Hi! Since we do run roughly 40 mailinglists on mailman3, the schedules/cronjob task python3 /usr/share/mailman3-web/manage.py runjobs minutely uses 1 CPU core 100% all the time. Recently the qcluster program is engaging the CPU continuously at about 5% CPU. While that may not be much, previously it was not doing this. What could be the cause of this? I cant see any warnings in the logs.

[MM3-users] Posting replies vs starting a thread via email

In my tests where replies go to the list, when a person uses the email client? So far a reply to the original message and a reply to a reply to a reply all go in the same thread. Is this standard? Do I have to warn users not to have endless Re re re re? And the other question is what happens if a user sends a message via email with a new subject? Does the list accept it as a new thread? This should be one of my last big questions. Thank you. Paul

I have Replace From: with list list address for no particular reason except I thought that ensures people stay with in the list and not accidentally reply to the individual (it is a discussion list Could you explain why you chose YES for DMARC Mitigate unconditionally. I don't understand the technical language. What is it supposed to do that you find great (if you can, in non technical language). Also, how does that interact with REPLY GOES TO LIST (no munging in my case) in ALTER messages. I want to make sure I have the best settings.

Is it possible to use Amazon SES with Mailman? Despite my best efforts, I have conclusively verified my sending domain, but Amazon SES rejects mails with the 'sender email not verified' message. If you verify a domain, you do not have to verift individual senders. The help from amazon SES mentions it looks at several headers, but I am not sure what is what. Has anybody had success with this? We want to enable max_delivery_threads - we want to send personalized mails (To: ), and we hope that threading would speed things up - but it seems this option has no functionality despite being documented in the schema.cfg. I'm asking because our list mod doesn't have time to check each image in a submission individually, so we currently don't allow images, but the boss wants to allow them.

So I added in my mailman.cfg: " [ARC] privkey: /path/to/private.key " But I don't understand the meaning of "... and located at: " #{config.ARC.selector}._domainkeys.#{config.ARC.domain} –ex.– test._domainkeys.example.com " Where can I find this string or where do I have to place it. Hello, Thank you for your help with the moderation status. My next question - I have two lists from Yahoo to import. I’ve migrated them through groups.io and have a convenient export. I now have all the data in formats I can handle. (json file for members, mbox for archives.) What’s the best way to import hundreds of users, setting their mail delivery status and moderation status at the same time? (There doesn’t seem to be a command line option for adding members anymore where you can also set their delivery status.) I’ve looked at the documentation, but couldn’t figure out what to do. By any chance does this or the other message you posted Brian have to do with my case where after my October message to 500 subscribers, I checked recently and found all my members are gone? I was concerned that after the upgrade (which I am sure is related) that somehow my subscribers were lost because of some bug. Which brings up another question—I don’t see a way to download subscribers in a list, which would be useful in situations like this or when migrating.

I can access the web interface, I've imported lists, etc. I'm now trying to do some simple injection testing via command line. But I seem to be missing something. I've tried using mailman inject with the filename option to one of the lists I've imported but still no luck. Some members cannot get past the email verification when they create their accounts. They insist that they have looked in their spam folders. Their email addresses they entered are correct - the are able to log into their accounts with the right email address. But they get the message saying that a confirmation message was sent and if they don’s see it to contact us. 1. Who is ‘us’? My members are asking... 2. How do I help them? I tried subscribing them to a bogus list with pre-verified email, but that did not work, so both they and I are stuck. Tried finding help in archive, but did not see anything. Given the project has been around for a few decades, many people have used different email addresesses over the years, some of which they no longer have access to. Yes,it makes more sense to concentrate on just one aspect, as you suggest: I'll focus on the delay I see when trying to delete a nonmember via the Postorius web interface. Hi, I am following the guide here: https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/commands/docs/create.h… and am falling at the first hurdle. command = cli('mailman.commands.cli_lists.create') NameError: name 'cli' is not defined. I am running the command in the mailman shell. Doing a help("mailman.commands") works so Python can see that. I thought it might require pyCLI so I installed that but still no joy.

I just have promoted a member to a moderator. Now when he logs in to Postorius, he gets the message "There are currently no mailing lists.". I have set "Show list on index page" to "no" before. But as a moderator, the list should be shown, right? I mean, all lists are shown to the administrator also. When I manually enter the complete URL, the moderator can see the list. I think this is a bug. Moderators should see their lists. What do you thing? Olaf

Hi Ruth, I had a similar issue before and noted how the Docker system does this. In mailman.cfg do something like: [webservice] hostname: mailman-core.Domain.tld port: 8001 Set hostname to something that resolves to the current IP that you want external clients to connect to the REST interface on, potentially manipulate the Hosts file on the local machine if needed. And speaking of reverse DNS, I do have a valid PTR record that maps to the domain of my server. But that domain will never match the sending domain for outgoing mailman mail for two reasons: 1. Mailman keeps the from header intact, so the sending domain can be anything. 2. Even the list domain can be any number of domains since I host more than one domain on the server. So I hope there is not an expectation that the rDNS domain match the email sender domain. If so I'm toast. Is it just sort of a smell test to see if the server looks legitimate? Thanks again!

Hi there, i also deleted the website example.com, while I tried to configure my mailman 3 site. Now I get a Server-error, when I try to open my mailman3 sites: "An error occurred while processing your request" I tried to fix this problem by changing the SITE_ID=2 in my settings_local.py. But nothing helped, also the SITE_ID=0 did change nothing. I made a "/etc/init.d/apache2 restart" to ensure, that the settings are loaded again, but it didnt help. Is there anything I can do, besides reinstalling all django and mailman 3? Mailman Version 3.2.1, Python 2.7.16, Django 1.11.28 Thanks for any hints :-) Wolfgang

I am working through installing mailman3 on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS / apache 2.4.41 / postfix 3.4.13 and have a couple of questions. I've installed Django, cloned the mailman-suite repo, installed and tested apache with Mod_wsgi [ according to https://tecadmin.net/install-apache-with-python-mod-wsgi-on-ubuntu-20-04/ ] and it worked fine. Now I am at 'Setting up a WSGI' server in the MM3 instructions where it says I am to configure uwsgi.ini file. Does that .ini file go in /opt/mailman/mailman where other .ini files reside? In setting up the apache virtual server [ according to https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/postorius/en/latest/deployment.html?highl ight=apache#apache-with-mod-wsgi ] I do not find a postorius.wsgi which WSGIScriptAlias points to. I see where Torge Riedel is running the mailman service under systemd, but I'm having trouble doing that. I don't see a mailman option that doesn't detach as a daemon. Did I miss something? [MM3-users] Handling of (un)subscribe mails for already (un)subscribed users

Hi, I noticed that a mail to -subscribe for an already subscribed user doesn't get any response (about line 225 in mailman/src/mailman/app/subscriptions.py). Same but different for unsubscribe for users not on the list. I'd need these kind of mails however in hope that users complain less. Would that be generally interessting, and if so, any special requirements for submitting patches, or should I just do that locally? Regards, Andi

Hi, I have noticed recently I have around 2000 bogus sign-ups that have created accounts in Django. Looking through the logs these have come from the Postorius sign-up pages. I checked and email confirmation is required before the accounts are created and the email addresses that have been used do seem like they could respond to these requests. I don't want to add captchas to the form right now but is there any way to clean out these users from the database perhaps periodically based on whether the accounts are subscribed to any list? Hi, I have created a footer via the webUI "Templates" option, but it is not included in the mails distributed by the mailinglist. From information given in other threads, I checked the DB, and the entry for this footer is created in the template table. The uri for the footer is http://localhost:8000/postorius/api/templates/list/..., but there is no process listening on port 8000. Here's another question that I have. A regular message just came into my email from one of the lists I'm a member of and it had a 3 line footer. The first two lines are fine, they just include the list's email address and an address to send unsubscribe requests to. The third line is this: %(web_page_url)slistinfo%(cgiext)s/%(_internal_name)s It looks to me like it should be a link to the group's list info page. Is this a bug or is there something I can do to fix it? It looks like it might be missing a forward slash after the first "s".

I can't see a way to do that in the Member Options, so I thought I'd try "remove" and re-add, either from the command line or the UI. Hi everyone, I seem to have got this working following most of the process above and then restarting restart mailman, qcluster and gunicorn - not sure which of these made the difference I was a trying a number of things. I'll now try and repeat the process and narrow down my steps to document exactly how to do this and am then happy to share documentation on it for others (and for review in case the steps are different on other systems). I did see an issue in that if the footer template did not end with a newline, the footer wasn't added, but I didn't see any looping behavior. I started checking all my settings and found the problem in the Django settings.py file. POSTORIUS_TEMPLATE_BASE_URL = 'https://mailman3.caltech.edu' My footer template works now! Thanks again for all your help. I think we're getting close to putting this into production. Just going to have some of our users do some QA and testing with real lists migrated from Mailman2.

Please excuse me, if this has been discussed before and I missed it, but what is the added value of going through the trouble of manually installing mailman3, rather than doing a simple apt install mailman3-full? [MM3-users] OS upgrade - anything to take care of?

Dear MM3 users, today I upgraded one of two servers from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 and - besides some minor config updates - postfix & dovecot worked well afterwards. So I am very optimistic that the upgrade of the second server from 18.04 to 20.04 will also work fine. But the second server is running MM3 (installed in venv) and I saw that on upgrade Python 3.8 is installed. Is there anything I have to take care of? Anything to do / change in venv? Before it was quiet easy and supposedly still is, but we can't figure out what to do with the CSRF-token-problem. Is there anywhere a documentation on this? We can't find one. Hello. I'm new with v3 of mailman. Installed via aptitude on deb10. After I logged in as admin, I created my actual domain, as "example.com" was there by default. I then deleted example.com, and everything broke. The only site I had was still using example.com. How do I either a) restore example.com in config or CLI (as web UI is completely broken now), or b) move my one and only "Site 1" to the domain I created? Thanks.

The cause is a security update to apache2, which was released on the 28th. It's got regression problems. There's been another update today, which doesn't fix it. Thanks, we have no time frame in-mind. The group that wants to do this is technically a sub group in my division, so the higher ups may decide to give them that access or not. At this point I will send up my findings and then the managers can discuss how/if they want to implement a solution. I think ultimately they would just need to add and remove users (once a list is lists for them). So I also assume they could script that with email commands?

This is probably s stupid question but I have been searching for an answer. How do you set a different rest api password? The instructions say : The credentials are set in the [webservice] section of the configuration using the admin_user and admin_pass properties. But what is that referring to? I am running docker, so is this in the docker.yaml file (I tried it there it did not work) or in the Django config file or someplace else?

Thanks, That set me on the path, But having issue with DOCKER For Docker I know you do not edit this file /etc/mailman.cfg. I believe It is generated from "/opt/mailman/core/mailman-extra.cfg" so in the "/opt/mailman/core/mailman-extra.cfg" add a section to set the restapi password and restarted my containers. I added in /opt/mailman/core/mailman-extra.cfg [webservice] admin_pass: restunicorn But now in /etc/mailman.cfg I have two [webservice] sections and things are broke [webservice] hostname: ******** port: 8001 admin_user: restadmin admin_pass: restpass configuration: /etc/gunicorn.cfg . . [webservice] admin_pass: restunicorn Any thought on how to change it?

Another docker upgrade question... according to the upgrade docs https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/upgrade-3.2.html#post-upgrade you are supposed to stop the web service and run a series of commands (compress/collectstatic/etc). Recently I upgraded Mailman to GNU Mailman 3.3.4 (Tom Sawyer) (Postorius: 1.3.5 and HyperKitty: 1.3.4) which is now processing bounces. When a member have been disabled due to bounces, how is the member re-enabled? I would guess it would be under the "Users -> Members -> Member options -> Delivery status", but theses are both (Enabled and disabled) unchecked, not indicating whether or not the member is either or. Your instincts were correct. I adjusted the Gunicorn timeouts for Postorius/ Django instead and that has alleviated the problem. We use supervisord on our containers so I changed the gunicorn command there. command = gunicorn --timeout 0 --graceful-timeout 300 --config /var/www/mailman-www/gunicorn_config.py wsgi I'm also looking to speed up the processing so I'm wondering if adding more Gunicorn "workers" for Postorius would help with that. Hi all, I’m going to do a mailman2->3 migration in a FreeBSD jail. I installed mailman3 in an venv from pypi, along with nginx, uwsgi and exim. The above error happens when I try to open the base url of my server with a browser (is redirected to postorius/lists/) (no errors on admin/ and hyperkitty urls) Same passwords and users in mailman.cfg: [webservice] hostname: localhost port: 8001 use_https: no admin_user: restadmin admin_pass: ??? and in settings.py: MAILMAN_REST_API_URL = 'http://localhost:8001' MAILMAN_REST_API_USER = 'restadmin' MAILMAN_REST_API_PASS = ??? [MM3-users] Speed/progress of update_index_one_list?

Yesterday, I ran "mailman-web update_index_one_list" against a mailing list. The command output "Indexing 328077 emails" and that is the last I've heard from it. The process is still running but, looking in ~mailman/web/logs, I can't see anything happening related to that list. Is there any way to determine how far this process has got, or what it is actually doing? (Without stopping it) For future indexing, what makes the most difference to the speed? Does it benefit from having multiple cores if I resize the AWS instance to a larger processor? What is the bottleneck for this process? Thank you. Regards Philip
