Trying to configure a list (hosted)
Is there a how to on how to configure a list?
For example, using a hosted option, I see this menu: Subscription requests Held messages Users Templates Settings Mass operations Banned addresses Header filters
And cling on settings, for example. I have already removed my list from the list of lists on the server since I want my website users to only see my list. They can either do that here https://list.tokyoprogressive.org/postorius/lists/discuss.list.tokyoprogress... or here https://list.tokyoprogressive.org/accounts/signup/ I actually do not WANT people to join without being able to use the web interface because it is intended to be a discussion list. So the option to subscribe without creating an account. is confusing to me, which is why I prefer the latter.
BUT...using a test of signing up myself (using 3 other email addresses I have), some using the subscription option and some using the bottom one (no account), all the email addresses end up in my members list and non end up in my non members list.
(So I am wondering what a non member is. I had thought it was someone who signed up without registering (just name, no password), but if so i wonder why all 3 of my addresses end up in the members place.
Lastly, I want to configure it as a discussion list. However, I do not see that option, which was clear in MAILMAN 2.
(And I understand that if someone registers without making an account, I cannot set them myself to have an account enabling them to see the archives and post from the web? If it IS possible, that would be great, because the purpose of the archives in my case is to enable better discussions than if one has only to refer to their past emails.)
That is about it for now, but I am stuck on this right now and a user manual for non techie people, if it exists, would be nice. I see one for list members but not administrators. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place?
Thanks
paul
I guess my message wasn't clear?
Let me try again.
I have not made any list settings or sent mails because I do not want my archive filled with a lot of test mails.
I am simply trying to understand
a) why there are supposed to be two ways to sign up--one where you just get the messages by email and one where you are able to interact with the archives and send from the web interface.
Example, as seen here---> https://list.tokyoprogressive.org/postorius/lists/discuss.list.tokyoprogress...
- I was told that Subscription / Unsubscription lets you truly register
and that just below that
- "You can also subscribe without creating an account" lLets you just receive emails but not interact with the archives.post from the web.
CONFUSION
--> Aside from the confusing use of "subscribe/subscription for both, when I tried testing both options, BOTH sets of emails ended up in my members list.
If there is a guide (I was told it is not ready), it would help, but anyway:
Can anyone help me understand the problem above?
Will it go away if I enter my settings? Will my users (this who truly register with a password) be able to get the archives and post from the interface?
The next post is about the other issue:
And this post is the other part of my question:
I actually only want users who register email, username and password.
It is a discussion list.
I was told to make it private.
Therefore, to ONLY show this form:
https://list.tokyoprogressive.org/accounts/signup/
Hopefully those are my major questions.
I do not want to make trial and error posts and therefor have an unprofessional archive, so hopefully someone can answer these two, hopefully, clear questions.
Thank you!

As I said in the previous response, you can't disable sign ups through the email commands or without signing up.
Although, you can set subscription policy in the list's settings to Confirm where all users would have to confirm their subscription using an email sent to them. Optionally, you can also enable moderation where each subscription needs explicit approval too.
Hopefully those are my major questions.

Web UI is only of the ways you can configure subscriptions to the MailingList. A user can purely interact through email to subscribe to a MailingList, a possible 3rd way to sign up a MailingList.
This is by design for the flexibility of choosing the interface users are comfortable with.
- I was told that Subscription / Unsubscription lets you truly register
Login and Sign-Up to the Web UI only lets you manage your subscription through the Web UI, Post through the Web UI.
You can interact with Mailman purely through email commands too, without having to ever look at the Web UI.
Send an email to <listname>-requests@<domain> with subject "help".
and that just below that
- "You can also subscribe without creating an account" lLets you just receive emails but not interact with the archives.post from the web.

This isn't configurable right now, so you can't disable email commands or subscribing without signing up.

Thank you for the very quick response, Abhilash Raj. Being non technical (and therefore opting for hosted Mailman 3), I can partly understand your kind response.
I can understand that I cannot disable the different ways to sign up.
I am still struggling to understand the difference between the two web choices as shown here.
WAY # 1 TO GET AN ACCOUNT https://list.tokyoprogressive.org/accounts/signup/?next=%2Fpostorius%2Flists...
VS
WAY # 2 YOU CAN GET AN ACCOUNT WITHOUT SIGNING UP at the bottom of https://list.tokyoprogressive.org/postorius/lists/discuss.list.tokyoprogress...
(I was under the impression making only WAY #1 allows one to post, but are you saying that the bottom option also allows one to post, but only by email?)
If I am confused, I know my users will also be confused. I think I understand I can qualify their subscription in the ways you suggest: "Confirm where all users would have to confirm their subscription using an email sent to them. Optionally, you can also enable moderation where each subscription needs explicit approval too."
So to put it simply:
I want to make it a discussion list. Not available to people who are not signed up?
This is dependent on all having access to the archives so they can see what they are responding to
What settings do I make to insure that all who sign up via WAY #1 can see the archives and post.
What settings do I make to insure that all who sign up via way #2 can do the same?
Last, in my account settings what is the difference between a member and a non member?
Thanks and sorry I was not clear the first time.
If this is still not clear maybe I need to first set the settings on my discussion list.
So can someone provide a link to what settings to use? Maybe I should make a new thread and come back here if I still have trouble with the member signups.

That's right. Mailman is a mailing list manager and is primarily based around discussions using Emails. You can subscribe to mailing lists and send email to the list address, which then gets distributed to all the members. All the emails sent to the mailing lists are also archived usually in an archiver.
The official archiver, a.k.a the one supported by us, also additionally supports posting to the mailing list via the Web interface. If anyone wants to use the web ui to post, they need to have an account and need to verify that they own the email address they are signing up with.
Then, anything they post is sent as an email, on their behalf, to the mailing list and that's how you can get 2 ways to post.
You don't need any account on the web interface if all you want is to post through email.
If I am confused, I know my users will also be confused. I think I understand I can qualify their subscription in the ways you suggest:

It is slightly confusing, but let's separate sign-up into two terms and let me know if that is still confusing, "sign up to web interface", "subscribe to mailing list".
sign up to web interface: This is optional. This allows you, as an administrator to operate the mailing list and it's configuration. A user can sign up to the web interface and manage all the subscriptions they have, and also subscribe to mailing lists.
subscribe to mailing list: This is a user participating in a Mailing List. For this, they don't necessarily need to sign up via web interface as there are other ways to subscribe to a mailing list, like anonymous subscribe (which is your #2 above). Once they are subscribed, they are called "subscribers".
Users will always have to "subscribe" before they can participate on a mailing list.
There is currently no way to mandate "sign up on the web interface" for all "subscribers".
- This is dependent on all having access to the archives so they can see what they are responding to
If the archives are set to be private, only the "subscribers" can view the archives.
- What settings do I make to insure that all who sign up via WAY #1 can see the archives and post.
You have to set the archives to be private and that's all.
You can do that from:
List -> Settings -> Archiving
Options on that page should be self-explanatory
- What settings do I make to insure that all who sign up via way #2 can do the same?
They will receive emails and will be able to reply to them.
If they want to post via the web interface, they will have to create an account and sign up, same as #1.
Last, in my account settings what is the difference between a member and a non member?
"non-members" are people Mailman remembers who interacted with a MailingList in past. For example, I can ask an list owner to let my post through, without actually subscribing(because I don't want to get all the emails, just send a single email) by allowing me to be a "non-member" who is allowed to post.
Thanks and sorry I was not clear the first time.

To Abilash Raj
Thank you for tour very clear comments.
I appreciate them.....

Great. The absence of a manual means a lot of guessing, which means I have to make a lot if test posts, but you have saved me a lit oftine. Thank you.

Thanks. This should definitely be in the manual and instructions to users.
So then, when I add my current subscribers from Dadamail, they will be anonymous unless they choose to sign up for the web interface?
If the archives are set to be private, only the "subscribers" can view the archives.
I think I have changed my thinking. Allowing everyone to view the archives will drive more people to my website and allow them to decide whether to sign up for the list and possibly subscribe to the interface.
Last, in my account settings what is the difference between a member and a non member?

Ok, got it. Now a person I import from my old dada mail list—-They are sign up for the list but do not yet have a sub to the web interface. That makes them anonymous I think, right? If so, once I add them I will not see them as members, right?
If so, doesn’t that mean they will not be exportable should I one day decide to move again? If so, I should keep that list.
Thanks a lot.
