[Mailman-Users] Listservers currently hosted with EMWD - urgent request for assistance
Note: Reply-To set to mailman-users@mailman3.org. Please check that any replies are addressed to that list, and not mailman-users@python.org.
Jonathan,
FWIW, I haven't heard anything. I have 3 students submitting MS/PhD theses in less than (checks watch) 18 hours, but after that I'll see if I can find out anything. I wouldn't bet on it, though, as I don't think anyone here has a connection to the Carpenter family or whoever is left of the EMWD staff. I assume you have checked the emwd.com website?
We have our listservers hosted with EMWD which stopped working on 23 December.
What does "stopped working" mean? I assume that list traffic is no longer being forwarded to subscribers, but perhaps other services are working. It may help if you can answer the following questions.
- Are you using the GNU Mailman-supplied Postorius/HyperKitty combination for administration and archiving, or EMWD's proprietary "Harmony" (Affinity/Empathy) platform?
- Can you see archives (if any)?
- Can you log in to the administrative interface?
- Is mail to the lists being returned to sender, or just disappearing into the void?
- You mention an automated response in a later message. Is that to an email you sent, or from a web-based issue-tracking system? What does it say about the current status of EMWD services, if anything?
Regards, Steve
We have since found out the devastating news that Brian Carpenter passed away last year. Brian was really helpful when we moved our listservers from a legacy system to hosting on the EMWD platform. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
As we can no longer get a response from EMWD about our listserver issue I was wondering if any one else in this community could help.
Many thanks.
Jonathan

Hi, Jonathan,
I hope that your silence means either things started working, or you found a satisfactory alternative host. FWIW I did some checking.

OK, I did that myself, and can find nothing that looks like there's anybody home. There is no status notice for Mailman, the blog seems to have been removed as the link works but returns no content, the Facebook account requires login which seems strange for a business, and the Twitter account is still there but unused since 2016.
I'm guessing that the business is limping along since most of the website seems to still be working, although without a client account I can't really test it. That seems strange if they're out of business since I would assume it costs quite a bit to run. I imagine the blog and Facebook account have been made inaccessible for family privacy reasons.
Not sure what the next steps would be.
Steve
Hi Jonathan,
For what it's worth, I am a mailman user who monitors this list. I don't know anything about hosting mailman but I act as administrator for several small lists. Our lists are hosted by EMWD and they seem to be working properly. The last message I received from EMWD was from Barbara Carpenter. On 11/5/2021 she sent a message announcing new owners' names. I am able to log in to the client portal and it appears that you can still submit support tickets through that site. I hope you have resolved your issues and that EMWD is going to continue being a reliable host.
