[MM3-users] Configuring ARC with multiple domains in Mailman3

I'm working on setting up MailMan 3 on an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS server. I've got everything running and working with docker-mailman. Now I'm looking at configuring ARC and am a bit lost. How is ARC configured in a mailman3 with multiple domains? Do I set it up to use the hostname of the server Mailman is running on? Thanks for any assistance, --[Lance]

Running Debian 4.19.316-1 Python 3.7.3 I am unable to start mailman core mailman@lists:~$ /opt/mailman/mm/bin/mailman start Usage: mailman start [OPTIONS] Try 'mailman start -h' for help. Error: A previous run of GNU Mailman did not exit cleanly (stale_lock). Try using --force mailman@lists:~$ I try using --force and it did not work. So how do I start it? Bottom line: I would like for Mailman core to start when I reboot the server. How can this be achieved please?

[MM3-users] Change delivery_status in bulk

Dear All, We have a Mailman3 instance with around 500 mailing lists. Most of the mailing lists have 5000 subscribers. Because of some misconfiguration in the postfix, posting for 1000 users has been bounced. Until we realized what happened, the mailman had set delivery_status to "disabled_by_bounces." for many subscribers. Now, I am unable to locate any command or an API call through which I can change the delivery_status back to enabled for 1000+ users. Can you please guide me on how I can do this programmatically using cli (I will write a bash script) or using an API call? Regards, Hitachi.

Dear Users, I'm trying to use acceptable_aliases for a specific list; Setting is also active; # curl -s -q --user restadmin:..... http://localhost:8001/3.1/lists/postmaster@domain/config | jq { "acceptable_aliases": [ "abuse@domain" ], However venv/data/postfix_lmtp does not contain abuse@domain, so postfix rejects the mail. Hi, I am a very non-savvy mailman list user. I am trying to set up a list via cPanel but when I send emails there are two signatures. One is my usual signature and the other, below, is appended by Mailman and includes an http link to a non-existent page on my website. How do I strip the auto signature, just leaving my own? I use Mailman via cPanel on two separate hosting accounts. One works fine and this new one attaches the list address. I can't see what I did differently with the first! any help gratefully received Kate

Please confirm that setting up a rule for cc's in Header Filter to "hold for moderation," it should block the member from sending a cc? If you installed using the "venv" method, then the spool should be at: /opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/hyperkitty/spool There shouldn't be a /var/mailman/spool created using venv. Which method did you use during your installation?

Hi, After accepting the message the smtp.log doesn't show any sign of further processing. Other mailinglists on the same host are doing fine. Even a 1:1 copy of the list works - only the original list does not work. Evene after deleting and recreating the list the error persists. The maillog oft the host only shows the incoming mail, but not the outgoing. The mail seems to vanish after accepting. mailman members --regular --nomail enabled LISTSPEC Shows a lot of addresses - so all the members of the list don't recieve an mail, which explains the vanished mail. Next step: Enable the the mailing for them.

With computers the word "default" has a specific meaning: if you have not manually set a value, this is the fallback result that occurs when you selected "nothing". "List default" matches that meaning. When user joins a list, they are assigned this option. Nothing has been manually selected by a moderator for the user. Do any other uses of the word match this definition? An action that involves a selection or choice from a drop-down, and only occurs because of a selection or a choice, is not a "default". "standard accept processing" "regular accept" ... yeah, those could be possibilities.

Thank you. As I need to go through ~20 mailing lists, is there any way to programmatically also modify the templates? I could not find a script for doing this but it would nice to have, as I managed, as known, to write and to run scripts, which is very helpful (because we re-generate the _whole_ mailsystem daily if there are changes in our membership database). Thus a script to fix (at least) ml footers would also be great!

[MM3-users] Why are moderation mails sent to list moderator (if there are any) _and_ then also to the list owner?

Dear all, I am quity puzzled to receive a bunch of mails which are moderators works - I just set up one person as a list moderator - but I do receive the moderation request as well. How can this be stopped? I just tested the behaviour and I can't see any switch in the list settings (at the moment) to avoid sending moderations to the owner for such lists, where moderator(s) are defined. A Bug?

Hi all, i tried to install Mailman3 according to https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html#virtualenv-inst…. I’m using Mariadb instead of PostgreSQL, but that is no problem until now. Where i fail: I have to make an entry var_dir: /opt/mailman/mm/var in /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg. But there is no directory /opt/mailman/mm, and there are no subdirectories. No $var_dir, no postfix_lmtp, no postfix_transports. Where do i get those files from? TIA QNo

Mark, I removed that DMARC because you are correct, it was redundant, but now the issue with the FROM address is a problem. Could this be a setting someone that you know of? When I start a new thread either through e-mail or hyperkitty, it seems to do the same thing. Any thoughts? Joe

Do you have a programmatic way to delete n ( n > 20) such entries in Postorius, e.g. via a python script + REST to loop through all lists and perhaps to exclude a few based on a small condition (like a text found in old template and/or list name)? This would be very helpful.

Reviving this old thread... Are folks still using Google Workspace or Sendgrid for Mailman? For Sendgrid, don't all sending addresses have to be verified? How do you get around that? Surely you don't have all list members go through the verification process? Does Google not have this restriction? Or am I missing something about how this works? Are people just having all list emails come from the list email address and using the Reply To header or something?

I didn't see that in the documentation. Anyway, that seems to have worked and I was able to import the list. However, I cannot import the archives. The documentation says to use mailman manage.py but does not say where it is. My search turned up 2, so which do I use? ./venv/lib/python3.12/site-packages/falcon/bench/dj/manage.py ./venv/lib/python3.12/site-packages/mailman_web/manage.py

I may have found the problem but would like confirmation before I mess things up.. The proxy stuff added to apache.conf asks for the modules mod_headers.c and mod_proxy.c. They do not exist in /etc/apache2/mods-available. However, none of the modules in that directory are file type 'c'. In any case if those modules are not loaded would not that explain my problem? I'm not sure it is appropriate to add those modules with a2enmod.

Stephen: I get it. It just seems there is no place where all these *nix dependent variations are easily found. Mailman docs seems like to logical place. I'd be happy to add those notes if I knew how. Anyway, I still need help. I migrated my mailman2 to mailman3 per the documentation and all seemed to go well. However, now that I have the web UI working, no lists show up. Indeed, using mysql, all the relevant tables in mailman db are empty. How do I figure out if the import really worked when there are no error messages?

I installed mailman-web 0.0.10 and that cleared up half the problem. The django-admin problem still exists. Do I need to create the directory /var/run/mailman3-web or should there be a different path specified somewhere?

I don't know if this is related or not but rather then the list name being in the from header, it is either the list owner or the sender address. Since I'm both I don't know how to tell which from my test emails. I'm downloading the incoming messages with fetchmail so I have to figure out how to see the incoming headers before it gets to mailman but I highly doubt it is coming in that way. Either fetchmail or postfix is doing something funky if it is not mailman.

I think the crux of my problem is the list owner. I need that to be correct in order for postfix to use the right relay host. I tried to use "mailman admins -a" but that did not do what I expected. It did not change the list owner. As an aside the reply-to header is also incorrect but I could find no way to fix that.

Spammers have been registering and not subscribing. I want to turn off the user self registration at https://lists.ccalternatives.org/mailman3/ . I edited /etc/mailman3/settings.py adding ACCOUNT_ALLOW_REGISTRATION = False and restarted the services, but the ' Sign Up' option remains. I assume /etc/mailman3/settings.py is my active settings file. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, Is there a way to have more granular permissions in Postorius than either User or Superuser? The user permissions that are configurable under /admin/auth/user/ do not seem to have any effect. We have a helpdesk team that would benefit from being able to access all list pages in the same way as a Superuser, but without the ability to accidentally delete the mail domain for example. [MM3-users] Getting original message headers

We've been seeing some particularly pernicious spammers recently. They're using gmail accounts; I'd like to report them to Google. To do that I need to find the original message headers. By the time the message gets to the archive, or to the mailing list recipients, all the Received: headers seem to have been deleted, leaving only the ones from my list server outwards. Is there a way to access the original incoming emai, before DMARC mitigation etc., has changed the headers? Peter C

[MM3-users] Missing styling on select pages

Hello all, I installed mailman3 on Rocky Linux 9 via the Virtualenv Installation installation guide. I configured Apache httpd to proxy gunicorn. For the most part, everything is looking good except for some select pages that do not contain the styling like all other pages. When a user sees the "Verify Your Email Address" screen, it's without any of the styling. /accounts/confirm-email/ Same for when a user tries to reset their password. The initial screen looks good (with styling), but after entering the email address and clicking "Reset My Password", the following screen is bare. /accounts/password/reset/done/ I have Mailman 3.3.10, Postorius Version 1.3.13, and HyperKitty version 1.3.12. Any suggestions?

[MM3-users] MM3 gateway errors and frequent reboot needs

We have had to reboot the list server almost every week and wonder if there is something leaking and eating up resources. I does not appear to be memory, though. The server is slow to respond (could be because it's overseas) and then after some time we get intermittent gateway errors and finally we cannot access the lists online because of the gateway errors. It appears to me that the issue is with Postorius, but I could be wrong. Do files get closed after opening? Are we alone having such issues? Please advise. PS: My old MM2 installation could (and did) run without any help. Not so with MM3.

So I see the process for migrating an archive from mailman2 to mailman3 https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/migration.html.................. i.e python manage.py hyperkitty_import -l foo-list(a)example.com $var_prefix/archives/private/foo-list.mbox/foo-list.mbox but does the migration handle attachments?? attachments are in ..../archives/private/foo-list/attachments. I assume this is if you are upgrading in place? I am migrating to a new server and my plan is to follow these steps but copy the config.pck. and .mbox files to the new server and import them, but then it looks like I need to copy the attachment directory? if so how do I import the attachments to mailman3?

[MM3-users] Does hyperkitty show JPEGs in line and what about attachments?

I run several MailMan 2.1 mailing lists and some subscribers are frustrated by the way pipermail deals with JPEGs that are embedded in the messages and also with how attachments are handled. Does hyperkitty in Mailman 3.1 do better on these issues. Assuming this message gets archived, I am going to try embedding a small picture right here: Hopefully that shows up in the archive. I won't add an attachment because the list may not allow it but I'm curious how those are handled. My best guess is that this is the SECRET_KEY in settings.py, and probably there is some data leftover from before that was signed with the key above but SECRET_KEY in settings.py is still "MyVerrySecretKey". Or it could be the other way around. Don't know what to do about it though.

Hi, I'm using mailman 3.3.8. Some messages with attachments from Google users get rejected by spam filters because of invalid DKIM signatures. It seems, that mailman alters some lines in the body. [MM3-users] Question about message bounce stats

When I used Mailgun some time back, it had a feature of, for any specific outgoing mailing, being able to show you stats and other details of which mails were received ok, which bounced, and which were undeliverable, which I found helpful to check every so often. Their system also kept track of long-term trends, eg for addresses that frequently failed. Does Mailman3 keep such stats, and if so is there any way to get access to them, even if only API? I would think it useful to do so (and yes, for individual outgoing messages at least for a period). Well, I discovered some chaos, and indeed this is a Microsoft MAPI added component. Thread-Topic and Thread-Index are Microsoft's crap for their handling of threading, and they add it to *any* origin message going out the door for Microsoft's conversation handling. Which is annoying. I'm going to be exploring some things on my clients' end to see if we can strip those headers *before* they end up at our mailing list system. Painful systems are painful, and Microsoft is one of the worst offenders in this case. And I've informed Microsoft through our deep diving on their end and mine that they're breaking things. FORTUNATELY, I have administrative access on the MS365 side for the clients involved, so I can do some tweaking on mail ingress to strip certain headers. And hopefully that'll work. But, the webpage does not seem right, i.e. the text has loaded but not the images and wondering if anyone has any tips on how to resolve. I've checked ownership/group ownership of the /opt/mailman/web/ directory and sub-directories and all is owned by mailman:mailman which I ?think it should be. In Mailman2, I know that I could do that by modifying the aliases table. I've been poking around in Mailman3, but haven't managed to figure out which container I need to be looking at. I am struggling to find out why I do not see TEMPLATES in the Settings. When I first logged they were there. Many of them. Then, toying with the settings, they disappeared. I cannot find them now. Originally i thought I would not list the mailing list but changed my mind. Likewise, archives are now listed as public. I am still thinking about that. In any case, I want to see if there are templates to allow me to change headers or footers in messages, such as give the address of the list. Thank you for your advice. [MM3-users] MIME Digests with posts and index inline likewise Plain Text Digests

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand, Mailman attaches posts in a MIME Digest mail intead of inline in the digest mail itself, like Plain Text Digests does. Some mail readers like Gmail eventually displays attachments inline anyway, but readers like Outlook do not. Also the digest index seems to be posted as an attachment in MIME Digests. Would it be possible for Mailman to send both posts and index inline in the MIME digest? I am pretty sure it's not a feature yet, but if Mailman would be able to, I will submit an issue in core (I presume). /Henrik Rasmussen

[MM3-users] migrating mm21 to mm3 with different domain

Hi gang, I want to migrate mm21 to mm3, by changing the domain of the list, thus LIST@OLD_dom to LIST@NEW_DOM. I run on debian, with the debian testing version of mm3 installed. Is there an obvious way to do that? Thanks and apologies, Mark. I sent the latest post before I went back and read through the earlier exchange on this topic. Had forgotten what you said 16 months ago. The problem seems to be triggered when I post to the list with the stevebrown address, likely due to a mismatch between the way Mailgun constructs headers and the way Mailman3 processes them. The good news is that I now know what "grepping" is. Am I correct that I cannot do that as a mere list manager and not a Mailman3 platform operator with Linux? Also good to know about VERPing. I'm not enough of an IT guy to know the lingo well. Steve

[MM3-users] How to see the admin password reset in docker with mailman3

I am setting up a new environment of Mailman3 in docker. I understand I have to reset the password to set the password for admin. I go to forget the password, in the GUI and I put in the address I have listed in the docker-compose.yaml and I never get the email. I look at the mail log on the host and I do not see the smtp connections. I assume Django is not using the docker host but sending the mail directly?? Basically, where can I see the password email rest mail logs to make sure an email was sent out and where it is going?

Docker-mailman 0.1.1 I am using Mailman 3.1 in production and I am trying to debug a problem[1] so I tried to setting Mailman to provide more debug info in the smtp.log file[2]. I might have been doing it wrong, but in the mailman-extra.cfg I set [logging.smtp-failure] path: smtp.log and restarted Mailman, which stopped incoming mails until removing the added section. Product: Mailman Core Version: 3.3.10 When I post an "invite" to the REST API: http://localhost:8001/3.1/members Params: list_id = list.domain.tld subscriber = some(a)email.address display_name = Some Name invitation = true Should Mailman Core be attempting to send an "invitation" email to the "subscriber" address, or is this the job of the "client" calling the API? I understand the API does return "token", and "token_owner" on success, which I assume the "token" would be used for a subsequent "verification" process. I'm developing my own "frontend" for "subscribers", "moderators", "list admins", and "system admins" respectively. Sort of working through understanding what Core does and does not do itself.

Hello, after correcting little discrepancies within the mm3 configuration proposals in the debian buster package and the help of Mark I am very pleased with it now. BTW: There is a very helpfull instruction for installing other mail components like dovecot/postfix/etc on https://workaround.org/ispmail/buster/ actually not yet for bullseye, but my experience is: it will come soon. So I dont understand the discussions like: "hands off debian mm3 packages". If your init.d/mailman3 script or systemd unit file doesn't have the --force option, then you can add it. Aside from requiring TLS >= 1.2 for all connections, there's nothing generic. As I mentioned above, if you don't need a socialauth provider, then disable it in settings.py. If you're running an enterprise network with single-sign-on (SSO) such as Shibboleth, it's possible to configure Apache so that only SSO-authenticated connections get to talk to Django. [MM3-users] Authenticating against Hyperkitty's DB

Hi, inspired by the question about LDAP, I want to ask a related question. We're currently thinking about adding a wiki to our small OSS project, and requiring users to have multiple accounts for the same project is nonsense. We don't have LDAP set up yet, but we do have a running Mailman 3 installation, including Hyperkitty. Thus I thought about whether it's possible to just write some glue script that authenticates against the user information in Hyperkitty's database. Creating an account for Hyperkitty would then be sufficient to get access to the wiki. Could someone give me a hint where and in what format Hyperkitty stores the user information into its database?
