I would be looking to be able to subscribe people to multiple lists through command line. Mailman 2.1 did have an add_members script we used but I'm not able to use this module in mailman3. Can anyone suggest a script or approach to this issue? Thank you, Tibor

very few moderation capabilities for moderators

Hi all: I need to provide the list moderators a way to change the moderation flag for users from whichever it is (normally "list default processing") to "hold for moderation" and viceversa (to "list default" or to "accept") I understand that it could be done via console script (That's the way I did on mailman2: I made two commands using "withlist", one to hold, moderar.py, and other one to accept, desmoderar.py. I show you below) But I think I'm not the only one that could use as an improvement a way to do this on postorius/web. Before to trying implementing them on mailman3, I beg you to tell me if they could do that on mailman3. mm3mod: command line moderation tool

Because we're not running postorius, and the moderate-by-mail change is not available in the older version of mailman3 we're running, I needed a tool to moderate lists from the command line. I found mailman-tools, but wasn't able to get them working with python3, so I started from scratch. Maybe someone else will find it useful https://git.tethera.net/mm3mod.git/about/ It's a work in progress, but I am running the version from that repo in production. Like any program using the REST interface, in principle this has complete administrator access to your mailman site, so you need to to trust both this code and the users you let run it. I do run it in "kiosk mode" via ssh command="/home/listmod/.local/bin/mm3mod" ssh-rsa blahblah in .ssh/authorized_keys. This is more of a keeping-honest-people-honest kind of thing.

Controlling Mailman3 from the Linux commandline

All, Not versed in Python, I found using the Python gateway to Mailman3 commands rather cumbersome for the few and very simple interactions I have with the shell. So I implemented a set of .bash scripts that I use instead. They all have this from, where the last part is the Mailman shell command (in this case the command for adding members in file $1 to the list $2). #!/bin/bash exec /opt/mailman/mm/venv/bin/mailman -C "/opt/mailman/mm/mailman.cfg" members --addmembers $1 $2 To invoke it: . addMembers.bash <FILE_OF_EMAIL> <listname> I have other scripts for commands such as: List all lists List all members on all lists (with a sort -u) Send an email with a given list's members to a given address Delete members from a list Delete members from all lists Help Count members on a list Note the one that sends the member list to a given email address. It does this: #!/bin/bash exec /opt/mailman/mm/venv/bin/mailman -C "/opt/mailman/mm/mailman.cfg" members $2 |grep -v -e "has no members"|sed -e 's/.*/\L&/'|mailx --subject=$2 $1 This one I use a lot because the system has a bug that does not allow moderators to see the list of members on the list they are supposed to moderate. How to import mailman2 into mailman3 in Docker, getting error with archives.

I know you can't run mailman commands in the docker images and I have to copy the data to an area where he docker images can access it, but in looking that the commands I got the list settings to import docker exec -it mailman-core mailman import21 [REDACTED](a)REDACTED].REDACTED].org /opt/mailman/migration/config.pck *** this worked But having issues importing the archives? do i run this on mailman-core OR mailman-web? Running mailman shell commands in a script

Hello, I understand that the mailman shell is basically interactive. I need to run some actions as adding and deleting users in a Linux shell script, or even from another python program. How does that work? In fact, I miss the commands that were in the bin directory of the old mailman2 installation. Wouldn't it be nice to add them again to mailman3? Cheers, Eggert

Blocking email addresses

In mailman2 there was an option to put the email of rejected posts into the block list. The block list is still there in mailman3, but I have to insert the address manually. Are there any plans to activate this feature again?

Does anyone have a working DKIM/ARC configuration?

I've configured a Mailman 3 server with Postfix and added OpenDKIM to the latter to provide the DKIM headers, and configured Mailman to provide the ARC headers. However, in sending test messages to a mailbox hosted by Microsoft, I'm seeing a header like this: ARC-Authentication-Results: i=2; mx.microsoft.com 1; spf=pass (sender ip is 1.2.3.4) smtp.rcpttodomain=destination.org smtp.mailfrom=mmserver.org; dmarc=bestguesspass action=none header.from=mmserver.org; dkim=test (signature was verified) header.d=mmserver.org; dkim=fail (signature did not verify) header.d=sender.org; arc=fail (47) (I've changed the domains and IP address) Manually sending an email from the server to the same external email address does give me an email with a valid DKIM header: Authentication-Results: spf=pass (sender IP is 1.2.3.4) smtp.mailfrom=mmserver.org; destination.org; dkim=test (signature was verified) header.d=mmserver.org;destination.org; dmarc=bestguesspass action=none header.from=mmserver.org;compauth=pass reason=109 So I'm unclear as to where the problem may lie ... Are the gitlab repositories kept in sync?

Mailman Web has not been updated for wo weeks. Does that mean I can download that Postorius and it will work with the latest mailman core updated in the past day? I expect that most changes don't break interfaces. Is that correct? Brett

External Mail-Server?

Does mailman3 support that directly, or would I have to setup a local MTA which somehow fetches incoming mails from the external inbox and uses the external Mail-Server for delivery? New messages not being archived

I have 2 active lists that are properly mailing out and working, plus an admin testing list that is as well. The list info pane correctly shows the mail volume and the imported archives from the previous 2.1 installation are present for both active lists. None of the 3 lists are generating new entries in the archive, all 3 are set up with default settings except 1 active and admin are set to private. I know that hyperkitty is showing some new content as admin was created in postorius and the list is present in hyperkitty and working in mailman. None of the logs show anything of note, mailmanweb.log has no new entries since it caused a serious issue when I changed the domain, uwsgi-error is the same and uwsgi.log has proper access logs. When trying to add a new thread via the hyperkitty interface I can see the email go through the maillog, I get the email with the entered content and everything else works, it just doesn't add a new thread to the archive. The installation is set up with the default settings from the virtualenv installation guide. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Mailman container images 0.3.12 is now out

Hey Everyone, I have just tagged release 0.3.12 on Github for container images for Mailman 3[1]. This release includes the fix for CVE-2021-40347 that was announced earlier today. For the folks using 0.3 or 0.3.11 release tags, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to this release. This release also bumps the version of Mailman Core to 3.3.4, Mailmanclient to 3.3.3 and Django-mailman3 to 1.3.7. Note that is since the main and v0.3.12 branches are different in many ways, the default documentation[2] and the docker-compose.yaml files in the main branch aren't accurate if you are using the stable release. Please refer to the README[3] at v0.3.12 tag in the Github repo for more accurate docker-compose.yaml and documentation. The project has grown large enough that we need to start versioning the documentation, if someone has experience with versioning docs using Github pages and mkdocs, then I very much need some help here! For those of you who are using the rolling release, it is recommended that you **don't** upgrade to this stable release. The fixes have been pulled into the rolling tags too, so just make sure that you upgrade to the latest published version of rolling release, which as of this writing should be based off on fda837f8d15540e190992c30f7971f50fca54dac commit[4]. This might not be the latest by the time you upgrade if I add a new commit, so look for versions published after 4:00 PM PST 9/5/2021. I am also working on cutting a new release, 0.4.0, which is backwards incompatible with the setup required to talk to web server and MTA (hence the minor version bump!). That should bring the rolling releases and stable releases closer to each other and add improvements around not needing static IPs in the docker network anymore, plus several bug fixes. If someone wants to test the upgrade to 0.4.0 from 0.3 release and is willing to try out the instructions at [5], it would give me some confidence in cutting out the release sooner. The only thing stopping the release of 0.4.0 images is that I haven't verified if the upgrade from 0.3 is documented enough or not. For all the registries listed in README[6], I am still trying to push to Quay (maybe I need to just skip pushing to Quay :-). So, just use the other two to pull the images, Github (ghcr.io) has more generous pull download policy for un-authenticated users though. New vulnerability in Hyperkitty master branch

Hey Everyone, A new vulnerability was reported against Hyperkitty’s git master branch branch which can expose the archives of a private Mailing List through the new Feeds API that was added to Hyperkitty recently to someone who isn't a member or logged-in. Thanks to Ngo Wei Lin for reporting this vulnerability. This bug does not affect any stable released version of Hyperkitty and only affects installations from source (1.3.5b1 version). To differentiate from the vulnerable version, I have bumped the version in master branch to 1.3.5b2, so if you have 1.3.5b1 installed, you should upgrade! The fix for this bug has been committed to master branch[1][2] less than an hour ago as of this writing. If you are using git branches to install Hyperkitty, you can upgrade using the following command: $ pip install --upgrade git+https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty@master I have also triggered a build for Mailman container images[3] with this changes, so if you are using the rolling container images (which are the only affected ones), then you should upgrade to the latest one when the build[1] finishes (approximately in next 30mins). Do note that this version of rolling release of mailman-web image also includes the fix for the vulnerability announced against Postoruis earlier today. You can verify that you have the fixed version of Hyperkitty in the image by running: $ docker run -it --entrypoint bash maxking/mailman-web:rolling bash-5.0# pip list | grep HyperKitty HyperKitty 1.3.5b2 Ensure that you get 1.3.5b2 version. CVE-2021-40347: New security release for Postorius

Everyone, A security vulnerability was reported against Postorius recently which allows any logged-in user to unsubscribe any other member on any other list on same Mailman installation using a specially crafted POST request due to a missing ownership check. This has been assigned CVE-2021-40347. This affects all past versions of Postorius including 1.0.0. Thanks to Kunal Mehta for the security report and a quick patch to fix the vulnerability. I am also attaching a minimal patch that fixes it along with this email, without tests and NEWS so that it applies to older versions of Postorius easily (I have tested the included patch with 1.3.3, 1.3.2 git tags). Upgrading to 1.3.5 release is highly recommended and it mostly includes the fix for this vulnerability (and a small compatibility fix for django-mailman3 1.3.6) so it shouldn’t introduce any other bugs. You can upgrade to this release by running: $ pip install postorius==1.3.5 A full change log is available here[1] as usual and can be downloaded from PyPI[2]. domain owner role

Dear all, recently, I have added one account to a domain as domain owner. I did expect the new owner to see all lists in that domain in Postorius, but he sees no list at all. Is this the way it should be? How can I add administrators able to perform administrative tasks on all lists in Postorius? How to increase maximum size of the message in mailman

Hi Team, I am currently running Mailman 3 with version 3.3.1 and in-built postfix version 2.10.1-6 on RHEL 7.5 with PostgreSQL 11.7 version with default values. I am almost running 2200 lists with 128 GB RAM and 24 Cores on a single VM and on which all the mailman 3 components are running. I have been running this setup in production for the past 2 years and 6 months. I have recently encountered a scenario where a user sent mail with a PPT attachment to one of the lists on the said mailman server. The mail is received by postfix on the mailman server and is handed over to mailman at *0.0.0.0:8024 <http://0.0.0.0:8024>.* But the /var/log/maillog says the below error during the above hand shake. *status=bounced (host 0.0.0.0[0.0.0.0] said: 552 Error: Too much mail data* I have browsed google for understanding and fixing the issue. During which I encountered the information given by Mr. Mark Sapio at https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/…. But I could not fix the issue as it is mentioned the default size limit is 33554432. I request someone to suggest where I can customize the value 33554432 and put a higher value or can be configured without any limit. I have configured message_size_limit as 100MB at postfix level. I would like to configure, in fact, the same at mailman level too. But I don't understand where to edit. I tried editing the variable DATA_SIZE_DEFAULT value in /var/lib/mailman/mailman/.tox/py36-nocov/lib/python3.6/site-packages/aiosmtpd/smtp.py file but unfortunately no luck. So, could someone please help us in this regard ? Question about message bounce stats

When I used Mailgun some time back, it had a feature of, for any specific outgoing mailing, being able to show you stats and other details of which mails were received ok, which bounced, and which were undeliverable, which I found helpful to check every so often. Hi, I had a user complaint that his subscription was disabled. Looking into details, his mail provider sent out lots of auto aways notices marked with Auto-Submitted: auto-replied (vacation) Should we not exclude these as being counted as bounce? Hi, I am in the process to migrate from mailman 2 to mailman 3 and currently I am setting up the new environment and do some tests and play around with the new system. I'd like to have a seperate log for list subscriptions and unsubscriptions. For that reason I added the following section to the mailman-extra.cfg file: [logging.subscribe] path: subscribe.log That created a file called subscribe.log but not everything regarding subscription / unsubscriptions is added to the file. When subscribing and unsubscribing a user via mail only the following line is shown: Aug 27 10:58:31 2021 (28) tmod(a)mm3.example.com: held subscription request from chris(a)example.com Nothing regarding the finished subscription and absolutely nothing regarding the unsubscription performed later. Unwanted E-mail to Maillists Submitted via Postorius Interface

Hi Everyone, I’ve seen a recent uptick in SPAM messages making it into mailing lists. Looking at the raw, it seems that the e-mails are being submitted thru the Postorius/Hyperkitty “Start a New Thread” interface. Is there a way to turn that off? We would want people to only be able to post via e-mail. Part of the problem is that our anti-spam system RSPAMD trusts the mailman-web IP… so it doesn’t scan things originating from there.. ☹ Another uestion: Is there a way to implement captcha, or is there a recommended gate that can be put in the signup process? Apparently bots are finding a way thru the signup process, and then sending messages to the list via the Postorius web interface. There seems to be a Django plugin for it; but it appears the Mailman code would have to be adjusted to implement it. I’m open to any suggestions, including on places to check for misconfiguration. 😊 Thanks. - Matt Alberti

Error on timeout vs retry values

Hi everyone, I have recently setup a new mailman3 service using the venv method. Everything is functionally working however I keep getting an error sent to the mailman email every min which I can not seem to figure out why. /opt/mailman/venv/lib/python3.7/site-packages/django_q/conf.py:142: UserWarning: Retry and timeout are misconfigured. Mailman backend maintenance task

Dear all. My apologies if the answer to this question is obvious, but I am pretty newbie for 3 version, and to be very honest I haven't had enough time yet to have a deep look into the documentation. Our customer is currently using PostGRESQL as backend, and we would like to perform some maintenance tasks, namely running vacuum full, or at least trying to rebuild hyperkitty_email primary key related index. We have been asked on the real impact of putting in place such initiative. Though the latter is related to archiving, I haven't found a way to stop just Hyperkitty or Django related processes other than stopping Mailman's core, hence preventing mails addressed to distribution lists from being delivered, could you please confirm if I am correct? Regarding the former, as far as I have read, the "mappings" lists -> addresses are stored just in the database, so if we run some kind of procedure or task like vacuum which will lock exclusively tables, or want anyway to have the database stopped for a cold backup or whatever, Mailman willl not work, that is, again the mails addressed to the distribution lists will not be delivered. Will you please confirm this point, too? Really wish we had a testing environment to have been able to check this ourselves and not bothering others, but unfortunately we lack it, and we need to provide an answer as soon as possible. I’m testing Mailman3 on Ubuntu 20.04 and installing the packages from the default Ubuntu repo. I’m not sure I’ll perform the install this way once we move to production. I don’t know what group is responsible for keeping the Mainlam3 package in the Ubuntu repository up to date but I’d like to find out how committed that groups is to keeping the package current. We patch often and it would be convenient if the Mailman3 package is kept updated and current. If there is going to be some significant lag time I may decide to install manually when we go to production. Any thoughts on this? — Andy

Error when disabling signup

Dear all, over the last couple of weeks, I have installed and configured mailman3 using the docker containers. It took me some time, but now it works quite well. At last, I wanted to disable the sign-up because only LDAP users should be able to login. Hi everyone. I have a dedicated Ubuntu box that is running mailman3. I have a single email list on it. The subscriber base is about 350 users. There is a good chunk of these users that are aol.com or yahoo.com users. I've been getting complaints from the Yahoo people that mail is delayed at times, or messages that come out of order. Looking at the mailq on the box, I can see there are plenty of emails stuck in the queue. Avoiding non-members to be saved.

Hi all: Yesterday I had a problem with a private list. A spammer sent a mail forging one address that was a non-member (in fact was an "accept this no subscriber mails" from mailman 2.1 import) with very bad intentions and it was distributed. There were no list of "accept this non members" in the Postorius config (but I'm sure that that address was "accepted" in 2.1). To avoid this from any other non member address I deleted ALL non-members. I think it is solved now (deleting all and putting to hold just the non-members addresses that I would want to pass messages on) The fact is that any sender address of mails sent to the list is saved as a "non member", and it make me nervous as it will grow despite it is a legitimate message or not. Anybody knows if there is a per list config to avoid saving all that addresses as non members? o a overall config? I couldn't find anything about this in the config pages (or googling it) Thanks in advance. --

Hello, I have been running Linux mailman2 servers for about 10 years, and sendmail/postfix servers for over 20 years. I have a client who wants to upgrade to Mailman 3 from their current Mailman2 system. I wanted to avoid the disruption of an upgrade, so I implemented a series of test servers with different names (leaving the mailman2 server in production at its historical address) running Ubuntu 18 and Ubuntu 20, using the mailman3 packages (3.1and 3.2 respectively). I sort of got it running with mailman 3.2 on Ubuntu 20, but couldn’t get Hyperkitty archiving to work. Plus the fact that mail bounce handling isn’t implemented prior to mailman 3.3.2, I decided to install the latest mailman version available in a venv environment, using the instructions at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html I followed the instructions carefully using the same paths, and tracked down and fixed errors as each step progressed. I finally set up a WSGI server according to the instructions, searched for and found (fragmentary) instructions for setting up the Apache configuration, started the mailman3 and mailman web services, and now have no errors in the /opt/mailman/web/logs files, the /var/log/apache files, and in syslog. But when I try to connect via the Web, I get the message "Server error An error occurred while processing your request.” in my browser. No other clues. I’m completely stuck, and I need help to conclude this rapidly, the client really needs the new service up and running ASAP. I’m at the limit of my competence. I’ve been learning Python on and off (insufficient available time), and I installed Django and ran the tutorials. I still am woefully unskilled in the subtleties of a complex Python project like Mailman/Posterious/Hyperkitty, and I really need the help of an expert who can log into the server and see for themselves where the problem(s) are, and fix them. What I need is an experienced Python programmer, who has installed, run, and upgraded venv mailman3 installations. Of course, I will pay for this expertise, and charge it to the end client. In other words, I will pay you directly, and then I will worry about getting paid myself later. I am ready to pay €60/h for your skills, paid directly to your bank account, after receipt of your invoice. It shouldn’t be all that much work, since everything has been installed according to instructions, I’m just not a good enough Python programmer to get all the parts to work together correctly. It’s important to note that the end client is an organisation of European political parties, the virtual machine running the Ubuntu 20 server is hosted at OVH in France. Mailman3 stopped working after Upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04

Hey, I have set up mailman3 with mailman3-web on my mailserver and after upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04 my setup stopped working. I can see repeating log entries of mailman trying to reach something within hyperkitty and getting an error. The same constant repeating cycle of log entries is visible in my log files. I have attached my config files as well as the logfiles for mailman3 and mailman-web. As you can see, I'm not really getting many errors, yet within 5 seconds there are almost 2000 lines of log entries where mailman tries to reach something within hyperkitty over and over and over again. One thing I did to create an error message is start up both services, then edit a test list, that I created, in the web interface. remove non members from a list

Hi all: I need to remove all non members from a list. I know I can do it via Postorius, but it has to be done one at a time. (you can delete ALL suscribers but not all non members...) Anyone has a python recipe to do this? I've been searching and googling but I cannot find the way of doing it safely. And via DDBB there are more than one table involved and I'd rather not mess it all... Thanks in advance

Not able to start mailman server

Hi, I am trying to start the mailman server on a mac according to the instructions given on the website as shown - $(py3) git clone git@gitlab.com:mailman/mailman.git $(py3) cd mailman $(py3) python setup.py develop $(py3) mailman start $(py3) cd .. But I run into the following problem - Starting Mailman's master runner Generating MTA alias maps /usr/local/Cellar/python(a)3.9/3.9.5/bin/python3.9: can't open file '/usr/local/opt/python(a)3.9/bin/master': [Errno 2] No such file or directory Can anyone help me out with this? UnpicklingError on mailman lists command

Hi all -- I'm getting the error below when trying to exec the "mailman lists" command. I've turned debugging on within my test mailman.cfg like so... Greetings again! Is there a remote API I can use to manage a list? One of the lists I manage has 1800 or so users, the vast majority of which have never posted, and I need to remove them (preferably not one by one). The list is meant to be actively used, so going forward I want to be able to unsubscribe anyone who hasn't posted in the last year. Both of those would be much more nicely done with a python script on my computer if I had a means to communicate with the mm3 server remotely. Any and all help appreciated! -- ~Ethan~

I am trying to setup mailman3 in docker and have some questions, I can see the finish line :) i hope. I start my images and I can access the web,http://Servername.domain.com/postorius/lists/ and no list are there of course, but How do i sign in? I click the forget link and I have to enter in a email address. I put in the email address I added to the docker-compose.yaml but that does not wrok. I have these setup in the .yaml file. MAILMAN_ADMIN_USER: The username for the admin user to be created by default. MAILMAN_ADMIN_EMAIL: The email for the admin user to be created by default. I found this url http://Servername.domain.com/admin/login However I never set a password and here is no forget button, Basically once I have docker installed, and mailman3 up and no lists are available, How do I setup or/and sign in as admin? Also In docker how can I test sending mail? the command "mailman-web sendtestemail youremailid@domain" from the mailman-web container does not work. How can I make sure my containers can send and receive mail?

Hi folks. Some time ago, I set up mm3 and have been running a bunch of lists on it with great success. I was a long-time mm2 user, and while the differences are significant, I'm glad I made the switch. However, in what seems to have been a moment of insanity in retrospect, I installed mm3 from my OS' package repository. Yeah, I know, that was dumb. Now I'd like to migrate to a new server, and I'd like to install mm3 in the normal way. Is there a way that I can "dump" the configuration from an existing mailman3 server, and "import" it into a new instance? I'd really like to avoid re-doing all of the configuration, etc, as there are quite a few lists and everything is set up pretty much the way I want it. I have been asked on information related to the end of life of support for 3.1 version, and I was wondering whether you could please provide some insights on how the Mailman life cycle is conceived. For instance, are there periodically planned releases, say 1 per year? If so, will you please confirm how long we are to expect the previous versions to be maintained? Hi, Background: I have a painful mailman3 installation based on ubuntu 18.04 packages, a mistake I regret but have to live with until I can finish a fresh install of the latest. Currently running on mailman 3.1.1-9 and python-django-mailman3 version 1.1.0-4 (if that matters). I migrated > 1200 lists from an old mailman2 installation. That brought along all of the footers (naturally), and now I'm trying to get rid of them but failing miserably. I've spent a fair bit of time reading archives of this list, but I'm still stuck. Here's what's configured... In /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- var_dir: /var/lib/mailman3 # Root directory for site-specific template override files. template_dir: $var_dir/templates -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In that directory, list-specific directories like: /var/lib/mailman3/templates/lists/list.mydomain/ and, as an example, en/list_member_digest_footer.txt For the migrated lists, that might have: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ $display_name mailing list -- $listname To unsubscribe send an email to ${short_listname}-leave@${domain} ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Based on what I've read elsewhere, my first attempt was to create an empty file doing 'cp /dev/null list_member_digest_footer.txt' to replace the one installed in migration. That had no effect. As a shot-in-the-dark, I did 'cp /dev/null list:member:regular:footer.txt' to see if that might have some effect. Nope. I suspect that one of the lists I manage is getting a lot of subscribers who don't understand what that particular list is for, and having to answer a question or two would allow me to direct them to better resources. non-members issue with held email

Hi I want to check a issue with a few mailing lists of us. We do run mailman3 on debian with debian package 3.2.1-1 (not yet updated for backup reasons). We created a new mailinglist, added 3 owner and several members. Now we want some email addresses to post to that list but not receive mails from the list. So I added those to the "non-member" area of the mailinglist and checked every non-member to "acceppt at once". But on a test, a email address, which is owner AND non-member, cannot send to mailinglist, always get a "HOLD: ...... The message is not from a list member" The Email address in that HOLD log entry is the same as in the owner/non-member list. Any idea howto check the mailman3 logs for this case? Thank you.
