So the django was spitting out absolutely horrible traceback errors to diagnose the issue. I modified the code to print the query and then raise exception (what is expected from an error, not only "I just failed, sorry do whatever"). Then I got the query and tried manually. And it failed. It only does occur because you have set Digest size threshold to 0 under the assumption that 0 means unlimited which it doesn't. If you don't want digests sent on size, you need to set Digest size threshold to a very large number. I've created https://gitlab.com/mailman/mailman/-/issues/1158 to avoid throwing the exception, but setting the threshold to 0 is still wrong as it will cause a digest to be sent on every post. Sorry I was too fast deleting the original mail, so replying here instead. I used the Debian packages as my original mailman configuration but migrated then to mailman based on git. Still using the configuration settings from the debian packages (e.g. content of mailman3-web.cfg). So yes, the debian packages worked fine for me with just the defaults. (However, I would strongly recommend to use postgres and not sqlite as the database, as sqlite is unfit for production, and migration is not really easily possible, but that's not related to Debian.) Fwd: Problems after Upgrade

Update on this. I fixed the problem logging in to the web interface by changing several instances of smart_text to smart_str. I also notice that I errored in my message below by saying the replaced text was “search_text”. It was actually “smart_text”. I believe my "site-packages/compressor” library was not updated correctly because I had to make many manual changes to get things to work. I still have the problem "mailman-web compress” listed below. I haven't had a chance to benchmark my solution yet, but I am hoping it will reduce the latency quite significantly. I'll report on the linked issue [2] after deploying [1] on m.p.o. how much it helped.
