I don't think there's a built in way to disable them, but it would be pretty simple to change the interface so users never see them.
Might be worth a feature request to make that user configurable, if you've got time to file the request?

Hi everyone,
is it possible to disable the facebookish like/dislike thumbs buttons on posts in Hyperkitty? I have the impression that this kind of functionality discourages useful, argumentative discussion and instead causes emotional voting without arguments on whatever is at hand (it is one of the features I would really like to disable on GitHub as well). A voting facility on its own is surely fine, but it shouldn't be on each post, but only where one actually wants to cast a vote.
Also, one isn't informed of the thumbs up/thumbs down count when only using the email interface and not Hyperkitty. This can lead to confusion for users that only use Hyperkitty and feel their "votes" are being ignored.
