500 error on Held Messages page

Hello, I searched the list but couldn't find anything specific to the error seeing with held messages for this specific list. See output below from the mailman.log. The problem doesn't seem to be related to the database listarchiver table. Unfortunately, you're asking a bit much for volunteer help. The problem is that Debian uses the FHS layout with the system Python,while we core devs recommend and use a self-contained "virtual environment" with an /opt-style layout. Debian also applies patches that may or may not be backports from more recent versions. We just don't know what's going to go wrong on a distro install. Mailman also has dependencies on several system components (webserver, mailserver, WSGI implementation, SQL database, text indexer) which each come in multiple flavors, but the range of combinations we're familiar with is limited and may not even include the Debian default list. Once you have a working Mailman installation we'll be happy to help you tune it, though. (And you don't need core devs for that anyway, other Mailman site admins who hang out here can often help as well as well as we can.) Sending a message to a subscription applicant when a subscription request is made

Dear Mailman 3 wizards, Our subscription process requires that the applicant answers a few questions and sends them to the list moderator. Not having a template that gets sent on all subscribe requests, I'm using the 'list:admin:action:subscribe' template. This gets sent to the list moderator, who then sends it forward to the applicant. This is rather tedious. I would like the template to be sent directly to the applicant. There is a template, 'list:user:action:subscribe' that almost does this, but it gets sent only if the email address of the applicant is unverified. A good number of our applicants are already on our lists, so they would not get this template if we set the Subscription Policy to 'Confirm, then moderate'. Our Subscription Policy is currently: 'Moderate' for all lists. I figure that three modifications can be used to fix this: a. That we change the lines in the Python program in our installation that send 'list:admin:action:subscribe' to the list admins to instead send the template to the applying subscriber. b. That we change the lines in the Python program in our installation that send 'list:user:action:subscribe' to the subscriber with an unverified address to always do this, even when the incoming address has already been verified. c. That the current 'list:user:action:subscribe' be changed in published Mailman 3 source to 'list:user:action:confirm' and a new template ''list:user:action:subscribe' be set up to be sent when any subscribe request is made. This is more work, of course, so not likely a good thing to hack locally. It could be useful to other users. Any suggestions on how to best and most quickly do the above would be appreciated, starting with (a.) or (b.). Clearly, (a.) and (b.), if we do one of those, are hacks that will need to be applied upon Mailman updates. That's fine by me, as I'm in rush to get this done. I'd welcome pointers as to which file to change and how. Of these two options, which would be the least work? (c.) could be entered as a longer-term enhancement request. 404 on fresh install (Debian11)

Hello, very new to mailman3, I used to manage mailman2 on a Debian 10 server. The server has been upgraded to Debian 11 and mailman2 disappear… I try fresh install of mailman3, prerequisite to data migration, but without success. If some can help, I would be really greatful. Here is my path: - `mailman3-full` install with apt. MySQL config since I have this DBMS - `python3-pymysql` install with apt after seeing errors in logs - Apache2 configuration (other virtual hosts are present) ```apache2 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName newsletter.mydomain.tld Alias /static /var/lib/mailman3/web/static Alias /favicon.ico /var/lib/mailman3/web/static/postorius/img/favicon.ico DocumentRoot /var/lib/mailman3/web/static <Directory "/var/lib/mailman3/web/static"> Require all granted </Directory> ProxyPassMatch ^/static ! I also tried `ProxyPass / unix:/run/mailman3-web/uwsgi.sock|uwsgi://localhost` but also fails with `No protocol handler was valid for the URL / (scheme 'uwsgi')` I am a bit lost with that. NGINX reports 502 after fresh install

Hi All, I'm working my way through the recommended installation in a Python virtual environment. I seem to have the components installed and working but when I try to access the web interface I receive an error 502 from the web server. I'm assuming I've misconfigured something in Nginx. Social signup?

Hi everyone, Is there a way to enable social signup (vs just login for existing users)? I've just implemented social login on my mailman lists, but realised it seems to be only login, and not signup...or at least I couldn't fine specific info to enable social signup. Is social signup something anyone has implemented (and if so how). If not, I suspect there might be a good reason (e.g. privacy, security, etc) but I'd love to hear it :-) Duane

Mailman 3 database restore unexpected behavior

Mailman3 built from source using virtual environment. Version: GNU Mailman 3.3.8 (Tom Sawyer) Python 3.9.2 (default, Feb 28 2021, 17:03:44) [GCC 10.2.1 20210110] config file: /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg Issue: I have restored the database number of times recently and experienced that every time after restoration (an hour after) all members getting an email that they are unsubscribed due to bounces, however non of the users are actually unsubscribed from any lists. It looks like there are duplicates in database and all the duplicates are getting unsubscribed? Bounces message: name(a)email.com unsubscribed from [listname] mailing list due to bounces Only restoring two files: mailman3 and mailman3web Did anyone come acroos this behavior ? It is not right that after restoring a database all 1000 user get an email that they are unsubscribed, but they are actually not. I may do something wrong during the restoring process. Please advise me.

How to list all nonmembers from a list?

Hey there, I wanted to list all nonmembers from a list, I just can't find an easy way to do it. For listing members of a list it is quite clear: mailman members $mylist Is there a similar way for nonmembers!? Actually I'm pretty sure, that one can do it with the shell and I found some documentation on that. But I'm kind of a noob in these things and already tried a little around, but can't get anything to work: dump_members(mlist.nonmembers.members) from https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/latest/src/mailman/model/docs… Help qould be highly appreciated, thanks in advance! Is it possible to give the supporter team list administrator rights to all lists

Having everyone in our support team logging in using the same Mailman system administrator account is obviously far from good practice. Therefore, as the Mailman system administrator, all support is on my shoulders. Is there any way to create an administrator account for each supporter, so they can support the list administrators with their lists, without having access rights to the full system, as the Mailman list administrator have? Subscription requests = 0 ? Bug or feature?

eccentric setup question

Good morning all, we've got a somewhat eccentric setup for our mailman installation, and we're having difficulty getting some of the settings to work properly, so I'm hoping some one has some insight. Our server machine is hidden behind our firewall, with the actual machine name not availble via external DNS) and all the mail is being routed through an Exchange server. So mail to list(a)domain.com hits our exchange server, which sends it on to lists(a)listserver.domain.com The problem we're having is that if the mailman domain of the list is listserver.domain.com then spamfilters start to flag the mail since it looks like spoofing/malformed headers and so on. If the mailman domain is just domain.com then postfix rejects it with an unknown local recipient error. I though I might be able to just tweak the incoming mail headers in postfix via header_checks but that's not working, either because I've got the wrong check or it's the wrong approach, or both. postfix relay_domains might do it, I think, but if it maps listserver.domain.com to domain.com that would break the listserver domain mailing lists (I think). Is there a canonical way to do this and/or have I missed some obvious configuration option in either mailman or postfix? Kind regards, Jeff Berry jeff.berry(a)mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk

Need help setting up mailman3 on ubuntu 20.04...

I'm trying to get mailman3 up on ubuntu using the debian package. I did the "apt install mailman3-full" and it does seem to have installed as both the mailman3 & mailman3-web processes are running. I can use "mailman create" in the command-line and "mailman lists" displays the lists I created. What I am having issues with is I don't see any entries in/etc/aliases, and I don't know how to access the web interface (as either admin or user). Can someone point me to what I need to do to finish it? Thanks, Marisa

Hello all, I'm a blind server administrator living in Italy. I use mailman since 2010 and I was very happy for this list manager. When was released the version 3 I started to have many problems to configure it. In this days I installed a new server for my association and I have this problem that I don't know to solve. The server is a debian bullseye. I installed mailman3-full from the standard packege. I'm using nginx as web server. I configured mailman3 and mailman3-web wit https support. All is working fine, but if I attempt to subscribe someone it does not work. I send a subscription e-mail to the address list and I receive correctly the request to confirm subscription. When I reply to the request mailman log gives this error: requests.exceptions.SSLError: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='localhost', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: /postorius/api/templates/list/listname.domain/list:user:notice:welcome (Caused by SSLError(SSLCertVerificationError("hostname 'localhost' doesn't match either of 'example.com', 'www.example.com'"))) The strange thing is that I configured a domain list.example.com and in the configuration files I put this domain. Mailman3-web works fine I can create lists and make settings. Have you an idea about this issue? Change 'from' server for outgoing messages

Hi. I'm running mailman3 on a VPS. The hostname of the VPS is not the hostname that I'm using for mailman3. The webapp is using an Apache Virtual host. I am routing outgoing emails through a third-party smtp relay. The VPS hostname is smart.bnmng.com and the mailing list hostname is 757pug.org Signup confirmation and welcome emails are working. They appear to be coming from the intended host, which is 757pug.org But emails from the mailing lists are being blocked by the smtp relay. MM2 -> MM3 Migration: listinfo page

I have migrated from MM2 to MM3. However, writing HTML is not one of my strengths. I need to edit my MM2 listinfo page to: a. Remove everything below the "Subscribing to LISTNAME" heading and below that add a link to the new http://WEBSERVER/accounts/signup/ which ideally should open on a new browser tab. b. Hello, I've recently installed MM3 with Exim4 on, say, subdomain.myhost.tld and configured MM3 to use lists.someotherdomain.tld as web host and mail host. Thus, the mailman.cfg contains: [mta] smtp_host: lists.someotherdomain.tld When I send a message to test(a)lists.someotherdomain.tld it gets delivered, however the 'From:'-header becomes "test(a)subdomain.myhost.tld".

Attack on Mailman Server?

I had some attacks on my wordpress homepage today, I added some IPs to the blacklist of my firewall. Permissions issue after upgrade of virtualenv

Ola, So I installed a new virtualenv using Python3.11, kept all settings intact, copied /opt/mailman/mmvar from the old virtualenv to the new one. Hi guys, I have recently started receiving these mails from the system. First it was frighting me out that people's account got disabled, but actually nothing has happened, nobody got disabled. I however looking to figure out how can I control or change settings for this particular mechanism. Please advise me. emailname(a)example.it's subscription has been disabled on listname(a)domain.eu due to their bounce score exceeding the mailing list's bounce_score_threshold. Regards, Tibor

Question about the smtp log (rotation)

I have been asked to take over the management of the mailman3 servers as the prior admin left little documentation. One of the first things I need to do is optimize the logging. Currently the mailman.log is being rotated and zipped by user list and kept 5 day. (this is fine but would like to increase it some) But the smtp log has not been rotated since August (also created by user list) I cannot seem to find what process does this and how I can modify it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Archiver Hyperkitty Not Found

Hello, I upgraded from Debian 10 to 11 today, and hyperkitty archiver stopped working. From the mailman.log: AssertionError: Archiver not found: hyperkitty I followed along on a related thread: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… I don't see any resolution to that thread. The only thing that worked for me was removing the hyperkitty rows from the listarchiver table in the database. URLs in moderation messages

Hi, I’ve clearly got something wrong in my configuration, but I can’t work out what. All my URLs seem to have the “mailman3” part duplicated, i.e. Https://example.com/mailman3/mailman3/lists Is where I have to go to get a list of my mailing lists, which just doesn’t seem right. In my settings.py file I have: POSTORIUS_TEMPLATE_BASE_URL = 'https://example.com/mailman3/' If I change the value of this to just https://example.com/ it doesn’t change this, Where have I gone wrong? Hi! The error above occurs when starting mailman. The xxxx shows a part from the database section of mailman.cfg. I followed the tutorial https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Howto_Install_Mailman3_On_Debian10. But since django and postgres changed some things, I had to fix some files of mailman3 to get it working. This is the part of mailman.cfg: [database] class: mailman.database.postgresql.PostgreSQLDatabase url: postgresql://mailman:<mypassword>@localhost/mailman Full error: sqlalchemy.exc.OperationalError: (psycopg2.OperationalError) could not translate host name "assword>@localhost" to address: Name or service not known How can I fix this? Postfix problem with imported Mailman2 list

I installed and tested Mailman3. I imported a Mailman2 list. All looks good but I get this error. Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table; from=<hit(a)options.org> to=<atm(a)alist.net> The aliases seem to show up find in the GUI for the control panel software I use. Postfix virual file has a mapping of atm to atm(a)alist.net . It seems mailman at least sees the connection. Messages not picking up header or footer template

Hi I can't figure out how to get headers or footers on my messages Example: I create a footer in Postorius. The name in the form is '[list:member:regular:footer] - The footer for a regular (non-digest) message.' The data is 'Test Footer' I can see the entry in the database with the uri: http://localhost:8000/mailman3/api/templates/list/testing.comms.sdcvirginia… I can do a wget on that uri and download a copy of the footer, and it looks right But when I send a message to the list and the message is forwarded, the footer isn't on the messages that members receive Looking at mailman.log, I cannot see any attempt to access the footer. I can see connections to the REST API (config, roster/owner, roster/moderator) that correspond to the time I sent the message So what am I doing wrong? Thank you Ben

Error downloading CSV for 1,300 members

Any suggestions on troubleshooting downloading a modest-size CSV file for a list with 1,300 members? Multi-domain oddities in Hyperkitty and Postorius

In the OpenDev Collaboratory we've got a bunch of separate Mailman 2.1 vhosts we've started migrating into a single Mailman 3.3.7 server, desiring to take full advantage of its improved multi-domain support. For the most part everything is working great (kudos to everyone who maintains the software and documentation, it's excellent). One of the things our users noticed fairly quickly was Hyperkitty on the second vhost was incorrectly showing the FQDN of the first vhost near the top of its pages. This is covered in the FAQ of course, and seems to imply that what we want is to switch the SITE_ID from 1 to 0 in our settings.py in order to take advantage of magic domain-guessing behavior. So far so good. Unfortunately, SITE_ID = 0 seems to explicitly require the addition of "mail hosts" (or "mail domains" from Django's perspective), and all the web routing returns error pages for any list sites besides the first one since, by default, our server did not have these predefined. What's odd is that, if I log into Postorius as admin and visit the "manage domains" page, suddenly the database gets populated with mail hosts for all of the FQDNs associated with our imported mailing lists. I would not have expected merely visiting that page as an admin to have a side effect of adding entries for the "missing" mail hosts, is that an intentional behavior or merely a bug? Once these entries are automatically added by visiting that page, they're all associated with the one "web host" ("site" in Django) we have for the server, and now the list filtering functionality in Postorius breaks and any of the vhosts all display the full set of mailing lists on the server rather than only those associated with a particular vhost (note that this seems to only be confusing Postorius, Hyperkitty has them correctly filtered still). Okay, so it looks like this is because the mail hosts are all tied to the one web host. We can create additional "sites" in the Django admin UI and then switch the association of the mail hosts to those distinct web hosts. But after doing so, the first vhost still seems to show an unfiltered list of all lists in Postorius (Hyperkitty continues to be fine), while Postorius on the other vhosts correctly shows their filtered sets of lists instead. I also noticed when mailman-web is starting up, its log claims the first site is being set as the "default domain," so have to wonder if that's related to this behavior. Should we create an extra web host to serve as the "default" so that all our typical vhosts get the expected list filtering behavior, or am I completely off-base and there's a much better approach I've missed? Sorry this is so long, I feel like I have at most a tenuous grasp of the details and variables involved, but hopefully it makes sense to someone. Multiple domain problem

Hi, list! I have lists on two domains, example1.com and example2.com. The mail interface works perfectly. However, connecting a browser to example1.com, I get the title List index - example1.com, and the web interface seems to work fine. If I connect to example2.com, the title is example2.com, without the preceding List index. And the body says Page not found. I can't find anything in the logs that tells me the reason. SITE_ID is set to 0. Any idea? Thanks in advance, Lars

Installed but mailman reports missing hyperkitty module

I've opted for the Mailman3 package installation on Ubuntu 22 LTS on top of a manually installed Mailman3 core package from the Ubuntu 20 Debian repository. Everything is working great on my installation. However, if I try to enable hyperkitty in /etc/mailman.cfg postorius reports 500 status codes on all pages. /var/log/mailman3/mailman.log reports this error: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'mailman3_hyperkitty' Any idea why postorius can't seem to find the installed hyperkitty module? settings sanity check

can not search Chinese characters correctly

Confirm subscription via URL?

Dear all, in Mailman2, the email that is sent out to the subscriber for them to confirm their subscription contained a clickable URL. In mailman 3, the default templace for this action doesn't have this option. Is the functionality still there but has to be added to the template? If so, what is the scheme? Thanks! Johannes

changeaddress command and nonmembers

I recently upgraded a Mailman 2 installation (which included a number of email lists) to Mailman 3.3.3. There is one human user who in the past has used two different email addresses. Let's call them oldaddress(a)hotmail.com and newaddress(a)gmail.com. This person used to participate on an email list using oldaddress(a)hotmail.com (both posting and receiving). He then unsubscribed oldaddress(a)hotmail.com from the list and then subscribed to the email list as newaddress(a)gmail.com. All of this happened while using Mailman 2. Now that we're on Mailman 3 and the email list was migrated from MM2 to MM3, we see that newaddress(a)gmail.com is a Member of the list, and we see that oldaddress(a)hotmail.com is a NonMember of the list. That all makes sense. But now, this person has decided that they actually want to go back to using the old address. So I ran the command "mailman changeaddress newaddress(a)gmail.com oldaddress(a)hotmail.com". But that gave me this output: Usage: mailman changeaddress [OPTIONS] OLD_ADDRESS NEW_ADDRESS Try 'mailman changeaddress -h' for help. Error: Address oldaddress(a)hotmail.com already exists; can't change. Can anyone explain how I can do what I'm trying to accomplish? (Also, why is this error displaying the usage message? That seems odd, since the number and type of arguments was correct.)
