Dear Tambet Paide,
We understand what is happening. We do not know why it is happening because (1) with proper configuration of Mailman and the MTA this should not happen and (2) you are the only site reporting this problem.
First, your expectation is *incorrect* for the purposes for which Mailman is intended (discussion and announcement lists). The DSN should *not* go to the original sender. It is not the original sender's "fault" that a deleted mailbox is subscribed to the list, nor can they do anything about that, except to stop sending mail to the list. Only the list owner (or site administrator) can unsubscribe or set no-mail on that mailbox. Therefore the DSN is forwarded to the list owner's address.
I can imagine applications of bulk mailing software where you might want non-list-owner senders informed about delivery failures, but we do not support them with Mailman, and this particular feature will not change because it's the right thing for *all* existing Mailman users (except possibly you). If you want to use Mailman and have an application where the DSN *should* go to the original sender, we will be happy to discuss it and treat it as a request for enhancement, to provide it as an option. But I can't imagine a situation where the DSN should go *only* to the original sender where that sender can't be the list owner. All the situations I can think of can be handled with the existing software and an auxiliary list for "senders with need to know about DSNs".
If your list is in fact a traditional discussion or announcement list, then the fact that a Delivery Status Notification (DSN) appears to be delivered through the mailing list to subscribers indicates that there is a problem with your Mailman configuration or your MTA configuration. Without precise and accurate information about your configurations we *cannot* help you.
I suspect that your list owner is set to the mailing list posting address. If you do that, delivery of DSNs to all subscribers is exactly the effect that you *should* get, because the list owner is the agency that is expected to deal with problems with the list, and therefore *must* get these notifications.
Regards,
