I noticed that Django 4.2 is nearing EOL status in April (no specific day in April is given): https://www.djangoproject.com/download/ I also noticed that there's a planned update to add support for 5.2 to mailman-web: https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman-web/-/blob/master/README.rst Is this expected to be released before 4.2 goes EOL? [GSoC 2026] [Feature Proposal] Per-List Backup and Restore Support

*Introduction: * My name is *Sonika Chowdary Gutha*, and I am a *second-year Computer Science undergraduate at BITS Pilani, India*. I recently completed a *6-month internship in Backend Development using Python and Django*, where I gained experience in building backend systems and working with REST APIs.I am also familiar with the *MERN stack and the Flutter framework*, and I have experience developing both web and mobile applications. In addition I have been introduced to the fundamentals of several programming languages, including *Python, C++, and JavaScript*. I am exploring the possibility of implementing a *per-list backup and restore feature* for Mailman. The goal of this feature is to allow list administrators or owners to *export the configuration and membership data of a specific mailing list into a portable backup file and restore it later when needed*. This could be useful in situations such as: - Migrating lists between servers - Recovering from configuration mistakes - Replicating list setups across environments *Implementation:* The following diagram provides a visual representation of the proposed backup and restore workflow <https://excalidraw.com/#json=PhUB9tdMrupMfpx7O6_i6,OLBUtBJjL5_sCR-UokrNHw> .: I plan to implement this feature in two parts. The main backup and restore logic should live in *Mailman Core*, since that is where the actual list configuration and membership data are stored. On the export side, Core would gather this data and write it into a portable backup file. On the restore side, it would read the file, validate its contents, recreate the list if necessary, and restore the saved settings and memberships. On the *Postorius* side, I would implement the user-facing workflow for this feature. This would include an option for list owners or administrators to download a backup file for a specific list, as well as a page where they can upload and restore that file when needed. For the initial version, I plan to keep the feature focused and reliable by covering configuration and membership data first, while leaving more complex areas such as archives or other external components out of scope unless they are explicitly expected. *Questions:* 1. For the first version, what exactly should be included in the per-list backup: only settings and memberships, or also items like templates, ban lists, and member preferences? 2. Should the main export and restore implementation live in Mailman Core, with Postorius mainly responsible for the UI and workflow? 3. Is a *versioned JSON format* the preferred choice for the backup file? 4. Hi, I have a venv installation (mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web) with python 3.11 from the Linux distribution. Since distribution EOL nears, I checked python version in next distribution and it is python 3.13. So my guess is, after distro upgrade, this will stop working. Where to start looking?

So I imported all our mailman2 lists into mailman3, and it appears it didn't preserve passwords. So my wife (who administers 3 lists of her own) tried to use the reset password link (multiple times) but she never gets the email. I don't see any outgoing email to her in mail.log, or any of the mailman logs. I do the exact same thing as her and I get the email. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? -- Paul Tomblin

Accept these non-members

Hi, list! I have an announce only Mailman3 list. When I log into the web interface as an admin user, and go to the specified list, and choose Settings, I find the Message Acceptance tab. There, I find the edit field Accept these non-members. But this field is empty, although I know that some people have permissions and are able to post to this list. How can I find the list of these non-members and add more people or delete someone? I'm running Mailman version 3.3.10, and mailman-web version 4.2.21. Any hints? Thanks, Lars

Additional info/tags on Members

I am managing a few mailing lists which are hosted on a mailman3 instance. None of these are allowing self-subscription, but I have a need to be able to search the membership by association, ie whether they belong to any of a number of named groups Currently there does not seem to be any means for attaching a comment field, tag or such to group members, which would allow keeping such metadata and using it for searching members. (and no, the email addresses of members of one or more groups may not be similar, hence searching by @domain or such will not work) Also, the group-association info should *not* be exposed externally (ie to the member in question or any others), which makes adding the tag/group info as part of the full name impossible. Is there any way to do this in mailman3? If not can this be counted as a feature request: - in mailman3 itself: + add a facility that allows storing additional info to each member , either as a (largish) comment field or an array of tags ++ if tags, it should support managing thousands of them (but each member is likely to only need a few associated) + if tags are used, each list should have its own set of tags (though a means to designate a list to participate in a global tag collection might be useful). - in postorious: + allow modifying the comment field, or adding/removing/modifying one or more tags to each list-member + allow searching a group's membership by tags (or substring in the comment field), ++ following which mass-operations (deletion, setting moderation flags etc) should be possible based on individual selection of the found fields mailman3 really only would need to support storing the additional data for each member, as (at least in my use case) that data is not actually required for mail forwarding. However, it seems to be desirable to store the info in the mailman3 database rather than an external system (to reduce chances that these might get out of sync).

There is currently a merge request at <https://gitlab.com/mailman/django-mailman3/-/merge_requests/345> to hide the "Results per page:" dropdown from some Postorius and HyperKitty pages when the full list of items (lists) is on the page. I.e. when the number of items is <=10 and the "Results per page:" is the default 10, don't display the dropdown. However there is some controversy over whether this should also apply say when the number of items is > 10 but still is on one page. So the question is if we are going to hide the dropdown when "Results per page:" is the default 10 and there are <= 10 items so all are on the page, should we also hide it when say "Results per page:" is 25 and there are 22 items all on the page. Your opinion on this is requested via a reply in this thread. How to upgrade to 3.10

I installed 3.9 with pip last week, but i want to upgrade to 3.10. But pip install -U mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web doesn't upgrade it. The Archiving is still display Email Signature in Plain-Text after I configured filter content: No and convert html to plaintext: No in Alter Messages. And Markdown text in Archiving settings. In addition to that, I also configured HYPERKITTY_RENDER_INLINE_IMAGE = True in settings.py file Where else should take a look into this? My email signature is from CodeTwo. Thanks, Marin

Can't add emails to accept_these_nonmembers

I need to set some nonmembers to a list as these members send message to the list, but don't need to receive any message from the list. I've used list_name.settings['accept_these_nonmembers'].append to add members to the list, but it gets discarded once I run list_name.settings.save().

Debian bug report

So I went to submit a bug report to Debian about the fact that the mailman3-web page drags in nginx for no reason. Turns out that the bug had been reported in 2021 and nobody who worked on it who understood mailman understood apache and nobody who worked on it who understood apache understood mailman[1]. High IO for 8+ hours

First time running runjobs monthly since I installed it a few days ago, and it's been maxing out I/O for the last 8 hours. There doesn't appear to be any logging going on. I am using Xapian, by the way. Is this normal? Is this going to happen every month, or is the first month special? -- Paul Tomblin

Debian upgrade Hyperkitty not archiving

Hi List, I may be in the wrong place so bear with me. I'm working at a volunteer organization with around a dozen mailing lists that were previously on mm2 that have been upgraded to mm3 with the upgrade to debian trixie. Mailman is running and the lists all work ok but i found 1800 mails in the shunt queue. Hyperkitty also shows all the old archives pre 2020 the same as in the django console. When i tried to unshunt the mails they moved to the bad queue. How do i find whats wrong here? message duplication and an NNTP related error

Good day, I have recently installed mailman3 on a Debian trixie system. While I managed to set up most of it (the mailing lists, postorius and also a working gateway to our inn2 news server) I'm seeing a weird duplication of messages, that seems to be related to the error messages posted below. When I switch off gating to nntp the duplication stops. Also only mail messages are duplicated, not the postings on the news server. I've got my server set up correctly (I hope) and on an https connection, and I *think* I've got it set up so mailman-web will only respond on localhost:8000, but I occasionally get a flood of emails like this: > Internal Server Error: /admin/login/ > > DoesNotExist at /admin/login/ > Site matching query does not exist. On the documentation about migration at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html, there are two commands that start `python manage.py hyper kitty_import|update_index_on_list`, but there is no manage.py installed if you install Mailman and Mailman web following the instructions. Instead, I was able to run them using `mailman-web hyperkitty_import|update_index_one_list` instead. What is the correct method for reporting these errors?

I set up a new Mailman site using 3.3.10, and copied over my files from my old mailman site (using 2.1.34). Hi, I have two list servers that I would like customize the web pages for, specifically I need to add some legal information to the footer, and I might want to apply some light branding to the site. I can't find any hints on how to do that, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? If Postorious does not currently allow that outright, it seems I would need to fork mailman/postorious, replace templates like https://gitlab.com/mailman/postorius/-/blob/master/src/postorius/templates/…, and build the package myself. Is this assessment correct? If so, would there be interest in adding a feature to define some blocks that can be overridden more easily, especially during deployment and without having to build custom Python packages? Digestion debugging

I'm having trouble getting digests to work. When I try to manually send one, it does nothing, and then the digest gets deleted (I guess?). I would love it if the documentation explained a bit more how the process works. How are the files gathered? What file can I backup and later restore if I'm debugging it? Also, how are the digest issue and volume numbers work? Is there any way to control that? Since I've been running digests for decades, can I set the volume and issue to what I want so that the numbering continues from where the other installation left off? User received email for the unsubscribe in subject line as 'You have been unsubscribed from the Test1 mailing list' with email address 'test1-bounces@domain'. I'm new to MM3. I just finished install it. I setup a test list with default settings as test1@domain. I added a user to the list via Mass Subscription with Pre confirm check and Pre approved check. Inside the user inbox in GMail account received email from address test1-confirm@domain ( I added this erp_confirm_format: $address to [mta] in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg) with Your confirmation is needed to join the test1@domain mailing list. I replied to the email and I received another email as test1-bounce@domain. I went to my mailing test1@domain. I found a user that I tried to add list in 'Subscription request' under 'Pending Confirmation'. Could you help me to troubleshooting on this? However when I send from an email which is non-member the message is held. Inaccessible User Profile

I have a long time user that cannot access their profile. When I click on users/members then that user as superuser, I get this error. Page not found This page either doesn't exist, or it moved somewhere else. When I click that uers manage button, the page comes up but it says there are no subscriptions. This user was subscribed as of couple of days ago. Can this be fixed via admin functions?

Mailman and Postfix Conflicting Information

I've been going in circles between mailman and postfix trying to get things working. My current condition is that either mailman is putting incoming mail in the bit bucket or postfix is not sending incoming mail to mailman. According to the postfix forum my mailman configuration is messed up but it was auto generated by the installer. Expire non-members

Is there a way to expire and delete (in mailman3 or via cron) non-members? I've been running mailman3 for a couple of weeks now on a few mailing lists, and on my big list specifically I'm seeing lots of spam to the gcfl-join(a)gcfl.net email alias, which creates these non-members, but they never confirm their subscription, so they remain in non-member limbo. Permissions Error on /var/mail/mailman

I am going in circles between postfix issues and mailman. However, before I continue with postfix debugging I want to resolve this first as it may be related for all I know. I'm getting this error in the postfix mail log: 2026-02-01T11:00:10.106626-05:00 dap002 postfix/local[113730]: 01623500076: to=<mailman(a)myhost.localdomain>, orig_to=<mailman>, relay=local, delay=0.16, de lays=0.11/0.01/0/0.04, dsn=5.2.0, status=bounced (cannot update mailbox /var/mail/mailman for user mailman. cannot open file: Permission denied) I'm not sure why mailman is trying to write to that file but it is owned by root:mail. It is obvious why permission is denied to mailman. Is that directory really part of mailman3 and if so what should ownership and permissions be? If not then why is mailman trying to write to it? That path does not appear in any of the files in /etc/mailman3.

Is there an option to "disable" a list temporarily? (feature request?!)

Hello dear Mailman Team, I scanned through the web interface of my mailman instance... and I did not find an option to disable a list temporarily ("sending" and "access to web interface")... This might come in handy when a list is abused for sending spams or when a list owner wants his/her list to be removed... Instead of removing the list instantly I would disable it for three months first... (You never know with users... ;-) ) Preferably I would backup the list (settings and members) and the archives, but as seen in the discussion there is actually no backup mechanism for lists... Is there an option to disable a list (except from resetting passwords and remove/disable mail aliases)? Request for ideas and mentors for Summer of Code 2026

Hi all, The GNU Mailman Project is applying for Google Summer of Code 2026[1]. Our Ideas Page[2] has been updated. We're still open for mentors, of course, and ideas. There's no deadline, but to be most useful it would be helpful to have these suggestions by February 19 when Google announces selected organizations. Summer of Code projects must involve substantial amounts of new code. The effort involved should be 150 to 200 hours (although programmers' skills may be anywhere from "novice" to "10x", so the amount of code can vary more than that!) Projects which are primarily documentation, user interface skinning, or tests are usually ineligible. Please send those to me by email or on this list if you think the idea would be of interest to other Mailman users, or might trigger suggestions for improvement from them. We are also interested in "tiny" tasks which are suitable for demonstrating interest and making the applicant familiar with our review process. If you have some minor annoyance (whether bug or missing feature) that you think might take an experienced Mailman dev an hour, this is a good chance to get some eyes on it. For these it would be most helpful if you file an issue on the relevant project (usually core[3], Postorius[4], or HyperKitty[5]), and mark it "easy" and "GSoC", and "beginner-friendly" if appropriate. (The difference between "easy" and "beginner-friendly" is "easy" means low effort, while "beginner-friendly" means it does not require prior knowledge of Mailman internals or non-stdlib Python modules such as SQLAlchemy, Zope, or Django.) Phantom Email Address in Nonmember List

Have an issue that is more of a puzzle than a problem. No real harm done. So don't spend much time on it if you don't recognize the issue. I am administrator for a small list, radg(a)lists.radg.us, hosted by Mailmanlists.net. They are trying hard to figure it out but so far unsuccessful. Looking at the headers of emails sent from steve(a)stevebrown.us to the list and boomeranged back to me, I see a line “X-MailFrom: bounce+66273f.99dcd9c-radg=lists.radg.us(a)stevebrown.xn--us-02t. I gather that it is designating the return path where a message would be sent if there was a delivery problem. From its position in the header, I suspect it is added as they pass through Mailgun, maybe related to DKIM. I am hoping you might know why that bounce address is recognized by Mailman 3 as a real address for my emails, but not for others, even from my wife’s computer traversing the same path from our home to the Mailman 3 server. The Mailman installation does get and process the post, but also puts the “bounce+,,,” address in its list of nonmembers. Mailmanlists.net hasn’t figured out the behavior. Domain defaults for new lists

Hi Folks, Is there a simple way to set up the defaults for any newly created lists? We've had a few cases recently where in the time between creating a mass-populated list and making it private it's been inundated with spam. I'd like to change the defaults so newly-created lists are private and have private archives, new members are moderated, etc., to give time for the list to be set up completely before announcing it to the world. We just noticed an oddness in a client's system. Someone sent to a members-only list and it 'got past' moderation controls. The list is set to not allow non-members to send to the list, but somehow it got through the default rule of "discard (no notification)" for a non-member and got to the list. The only oddness I can tell is that there was an emoji (unicode) in the subject line but as I understand how Mailman works, this should NOT have impacted anything, as the sender filter bits happen earlier in message processing. Has *anyone* seen any cases like this before? If this is repeatable or a known issue, it deserves a CVE security bug because this is a **severe** problem.

Unadvertised lists accessible even if not signed in

Hi folks, I'm running Mailman3 3.3.10, with postorius and hyperkitty. I want unadvertised lists to be visible only to the people who are subscribed to them and to site administrators. Right now, anyone who has the name of a list can construct a URL to the signup page, even for unadvertised lists. So, I can go to: https://site.name/postorius/lists/test.site.name/ and get to the test list, even if it is unadvertised. I see people scanning URLs like this in the NGINX logs, looking for lists. How can I prevent anyone not logged in, and not a member of an unadvertised list, from seeing it? Peter C

Getting original message headers

We've been seeing some particularly pernicious spammers recently. They're using gmail accounts; I'd like to report them to Google. To do that I need to find the original message headers. By the time the message gets to the archive, or to the mailing list recipients, all the Received: headers seem to have been deleted, leaving only the ones from my list server outwards. Is there a way to access the original incoming emai, before DMARC mitigation etc., has changed the headers? Peter C

Confirmation Email Not Sent

While waiting for the Django problem to be resolved, I am able to make it accept a specific host login to get around the CSRF error. So I am now trying to add a member to my list using the ...join address. I get back a message saying the request is pending. I can also see it on the pending user confirmation page. However, there is nothing showing up on the pending approval page nor is there anything in the mail.log showing an outgoing confirmation email or email to the list admin about a pending approval. There is nothing in the mailq either, Looking through the logs I see nothing helpful. Where is the confirmation email?

I am a happy user running Mailman 3, dockerized, in combination with Mailcow. After a few initial problems, everything is running smoothly. Now I'm considering upgrading from 0.4 to 0.5.1, but I'm not sure about the right procedure. Is it something like this? * Stop Containers: # docker compose down * Change the two occurrences of "0.4" to "0.5.1" in my docker-compose.yaml file * Pull New Images: # docker compose pull * Restart: # docker compose up -d Will there be any need for database migrations? Internal server error instead of web interface

Hi all, https://lists.qno.de/mailman3 shows an internal server error. I followed https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html with MariaDB instead of PostgreSQL. Python 3.13.0 pip 25.3 mailman 3.3.11b mailman-web 0.0.10.dev14?g0997bd postorius 1.3.13 Services mailman3, mailmanweb, apache2, uwsgi up and running. uwsgi listens on [::1]:8000, apache2 is configured accordingly. Ports show up in netstat. No errors show in logs. If /mailman3 was a directory, i would have thought of user permission problems. But not with TCP ports. As :8000 is available, i would have thought that there is a problem with uwsgi. Requests arrive there and are processed: [pid: 3185672|app: 0|req: 10/17] ::1 () {28 vars in 409 bytes} [Mon Nov 3 13:24:05 2025] GET /mailman3/ => generated 5038 bytes in 28 msecs (HTTP/1.0 200) 8 headers in 261 bytes (1 switches on core 0) So uwsgi gets the request and delivers data. The problem seems that apache2 does not get the result, and i cannot find any reason. Any help? TIA QNo

Hi gang, I want to migrate mm21 to mm3, by changing the domain of the list, thus LIST@OLD_dom to LIST@NEW_DOM. I run on debian, with the debian testing version of mm3 installed. Is there an obvious way to do that? One-click unsubscribe?

I'm having a lot of problems with GMail delivery due to lack of "one-click unsubscribe" -- however that is quantified, which is not clear. In particular, there is an issue with the fact that Google ignores dots in email addresses. So I have many (MANY!) subscribers who try to use the List-Unsubscribe header target, but because they are subscribed as "idiotsubscriber(a)gmail.com" rather than "idiot.subscriber(a)gmail.com" (which they have since changed their sender to) they get a reject that they are not subscribed. These people are also far too unobservant to read the footer of every message that reads "You are subscribed as idiotsubscriber(a)gmail.com". Is there any way to provide personalized List-Unsubscribe header links, or have Mailman ignore dots in gmail.com addresses... or... anything? I'm finding reported spam percentages in the Google Postmaster Dashboard exceeding 0.1%, which causes massive delivery blocking to GMail-based subscribers. While I would gladly ban everyone who uses gmail, that sadly accounts for about half of the Internet today and would be incredibly unproductive. Thanks, --Jered

Hi, Is there a way to have more granular permissions in Postorius than either User or Superuser? The user permissions that are configurable under /admin/auth/user/ do not seem to have any effect. We have a helpdesk team that would benefit from being able to access all list pages in the same way as a Superuser, but without the ability to accidentally delete the mail domain for example. Dear all, We have a few mailing lists with a message size limit of 512K. At the same time, these mailing lists are moderated by designated moderators. As configured, posts with a message size greater than 512K are held for moderation. However, even after multiple reminders, some moderators accept these postings. Is there a way to automatically reject all such messages with an appropriate rejection reason? Can we implement a custom rule or a plugin that will help in this case? Regards, Hitachi.

Strange bug I can't reproduce

Hello, I have an application that populates the Reply-To header and sends the e-mail to the list. Under very specific conditions, Mailman may malform this Reply-To header. What I found out is that the second address must match the pattern "Some Name" <a.b0(a)example.com>. The e-mail is properly formatted when it gets into Mailman, but when it is sent out to list members, it gets malformed to Some(a)serverhostname.example.com. Some more info: the first address name is UTF-8 encoded and then "Some Name" wraps into the other line at the middle. I tried to reproduce it like this: Reply-To: =?utf-8?b?QUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQQo=?= < list(a)example.org>, "Some Name" <a.b0(a)example.com> But the problem is not triggered. The problem seems to only present when I send the mail from the application, and so it would be easy to blame the app, but again when I check the queue files, it seems to send the e-mail correctly. It really seems to be a problem with Mailman, I just can't find the exact conditions to trigger it. For privacy reasons I can not share the exact copy of the e-mails on the list, but would it be possible to send it privately so devs could find out where might be the problem? Hi, Hyperkitty provides the possibility to store attachments on the disk by the config parameter HYPERKITTY_ATTACHMENT_FOLDER. Is it possible to export attachments to disk if they are stored in the DB, and have them linked into the archived mail? Removing the footer from mailing list messages

Hello, I'm replacing a Postfix virtual_alias_maps distribution list with a GNU Mailman mailing list because there were many bounced messages, as Postfix doesn't care about properly resending e-mails. I want to kind of restoring the same functionality with Mailman, i.e. to be it as transparent as it can be, neither non-members, nor members should see how the list is implemented by Mailman. Therefore, I want to remove the „XX mailing list ...; To unsubscribe send an e-mail to ...” message from the footer of the e-mails. The problem with this is that list members sometimes reply to e-mails from non-members, and might potentially leave the footer in the quote. What I already tried: define a custom template for list:member:regular:footer. The result was that the mailing list stopped operating altogether, no messages passed through until I deleted this template. After I deleted it, all delayed e-mails were forwarded at once. Too Many From Headers

I am getting mail bounced from yahoo and gmail smtp servers with this message: 554: Message not accepted due to failed RFC compliance. Too many From headers. See https://senders.yahooinc.com/smtp-error-codes#rfc-compliance-failures What would cause mailman to build too many from headers when distributing email? It appears the from address is repeated 5 times in the from field. I'm guessing it is something in my configuration but what and where?

Hi Folks, Is there a way from the Web UI to find all lists with held messages? I'm site owner and admin for a domain; I'd like to see all the held messages for all the lists in that domain, so I can gently encourage moderators to do their jobs .. and to stand in when they're away or otherwise cannot release held messages in a timely manner. To do this I want to see all held messages, and the lists they are meant for. Right now, to see which lists have held messages means clicking on each list name n turn. which can take a long time, even for the couple of dozen lists we have. Peter C

Hi there, we just installed mailman in our internal environment and want to use our own mailserver for sending the mails. Can someone explain which configuration i have to make in my mailman.cfg? I just set smtp_host and smtp_port which seems to work as the mailman server connects to my mailserver but it generates e-mails with blank recipients and headers. Maybe someone can give me a hint? My goal here is to have as little friction as possible for nontechies to join and participate in an email discussion list. So that means - HTML formatted hyperlinks in all emails including the welcome email to subscribe, unsubscribe, see the archives, etc. - no need for a password ever for anything they'd want to do. - A simple click to subscribe, unsubscribe, see the archives. All hyperlinks. I've been playing with the welcome template and it seems maybe this can't do what I am looking for (html formatting). I'm wondering also why it's doing some sort of soft wrap with line breaks which is breaking longer urls in the template.

I'm getting a load of bounce processing for HTML tags. Is there a setting to filter messages through lynx or something to strip out HTML? I'm not sure why a bounce message would be HTML formatted, but ours is not to reason why. Twice today I have received many (50+) emails like the one below. Many at about 1pm, then it stopped now I am getting them again. An Internet search does not bring up anything useful. The domain at the start of 'Request URL' varies as does the name of the list (in this example 'announce(a)leavesden.org') The domain of the list is not necessarily the same as the domain at the start of the URL. I can receive several in a minute. Add an extra option for "Delivery status" for users?

Hello! We have a unique case where we have a user we want to disable for mail receiving, etc. for the reason "Disabled by IT Security Team" but I don't even know if it's possible to add a delivery status that is that custom. I know we have "Disabled" and "Disabled by Owner" but would we be able to add/modify the list to add that option (so that list owners can mark it)? (I say List owners because the ITSec team at a client has 'owner' status by default, without an extra group, but we want to have a dedicated dropdown selection for the ITSec team, even if we just have to duplicate "Disabled by Owner") Thomas

Hi everyone, Using Mailman 3 with Affinity web interface and we want to stop our members from sending to cc: or bcc: We've found the Header Filter and cc and bcc appear in it. Tried to configure it to "hold for moderation," but it hasn't worked. Partly because we don't understand what to put in the Pattern input box. I put in cc: because it requires something. Postfix Hooks and Fetchmail

I'm using fetchmail to feed mailman3 and am having a problem with the postfix hooks. My list name is llllllllll(a)ddddddddd.net. However, fetchmail passes the email to lllllllllll@localhost. So I am getting this error in the mail log: Out: 550 5.1.1 <llllllllll@localhost>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table Is there something I need to add to mailman's recipient table, fetchmail or an alias in postfix?

My django container keeps getting shutdown by oom-killer

Greetings, Ok, I just updated the docker containers that are running my Mailman 3 installation over the weekend. mailman-core is now 3.3.10, with mailman-ngnix at 1.28.0, mailman-postfix at 3.10.5-r0 and mailman-django-uwsgi at "latest". I think I have got everything working normally — messages seem to be processed correctly, and I can access the web pages on the web interface. And I have updated various scripts to use --run-as-root until I can get around to reconfiguring mailman-core to use a non-root user. Anyway, since that time, the EC2 instance that the containers are running on becomes "unreachable", to use AWS's parlance. I can restore functionality by rebooting the instance. According to AWS, this is an application or operating system issue, not their instance. Which means auto-recovery doesn't get activated. This always happens overnight, usually after midnight, though one time it was around 10:40. I don't see any crontab entries that correlate. And the after midnight issues don't always happen at the same time, so it seemed unlikely that it was a crontab job that was causing it I finally looked at the host (rather than the logs of each container) and realized that the oom-killer was killing django-admin. As a temporary workaround, I've limited memory on the mailman-django-uwsgi container to 4 GiB (though, since I just did that this morning, I won't know until after midnight (presumably) if it worked or not), and set the RestartPolicy to always. I'm thinking that this points to a memory leak or some kind? I've installed the mailman3, mailman3-full, mailman3-web, and python3-django-mailman3 packages on Debian trixie. Everything is working - thank you developers! However, I would like to modify how the web pages look (both postorius and hyperkitty). I noticed that the web interface on this server (lists.mailman3.org) looks much nicer than the one showing on my server. For one, on my installed instance, the left and right margins are not set, so content is flush with the edge of the screen. What is the easiest/most maintainable way to add my own css code and/or files to adjust how the web interface is displayed? Is that possible? Thank you! jamie

Cannot issue commands through email

Greetings! I've recently deployed mailman3 for my community but have run into a snag -- none of the emails that issue commands (eg., list1-<join>@domain.com, list2-<unsubscribe>@domain.com, etc. etc.) are going through. They keep bouncing back with an undeliverable message. I can create lists and interact with them otherwise just fine. When I join from the web UI I can post and receive to that list. I've been able to troubleshoot the rest so far on my own, but this has me stymied, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! ~Ken

Greetings, Some of my lists have started displaying this behavior — when you try to access the list page(s), you get a page with this message: Something went wrong Mailman REST API not available. Please restart Mailman core. My mailman-core docker container is running, as are mailman-django-uwsgi, mailman-nginx and mailman-postfix. Restarting the containers doesn't change this behavior. Google suggests restarting mailman core. Or that we might not be using the correct account name, password or port. The weird thing is that it is not all lists. Most of them seem to be fine. Which suggests to me that the issue is with a few lists, but not systemwide, so I think my settings in mailman.cfg, settings.py, settings_local.py are likely correct. For the problem lists, I see this in the log: ERROR 2025-10-29 18:38:56,784 7 postorius Mailman REST API not available ERROR 2025-10-29 18:38:56,790 7 django.request Service Unavailable: /postorius/lists/obfuscated.name.lists.fhcrc.org/ ERROR 2025-10-29 18:38:56,790 7 django.request Service Unavailable: /postorius/lists/obfuscated.name.lists.fhcrc.org/ So, Postorius can't communicate with the API, I guess? I look at settings_local.py: MAILMAN_REST_API_URL = 'http://mailman-core:8001' I believe 8001 is the default, and since I haven't specified one in the [webservice] section of mailman.cfg, I'm assuming 8001 is correct (plus, it works for other lists). There are a few messages waiting for moderator approval — otherwise, I'd probably try just deleting the list and recreating it. Anyone have any suggestions on what else I should look at? Mailman 3 MFA with django-allauth[mfa]

Has anyone successfully got MFA working in Mailman 3 with django-allauth[mfa]? I'm struggling to get it working with the limited documentation I could find. (https://docs.allauth.org/en/dev/mfa/index.html) If signed in as a user, I can browse to /accounts/2fa/ to activate MFA, but I was hoping to make it a mandatory part of the Sign Up process. Is there something that needs to be done with the URLs somewhere? Configuring Web Front End

The next layer of the onion is configuring the web front end. Specifically setting up Django. The documentation seems to make a lot of assumptions about what I know about Django (which is nothing). I cannot find anything about what 'settings.py' should look like for mailman3. It is not even clear where it should go (/opt/mailman/var/etc?). The Django setup documentation is of no help for mailman3. Am I missing something in the wiki?

The recipient address abc-given.name(a)online.de (member of list mylist(a)myserver.de) has currently an out of office responder and mails are returning to my mailman3 system as unrecognized bounce messages. I suspect the "-" in his address to be in conflict with the bounce address hyphen: <mylist-bounces+abc-given.name=online.de(a)myserver.de> Can any of you experts try on their systems, whether this a bug of mailman3 due to the "-" in the address? Notice the repeated use of the word "default" (which is a great word, by the way). This creates confusion: Default action to take when this member posts to the list. List default -- follow the list's default member action. Default Processing -- run additional checks and accept the message. Due to backwards compatibility it may be difficult to change. But if it could be modified, how about: Action to take when this member posts to the list. List default -- follow the list's default member action. Standard Processing -- run additional checks and accept the message. In other words, in the context of message acceptance, the word "default" should have a certain selected meaning. Then make extra effort to choose other words for other actions, as proposed here, "Standard Processing", or something similar.

Using the uwsgi.ini from the virtualenv method documentation, mailmanweb is constantly using 2GB RAM on my server. My database (MariaDB) size is 2GB.
