I would say the fact that you are still seeing example.com also means you haven't strictly followed the installation instructions. That domain, example.com, while not such a major issue, means you've not edited your settings.py. Besides that, you should have tested your Postfix configuration (or your MTA) to ensure that it is capable of sending emails to the outside world. In fact, a functional MTA is a prerequisite for MM3. So at this juncture, check your MTAs logfile.
