I ended up removing the old address (from Postorius) and subscribing the new one from there, and strangely, it accepted it. It shouldn't have accepted it if it existed as the CLI insisted.
The CLI is telling you that an Address object corresponding to the string email address exists. That Address can be attached to a User and subscribed to any number of lists.
Postorius is telling you that there is no subscription of that Address to that MailingList, and therefore it's OK to subscribe it. So it did.
