[MM3-users] applying patch 1130

Please forgive a dumb question from a non-programmer: How to apply the !1130.diff patch to a venv installation? https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/merge_requests/1130 I am looking to upgrade Debian 11 to 12. The latter uses python3.11, which no longer has a dependency on importlib_resources. As a result, MM3 won't start unless all references to importlib_resources instead call importlib.resources, now part of stdlib. I tried patching all importlib.resource references by hand, and MM3 starts – but that can't be the "right" way to do this. Also, the diff references a src directory that doesn't exist under /opt/mailman. Thanks in advance for patching clues. dn

[MM3-users] Only allow users to subscribe from certain domains

Does Mailman have anyway to just allow users to subscribe themselves to a list from certain domains... ie any user from test.com or test2.com I do not believe this exists, but have a list manger who is asking. I feel they will have to either, approve all requests, or have a web frontend built that could filter that out and then send the subscribe commands in the backend. Thanks

Hi - I couldn't find the locks. So I rebooted the computer and it told me to force start it using: mailman -C /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg start --force I recall someone asking using bugzilla (?) a few months ago, if this could be in the startup file. What do you think about that?

PS: sorry but indeed start -f was working: sudo -u mailman /opt/mailman/venv/bin/mailman status GNU Mailman is running (master pid: 1567982) But sudo systemctl restart mailman3 Job for mailman3.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status mailman3.service" and "journalctl -xeu mailman3.service" for details. But Mailman is running. I am confused. What do I miss? Thanks and best

Thanks, so with that info I was able to dig around and confirm it is the "Subject prefix" that is being displayed. Not sure why some clients display it and others do not, but that will be for the end user to talk to their email team about cause it is not a mailman issue.

[MM3-users] Templates via Webinterface are i) not set, and ii) set templates (files) are not shown in the Webinterface

I use mailman3 since a while, for some of my lists I have been using - list:member:digest:footer.txt - list:member:regular:footer.txt When I go to "Vorlagen" (LC: DE) (templates) in the web interface, I do _not_ see these two templates! When I got o my newest mailing list and when I setup templates via the Webinterfaces, these are shown there, but are neither working nor seen as files. What's wrong here? Is that a problem of the localisation language (DE)? Bug, feature or misunderstanding of myself?

[MM3-users] Alias for a list name

I've migrated a list from mm 21 to mm 3 sucessfully. The mm 21 runs on domains managed by Postfix as virtual alias domains. That way it was possible to alias a shorter name for a list to the list name. To run mm 3 through Postfix, I use local_recipient_maps and transport_maps. What I want to achieve, is alias medlem(a)list.saf-org.no to saf-medlem(a)list.saf-org.no I tried to put medlem(a)list.saf-org.no: saf-medlem(a)list.saf-org.no and get the following error when running newaliases: postalias: warning: /etc/aliases, line 231: name must be local Is it possible to do this aliasing in a simple way? I've got exactly the same set-up as Kilian and changed the "Server error" page (with associated debug email) to a "Page not found" page. Thank you for this Matt. One thing that I noted was that the change didn't take immediately. In hindsight I think that I needed to restart the "uwsgi" service, but I was doing some server updates anyway so rebooted the whole server.

Hi Odhiambo, My mailman3 logs are empty (/var/log/mailman3/mailman.log). Nothing has been written to the log files since the OS upgrade. I do see the following in /var/log/syslog for each time that I restart the service with "systemctl start mailman3": >2023-11-06T14:00:19.549985-05:00 slc systemd[1]: Starting mailman3.service - LSB: Mailman3 server... But I cannot find any log entries that might indicate why the service is exiting. Can you be more specific about how to create a new venv and move the "var" directory, etc. Thanks, Gordon

In the exim logfile there is only something like C="250 Ok" (whereas in mails sent to another exim there is something like C="250 OK id=…"). I imported an archive from a list created in September 2013 with the following command: mailman-web hyperkitty_import -l annonsering(a)hodr.no --since 2013-09-01 <mbox file> No errors reported. I then did mailman-web update_index_one_list annonsering(a)hodr.no No, when I go to https://hodr.no/archives/list/annonsering@hodr.no/, I cannot choose mails earlier than January 2023. Hello, everyone. I just completed the initial installation by following the instructions: https://docs.list.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#virtualenv-install I went with the apache/uswgi configuration. The site is up and running, but if I click Postorius, it gets redirected to https://mysite.com/postorius/lists and I get not found error message. The same goes for Lists and Archives. What did I do wrong? I've found some discussions online, but they seem to be related to a different installation, thus my confusion. Thank you!

Hello list! I saw a few posts regarding the "Uncaught runner exception: module 'time' has no attribute 'clock'" problem but no solution to that. It seems this issue sneaked in at some point. I was getting aware of it when suddenly notifications to non-member posts did not work anymore. Everything else seems still to work. So, what is the prefered solution here? Is it possible to "repair" focal? There is python2.7, python3.6 and python3.8 installed currently. Or do I need to switch to a supported distribution like debian something? Wait for ubuntu 24.04? I myself am agnostic about the difference, and probably prefer to keep things the way mailman3 recommends. The questions are: 1. What could be explained to the user to convince them the new method is preferable. 2. Can this be customized with a Setting? (Not that we will end up modifying it. Just curious). Thanks.

I think I tracked down the related django error for that message. mailmanweb.log says MySQLdb.OperationalError: (1366, "Incorrect string value: '\\xF0\\x9F\\x98\\x8A. ...' for column `mailmanweb`.`hyperkitty_email`.`content` at row 1") but collation is utf8mb4_general_ci on the table. Do I need to maybe specify it in settings file?

One quick follow up. I'm making a subscribe request for a moderator. I'm passing in list_id, subscriber, and role (moderator). The request is returning a 201 response, but when I shell into the mailman server and inspect the list directly it shows there are no moderators. I've confirmed the list id, and I can see a list of regular members, but when I use the command line, the only version of the query which shows members is the default: `mailman members <list name>`. I assume I'm doing something wrong, but I'm not seeing it.

Hi Abhilash, I checkout the v0.5.2 for testing my upgrade from 0.4.6 and noticed, that the docker-image-version is still set to 0.4 in docker-compose.yaml. Is there any reason for it or should it be set to 0.5? I´m still using my good old mariadb. I did not find any upgrade-informations about breaking-changes. Hi, I am looking for some advice: If we use the virtualenv install method, how does one keep track of security updates for all the installed dependencies? I can think of: - Upgrade regularly all installed packages inside the virtualenv. This might break mailman3 if there are incompatible updates. - Try to track all dependencies and check if there are security updates published. Mistakes were made, and for while every single outbound email bounced. I've fixed the mistakes, but now in my largest and most active email list, every single user's delivery status is "Disabled by Bounces". Is there a way to bulk fix this? I'm working on setting up MailMan 3 on an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS server. I've got everything running and working with docker-mailman. Now I'm looking at configuring ARC and am a bit lost. How is ARC configured in a mailman3 with multiple domains? Do I set it up to use the hostname of the server Mailman is running on? Thanks for any assistance, --[Lance]

Error: A previous run of GNU Mailman did not exit cleanly (stale_lock). Try using --force mailman@lists:~$ I try using --force and it did not work. So how do I start it? Dear All, We have a Mailman3 instance with around 500 mailing lists. Most of the mailing lists have 5000 subscribers. Because of some misconfiguration in the postfix, posting for 1000 users has been bounced. Until we realized what happened, the mailman had set delivery_status to "disabled_by_bounces." for many subscribers. Now, I am unable to locate any command or an API call through which I can change the delivery_status back to enabled for 1000+ users. Can you please guide me on how I can do this programmatically using cli (I will write a bash script) or using an API call? Regards, Hitachi.

Hi, I am a very non-savvy mailman list user. I am trying to set up a list via cPanel but when I send emails there are two signatures. One is my usual signature and the other, below, is appended by Mailman and includes an http link to a non-existent page on my website. How do I strip the auto signature, just leaving my own? I use Mailman via cPanel on two separate hosting accounts. One works fine and this new one attaches the list address. Hi, After accepting the message the smtp.log doesn't show any sign of further processing. Other mailinglists on the same host are doing fine. Even a 1:1 copy of the list works - only the original list does not work. Evene after deleting and recreating the list the error persists. The maillog oft the host only shows the incoming mail, but not the outgoing. The mail seems to vanish after accepting. mailman members --regular --nomail enabled LISTSPEC Shows a lot of addresses - so all the members of the list don't recieve an mail, which explains the vanished mail. Next step: Enable the the mailing for them.

With computers the word "default" has a specific meaning: if you have not manually set a value, this is the fallback result that occurs when you selected "nothing". "List default" matches that meaning. When user joins a list, they are assigned this option. Nothing has been manually selected by a moderator for the user. Do any other uses of the word match this definition? An action that involves a selection or choice from a drop-down, and only occurs because of a selection or a choice, is not a "default". "standard accept processing" "regular accept" ... yeah, those could be possibilities.

Thank you. As I need to go through ~20 mailing lists, is there any way to programmatically also modify the templates? I could not find a script for doing this but it would nice to have, as I managed, as known, to write and to run scripts, which is very helpful (because we re-generate the _whole_ mailsystem daily if there are changes in our membership database). Thus a script to fix (at least) ml footers would also be great!

Dear all, I am quity puzzled to receive a bunch of mails which are moderators works - I just set up one person as a list moderator - but I do receive the moderation request as well. How can this be stopped? I just tested the behaviour and I can't see any switch in the list settings (at the moment) to avoid sending moderations to the owner for such lists, where moderator(s) are defined. A Bug?

I’m using Mariadb instead of PostgreSQL, but that is no problem until now. Where i fail: I have to make an entry var_dir: /opt/mailman/mm/var in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg. But there is no directory /opt/mailman/mm, and there are no subdirectories. No $var_dir, no postfix_lmtp, no postfix_transports. Where do i get those files from? TIA QNo

The documentation says to use mailman manage.py but does not say where it is. I may have found the problem but would like confirmation before I mess things up.. The proxy stuff added to apache.conf asks for the modules mod_headers.c and mod_proxy.c. They do not exist in /etc/apache2/mods-available. However, none of the modules in that directory are file type 'c'. In any case if those modules are not loaded would not that explain my problem? I'm not sure it is appropriate to add those modules with a2enmod.

Stephen: I get it. It just seems there is no place where all these *nix dependent variations are easily found. Mailman docs seems like to logical place. I'd be happy to add those notes if I knew how. Anyway, I still need help. I migrated my mailman2 to mailman3 per the documentation and all seemed to go well. However, now that I have the web UI working, no lists show up. Indeed, using mysql, all the relevant tables in mailman db are empty. How do I figure out if the import really worked when there are no error messages?

I created a new list with this setting. This new created list can send to Gmail addresses, this is very strange, because I have changed the problem list (The list that cannot send to @gmail addresses) settings to match the new one, but still the issue is there. The only difference is that the problem list has been imported from mailman2. Question: is there a command line that displays all the settings of a list? I think it might be some hidden settings that are not visible in the UI? [MM3-users] Missing styling on select pages

Hello all, I installed mailman3 on Rocky Linux 9 via the Virtualenv Installation installation guide. I configured Apache httpd to proxy gunicorn. For the most part, everything is looking good except for some select pages that do not contain the styling like all other pages. When a user sees the "Verify Your Email Address" screen, it's without any of the styling. /accounts/confirm-email/ Same for when a user tries to reset their password. The initial screen looks good (with styling), but after entering the email address and clicking "Reset My Password", the following screen is bare. /accounts/password/reset/done/ I have Mailman 3.3.10, Postorius Version 1.3.13, and HyperKitty version 1.3.12. Any suggestions?

[MM3-users] MM3 gateway errors and frequent reboot needs

We have had to reboot the list server almost every week and wonder if there is something leaking and eating up resources. I does not appear to be memory, though. The server is slow to respond (could be because it's overseas) and then after some time we get intermittent gateway errors and finally we cannot access the lists online because of the gateway errors. It appears to me that the issue is with Postorius, but I could be wrong. Do files get closed after opening? Are we alone having such issues? Please advise. PS: My old MM2 installation could (and did) run without any help. Not so with MM3.

So I see the process for migrating an archive from mailman2 to mailman3 https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html.................. i.e python manage.py hyperkitty_import -l foo-list(a)example.com $var_prefix/archives/private/foo-list.mbox/foo-list.mbox but does the migration handle attachments?? attachments are in ..../archives/private/foo-list/attachments. I assume this is if you are upgrading in place? I am migrating to a new server and my plan is to follow these steps but copy the config.pck. and .mbox files to the new server and import them, but then it looks like I need to copy the attachment directory? if so how do I import the attachments to mailman3?

[MM3-users] Does hyperkitty show JPEGs in line and what about attachments?

I run several MailMan 2.1 mailing lists and some subscribers are frustrated by the way pipermail deals with JPEGs that are embedded in the messages and also with how attachments are handled. Does hyperkitty in Mailman 3.1 do better on these issues. Assuming this message gets archived, I am going to try embedding a small picture right here: Hopefully that shows up in the archive. I won't add an attachment because the list may not allow it but I'm curious how those are handled. Apparently somewhere there is a secret key that is configured to "ofwl5GkP2_1nDnfM8-vAjAwl_Ss" but should be something else. My best guess is that this is the SECRET_KEY in settings.py, and probably there is some data leftover from before that was signed with the key above but SECRET_KEY in settings.py is still "MyVerrySecretKey". Or it could be the other way around. Don't know what to do about it though.

I had this issue (using the dockerized version) when - UWSGI_STATIC_MAP=/static=/opt/mailman-web-data/static has been set to the wrong path. Maybe it's just the same: that your web server doesn't find the location for the static files. [MM3-users] mailman break DKIM signature by modifying body

Hi, I'm using mailman 3.3.8. Some messages with attachments from Google users get rejected by spam filters because of invalid DKIM signatures. It seems, that mailman alters some lines in the body. Here an example: Original message: --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- Lines: 2031 --000000000000f846c505fc494b7a-- --000000000000f846c705fc494b7c Content-Type: application/pdf; [...] Content-Disposition: attachment; [...] --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- Altered message: --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- Lines: 2032 --000000000000f846c505fc494b7a-- --000000000000f846c705fc494b7c Content-Type: application/pdf; [...] Content-Disposition: attachment; [...] --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- An empty line is added, and the spaces after the semicolons are removed. Perhaps related to https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/issues/1079. What could I do please, to prevent such modifications of the body? TIA for any help, -- Peter

[MM3-users] Question about message bounce stats

When I used Mailgun some time back, it had a feature of, for any specific outgoing mailing, being able to show you stats and other details of which mails were received ok, which bounced, and which were undeliverable, which I found helpful to check every so often. Their system also kept track of long-term trends, eg for addresses that frequently failed. Does Mailman3 keep such stats, and if so is there any way to get access to them, even if only API? I would think it useful to do so (and yes, for individual outgoing messages at least for a period).
