On 9/21/22 16:24, Dan Caballero wrote: > Mark, > > I'm seeing this issue pop up this week with several lists. You previously mentioned two conflicting browsers potentially causing the issue. Can you elaborate? That would only cause a transient issue which would not occur on a subsequent get of the held message view. I gather this is not the case here. I.e. once the error occurs on a get of the held message view, it is persistent. > In addition, is there a way for me to run this cleanup using mailman shell -r "somescript" so that I can check all the lists instead of one by one? For a -r script, try ``` # In non-interactive scripts, we need the explicit imports. from mailman.interfaces.listmanager import IListManager from mailman.interfaces.requests import IListRequests, RequestType from zope.component import getUtility def somescript(): for mlist in getUtility(IListManager): requestdb = IListRequests(mlist) for req in requestdb.held_requests: if req.request_type == RequestType.held_message: if not requestdb.get_request(req.id): print(f'List: {mlist.list_id}, Bad request id: {req.id}, deleting') requestdb.delete_request(req.id) ``` The real question here is what are these spurious requests and how are they occurring. If you do a query like ``` SELECT * FROM _request; ``` Are there entries with empty `data_hash` or entries with an `id` that is not the value of any `pended_id` in the `pendedkeyvalue` table. BTW, I understand why you thought an import was needed in the interactive script in my message at https://lists.mailman3.org/archives/list/mailman-users@mailman3.org/message… - the `from mailman.interfaces.` line was a mistake on my part and shouldn't have been there. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. What happens behind the scenes when a member is added to a list? The user's display name is set when the user record is initially created. Assuming someone who is initially unknown, this can happen when the unknown user signs up for a web account, when the unknown user subscribes to a list via the web UI or when the unknown user is mass subscribed to a list. > Manually subscribing members has different results with our configuration. > > I've seen the manually entered name show up as "None" <foobar(a)caltech.edu>. "Foo Bar" <foobar(a)caltech.edu> is subscribed but the member list only shows <foobar(a)caltech.edu> The display name has nothing to do with message acceptance. That is based only on the address. In Postorius >=1.3.6 there is a `Users` selection at the top of most pages if you are logged in as a superuser. This allows management of users including their display name. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Dylan

My one thought was also, that maybe i need to try rebuild_indexes. Rebuilding indexes will affect only searches. It should have no effect on just opening a list. We have some large imported archives at https://mail.python.org/archives/ e.g. https://mail.python.org/archives/list/mailman-users@python.org/ with over 85,000 messages, and don't see these issues. It definitely looks like your server doesn't have enough memory. You may find https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/5.1/ref/contrib/sites/to be helpful. Documentation of the Postorius UI is sorely lacking. The good news (hopefully) is the UI itself is fairly straight forward and self-documenting, but there is really no separate documentation for list owners or site admins. There is a user's manual for list members at https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/userguide.html but nothing similar for list admins. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. (actually I don't get this point exactly but > wouldn't bother, if the above works). The templates are actually included in the mailman.po files so that they can be translated all in one place on weblate. However they are not retrieved from there. There are templates for some but not all supported languages in the mailman/templates/ directory in the installation and these are used by default, but these are not up to date in all cases with those in the mailman.po files. That should be fixed as well. In my case, for the servers I maintain, I update from the heads of the gitlab branches whenever there are significant changes and part of that process compiles the .mo files and updates the templates with scripts at https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/blob/master/generate_mo.sh and https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/blob/master/update_lang_templates.py -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. The others are waiting to be sent. I don't know why they are continually being dequeued and requeued I suggest you stop Mailman core and then examine these files with `mailman qfile` to see if there is some issue with one or more of them, but this seems unlikely. More likely is some issue with the `out` runner itself, but I have no idea what that would be except that issues like this can be caused by files in Mailman's var/templates/ directory that aren't readable by the Mailman user (often caused by running `mailman import21` as root). > I am getting ~50 lines/second appended to /var/log/mailman3/web/mailman-web.log > > [pid: 1348330|app: 0|req: 4366/4366] ::1 () {54 vars in 1065 bytes} [Thu Nov 28 17:02:18 2024] GET /mailman3/hyperkitty/api/mailman/urls?mlist=chat%40bray.phcomp.co.uk&msgid=Z0iJAoTHHrzK2ypO%40phcomp.co.uk => generated 126 bytes in 3 msecs (HTTP/1.1 200) 7 headers in 220 bytes (1 switches on core 1) This looks like some kind of DOS attack. The core still supports the same plain text and MIME format digests and the same individual subscriber and per-list default formats as did Mailman 2. The issue is none of these things are exposed in Postorius. If you subscribe to digests on this list, you will receive the 'encapsulated' MIME format because the lists mime_is_default_digest setting is True, but currently that has to be set through the bin/mailman shell tool. > Is this intentional? Is it a bug - feature that was lost in translation from 2 to 3? Is there a delivery option I'm missing that will turn that back on? It is the intent that Postorius will eventually expose all these settings. We're not there yet. At present you could possibly do this by interacting with mailmanclient, although I'm not certain the settings are exposed there. You can do it via bin/mailman shell if you have access and know what you're doing (see <http://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/release-3.0/src/mailman/runners/docs/diges…>) If you file an issue at <https://gitlab.com/mailman/postorius/issues/new>, it might help expedite this. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B.
