Does it only support sending emails to a configured news server or does it support NNTP access to itself by user client software?
The gateway is bidirectional. Mail to news is handled by Mailman daemons as part of the mail processing standard pipeline. News to mail is handled by a separate process provided by the mailman command and managed by cron. Each list can be configured for each direction separately.
This is correct for MM 2.1 and MM 3 < 3.3.5. Since 3.3.5, Mailman 3 runs the separate gatenews process via a periodic task within its own processes and no longer relies on cron.
Mailman does not have an NNTP client for accessing messages within Mailman.
