass various on-line tests of SSL, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, and are accepted by other servers (Gmail, Hotmail etc.). All web-interfaces to Mailcow and Mailman work fine. Messages to the various lists are archived, but not sent to the subscribers. HSTS Missing from HTTPS Server

In my configuration, I am using Apache to reverse proxy the requests to a uwsgi. After our security office scanned the server, it was shown that HSTS is missing from the HTTPS server. The instructions say to add some lines to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/. The only file in there is 000-default.conf that holds the configuration, but the VirtualHost is port 80. I am using an F5 to to automatically redirect port 80 to port 443, but it is still showing this vulnerability. My question is, how can enable the Virtual Host for 443 on the server? Or can that configuration be located somewhere else? Or can I just create a new Virtual Host with the added configuration for mailman? Thanks, Joe Koral

Hi, I have setup in Debian Trixie mailman3-full and came that far, that I have created a mailing list. I can sent emails to the members. However when I send from an email which is non-member the message is held. Has anyone experienced recent issues with Mailman3 not being able to send to gmail and yahoo e-mail addresses. I am trying to figure out if Google has our server blocked or not. When I send a manual e-mail from the server, the my yahoo e-mail gets delivered, but the gmail one does not. How about a feature to include "HTML" in the current Hyperkitty choices of (Text or Markdown) rendering? A sanitizer must be used to prevent malicious attacks. https://github.com/messense/nh3 . lxml is another package that processes html. A sanitizer would be helpful for more aspects. Permit a limited set of markdown so that messages still appear professional. Gitlab/Github don't allow arbitrary fonts or font sizes, right? Mostly remove these tags. A way that code blocks could be presented: determine an established list of known codeblock styles. Configure the sanitizer to permit this range of fonts or styling elements. By allowing them through the filter, a code styling is rendered. (It is permitted/allowed to be rendered.) Even better, when the sanitizer recognizes the fonts, it replaces them with an "official" set of codeblock fonts. Otherwise, if other font tags are entirely removed, if they are missing, the email client or web ui will decide the font selection, and it will appear "standard". In order for both email clients and Hyperkitty to view the same result, the sanitizer should ideally be applied to outgoing emails as well as rendering in the UI. That means this feature would affect more than just Hyperkitty. (i.e. mailman-core). Although, that could be implemented as a separate step, until which time emails would get a full range of HTML, without sanitizing. In this scheme, ensure outgoing emails are multi-part MIME with plain text and html versions. Some of our users are really in favor of more formatting. Others prefer plain text. Those who prefer plain text have various arguments that HTML messages will be rendered badly, and won't be legible. Questions: 1. Would "multi-part MIME with plain text and html versions both" solve the problem for users who prefer plain text? 2. What percentage of email clients that support HTML formatting when sending will also include a plain text rendering of the same content in the outgoing message? 3. Is it usually the responsibility of a receiving mail client to be able to convert HTML to plain text if the user requests it? 4. When mailman-core receives and then sends out a message, can it receive HTML, generate a plain-text version, and then send both? Thoughts?

I did upgrade one of my mailman3 server after Abhilasj announcement: "I am pleased to announce several new releases for GNU Mailman project. 1. Hi all, i tried to install Mailman3 according to https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#virtualenv-inst…. I’m using Mariadb instead of PostgreSQL, but that is no problem until now. Where i fail: I have to make an entry var_dir: /opt/mailman/mm/var in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg. But there is no directory /opt/mailman/mm, and there are no subdirectories. No $var_dir, no postfix_lmtp, no postfix_transports. Where do i get those files from? TIA QNo

Hi there, I migrated form MM2.1 to MM3.3.10 on Debian Trixie (mariadb backend) -- I know that's a bit unorthodox to ask here for help on a non venv-based installation, but hopefully I'll first gain a bit of insight of MM3 in order to formulate a more precise request to Debian maintainers. ## Issue #1. A newly invited (from Postorius mass subscription page) and confirmed user doesn't get any password in their invitation/welcome e-mail. I guess that's because MM3 allows a user to subscribe without having an account, right? Else, there's a problem. ## Issue #2 Anyway, if that new user asks for a password reset on Postorius they get "Server error An error occurred while processing your request." Subscription Request asking for Confirmation instead of Moderation

We have a list where the Subscription Policy (Settings -> Member Policy -> Subscription Policy) is set to "Moderate" and when I send a message to LISTNAME-join(a)example.com<mailto:LISTNAME-join@example.com> (not the real domain, obviously) everything works as expected and the user shows up in the Pending Approval list. We have a Drupal website that allows users to submit a form that, among other things, sends a subscription request to our Mailman3 'join' address. When that happens, however, instead of going to the Pending Approval list, the name is shows on the Pending Confirmation page. We don't send a Welcome message so as far as I can tell, they do not get an email asking them to confirm their email address. Two questions: 1. Are there particular headers that are causing the email to go to the Confirmation page instead of the Approval page? Or are there particular headers we can add that will help with this? 2. Is there any way for us to move an address from the Confirmation Pending page to confirmed on the backend (preferably through the web interface, but on the server itself, if necessary)? After some (sorry for bothering you) questions here, I was able to set up a mailman3 system which I regard as perfect for my use. Perhaps, you had similar problems with your installation, especially when coming from mailman2 and, like me, from majordomo...... I collected a lot of information which was presented in this mailling list archive here and also answers of my questions (thanks Mark and others) News: https://github.com/Wikinaut/mailman3-tools has all of these tools. README says: Scripts for maintenance or setting-up of modern mailman3 instances set preferences for all users list held messages delete held messages older n days My setting is strictly as described in the documentation: mailman3 + postorius/hyperkitty are installed via pip in an (venv) /opt/mailman/ My user scripts and a huge mailing list generator (not published here) are in a directory apart from that: user maillistgen home directory /home/maillistgen user maillistgen has some sudo rights set uo in /etc/sudoers a wrapper script is /home/maillistgen/run_mailman.sh which sets the correct path for Python, mailman3 and the (venv). Why are moderation mails sent to list moderator (if there are any) _and_ then also to the list owner?

Dear all, I am quity puzzled to receive a bunch of mails which are moderators works - I just set up one person as a list moderator - but I do receive the moderation request as well. How can this be stopped? I just tested the behaviour and I can't see any switch in the list settings (at the moment) to avoid sending moderations to the owner for such lists, where moderator(s) are defined. A Bug?

In my list test I have my address1 as member (only this one member). I definitely send a mail from my address2[sic] to ml test. The list settings are: 1. accept mails from members (address2 is not a member) 2. discard mails from non-members (address2 is not a member of ml test) When sending from address2, my mail is accepted. When I, for sake of completeness switch 1. to moderate mails from member[sic], my mail from address2 gets moderated. Please explain. It looks like a bug. I double-checked the field "accept from non-members" to be empty, yes, is empty, where I otherwise add all members by adding the internal ml whitelist in form of the entry @whitelist@mydomain.com .

particular list member seems unmanageable from CLI

We have a list member that got disabled due to bounces, but that should be fixed after we implemented DMARC and SPF. So as I don't know how to access the disabled status from the CLI (we have no GUI), I tried to delete and re-subscribe them. But although they are listed as a member, they cannot be deleted: # sudo -u list mailman members list(a)domain.tld | grep "$x" M... <M....@web...> # sudo -u list mailman delmembers -m "$x" -l list(a)domain.tld Member not subscribed (skipping): M... <M....@web...> How can I fix this from the command line? Either by restoring their "disabled" status, or deleting and re-subscribing them?

Hi, I'm trying to set up Mailman 3 on a RHEL9 (unfortunately Debian/Ubuntu aren't options) and have been making some progress, but I'm having trouble getting Xapian to work. I first tried to install it using Method 1 (https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#set-up-xapian) however, xapian_wheel_builder.sh seems to just exit right as it starts "preparing xapian wheel...". I ended up installing Xapian 1.4.29 from source and symlinking xapian in the venv as per Method 2. When trying to search the archives the error below is generated. The superuser account uses my address - odhiambo at gmail dot com.I am also the listowner for most lists. I tried unsuccessfully to create an account on Postorious using the same email address. I kept getting sent links to verify the account, over and over. Hello, I'm trying to get mailman3 working on Ubuntu. I'm following these instructions: https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#setup-virtualenv I've gotten to the point where I can successfully su - to the mailman3 user, and manually start the mailman3 process with the startup command. However, when I follow the systemctl startup scripts as per the instructions at the URL above, it get stuck in the startup ... forever Starting from the command line works great! Hello, I know this question comes up here periodically, but I am having some trouble performing a data migration from an older version of mailman3 to a more recent one. We have a legacy environment with: mailman3.2.2 postorius 1.2.4 hyperkitty 1.2.2 there are two sqlite3 dbs for mailman core and mailman web. I've staged a new environment using the docker-mailman project with the following: mailman3.3.9 postorius 1.3.10 hyperkitty 1.3.8 there is a single postgres db here for both core and web. I've tried migration a few different ways, using pgloader, and also with some manual python scripts. Data is definitely not my forte, but I am struggling to get a working instance. I am running into several issues such as foreignkeyviolations, datatype mismatches, unique PK errors, etc.. Does anyone out there have a prescriptive process for this migration, or a suggestion for workflow/tooling that has worked in a similar upgrade process? Thanks! -Peter

Hello I'm running Debian 12 with the latest version and installed mailman3 via apt install-mailman3-full. Everything works, I'm using MySQL as the database. There's something strange, and I can't find a source/solution. When I first access the website domain.nl/mailman3, it's redirected to domain.nl/mailman/postorius/lists/, resulting in a 404 error (3 after mailman is missing). When I accessed it a second time with the same link (domain.nl/mailman3), I was redirected to domain.nl/mailman3/postorius/lists and the welcome page appeared. This is strange... I tested it on a mobile device with Chrome and Firefox, and on a desktop with Chrome and Edge. All the results were the same. Is there a specific file to look add? Regards, Peter

I've been playing with the voting system on a couple of lists (this one included). There are some weird behaviours I've noticed: * votes are frequently not immediately reflected - a page reload is required * some votes display as: 0 0 You dislike it (cancel) Here we see I've voted on a message, but the counts are still zero up and zero down. I just down-voted one of my posts as a test, and nothing changed in the page to reflect the vote. Often it takes multiple clicks, sometimes a page reload. I recently followed the instructions here https://github.com/g4rf/dockerized-mailcow-mailman, and was able to create a new Mailman 3, Debian-based installation. I then followed the instructions here https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html in order to migrate from my old, Centos-based installation, to the new, Debian-based installation. It seemed to work well, but unfortunately a problem showed up. My post here is merely about the information output when running mailman addmembers/syncmembers where I discovered strange looking lines. I noticed that addmember and syncmember output looks like [ADD] =?utf-8?q?John_=28Foo=29_Doe_=5Bcomment1=5D_=5Bcomment2=5D?= <john.foo.doe(a)example.com> whereas the entries in the Web-GUI look fine. I triple-checked the textfile from which the names stem from, yes, the file is UTF8. Is this behaviour of addmember/syncmember command output commonly known - or is this a small cosmetic bug? PS. At some moment I had, probably from my test and legay data file, also these codings in about fifty entries of my users lists, but deleted that users with a small script, so that user list is now clean. My post here is merely about the information output when running mailman addmembers/syncmembers.

clearing pending db

I have an admittedly out-of-date installation of Mailman 3.3 (3.3.2 Tom Sawyer) but it's been working without issues for a long time, so I haven't had much incentive to bring it up to date. Sorry! A couple of my larger mailing lists (around 500 members) are currently very slow when making changes through the UI (maybe that's my raison-to-update). They also both have very large lists of members "pending confirmation." My suspicion is that the large pending list is slowing down other operations. But pendingdb.evict() doesn't seem to clear the list. @Mark & Stephen, now, where here everything appears to run smoothly on a new server, I want to change the testmail.domain (domain1) settings to mail.domain (domain2) settings. It would be a great help, if this can be done by python script respectively a mailman3 shell script. Is there any on your desk, or can you help me? I already defined in mailman/admin (django admin) that new target domain. I guess, at the end, there might also be a very changes in mailman.cfg and settings.py necessary.

Main daemon process sticks around after forking

Hello, I'm running a (rather large) mailman3 instance on Debian 13 (trixie) using the distribution packages. To manage the mailman3 daemon, the package installs this systemd service unit: https://sources.debian.org/src/mailman3/3.3.10-2/debian/mailman3.service/ It has been working fine until recently: after a reboot, we noticed the mailman3 unit consistently failing to start due to a timeout error. I figured out that the timeout was related to the service unit type (Type=forking) and the fact that the main/parent process was forking subprocesses (and running normally), writing a PID file, but it wasn't exiting, so systemd identifies this as an error and aborts the service. Since switching to Type=simple, it has been working fine. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen such behavior and how I could troubleshoot it. Thanks! -- Jérôme

I use the following REST-API sequence (excerpt:) to create a list but want to use the much quicker command line. However, only a few [OPTIONS] can be set via command line. Why? My wish is to have all options available in the command line of mailman? Held messages not delivered after approval

Hi all, I'm running into an issue with Mailman 3. Mails sent to a list are being held due to moderation settings — which is expected — but after approving them, they are not delivered to list members. The message does not end up in the shunt queue, and nothing is delivered. In mailman2, it was quite handy to place "@whitelist" into the field sender/accept_these_nonmembers, when such a file has been set up. How can I (per list or programmatically) define the ~400 e-mail senders to be allowed to send to my about 30 lists? Some member preferences - such as hide_address - cannot be set with the [OPTIONS] in the command line. I suggest to modify the code so that all member preferences can be set via the command line. What do you think? This is how I currently patch (some) member preferences (hide_address is a variable here) in a python script, but this takes a lot of time, depending on the number of users.... Hello, I have a venv installation of: mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web I just did a pip install -U --upgrade-strategy eager When running mailman-web runjobs -l I get the following Warning: System check identified some issues: WARNINGS: ?: settings.ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD is deprecated, use: settings.ACCOUNT_LOGIN_METHODS = {'email', 'username'} I guess this is from allauth (version django-allauth-65.4.1). Changing ACCOUNT_AUTHENTICATION_METHOD to ACCOUNT_LOGIN_METHODS in /etc/mailman3/settings.py is not enough. Advice on how to set announcement only lists?

Here's the basics of what I'm trying to set up: The Web UI is not available. CLI tools are being used for configuration and ongoing maintenance functions. The server instance is ephemeral, but has persistent storage for postfix / mailman configuration. There are a series of notification lists list-0000(a)example.com, list-0001(a)example.com, etc. Users can subscribe / unsubscribe via email. A list-all(a)example.com list can be used to send posts to all lists (this is rare). A siteadmin(a)example.com email address is the only sender allowed to post to any list. A list-admin(a)example.com list is defined. This list should be copied on all posts that are sent to any of the notification lists. The admin list membership is maintained via CLI tools by list admins Below are a couple of ideas I've played around with, but haven't gotten a good solution. Suggestions would be welcome. I've had a little experience with the CLI tools, but I'm not having luck with trying to add non-members. Idea 1 Have list-all(a)example.com be an umbrella list with all notifications lists as members. list-admin(a)example.com is added to all lists as a member siteadmin(a)example.com is added to all notification lists as a member with moderation_action = Action.defer to allow sending posts. ues-all(a)example.com is added to all notification lists as a member with moderation_action = Action.defer to allow "nested" sending to members of the list-all list. There seem to be issues with having the senders as members of the list. Having them as non-members might be a solution, but I haven't yet figured out how to add non-members via CLI. Idea 2 Use cron with CLI tools to extract all notification list members and update (mailman syncmembers) the list-all membership. Use script to add all list-admin users to each notification list. Update all notification lists when the list-admin membership changes. I saw that some python packages are outdated an tried this which install all outdated packages in a row: pip list --outdated --format=json | jq '.[].name' | xargs -n1 pip install -U One outdated package was django and this part happened: ------------------------------- vDownloading Django-5.1.4-py3-none-any.whl (8.3 MB) Installing collected packages: Django Attempting uninstall: Django Found existing installation: Django 4.2.16 Uninstalling Django-4.2.16: Successfully uninstalled Django-4.2.16 ERROR: pip's dependency resolver does not currently take into account all the packages that are installed. This behaviour is the source of the following dependency conflicts. hyperkitty 1.3.12 requires django<5.1,>=4.2, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. mailman-web 0.0.9 requires django<4.3,>=4.0, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. postorius 1.3.13 requires django<5.1,>=4.2, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. django-mailman3 1.3.15 requires django<5.1,>=4.2, but you have django 5.1.4 which is incompatible. Successfully installed Django-5.1.4 ------------------------------- So I made a roll back. Missing Archived emails - Hyperkitty - CERT Issue

Looks like "hyperkitty" stopped archiving right after the CERT for the mailman3 website expired, How can I make the missing archives visible on the website? I see there "*pck" files in the/opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/hyperkitty/spool/ directory. PGP - S/MIME signed messages

Hi * we are receiving a few PGP-signed posts as a S/MIME attachment. Some final recipients check these, and as mailman3 does not munge them - the original mail is signed, not mailman3's final posts - those get rejected. Does anyone have a idea how to handle this elegantly? Thank you Peter

I have recently migrated my lists from an old mailman2 server to a new mailman3 server. The new server is named listservnew and the old server is called lists. Everything is working on the new server using the new name, but after changing the DNS of lists to point to the new server, I am getting Relay Access Denied. We are running this through an F5 and the RCPT from unknown is the F5 IP address. When I add that IP to the main.cf under mynetworks, I get a different error. Enforcing SSO and subscription options

Contrary to the messages I found in the archive, rather trying to delete or remove the social login portion of the sign in page, I'm looking to see if there's any way to isolate the third-party login section and prevent local account sign in and sign up. This way, we can ensure that the people within our organization are using a stronger auth method that prioritizes MFA, rather than just username/password. To do this, our plan is to block signups using "ACCOUNT_ADAPTER = 'django_mailman3.views.user_adapter.DisableSignupAdapter'" and to remove the portions of the login template such that the username/password/forgot password fields are removed, leaving just the button to our SSO instance. I'm anticipating that this should be sufficient to block username/password sign ins, and is resistant to page manipulation due to CSRF tokens, but I wanted to ask to see if there was a better way, like an official configuration (which I have not found yet). I did see that there is the SOCALACCOUNT_ONLY option, as provided by allauth (https://docs.allauth.org/en/latest/socialaccount/configuration.html) but that broke any attempt to display the sign in page, and I'm assuming is not supported with the current version of MM3. Is my plan to modify the templates viable? Additionally, because external users would not have access to their own dashboards within the web UI, and since we are planning on disabling anonymous subscriptions with "SHOW_ANONYMOUS_SUBSCRIBE_FORM=False", the only two viable ways to subscribe to a list for them would be: 1) Send a request directly to the list owner or a superadmin to subscribe/unsubscribe the address 2) Allow email commands to subcribe/unsubscribe users (i.e. $LISTNAME-join@$DOMAIN) Given the discussions on disabling the anonymous subscription form, are the email commands a less spam-susceptible solution or are they just as vulnerable as the form? Hi everyone, Using Mailman 3 with Affinity web interface and we want to stop our members from sending to cc: or bcc: We've found the Header Filter and cc and bcc appear in it. Tried to configure it to "hold for moderation," but it hasn't worked. Partly because we don't understand what to put in the Pattern input box. I put in cc: because it requires something. Mailman appears to send an email to a closed list, from a member who was removed from that list

My project is doing testing of our mailing lists and came across what appears to be a bug. I believe it's not but she insists that it is. So before I do a bunch of research I wanted to post my steps to reproduce and ask for input. I'm including the full (redacted) mailing list config at the bottom of this post for reference. * I have a closed mailing list, acme-closed(a)foo.com * That mailing list has multiple subscribers, including user-1. I confirmed this by shelling into our server and running `mailman members acme-closed(a)foo.com --role=any` on the OS command line. This showed all of the subscribers, including user-1. * I sent an mail FROM user-1 TO acme-closed, and it was received. And by that I mean I received an email TO acme-closed, FROM user-1. I also received the same email emails sent to the other subscribers since I use a catch all address for local testing. * In our system I closed user-1's account (which removes that user from the mailing list). I confirmed this by running the `mailman members` command and noting that user-1 was no longer a subscriber. * I sent another mail FROM user-1 TO acme-closed, and received two emails. One showed what appears to be a successful send to the mailing list. It showed acme-closed as the TO address, and user-1 as the sender. But I also received a second email TO user-1 FROM acme-closed whose body reads "Your message to the Acme-closed mailing-list was rejected for the following reasons: The message is not from a list member. The original message as received by Mailman is attached." So my PM is insistent that the first email is proof that there's a bug. "No e-mail sent from an e-mail address for a closed account should be sent to the mailing list." I on the other hand am arguing that the second email is proof that the email _wasn't_ actually sent to the list, and was instead a sort of bounceback to the user, However it's tough to argue with her logic because I agree the first email seems to have been incorrectly sent. Hi there, we have just started with internal tests around Mailman3 before we want to use it productively. Our instance runs on a virtualised Debian server. We have now started to work with the templates and created a new template ‘list:user:action:subscribe.txt’ under /var/lib/mailman3/templates/site/de. Unfortunately, we can't find out how to customise the subject of the email. Can anyone help us here? Regards Johannes

I forgot to include the mailing list in a reply to Stephen and I wantied to follow up here in case what I learned is helpful to others. One of the things Stephen suggested was that postfix was filtering the headers. That was true in my case. The configuration code I inherited had the following lines in /etc/postfix/header_checks /^List-Unsubscribe:/ IGNORE /^List-Subscribe:/ IGNORE > How are you capturing mail at postfix? For capturing the email at postifx I used the following steps I found on another website to defer SMTP sending so I could look at emails while they were "in process" by postfix. postconf -e defer_transports=smtp; postfix reload # send the email to the server mailq # Use ID from mailq to examine the email using postcat postcat -vq C23D82B60024 # Re-enable SMTP sending postconf -e defer_transports=; postfix reload; postfix flush As for the question about debugging in rfc-2369.py, I did have additional log.debug calls in the "process" method, but was not seeing anything from them. Perhaps they were not getting called as Stephen suggested. Stephen also mentioned in a private email to me about RFC 8058 "One-Click Leave" which is intended to make it easier for folks to unsubscribe from lists. We don't have an implementation in Mailman 3 yet, but it looks like a reasonable protocol (ie, not that easy to abuse, though not impossible). New Lists Appear in HyperKitty Archives, But No Mail Data is Shown

Hello, I have been troubleshooting an issue with our Mailman 3 archives. I have made a key observation that has helped narrow down the problem. While a newly created list appears in the HyperKitty archives, no email data is shown inside that list. *Problem:* When I create a new mailing list in Mailman Core and then visit the HyperKitty archives, the list is correctly displayed. However, when I send an email to that list, no mail data (messages) are shown inside it. The message count for the list remains at zero in the archives UI. *Expected Behavior:* I expect that when a new list is created, it should appear in the archives, and any emails sent to it should also be correctly displayed within that list. *System Environment:* - *Mailman Version:* Mailman 3.x - *Archiver:* HyperKitty - *Web Interface:* Postorius - *Database:* PostgreSQL - *Setup:* Mailman Core (/opt/mailman/venv) and the web components (venv_hk) are running in separate virtual environments on the same server. *Troubleshooting Steps Taken:* 1. *List Synchronization:* Creating a new list in Mailman Core immediately makes it visible in the HyperKitty archives, which confirms that the mailmanweb service is correctly communicating with the hyperkitty_mailinglist table. 2. *Email Injection Test:* I used the mailman shell to inject a test email directly into a list. Displaying addresses in emails from a Mailman 3 installation

In a list I administer, the From line in an incoming email shows [Poster's Name] via [List Name] <address for posting a reply> . I use Outlook as my client, but at least some other clients behave similarly. However, I have at least one subscriber who uses Mozilla's Thunderbird as his client, and periodically the format changes to something else, most recently to just [List Name <address for posting a reply> . I suspect this occurs from some combination of the way Thunderbird parses the header and the way it populates some kind of address book that makes autofill work, but I'm not sure. Is this a known problem? Is there an easy fix that will be stable? In the past, putting an association in his address book and removing others worked, but it didn't hold and he is frustrated.

Caching problem with templates. GNU Mailman 3.3.10 Python 3.11.2 Postorius Version 1.3.13 Venv installation per docs Hi All, A footer template is created and initially it works as expected. Editing the footer template sees the new content written to the database, In addition to viewing the edited content in the database, the new template can also be viewed in Lynx on localhost at: http://localhost:8000/mailman3/api/templates/list/<IDENTIFIER>/list:member:regular:footer The problem is that the original template is being cached somewhere and the old footer persists in new emails. In trying to get the edited footer to show in the emails I've restarted mailman3/mailmanweb, rebooted the server - but no joy. Any advice on how to flush the cache or hammer this gremlin greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

redirecting -bounces replies

Greetings, Is it possible to redirect the -bounces alias of a specific list so that it also goes to a person, in addition to the normal bounces processing for that list? In Mailman2, I know that I could do that by modifying the aliases table. I've been poking around in Mailman3, but haven't managed to figure out which container I need to be looking at. And rather than keep spinning, I figured that I'd ask the hive mind, since I'm sure one of you can quickly point me to the correct location. Change the default value for the General Archive Policy

Dear list, currently, when I create a new mailing list with MM3 the value for "Archive policy" is always set to "Public archives". I'd like to change the default value for "Archive policy" to "Do not archive this list". How can I do this? In Debian 12 I find in </usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/postorius/forms/list_forms.py>: mlist_properties = ['archivers'] archive_policy_choices = ( ('public', _('Public archives')), ('private', _('Private archives')), ('never', _('Do not archive this list')), ) archive_rendering_mode_choices = ( ('text', _('Plain text')), ('markdown', _('Markdown text')), ) archive_policy = forms.ChoiceField( choices=archive_policy_choices, widget=forms.RadioSelect, label=_('Archive policy'), help_text=_('Policy for archiving messages for this list'), ) but have no idea how to change the settings here. Creating users via RestAPI / User-Management - a bunch of questions

Dear Mark and companions, somehow I can not cope with the user management... (I am running a venv-installation, latest stable versions) I read this manual: https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/… and played with the RestAPI calls... I know about the fine grained differences between user and member, admin/owner, superuser... and about the two user databases in PostgreSQL and Django-Framework. What I stumble upon is the RestAPI calls to create a "working" user (with the ability to login via WebUI). When I follow the manual (from the url above) I create a user (including password) that appears in the PostgreSQL database. (And this user is visible on the User-URL (https://example.com/mailman3/users)) Even when I (via WebUI) set the user as "approved" this user is not able to log in... I assume this restriction is in accordance to the fact that there is not equivalent Django user. (There was a mail in the archive of the MM3 user group...stating that one has to use the Django RestAPI to create the appropriate user) When I create the user using the WebUI (https://example.com/accounts/signup/?next=/mailman3/lists/) the new user is created in the right (complete) way...appearing in the PostgreSQL database and as a user in Django. How is this sync between the two databases realized? (The Django user also has the correct status (no staff status / no superuser status / just active status) how is this realized?) As I am not very familiar with python programming (I know Perl/Java/C++ and have an (maybe outdated) concept of OOP), is there a quick way to implement this kind of sync by copying the register logic from mailman's python action script for registering? Other questions: Will there be a create_admin_user-script that is callable via CLI (like createsuperuser or create_list)? (This script ought create a user in PostgreSQL and as Django user) How will a social account provider (like oidc) linkage (in Django) fit in this concept? Will oidc-accounts be copied to the Django's user database (or PostgreSQL db) or is it an on-the-fly check against the oidc-provider? (I assume second option) What are the status-flags (staff status/superuser status/active status) of the linked oidc-accounts? (Can I specify the status flags?) A conceptual thought: When "user1" (with email user1(a)example.com) is known to django via oidc linkage and I create "user1" (also with email user1(a)example.com) via RestAPI calls (following the url https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/rest/docs/…) do I have a "complete" user then? I mean a user who is able to login and who can be assigned to a list as admin (e.g.) (In this case I would not have to care about the Django user database... ;-)) Thank you for some clarifying hints... :-) Chris

two signatures on sent mail?

Hi, I am a very non-savvy mailman list user. I am trying to set up a list via cPanel but when I send emails there are two signatures. One is my usual signature and the other, below, is appended by Mailman and includes an http link to a non-existent page on my website. How do I strip the auto signature, just leaving my own? I use Mailman via cPanel on two separate hosting accounts. One works fine and this new one attaches the list address. I can't see what I did differently with the first! any help gratefully received Kate

footer template priority

It seems templates can be configured in the filesystem or via postorius. When I place a footer template in the filesystem it worked fine. Then without adjusting any configuration, without removing that, I tried to use the postorius control panel to add a footer template, which ends up in the database, both the core and web databases. But emails stop getting sent out. Emails were posted into Hyperkitty, but not mailed out via postfix. Whatever system logs I have access to, I have checked. There are no apparent errors anyplace. Perhaps I didn't look in the right places. The problematic email arrives, is posted to Hyperkitty, but isn't emailed out to subscribers. As if the template broke something. I remove the template from the postorius UI. Those queued emails are instantly sent! The template said "test content". No variables. I checked on the server for "queued emails" and did not find those either, in postfix or mailman. Mysterious. The phenomenon is repeatable on this server. Add a footer template, emails stop.
