People can subscribe, etc. It's all working great. Just no archives. I'm using PostgreSQL for the database, Postfix for mail and Apache2 for the web server. The first place to look is Mailman's mailman.log. Are there errors there with tracebacks? Are there messages there like <timestamp> 2018 (9606) HyperKitty archived message <message-ID> to <archive_URL> Also is there an Archived-At: header in received posts? If either or both of those, what happens if you go to the URLs? -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Dylan

[MM3-users] Re: Various patches for mm3 stable 3.3.1

by Mark Sapiro

On 9/30/20 6:57 AM, Ruth Ivimey-Cook wrote: > Folks, > > For my own purposes I have created some patches which apply to the > current mailman pip package. I'm only responding here to the issue of how to suggest patches. If you hope that they could be incorporated into the distribution, posting them to this list is not very effective. It is too easy for list posts to get lost, buried or forgotten. The best thing to do is to create an issue or issues at <https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/issues> (each issue should address only one thing). Then you can either attach the suggested patch to the issue or better, create a merge request with the patch to fix the issue. Ideally, the merge request would also contain relevant additions to unit tests. The first advantage is open issues do not get lost. They are always there in the tracker. The second is that all of the above is work that needs to be done in order to actually get the patch into the master branch, and the more of it you do, the less of it needs to be done by someone else who may not be as motivated as you are. Granted, this may seem like a burden for you. After all, you fixed your problem so why bother, but open source works best if we all contribute what we can to improve the product. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. There is no specific cli option. A site admin can address this by creating a custom template at Mailman's var/templates/lists/LIST_ID/LC/list:user:notice:welcome.txt where LIST_ID is the desired lists ID and LC is the preferred language. The list owner can create a custom list:user:notice:welcome template via Postorius. > > I couldn't find it in WUI. Do you mean GUI? The footer can't contain characters not in the character set of the list's preferred_language. For English (en) this is us-ascii. For German (de) it is iso-8859-1. These are artifacts from Mailman 2.1 You can change this for English by putting [language.en] charset: utf-8 in your mailman.cfg. This works because us-ascii is a proper subset of utf-8. For other languages, a change like this might require recoding of templates and/or a message catalog, but since we don't currently ship any non-English templates or message catalogs, that is moot at the moment. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Start with an unmodified configure and run `./configure --help` to see the options. It appears you may be running configure with '--prefix=/home/mailman' and that directory doesn't exist. I would suggest abandoning the Debian packages and installing as documented at <https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/virtualenv.html>. You should be able to keep all your existing configuration files and the database. You could even keep `list` as the Mailman user if desired. Once you have done this, upgrading via pip from PyPI or even from GitLab is very simple. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. That URL is from a Mailman 2.1 installation. Are you still running Mailman 2.1? If so, you need to support Mailman 2.1's CGIs. In Apache, this would be something like ScriptAlias /mailman/ /parh/to/mailman/cgi-bin/ but nginx doesn't do that. You would need something like location /mailman/ { proxy_pass <something that can serve Mailman 2.1's CGIs.> } The something could be apache or ?? -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. If you are looking at a MIME format digest, this is expected depending on your mail program. You might prefer Plain Text Digests. If you are looking at individual messages, you probably have in your list's Settings -> DMARC Mitigations, DMARC mitigation action = "Wrap the message in an outer message From: the list" and DMARC Mitigate unconditionally = Yes. If you set DMARC mitigation action = "Replace From: with list address", the From: will be replaced, but the message won't be an attachment, and if you set DMARC Mitigate unconditionally = No, the selected action will be applied only to messages whose From: domain publishes a DMARC policy of reject or quarantine. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. What is the default language > of the list? (This is available in Postorius.) Have you changed the > default encoding for English on your site? (I think you need to look > in mailman.cfg for this.) What is the default language of the site? I note that the message also declares Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" and Python's email package will base64 encode utf-8 message bodies. I also note that the messages Subject: is RFC 2047 encoded as utf-8. These tell me that the user's preferred_language if set or the list's preferred_language is not English or the charset for English is changed to utf-8. I tried to duplicate this in a test installation with the charset for English set to utf-8, but I get a similar response but with Subject: =?utf-8?q?The_results_of_your_email_commands?= and Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. As far as `dump_json` is not an available module goes, the docs reference a lot of helper functions that are described at <https://mailman.readthedocs.io/en/latest/build/lib/mailman/docs/documentati…>. These need to be imported. I.e., for dump_json ``` from mailman.testing.documentation import dump_json ``` But, if you are just trying to set an alias_domain for the domain and you have Postorius, you can do that via Postorius. If not Postorius you can use `mailman shell`, For example ``` $ mailman shell Welcome to the GNU Mailman shell >>> dm = getUtility(IDomainManager) >>> d = dm.get('example.com') >>> d.alias_domain = 'x.example.com' >>> ``` Then you need to do `mailman aliases` to create/update the maps. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B.
