Follow ups were off list. I suggested:

sudo chgrp -R www-data /opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/prototype sudo chmod -R g+rwxs /opt/mailman/mm/var/archives/prototype

assuming www-data is your web server's group. If not, replace it with whatever the web server's group is.
