Yes,it makes more sense to concentrate on just one aspect, as you suggest: I'll focus on the delay I see when trying to delete a nonmember via the Postorius web interface. However, I decided to do a clean rebuild of everything first, to make sure I'm on firm ground. It's taking a bit longer than expected. When I'm back up and running, I'll send you the diagnostics you requested. (Prior to shutdown, I was seeing 3.600 rows in the member table.) Thanks a lot, Stephen

[MM3-users] Migrating Mailman 3 lists

Hello Mailman users, I know how to migrate mailman 2 lists to a new mailman 3 server. However I do not know how to migrate a mailman 3 list from one mailman 3 server to another one. Are there any instructions or protocol on how to accomplish this? The Mailman 3 server I want to migrate *from* was setup using Docker. Hi, I am following the guide here: https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/commands/docs/create.h… and am falling at the first hurdle. command = cli('mailman.commands.cli_lists.create') NameError: name 'cli' is not defined. I am running the command in the mailman shell. Doing a help("mailman.commands") works so Python can see that. I thought it might require pyCLI so I installed that but still no joy.

Do you plan to reintroduce the de-duplication feature so that if a mail list subscriber is on multiple email lists that are cc'd/bcc'd they only get the message one time? Are you aware of solutions feature outside of Mailman3 core? Say filtering in postfix-mta? (might complicate tracking of dups in postfix) For "mailman core", could we filter in outbound send of mailman? Example - could the processing pipeline be modified to track/discard duplicate msgs?

[MM3-users] List invisible to moderator

I just have promoted a member to a moderator. Now when he logs in to Postorius, he gets the message "There are currently no mailing lists.". I have set "Show list on index page" to "no" before. But as a moderator, the list should be shown, right? I mean, all lists are shown to the administrator also. When I manually enter the complete URL, the moderator can see the list. I think this is a bug. Moderators should see their lists. What do you thing? Olaf

Hi Ruth, I had a similar issue before and noted how the Docker system does this. In mailman.cfg do something like: [webservice] hostname: mailman-core.Domain.tld port: 8001 Set hostname to something that resolves to the current IP that you want external clients to connect to the REST interface on, potentially manipulate the Hosts file on the local machine if needed. If you set ``` [webservice] hostname: greyarea-post.cam.ivimey.org ``` or maybe just `greyarea-post` would do, and then add to `/etc/hosts` on `greyarea-post` ``` 0.0.0.0 greyarea-post.cam.ivimey.org ``` or whatever name you used for `hostname` this will get gunicorn to bind to the public interface and will include the proper hostname in the `self_link` responses.

And speaking of reverse DNS, I do have a valid PTR record that maps to the domain of my server. But that domain will never match the sending domain for outgoing mailman mail for two reasons: 1. Mailman keeps the from header intact, so the sending domain can be anything. 2. Even the list domain can be any number of domains since I host more than one domain on the server. So I hope there is not an expectation that the rDNS domain match the email sender domain. If so I'm toast. Is it just sort of a smell test to see if the server looks legitimate? Thanks again!

Goodmorning everyone, I'm setting up a mail server to manage a mailinglist. I installed mailman3-full and configured everything. I can create a list, add members to the list, but when I create a new thread, I only get it on the email from the same domain as the list. While all the other members of the list, they do not receive the thread. I tried to check the logs, but I don't see anything significant. What can I check? Thank you in advance Max

Hi there, i also deleted the website example.com, while I tried to configure my mailman 3 site. Now I get a Server-error, when I try to open my mailman3 sites: "An error occurred while processing your request" I tried to fix this problem by changing the SITE_ID=2 in my settings_local.py. But nothing helped, also the SITE_ID=0 did change nothing. I made a "/etc/init.d/apache2 restart" to ensure, that the settings are loaded again, but it didnt help. Is there anything I can do, besides reinstalling all django and mailman 3? Mailman Version 3.2.1, Python 2.7.16, Django 1.11.28 Thanks for any hints :-) Wolfgang

OK, but inside say the mailman-web container, doesn't mailman still have a file descriptor open and pointing to the old (now rotated/renamed) log file? - I don't see how doing the rotation on the Docker host aloneis going to lead to mailman logging to a new log file. I am working through installing mailman3 on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS / apache 2.4.41 / postfix 3.4.13 and have a couple of questions. I've installed Django, cloned the mailman-suite repo, installed and tested apache with Mod_wsgi [ according to https://tecadmin.net/install-apache-with-python-mod-wsgi-on-ubuntu-20-04/ ] and it worked fine. Now I am at 'Setting up a WSGI' server in the MM3 instructions where it says I am to configure uwsgi.ini file. Does that .ini file go in /opt/mailman/mailman where other .ini files reside? In setting up the apache virtual server [ according to https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/postorius/en/latest/deployment.html?highl ight=apache#apache-with-mod-wsgi ] I do not find a postorius.wsgi which WSGIScriptAlias points to. Same but different for unsubscribe for users not on the list. I'd need these kind of mails however in hope that users complain less. Hi, I have noticed recently I have around 2000 bogus sign-ups that have created accounts in Django. Looking through the logs these have come from the Postorius sign-up pages. I checked and email confirmation is required before the accounts are created and the email addresses that have been used do seem like they could respond to these requests. I don't want to add captchas to the form right now but is there any way to clean out these users from the database perhaps periodically based on whether the accounts are subscribed to any list? Here's another question that I have. A regular message just came into my email from one of the lists I'm a member of and it had a 3 line footer. The first two lines are fine, they just include the list's email address and an address to send unsubscribe requests to. The third line is this: %(web_page_url)slistinfo%(cgiext)s/%(_internal_name)s It looks to me like it should be a link to the group's list info page. Is this a bug or is there something I can do to fix it? It looks like it might be missing a forward slash after the first "s".

[MM3-users] OS upgrade - anything to take care of?

Dear MM3 users, today I upgraded one of two servers from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 and - besides some minor config updates - postfix & dovecot worked well afterwards. So I am very optimistic that the upgrade of the second server from 18.04 to 20.04 will also work fine. But the second server is running MM3 (installed in venv) and I saw that on upgrade Python 3.8 is installed. Is there anything I have to take care of? Anything to do / change in venv? Hello. I'm new with v3 of mailman. Installed via aptitude on deb10. After I logged in as admin, I created my actual domain, as "example.com" was there by default. I then deleted example.com, and everything broke. The only site I had was still using example.com. How do I either a) restore example.com in config or CLI (as web UI is completely broken now), or b) move my one and only "Site 1" to the domain I created? Thanks.

The cause is a security update to apache2, which was released on the 28th. It's got regression problems. There's been another update today, which doesn't fix it. Thanks, we have no time frame in-mind. The group that wants to do this is technically a sub group in my division, so the higher ups may decide to give them that access or not. At this point I will send up my findings and then the managers can discuss how/if they want to implement a solution. I think ultimately they would just need to add and remove users (once a list is lists for them). So I also assume they could script that with email commands?

The instructions say : The credentials are set in the [webservice] section of the configuration using the admin_user and admin_pass properties. But what is that referring to? Thanks, That set me on the path, But having issue with DOCKER For Docker I know you do not edit this file /etc/mailman.cfg. I believe It is generated from "/opt/mailman/core/mailman-extra.cfg" so in the "/opt/mailman/core/mailman-extra.cfg" add a section to set the restapi password and restarted my containers. I added in /opt/mailman/core/mailman-extra.cfg [webservice] admin_pass: restunicorn But now in /etc/mailman.cfg I have two [webservice] sections and things are broke [webservice] hostname: ******** port: 8001 admin_user: restadmin admin_pass: restpass configuration: /etc/gunicorn.cfg . . [webservice] admin_pass: restunicorn Any thought on how to change it?

I am new to Mailman 3 and I've been reading all the documentation that I could find, but I haven't been able to figure out how a list owner can use the web interface to customize the footer that appears at the end of each e-mail from the list. We're actually after something much simpler (in theory), which is to eliminate the built-in footer altogether for some of our lists. Could someone share the instructions for doing that? Thanks.

Recently I upgraded Mailman to GNU Mailman 3.3.4 (Tom Sawyer) (Postorius: 1.3.5 and HyperKitty: 1.3.4) which is now processing bounces. When a member have been disabled due to bounces, how is the member re-enabled? I would guess it would be under the "Users -> Members -> Member options -> Delivery status", but theses are both (Enabled and disabled) unchecked, not indicating whether or not the member is either or. How do I or the list admins re-enable a bounce-disabled member? Regards, Henrik

Your instincts were correct. I adjusted the Gunicorn timeouts for Postorius/ Django instead and that has alleviated the problem. We use supervisord on our containers so I changed the gunicorn command there. command = gunicorn --timeout 0 --graceful-timeout 300 --config /var/www/mailman-www/gunicorn_config.py wsgi I'm also looking to speed up the processing so I'm wondering if adding more Gunicorn "workers" for Postorius would help with that. [MM3-users] Speed/progress of update_index_one_list?

Yesterday, I ran "mailman-web update_index_one_list" against a mailing list. The command output "Indexing 328077 emails" and that is the last I've heard from it. The process is still running but, looking in ~mailman/web/logs, I can't see anything happening related to that list. Is there any way to determine how far this process has got, or what it is actually doing? (Without stopping it) For future indexing, what makes the most difference to the speed? Does it benefit from having multiple cores if I resize the AWS instance to a larger processor? What is the bottleneck for this process? Thank you. Regards Philip

Now 2 days later it does no longer show up in the archive. What is going on here? May this have to do with HYPERKITTY_RENDER_INLINE_IMAGE which I have turned on meanwhile. As far as I know there are no naming conflicts in the default installations, Mailman 2 installs into directory trees under directories named "mailman", while Mailman 3 installs under "mailman3".

Mailman3 people -- I created a new list, and used postorius to create a template for " list:user:notice:welcome". I then used the mass subscription feature to add myself to the list, having checked "pre-confirmed", "pre-approved", and "pre-verified". I received a welcome message that appears to be the default welcome message. It certainly wasn't what I put into my template. Any suggestions on how I get mailman to use my template? [MM3-users] User suspended after too much spam

I have set up spamassassin as spamfilter, and it works reasonable so far. Some spam passes the filter and I try to use it for training. However, one of my users has a very restrictive spam filter and rejects all spam. This causes mailman to suspend that user. I have to enable the user each time. How can I change that behaviour? I do not want my users to be suspended. Cheers

We just migrated to mailman 3 and one of my admins asked is there a way to change their digest options, when adding a bunch of users via mas subscription? I was looking for an option to say all new users are set to digest, but I can't find it. Also, is there a way to select multiple users in list and change their digest options? I believe could do this in mailman2 but I am trying to figure out if this is possible for the GUI in mailman3?

Thanks, What cron do you run it out of, root? I assume it does not matter as long as the cron user has docker permissions, so the corn user does not matter cause the -u will run the command as the mailman user in the container.

Thanks, I just did a test and send a message to a list I was not a member of, and the owner of the list got the message about needing to approve it. and the sender go the message that it had to be approved. So it looks like that piece does work in the docker environment? or does "Mailman notify" do anything else?

I solved my own problem and it was a stale master lock. I deleted all files in the locks directory that begin with master.lck as follows: "rm /var/lib/mailman3/locks/master.lck*" See: https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/thread/… So, it didn't have anything to do with the debian package upgrade but simply was a left over master lock that had not been deleted. [MM3-users] mailman 3.x upgrade and downgrade

Hi all, I have a few contradictory questions. 1. How to upgrade the 3.x version? 2. Is it possible to migrate (downgrade) the lists from mailman 3.x to 2.1? 3. If so, what would be the best way to do that? My mailing list server is running on a CenOS-7x with postgreSQL and the following mailman packages: django-mailman3 1.3.5 mailman 3.3.2 mailman-hyperkitty 1.1.0 mailman-web 0.0.3 mailmanclient 3.3.2 postorius 1.3.3 We have ~200 lists with more than a decade of history. thanks -- Carlos Souza

[MM3-users] check/update delivery status via python script

Somehow I can't get the starting point in the documentation to do stuff like this. Besides, when I try to run examples from https://docs.mailman3.org/projects/mailman/en/release-3.0/src/mailman/ commands/docs/withlist.html[1] I run into errors like AttributeError: 'Withlist' object has no attribute 'process' Where to start?
