It took me several hours to figure out how to start Mailman2.1 on a Debian system, where it is package is run as list. I am very sorry to you folks for not getting back on the problems I am having to install on Debian testing. There are two reasons. One is that I have been much offline for personal reasons. The other is that I have another machine called tagol where I have been running Mailman3 for about three years, using the Debian packet on Debian testing. As testing move to 3.13 this installation could not run. I replaced mailman-core with a 3.12 venv install, but left the mailman3-web package of Debian. This half-arsed job held up for a long time but two weeks ago collapsed. No email went through. I have been trying to switch to a full venv version, still staying with 3.12. Tagol hosts a single list mailman@tagol:~$ mailman lists 1 matching mailing lists found: bibnez(a)folks.email I have some bad queue files. Subscription confirmation email

While doing some tests I subscribed to a mailinglist by sending an email to <list>-join@<domain> Mailman correctly emailed the confirmation request, and the mail was accepted by my ISP. For some reason the confirmation mail did not arrive in my mailbox nor in my spam folder, it seems to have been silently dropped. A day later, I again sent a subscription request to <list>-join@<domain>, and I received a mail from <list>-bounces@<domain> with subject "The results of your email commands" saying that I have a pending subscription for that mailinglist. However, no confirmation link is included, nor instructions to visit the website to confirm the subscription. Am I missing something in the configuration? I would expect that a confirmation request is mailed again to the subscriber. Most subscribers don't use the web interface to manage their subscriptions. *Introduction: * My name is *Sonika Chowdary Gutha*, and I am a *second-year Computer Science undergraduate at BITS Pilani, India*. The goal of this feature is to allow list administrators or owners to *export the configuration and membership data of a specific mailing list into a portable backup file and restore it later when needed*. Hi, I have a venv installation (mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web) with python 3.11 from the Linux distribution. Since distribution EOL nears, I checked python version in next distribution and it is python 3.13. So my guess is, after distro upgrade, this will stop working. Where to start looking?

So I imported all our mailman2 lists into mailman3, and it appears it didn't preserve passwords. So my wife (who administers 3 lists of her own) tried to use the reset password link (multiple times) but she never gets the email. I don't see any outgoing email to her in mail.log, or any of the mailman logs. I do the exact same thing as her and I get the email. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? -- Paul Tomblin

Accept these non-members

Hi, list! I have an announce only Mailman3 list. When I log into the web interface as an admin user, and go to the specified list, and choose Settings, I find the Message Acceptance tab. There, I find the edit field Accept these non-members. But this field is empty, although I know that some people have permissions and are able to post to this list. How can I find the list of these non-members and add more people or delete someone? I'm running Mailman version 3.3.10, and mailman-web version 4.2.21. Any hints? Thanks, Lars

Additional info/tags on Members

I am managing a few mailing lists which are hosted on a mailman3 instance. None of these are allowing self-subscription, but I have a need to be able to search the membership by association, ie whether they belong to any of a number of named groups Currently there does not seem to be any means for attaching a comment field, tag or such to group members, which would allow keeping such metadata and using it for searching members. (and no, the email addresses of members of one or more groups may not be similar, hence searching by @domain or such will not work) Also, the group-association info should *not* be exposed externally (ie to the member in question or any others), which makes adding the tag/group info as part of the full name impossible. Is there any way to do this in mailman3? If not can this be counted as a feature request: - in mailman3 itself: + add a facility that allows storing additional info to each member , either as a (largish) comment field or an array of tags ++ if tags, it should support managing thousands of them (but each member is likely to only need a few associated) + if tags are used, each list should have its own set of tags (though a means to designate a list to participate in a global tag collection might be useful). - in postorious: + allow modifying the comment field, or adding/removing/modifying one or more tags to each list-member + allow searching a group's membership by tags (or substring in the comment field), ++ following which mass-operations (deletion, setting moderation flags etc) should be possible based on individual selection of the found fields mailman3 really only would need to support storing the additional data for each member, as (at least in my use case) that data is not actually required for mail forwarding. However, it seems to be desirable to store the info in the mailman3 database rather than an external system (to reduce chances that these might get out of sync).

There is currently a merge request at <https://gitlab.com/mailman/django-mailman3/-/merge_requests/345> to hide the "Results per page:" dropdown from some Postorius and HyperKitty pages when the full list of items (lists) is on the page. I.e. when the number of items is <=10 and the "Results per page:" is the default 10, don't display the dropdown. However there is some controversy over whether this should also apply say when the number of items is > 10 but still is on one page. So the question is if we are going to hide the dropdown when "Results per page:" is the default 10 and there are <= 10 items so all are on the page, should we also hide it when say "Results per page:" is 25 and there are 22 items all on the page. Your opinion on this is requested via a reply in this thread. I installed 3.9 with pip last week, but i want to upgrade to 3.10. But pip install -U mailman postorius django-mailman3 hyperkitty mailman-web doesn't upgrade it. The Archiving is still display Email Signature in Plain-Text after I configured filter content: No and convert html to plaintext: No in Alter Messages. And Markdown text in Archiving settings. Can't add emails to accept_these_nonmembers

I need to set some nonmembers to a list as these members send message to the list, but don't need to receive any message from the list. I've used list_name.settings['accept_these_nonmembers'].append to add members to the list, but it gets discarded once I run list_name.settings.save().

Debian bug report

So I went to submit a bug report to Debian about the fact that the mailman3-web page drags in nginx for no reason. Turns out that the bug had been reported in 2021 and nobody who worked on it who understood mailman understood apache and nobody who worked on it who understood apache understood mailman[1]. High IO for 8+ hours

First time running runjobs monthly since I installed it a few days ago, and it's been maxing out I/O for the last 8 hours. There doesn't appear to be any logging going on. I am using Xapian, by the way. Is this normal? Is this going to happen every month, or is the first month special? -- Paul Tomblin

Debian upgrade Hyperkitty not archiving

Hi List, I may be in the wrong place so bear with me. I'm working at a volunteer organization with around a dozen mailing lists that were previously on mm2 that have been upgraded to mm3 with the upgrade to debian trixie. Mailman is running and the lists all work ok but i found 1800 mails in the shunt queue. Hyperkitty also shows all the old archives pre 2020 the same as in the django console. When i tried to unshunt the mails they moved to the bad queue. How do i find whats wrong here? message duplication and an NNTP related error

Good day, I have recently installed mailman3 on a Debian trixie system. While I managed to set up most of it (the mailing lists, postorius and also a working gateway to our inn2 news server) I'm seeing a weird duplication of messages, that seems to be related to the error messages posted below. When I switch off gating to nntp the duplication stops. Also only mail messages are duplicated, not the postings on the news server. I've got my server set up correctly (I hope) and on an https connection, and I *think* I've got it set up so mailman-web will only respond on localhost:8000, but I occasionally get a flood of emails like this: > Internal Server Error: /admin/login/ > > DoesNotExist at /admin/login/ > Site matching query does not exist. Followed by a bunch of Django stuff, followed by > HTTP__X__CLIENT_IP = '127.0.0.1' > HTTP__X__FORWARDED_FOR = '127.0.0.1, 185.177.72.38' > HTTP__X__FORWARDED_HOST = '96.126.110.20' > HTTP__X__FORWARDED_SERVER = 'list.xcski.com' > HTTP__X__FORWARED = '127.0.0.1' > HTTP__X__HOST = '127.0.0.1' > HTTP__X__ORIGINATING_IP = '127.0.0.1' > HTTP__X__REAL_IP = '127.0.0.1' > PATH_INFO = '/admin/login/' > QUERY_STRING = 'next=/admin/' > REMOTE_ADDR = '127.0.0.1' The HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR was a clue where it was coming from, and grepping through my apache access logs shows a script kiddie at 185.177.72.38 hammering a miliion urls, 99% of them 404s. On the documentation about migration at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html, there are two commands that start `python manage.py hyper kitty_import|update_index_on_list`, but there is no manage.py installed if you install Mailman and Mailman web following the instructions. Instead, I was able to run them using `mailman-web hyperkitty_import|update_index_one_list` instead. What is the correct method for reporting these errors?

Can't import from Mailman 2.1

I set up a new Mailman site using 3.3.10, and copied over my files from my old mailman site (using 2.1.34). Customizing Postorios web templates

Hi, I have two list servers that I would like customize the web pages for, specifically I need to add some legal information to the footer, and I might want to apply some light branding to the site. I can't find any hints on how to do that, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? If Postorious does not currently allow that outright, it seems I would need to fork mailman/postorious, replace templates like https://gitlab.com/mailman/postorius/-/blob/master/src/postorius/templates/…, and build the package myself. Is this assessment correct? If so, would there be interest in adding a feature to define some blocks that can be overridden more easily, especially during deployment and without having to build custom Python packages? Digestion debugging

I'm having trouble getting digests to work. When I try to manually send one, it does nothing, and then the digest gets deleted (I guess?). I would love it if the documentation explained a bit more how the process works. How are the files gathered? What file can I backup and later restore if I'm debugging it? Also, how are the digest issue and volume numbers work? Is there any way to control that? Since I've been running digests for decades, can I set the volume and issue to what I want so that the numbering continues from where the other installation left off? Hello, On my new MM3 that I just installed, I testing unsubscribe user from mailing list. User received email for the unsubscribe in subject line as 'You have been unsubscribed from the Test1 mailing list' with email address 'test1-bounces@domain'. I'm new to MM3. I just finished install it. I setup a test list with default settings as test1@domain. I added a user to the list via Mass Subscription with Pre confirm check and Pre approved check. Inside the user inbox in GMail account received email from address test1-confirm@domain ( I added this erp_confirm_format: $address to [mta] in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg) with Your confirmation is needed to join the test1@domain mailing list. I replied to the email and I received another email as test1-bounce@domain. I went to my mailing test1@domain. I found a user that I tried to add list in 'Subscription request' under 'Pending Confirmation'. Could you help me to troubleshooting on this? Hi, I have setup in Debian Trixie mailman3-full and came that far, that I have created a mailing list. I can sent emails to the members. However when I send from an email which is non-member the message is held. If I want to accept this message as list admin, I get: `An error occurred while processing your request.` And I get an email: `Internal Server Error: /mailman3/postorius/.../held_messages TemplateSyntaxError at /postorius/lists/.../held_messages 'humanize' is not a registered tag library. Inaccessible User Profile

I have a long time user that cannot access their profile. When I click on users/members then that user as superuser, I get this error. Page not found This page either doesn't exist, or it moved somewhere else. When I click that uers manage button, the page comes up but it says there are no subscriptions. This user was subscribed as of couple of days ago. Can this be fixed via admin functions?

Mailman and Postfix Conflicting Information

I've been going in circles between mailman and postfix trying to get things working. My current condition is that either mailman is putting incoming mail in the bit bucket or postfix is not sending incoming mail to mailman. According to the postfix forum my mailman configuration is messed up but it was auto generated by the installer. They're not very interesting to human beings and take up a lot of UI space, even if you only display the date. Expire non-members

Is there a way to expire and delete (in mailman3 or via cron) non-members? I've been running mailman3 for a couple of weeks now on a few mailing lists, and on my big list specifically I'm seeing lots of spam to the gcfl-join(a)gcfl.net email alias, which creates these non-members, but they never confirm their subscription, so they remain in non-member limbo. Permissions Error on /var/mail/mailman

I am going in circles between postfix issues and mailman. However, before I continue with postfix debugging I want to resolve this first as it may be related for all I know. I'm getting this error in the postfix mail log: 2026-02-01T11:00:10.106626-05:00 dap002 postfix/local[113730]: 01623500076: to=<mailman(a)myhost.localdomain>, orig_to=<mailman>, relay=local, delay=0.16, de lays=0.11/0.01/0/0.04, dsn=5.2.0, status=bounced (cannot update mailbox /var/mail/mailman for user mailman. cannot open file: Permission denied) I'm not sure why mailman is trying to write to that file but it is owned by root:mail. It is obvious why permission is denied to mailman. Is that directory really part of mailman3 and if so what should ownership and permissions be? If not then why is mailman trying to write to it? That path does not appear in any of the files in /etc/mailman3.

Is there an option to "disable" a list temporarily? (feature request?!)

Hello dear Mailman Team, I scanned through the web interface of my mailman instance... and I did not find an option to disable a list temporarily ("sending" and "access to web interface")... This might come in handy when a list is abused for sending spams or when a list owner wants his/her list to be removed... Instead of removing the list instantly I would disable it for three months first... (You never know with users... ;-) ) Preferably I would backup the list (settings and members) and the archives, but as seen in the discussion there is actually no backup mechanism for lists... Is there an option to disable a list (except from resetting passwords and remove/disable mail aliases)? If not I'd like to hand this in as a feature request... xD Thank you very much and kind regards Christian

Request for ideas and mentors for Summer of Code 2026

Hi all, The GNU Mailman Project is applying for Google Summer of Code 2026[1]. Our Ideas Page[2] has been updated. We're still open for mentors, of course, and ideas. There's no deadline, but to be most useful it would be helpful to have these suggestions by February 19 when Google announces selected organizations. Summer of Code projects must involve substantial amounts of new code. The effort involved should be 150 to 200 hours (although programmers' skills may be anywhere from "novice" to "10x", so the amount of code can vary more than that!) Projects which are primarily documentation, user interface skinning, or tests are usually ineligible. Please send those to me by email or on this list if you think the idea would be of interest to other Mailman users, or might trigger suggestions for improvement from them. We are also interested in "tiny" tasks which are suitable for demonstrating interest and making the applicant familiar with our review process. If you have some minor annoyance (whether bug or missing feature) that you think might take an experienced Mailman dev an hour, this is a good chance to get some eyes on it. For these it would be most helpful if you file an issue on the relevant project (usually core[3], Postorius[4], or HyperKitty[5]), and mark it "easy" and "GSoC", and "beginner-friendly" if appropriate. (The difference between "easy" and "beginner-friendly" is "easy" means low effort, while "beginner-friendly" means it does not require prior knowledge of Mailman internals or non-stdlib Python modules such as SQLAlchemy, Zope, or Django.) Documentation and testing tasks are welcome here. Looking forward to your ideas! Phantom Email Address in Nonmember List

Have an issue that is more of a puzzle than a problem. No real harm done. So don't spend much time on it if you don't recognize the issue. I am administrator for a small list, radg(a)lists.radg.us, hosted by Mailmanlists.net. They are trying hard to figure it out but so far unsuccessful. Looking at the headers of emails sent from steve(a)stevebrown.us to the list and boomeranged back to me, I see a line “X-MailFrom: bounce+66273f.99dcd9c-radg=lists.radg.us(a)stevebrown.xn--us-02t. I gather that it is designating the return path where a message would be sent if there was a delivery problem. From its position in the header, I suspect it is added as they pass through Mailgun, maybe related to DKIM. I am hoping you might know why that bounce address is recognized by Mailman 3 as a real address for my emails, but not for others, even from my wife’s computer traversing the same path from our home to the Mailman 3 server. The Mailman installation does get and process the post, but also puts the “bounce+,,,” address in its list of nonmembers. Mailmanlists.net hasn’t figured out the behavior. I can provide full header information if that would help. My understanding of how headers work is very limited. Steve Brown

Domain defaults for new lists

Hi Folks, Is there a simple way to set up the defaults for any newly created lists? We've had a few cases recently where in the time between creating a mass-populated list and making it private it's been inundated with spam. I'd like to change the defaults so newly-created lists are private and have private archives, new members are moderated, etc., to give time for the list to be set up completely before announcing it to the world.
