Are there alternative search engines to Xapian that can be used for Mailman 3?
I have come to understand that Xapian development stalled in the v2.0 attempt.

It is really, really, really fast. I would consider it anyway.
And yeah, I have it running on my MM3 install.

I believe you can use Solr and Elasticsearch as well as Whoosh/Xapian:

There is a bug in hyperkitty that prevents the use of ElasticSearch (and presumably Solr as well):

Where did you come to that understanding? Seems 1.4 is still being actively updated:

The 1.4 branch seems actively maintained. The latest release is 1.4.15, released on 2020-02-24.
The installation that supports this list and also the installation that supports the MM 3 lists at mail.python.org as well as my own production server all currently use Xapian.
They all started with Whoosh, but indexing was very slow.
We then went to elasticsearch which is faster, but required some patching and requires a separate elasticsearch daemon.
We are now using Xapian which is the fastest of the three and works well.
