[MM3-users] Re: Rejection based on total message size including attachments

We have moderators who just can't get it through their heads to limit the size of attachments. One list today distributed a 6 mb pdf to over 700 recipients. I have found information on creating a custom handler and some old and brief logic on limiting max_message_size from Mr. Sapiro. > > Would anyone who has developed a custom handler to reject messages based on total size, mind sharing the full file? If so, could you also state where the handler was positioned in the chain of handlers. Is this a Mailman 3 question or a Mailman 2.1 question? If Mailman 3, the architecture is quite different. This would be done with a rule, not a handler, but based on details in your question, I think you are asking about Mailman 2.1. In that case, the appropriate list is really mailman-users(a)python.org <https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users>, but since you're here, the basic info on custom handlers for MM 2.1 is at <https://wiki.list.org/x/4030615>. There is an example called MyHandler.py linked from that page. It won't do what you want but can be used as a starting point. Also, look at Mailman/Handlers/Hold.py, in particular the code following the "# Is the message too big?" for how to determine the message size. That handler will compare the size to the list's max_message_size and hold the post if it's too big. You probably want to compare the size to a fixed value or a size defined in mm_cfg.py and either reject or discard the message. If you put your handler between Moderate and Hold, it's probably safe to reject the message because it is from a member or an address in accept_these_nonmembers. Rejecting post from arbitrary non-members is a bad idea because of spam backscatter. If you need more help, please join mailman-users(a)python.org and post to that list. In any case, this could be generally useful enough that I will probably add it to the stuff at <https://www.msapiro.net/scripts/>. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. You cannot add a non-member with a regexp email, but the legacy *_these_nonmembers list attributes still exist in Mailman core and accept regexps. These settings are exposed in Postorius 1.3.3+ under Settings -> Message Acceptance. With older Postorius, you ned to set these directly in core, e.g. with `mailman shell` as in $ bin/mailman shell -l list.example.com Welcome to the GNU Mailman shell Use commit() to commit changes. Use abort() to discard changes since the last commit. Exit with ctrl+D does an implicit commit() but exit() does not. The variable 'm' is the list.example.com mailing list >>> m.accept_these_nonmembers [] >>> m.accept_these_nonmembers = ['^.*[.(a)]good\.domain$'] >>> m.accept_these_nonmembers ['^.*[.(a)]good\\.domain$'] >>> -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. For example, piping this input ``` Non-digest (regular) members: user1(a)example.com (User One) user2(a)example.com Digest members: user3(a)example.com (Three, User) user4(a)example.com ``` through this script ``` #! /usr/bin/env python import sys from email.utils import parseaddr flag = '' for line in sys.stdin.readlines(): if line.startswith('Non-digest'): flag = 'Reg' continue if line.startswith('Digest'): flag = 'Dig' continue name, addr = parseaddr(line) print('"{}",{},{}'.format(name, addr, flag)) ``` produces this output ``` "User One",user1(a)example.com,Reg "",user2(a)example.com,Reg "Three, User",user3(a)example.com,Dig "",user4(a)example.com,Dig ``` -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Therefore, I suspect that my apache configuration file for mailman3 may be at the source of my problems and specifically the alias for the static directory. Here is my apache configuration file: It's not the alias for static > Alias /mailman3/favicon.ico /var/lib/mailman3/web/static/postorius/img/favicon.ico > Alias /mailman3/static /var/lib/mailman3/web/static > > <Directory "/var/lib/mailman3/web/static"> > Require all granted > </Directory> > > <IfModule mod_proxy_uwsgi.c> > ProxyPass /mailman3/favicon.ico ! > ProxyPass /mailman3/static ! > # ProxyPass /mailman3 unix:/run/mailman3-web/uwsgi.sock|uwsgi://localhost > </IfModule> It's the fact that ProxyPass /mailman3 unix:/run/mailman3-web/uwsgi.sock|uwsgi://localhost is commented out. This should not be commented assuming you are using uWSGI and it is listening on the socket /run/mailman3-web/uwsgi.sock -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Before I try to find out how to install and configure the software, I need to know if, how and what is required for us to set up this software to deal with more than one email list. There's lots of documentation. Start here <http://docs.list.org/en/latest/>. > I am working with a plan to setup a CentOS VPS on which Mailman will be hosted. The objective is to host and administrate mailing list for the 3 entities that I am directly involved with. These lists must function completely unrelated to each other including the email addresses from which the emails & news letters are sent from. If this is possible can I be given information or a link to how it can be done and what is required? A single Mailman installation can support multiple lists, each with different membership, owners and moderators. For example, see <https://mail.python.org/mailman3/>. The lists can all be in the same domain or in different domains if the server supports multiple domains. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. I have found > this parameter when searching the net, but I'm not sure if it is supported. I think it should be, but the actual connection is via the the sqlalchemy create_engine() function. It appears this should be passed to the pymysql Connection() function per <https://docs.sqlalchemy.org/en/rel_1_2/core/engines.html#custom-dbapi-args> What happens if in a Python 3 session, you do from pymysql import connect conn = connect('127.0.0.1', user='mailman', password='mailmanpass', database='mailman3', charset='utf8', use_unicode=1, unix_socket='/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock') As I understand it, that's what sqlalchemy should be doing with your database url. In my testing, the above works with or without the unix_socket= argument, so I suspect something else is wrong in your case. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. Something like locate views/list.py should find it. Then you need to download <https://gitlab.com/mailman/postorius/-/merge_requests/500.diff> and edit it to remove the first 15 lines so the first remaining line is the diff --git a/src/postorius/views/list.py b/src/postorius/views/list.py line. Then make a backup copy of postorius/views/list.py and run the command patch postorius/views/list.py path/to/500.diff where postorius/views/list.py is actually the full path to postorius/views/list.py and 500.diff is the edited file you downloaded. Then restart uWSGI. If anything goes wrong, restore your backup copy of postorius/views/list.py and restart uWSGI. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B.
