There should be a message like Jul 26 17:53:33 2022 (2868) ACCEPT: <165888320457.2073.7552187924254439941(a)msapiro.net> preceded by a GET for the poster and followed (not necessarily immediatly by a message like Jul 26 17:53:34 2022 (2865) HyperKitty archived message <165888320457.2073.7552187924254439941(a)msapiro.net> to https://msapiro.net/archives/list/list@example.com/message/FF35XYJNXTCDX5FW… The last message above may be the GET for the poster, but if the others are missing, it's not surprising as the message wasn't sent. There may be something useful in Django's log. This is the file defined in the LOGGING dictionary in the settings file as ['handlers']['file']['filename']. Normally, nothing is logged there for a web reply, but some error might be logged there. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. I did see another post that suggested that I add to /etc/mailman3/mailman.cfg > > [logging.template] > level: debug > > But that doesn't work for me. For example, after using that `mailman conf` doesn't list and debug values and as far as I can tell, the service, even after restarting, is not logging any more than it was. On the other hand, if I add > > [logging.smtp] > level: debug > > Invoking `mailman conf` will reflect that new loglevel. The settings in the logging.template section set defaults for the other logging.* sections. In particular, the logging.debug section sets `level: info` so setting [logging.template] level: debug will not affect the setting for logging.debug. See mailman/config/schema.cfg which is augmented by mailman/config/mailman.cfg and by your own mailman.cfg. > This started me down the path of trying to figure out the configuration system of mailman in hope that that will save me time down the road. I have read > https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/src/mailman/config/docs/config.html but that doesn't seem to agree with what I'm seeing. > > For an additional example, my mailman.cfg file has a "logging.debian" section, but I don't see that section listed in the `mailman conf` output. Why would that be? Because you have installed the Debian/Ubuntu package and that setting is specific to that package and probably only defined in their local mailman.cfg. The reason you don't see it in `mailman conf`, is it's broken. Without a `-s/--section` argument, it only lists sections defined in schema.cfg. See <https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/issues/736>, <https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/merge_requests/666> and <https://pythonhosted.org/lazr.config/lazr/config/docs/usage.html>. [MM3-users] Re: Displaying addresses in emails from a Mailman 3 installation

by Mark Sapiro

On 7/2/25 17:21, Steve Brown via Mailman-users wrote: > In a list I administer, the From line in an incoming email shows [Poster's Name] via [List Name] <address for posting a reply> . I use Outlook as my client, but at least some other clients behave similarly. However, I have at least one subscriber who uses Mozilla's Thunderbird as his client, and periodically the format changes to something else, most recently to just [List Name <address for posting a reply> . I suspect this occurs from some combination of the way Thunderbird parses the header and the way it populates some kind of address book that makes autofill work, but I'm not sure. Is this a known problem? Is there an easy fix that will be stable? In the past, putting an association in his address book and removing others worked, but it didn't hold and he is frustrated. This From: is the result of DMARC mitigations. The actual From: header in the email is From: [Poster's Name] via [List Name] <address for posting a reply> where [Poster's Name] is the first non-empty value from - the display name in the original From: - tne display name in the posters member record - the poster's email address with the domain replaced with `---` How this header is rendered by any particular mail client (MUA) is up to that MUA and not something you can control. Note however that I use T-bird as my MUA and T-bird displays the From: in your mail from the list as From Steve Brown via Mailman-users <mailman-users(a)mailman3.org> Also, Mailman puts your original From: in a Reply-To: which T-bird displays as Reply-To Steve Brown <drstephenlbrown(a)gmail.com> Depending on your list's settings, the original From: might be in Cc: rather than Reply-To: And, if the T-bird user really needs to see the poster's name and it's not in any displayed headers, they can always view the source of the message and see the From: there. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. I’m missing about 10 days' worth of archives as a result of this. There is a message in your mbox file with a '^From ' separator with non-ascii in the remainder of the line. This may be an unescaped '^From ' in a message body or an actual '^From ' separator. First get your mbox and find the last message successfully imported in the archive before this one. You can delete everything up to through that one. Then you can fix the bad message or just delete it from the remaining mbox and run hyperkitty_import start=... with this mbox. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. They don't confirm their subscription because the don't have a subscription request. They have been added to the list as nonmembers because Mailman ensures there is an address record for all the sender addresses in a post regardless of the disposition of the post. See https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/blob/master/src/mailman/runners/incomi… Mailman 3 has a different model for dealing with nonmembers than does Mailman 2.1. There are still *_these_nonmembers list attributes, but these are intended to only be used for regexps. For individual addresses, it is intended that the address be a nonmember and the disposition of posts for that nonmember be handled by setting its moderation_action. Of course, this results in spam sender addresses becoming nonmembers which may not be desired, but can be useful. For example, on some lists I manage, nonmember posts are held for moderation. In moderating the post, if I determine it's spam, I discard it and in the same operation set the senders moderation action to discard so subsequent posts from that address are automatically discarded. However, if you want to remove nonmembers from a list, there is currently no mailman subcommand to do that. The `mailman delmembers` command only does members, not nonmembers. You can do it with `mailman shell` (withlist) something like ``` $ mailman shell -l list(a)example.com Welcome to the GNU Mailman shell Use commit() to commit changes. Use abort() to discard changes since the last commit. Exit with ctrl+D does an implicit commit() but exit() does not. The variable 'm' is the list(a)example.com mailing list >>> for nonmember in m.nonmembers.members: ... nonmember.unsubscribe() ... >>> commit() ``` -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B.
